Learn more about Early Access.

What the developers say:

“Vertiginous Golf is currently in the alpha stage of development. This means that the game is still being made and will be improved upon on a regular basis. Updates will add new features and content, as well as optimisation, bug fixes and polish. Please give us feedback and report bugs, and we will continue to improve the game for you!

Why Early Access?
We're planning a very open and community-driven development through the full Early Access process until the full launch later in 2014. Players who buy into the Early Access can expect to have input into development decisions as well as frequent updates with new content and features along the way.

Development Time?
We don’t have a definite development-time for Early Access right now, we hope to have all features completed by September 2014 and launch the full feature version in October 2014. However this all depending on the Early Access development process and time, things can always take a bit more time than expected.

Price?
In development for PC with Mac and Linux versions planned, Vertiginous Golf will launch on Steam Early Access at March 7th 2014 for $15. The final launch price for the game will be $20 so Early Access backers will effectively get a 25% discount.

What about the Community?
When thinking about Steam Early Access and our basic roadmap for the project, we decided that we wanted to give the community the biggest input possible into the development of the game. That's why we’ve built an extensive Community hub - it's a place that we can share our development progress, ask for your opinions, and work with you to create a game that everyone can enjoy.

When the game arrives on Steam Early Access March 7th, we will be opening up our development process to everyone. We'll be holding regular votes on this site asking which features you want developed first, along with a chance to suggest your own features and even have a hand in crafting the universe of Vertiginous Golf.

So thank you for joining us on this amazing quest to deliver the best dystopian steampunk golf game ever made. We truly appreciate your support and now we're looking forward to involving each and every one of you in the future of the game!”

Mini Putt Update Now Live! 9 New Holes To Check Out

April 17th, 2014

Now that PAX East is over and done, it's time to deliver you guys another update for the game.

V0.42, now dubbed The Mini Putt Update, adds 9 brand new holes to explore. Several community members expressed an interest in shorter, more traditional mini golf holes without the use of the Influenza Bug, the chipper or the rewind power. So that's what we've delivered here!

We've added a new leaderboard for the course, and we've gone ahead and reset the other boards completely. This is something we will be doing with every major update, as we often make tweaks to the gameplay or the courses themselves.

These courses are a lot of fun, but they are certainly a simplified version of our core vision. So we want to stress that these courses will not be included in our target 45 holes for the major release. These are just some extra fun bits we've added in because our awesome community wanted them.

A few other minor changes have been made, including the pesky hummingbird bug that would send our little friend outside obstacles, especially in the greenhouse. We've also added that the shoulder buttons must be held down when using the right stick to power your shot on a gamepad to avoid accidental flicks.

Changelog is below, and if you restart Steam you should receive the update immediately. See you on the leaderboards!

  • Added "Mini Putt 1" - a new 9 hole mini-putt type course with simple holes and new game mode with no chipper, rewind or after-touch
  • Added Steam leaderboard for Mini Putt 1 course
  • Shoulder buttons must now be held down to power-up and shoot with right thumb stick
  • Added a Restart Course option to in-game menu
  • Changed white transition screens to black
  • Updated hummingbird mode so it starts in exact camera position to prevent view going outside obstacles
  • Increased collsion detection level to help prevent collision failure at high speeds
  • Minor updates to various main course holes

Oculus Rift demo build now available - Read to download!

April 14th, 2014

Those who follow the blog will know that while Christian has been off enjoying the craziness of PAX East, Paul was at home tinkering with a Oculus Rift prototype of Vertiginous Golf. We debuted that version at PAX East, and after a few tweaks by Paul during the show, it's your turn to check it out at home.

WARNING: THIS IS AN EXTREMELY EARLY PROTOTYPE OF OCULUS RIFT INTEGRATION. What does that mean exactly? You should expect crashes. You should expect the visuals to be a little wonky as we haven't had time to polish them up. You should expect things to go wrong, sometimes with hilarious results. You should also prepare a bucket for the first time you look over the edge to an endless fall through the sky, I was nearly sick!

In all seriousness, this is an extremely early iteration of what we hope the Oculus Rift will bring. We will appreciate feedback, but please keep in mind this is no way representative of the final version. Part of our open development policy is showing you guys these early builds so you can see the process.

If you have a Rift and you want to check it out, you can dowload the EXE from here. This will install a new version of the game that includes the single hole we are using for this demo.

If you don't have a Rift at home, here's a flyover of the driving range level.

Christian will be back later this week to give you all an update from his time at PAX East, but to keep you in suspense until then, here's a photo of him with a Sasquatch.

Finally, here are the build notes:

Oculus Rift – Prototype 0.1

For use with Oculus Rift Dev Kit 1
  • Street and shop with non-interactive TV screens... just sit down when you’re done exploring and want to play.
  • Single “Driving Range” course... hit 3 shots from the tee and get as near to the hole, preferably in it, to score points.
  • Collect golden eggs en-route to improve your score and top-up your boost power.
  • Use the Influenza bug to guide your shot (right stick)... but watch out - there’s no rewind!
  • Fly the hummingbird like never before (Y button)
  • No mouse control – you must use a controller to rotate and move.
  • Use the X button to re-orientate your view if you go wonky!
  • On Game Over... Start/Return plays again. Back/Backspace returns to the shop.

