I'm a big baseball fan. I've been playing baseball video games since the early 80s Atari versions. I am also a big stats follower. One of my favorite games ever was Micro League Baseball on the Commodore 64. My friends and I would sit around and play season after season of it in the winter. All that said, I've been hard pressed to get into any baseball simulators recently. I've tried the other ones that are out there and they just collected dust.
Then the other day I was browsing around the Steam store and saw this. I saw the glowing reviews it's been getting. I figured for $20, why not try it. I am so happy I did.
This game is so deep and detailed. I started off just managing games. Then my #5 starter got hurt and I had to pull off a trade to get someone decent. And so I was sucked in. Now I find myself researching prospects, dumping salary, watching the waiver wire, and trying to land the very best coaches for my organization. I have been gradually taking over more and more of the management of the organization, but this game is so detailed I doubt I will ever do it all.
I only have a few hours invested so far, but I am very pleased. I like to play every game, and the gameplay is a lot like Micro League Baseball was, but without the animation in the game itself. Hopefully in the future they can add animated games, where you see the runners run the bases, the balls actually caught, etc. But where it might fall short in the animation dept., it more than makes up for it in the depth and management, which is what it was built for anyway.
There are some minor quirks, like not being able to pinch hit after the CPU makes a pitching change. But overall this is a phenomenal sim. Hats off to the devs. I'll be keeping a watchful eye on the reviews for OOTP 16, due out soon.
