Informace o obsahu

Whistleblower will let you play as Waylon Park, a software engineer under contract with Murkoff and the man who emailed journalists around the world - including Miles - at the beginning of Outlast. Spending a couple of weeks at Mount Massive, during which he was unable to even talk to his wife and son thanks to strict security protocols, Waylon developed a deep-seated distrust of the profit-motivated scientists and doctors leading dangerous and irresponsible experiments on their patients. Identifying with those poor souls fueled Waylon's anger, and set the stage for his unmasking of Mount Massive's rotten core.

Although Whistleblower tells the story that led to Outlast, it will actually stretch past the events of the first game to show the final chapter in Mount Massive Asylum's story.

Have you ever wondered who'd sent the message to Miles Upshur in Outlast? Who made him approach the facility so that he would fall victim to the many horrors its inhabitants have already faced? There is no wonder why the DLC was titled Whistleblower.

So, you play this guy from the inside who needs to escape just like Miles needed to. While I use past tense it should be noted that his story was first - Whistleblower is meant to be a prequel. Also, the story of our new protagonist is a bit more interesting (after all, he is not an investigative journalist), but revealing anything further would be a spoiler so I'll refrain from doing that.

Whistleblower is long. As an expansion / DLC pack, that is. 3-5 hours is what you get and the content seems excellent. The concept is the same here: you have chase sequences, sequences that give you jump scares, crazy inmates who desire to grab and consume you and of course extreme violence and gore.

The sequences where you needed to turn 3 levers or press 3 buttons are now over. There are no repetitive tasks as the developers have eliminated these. However, the various stages sometimes seem a bit more "labyrinthine"; there is no clear indication as to where you need to go and sometimes it is easy to get lost. But the solution is right there - you just need to jump up somewhere you never thought would be possible.

Overall, Whistleblower is a great addition - an example of what a good expansion / DLC pack should be. I highly recommend it to all of those in favour of Outlast.

Hot on the heels of Zombie studios horror game dud Daylight is a bit of DLC to Red Barrels decidedly more enjoyable Outlast. With the bitter taste of repetitive, procedurally generated corridors and piss poor story telling fresh on iron nerved gamers minds, hopes remain high that Whistleblower can cleanse their taste buds and chill their blood. Acting as a prequel of sorts, it certainly has the opportunity to fill in some of the core game's mysteries but the real trick is being able to deliver the tension and fights.

Strait away you see your character, Waylon Park, quickly typing up an email in a dark server room exposing the Murkoff Corporation's misdeeds. It isn't long thereafter that you are lead to the Morphogenic Engine to aid in further experiments. Being introduced to some of the morally bankrupt members of Murkoff and witnessing their twisted experiments first hand goes a long way toward further investing players in the mission to expose and takedown the corporate behemoth. After the intro, however, the narrative takes a back seat with items of intrigue coming in the form of documents and notes taken by Waylon himself, chronicling the events as they unfold as diary entries directed to his wife. The plot returns in the final few minutes, with a conclusion that might appease critics of the parent game's conclusion by fleshing out the aftermath of the events seen in the original game.

While Outlast wasn't without it's fair share of blood and viscera, Whistleblower contains enough gore to make Umberto Lenzi blush. It seems like the folks at Red Barrels binge watched Martyrs, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the Guinea Pig films. Consequently, the game relies less on some of the slower tension building sequences and jump scares in the core game and attempts to shock and unease players with graphic content before pitting them against some memorable psychos. While at times this technique works beautifully, it's repetition cheapens the experience. The guttural start up noise of a circular saw as it escalates to a high pitched shriek generates tremendous anxiety about proceeding to the next area but that anxiety gives way to familiarity as the forbodding howl of powertools seems to be less of a warning and more of a welcome to the next stage of the game. Much of the game suffers from sequences that have players trying to obtain a key or close a valve while being pursued. It gets old and Whistleblower would have greatly benefited from a new twist on the gameplay formula that the core experience established since simply running and hiding from enemies is, from a mechanical perspective, limited. Waylon still carries a camera and still has to hunt for batteries—nothing has changed.