There are also various Oculus related options you can setup for optimum viewing on your system:
f1 – turns vSync on and off.
f2 – Anti-aliasing... between 2 and 8
f3 – Prediction time... between 0.2 and 0.4.
f4 – Toggle shadows on or off.
f5 – Lock the Y rotation on the left stick when aiming and following the ball.

About the Game

Vertiginous Golf is a physics based first person exploratory mini golf game set in a steampunk alternative universe. You travel from a Victorian world of eternal rain to a sun-drenched realm high above the clouds known as the Vertiginousphere, where a game of equally challenging and relaxing mini-golf awaits you. Vertiginous Golf elevates mini golf to a more mature level than the typical casual and child-orientated mini golf games currently available.

The players navigation tools include a putter, chipping wedge, a set of cameras placed at strategic positions on the holes and a fully controllable first person mechanical humming bird that is used to help plan the player's route through the holes.

As an aid to aiming there is a rewind mechanism enabling the player to instantly undo or rewind a shot they're not happy with without losing a stroke. This comes at the cost of a losing a proportion of their "rewind power" based on the distance the ball has travelled, so the longer the player takes to decide to rewind the more "rewind power" they will use up. This power is recharged slowly when the player uses the putter, but not when using the pitching wedge, to encourage more use of the putter.

Another feature of the game is a long glowing trail the ball leaves behind, part aiming tool and part shot evaluation tool that helps navigation while leaving semi-permanent visual feedback as to the player's performance.

The holes are designed with a plethora of moving obstacles including: travelators, pipes, mini helicopters, platforms, spinners, blockers and bouncers along with a variety of contraptions that help and hinder the players progress through the holes.

You could say Vertiginous Golf is the golfing equivalent of Dark Souls, there’s no hand holding going on here and all you’re told is you have to get the ball into the hole at the end of the course. How you do this is completely up to you, do you try and smash it across the whole field, hoping to get some lucky rebounds? Maybe you’re a bit more conservative and like to go for the paths which are enclosed? Maybe you want that “hole-in-one” every time and you have to pitch perfectly in order to get it. Also did I mention this game is as hard as 7 week old bacon?

Vertiginous Golf is overflowing with options, which is something you wouldn’t normally see from a game which is tied to a sport. Just on originality alone I think this is a good pick-up. It already has great features while in Early Access and promised future developments look even better. I’d only steer away from this if you have ADD and you need fast hot action all over your face in order to feel satisfied, now go clean yourself up.

I've not has so much fun playing a crazy golf game since buying 3D Ultra™ Minigolf Adventures well over 4 years ago. Vertiginous Golf, is not only beautiflul to look at , it's deviously more difficult to score compared to the older mini golf game. With local coop available now; and, as development progresses with up to 4 player multiplayer this is going to be a great game to play with your online mates. I can imagine the laugh your all going to have playing this.

The game is in early access; if you were lucky enought to buy it via the humble store a few days ago, you'd have got it for half price, right up to its release.

The game is a physics based first person exploratory mini golf game set in a steampunk universe. There are loads of innovations included such as first person mechanical humming bird that can be utilized to plan your shots, there' s a rewind facility that allows you to undo or rewind a shot without losing a stroke (basically a cheat system). The ball can also be controlled using the WASD keys, so rewinding part way, you can then adjust your shot accordingly. There's a whole host of other things included such as moving obstacles, mini helicopters, blockers, platforms, spinners, travelators and other interesting items (eg a glowing semi transparent trail showing you your previous shots) that help or hinder your progress. At the moment there are 18 holes with a further 27 + holes planned in future updates.

As an early access game you can report bugs in the games forums HERE.

You can see videos of game play HERE, HERE and HERE.

Highly recommended even at it's full price of £11.99 ($14.99). That's over £3 cheaper if you can find a friend in the US to gift it too you. ;)

Vertiginous Golf is an awesome little miniputt-like game. The concept behind the game is compelling and the courses are challenging. Definitely gives off a lot of steampunk-esque vibes and I personally love that. In it's current state it's a barebone uniqe miniputt game but it does have a lot of potential to be something new and unique.

If you prefer watching gameplay over reading I have a spotlight for this game on my Youtube channel.

This game is very promising and well worth the money, even at the stage it is in now.

The holes are very imaginative and fun to play. I've played through each course a couple times now and I'm still having a lot of fun. I will say that the hole layouts are a bit confusing. These aren't par 3-4 holes! The complexity is slightly annoying at first but adds to the replay value. It's been fun for me to realize "secrets" to getting the best path through a hole.

The shot strength is another mechanic that you just have to get used to. After my couple hours of play I am now pretty certain of how far my shots will go.

There is plenty of help in this game, easing the difficulty level down. There is a flashback feature to redo shots. There is also an aftertouch to sway the ball after hitting it. There will apparently later be a hardcore mode with those disabled if you find it too easy.

The atmosphere and genre of the game is great. The music is calming and the atmosphere serene.

I'm very excited for the future course editor and new courses. The developers seem very active in the forums and seem to greatly value the community. I have faith that this game will get expanded in the ways that they say it will and it is pretty fun now to hold me over!