Fortunately, Whistleblower doesn't retread too much of the ground covered in the main game but on the whole, the art direction isn't quite as inspired. There are a number of repeating elements such as plastic lined walls and numerous halls with pealing paint and debris capped off metal gates. Even still, the atmosphere remains heavy and immersive, keeping players invested and some really horrific scenes in the latter portion of the game will burrow under your skin and a few outdoor areas break up some of the monotonous interior design. The structure of Whistleblower is a bit more labyrinthine giving the player the impression that it's less linear than the main experience.

Outlast: Whistleblower is a satisfying slice of of the hide and seek gameplay that fans love. It's sparse narrative fleshes out the main tale, making the entire outlast experience more satisfying in addition to introducing some horrific and memorable new characters. Going forward, Red Barrels will have to expand on the gameplay of future Outlast titles because the endless hunt for switches and keys while being chased delivers diminishing returns when it comes to tension and thrills. If you have the stomach to endure to revolting imagery and events of Whislteblower than it's likely that you will find satisfaction among the corpses, crumbling plaster and peeling paint of Mount Massive.

Finally got the Whistleblower DLC for Outlast and it's awesome! Some people either say it's more of the same or its more gory or both but I say it's about the same on both accounts and equally just as amazing in my opinion. I would give it two gory thumbs way up...if they hadn't been cut off that is =D

Definitely recommended, if you know what you're getting yourself into! Where the original game had a lot of (mandatory) "hide & seek", this DLC was more about a) exploring the amazingly immersive and creepy environments, b) running into REALLY INSANE PSYCHOPATHS (way more insane the original), and c) and running like hell.

There were a couple frustrating parts where I had to "die" a few times to learn the layout of an area (in one case resorting to YouTube for a less-than-obvious passage), and a couple awkward spawns right next to the psychos, but overall I felt the experience was quite polished and cohesive.

I thought the length was reasonable: about 2 and a half hours, a little bit longer than a movie. In fact I thought to myself a few times that the whole experience felt like a movie, in a good way. Yes it's quite linear and there are many scripted events/cutscenes, but everything is tied together so seamlessly, and the immersion level is so high, that it didn't bother me at all.

As noted by others, if you are easily (or even not-so-easily!) disturbed then this game probably isn't for you. It pushes the envelope beyond anything I've ever seen, and I consider myself relatively desensitized to video game horror/gore!

P.S. this is the only game to ever make me look away from the screen, while protectively clutching my manhood... I'll leave it at that ;)

Simply put: if you like Outlast, you'll like the Whistleblower DLC. The gameplay is virtually identical (which is a good thing) and it fills in more of the story that takes place before and after the main game. I found the enemies in Whistleblower to be a little more sinister and dangerous (if you can believe it). Simultaneously fun and terrifying.

Again, same gameplay as Outlast (including the camera). It's just an extension of the story.

I stumbled upon an inmate who was masterbating to a pile of dead bodies.... Easily the creepiest and disturbing environment, ever. Great tie in to the actual game (it is both a prequel and a mid-quel; as time goes on, the DLC occurs at the same time as the actual game).

10/10 would not want to visit any mental asylums, ever.

Rating: 4.5/5

Pros:
- Extends the Outlast experience
- Equally creepy and sadistic, keeping in style with its original
- Even more gory if that was even possible

Cons
- Short at two and a half hours.

Verdict: Outlast: Whistleblower DLC is an incredible addition to the game. I was worried that after being worn out playing Outlast that Whistleblower would be flat and lose its fear factor, I was wrong.

This DLC is unquestionably a masterpiece. So much better than the main game. The main game was more of a thrill ride to the point of me laughing while being chased. This was actually scary. Perhaps because it was more immersive.. I don't know.

When the credits rolled I started a slow clap which turned into a vigorous one. One of the very few campaigns I wish were longer. It was simply a spectacular experience.

Well done Red Barrels. Well done.

Pretty much the only thing I dislike about Whistleblower is that it's somewhat short. Took me around 3-4 hours to complete. I wasn't rushing either. But because it's a DLC it's somewhat acceptable.

9/10 (would be 10/10 if it was 2-3 hours longer)

I thought this wasn't going to be as scary as the first, but I was wrong! The DLC is pretty sweet! If you like Outlast, then you will love the Whistleblower! And by love, I mean you will feel more terrified of the crazies you end up meeting and you might highly likely be disgusted from the disturbing (or should I say vulgar) things you'll see. D:<
