Out now for Linux!

Hi everyone!

We've finally released the Linux version of Detective Grimoire here on Steam! We had some delays with distribution licences, but we're all good to go now.

Those of you who already bought a copy of the game will find the Linux version available for download in your Steam libraries!

I should mention here too that this game runs with Adobe AIR, but we managed to get a licence to distribute it as a standalone runtime, that doesn't install, it just sits there in the games directory, and can be completely removed just by deleting that directory. That should mitigate any security concerns, since the Linux AIR is so old now! It should also run pretty well on a lot more distros than the usual AIR install!

Cheers,
Tom-

A short, but fun adventure game.

The story is fairly interesting and the dialogues are fun to read, especially some of Grimoire’s snarky lines. And very good voice acting definitely adds to enjoyment!

Gameplay isn’t one bit challenging, but finding pieces of evidence, questioning suspects and piecing together what has happened is still fun if you are looking for a more relaxing gameplay. Puzzles could use more complexity, though, even for a casual game.

If you are looking for a short casual game to pass a few hours with, Detective Grimoire has my full recommendation!

A very enjoyable point-and-click adventure in which you play the role of a detective investigating a murder case. The story is exciting and it simply keeps you captivated throughout the 2-3h of gameplay.

All the characters are well designed, interesting and full of surprises. Some of the dialogues are funny and witty, adding an extra flavor to this already nice game.

The few puzzles that you need to solve in order to progress through the story are rather basic (each can be solved in less than 1 minute), but the cute cartoonish graphics and the decent voice acting easily compensate for this.

This is a fun point and click detective adventure. It is aimed at a younger audience but is fun for adults as well. The characters are cute and the storyline is engaging. The achievements are not too challenging and I was able to beat the game with 100% completion in 3 hours or so. This would also be a great game for those who speak English as a second language since it uses fairly basic English to tell the story and in its puzzles. Highly recommended!

Terrific voice acting, clever and funny dialogue, artwork blends perfectly with amazing soundtrack, giving it true cartoon movie feeling (also duration). Puzzles are very logical and feel just right. One of the best point & click adventures I've ever played.

Art direction is alright - Technology leaves just a tiny bit to be desired, but the excellent voice acting wraps everything up nicely. The interface is effective for a point and cick adventure. In this one you do not have a third person character but have a POV style adventure. The game revolves around cross referencing what people say about themselves and their settings and finding out a question to a mystery which you are investigating. Location and characters are fun and creative, and the setting is family friendly. No bugs or performance issues. So if this suits your tastes I would say this is a nice pick for casual adult gamers, initation to adventure style, people with children, and people who want to investigate things. Good sense of humor as icing on the cake

This captivatingly written "basically just a flash game" detective adventure is well worth one play-through, which depending on your completionism obsession should take between an hour and half and an hour more. There's no reason to replay it.

Jolly, but don't pay anywhere near full price.

Quite a delightful adventure game about storybook detective and his quest to solve a murder perpetrated by a cartoon monster of all things. A must try for anyone who likes a game with a distinct personality and vibe.

It's a quick point and click game, that fo rthe first time i've seen, actually use some logic. However, the game is so short that by the time you manage to get the hang of the system, the game is over, still, it was good while it lasted, though the begining and ending animations did not load for me, so i had to load them from youtube, but other than that, a good mystery game

A delightful casual adventure game, very similar to Phoenix Wright. The game features good writing, funny characters, excellent voice acting and gorgeous background art, making it a very polished murder mystery.

Don't expect much challenge from this one, though : the puzzles solve themselves.

it feels like someone was making a phoenix wright game but then only finished making the first case, but it's cheap enough that i didn't really mind because it was good anyways (also you can get it in the humble weekly bundle for $1 at the time of this writing)

Detective Grimoire is a beautiful, fun -even funny sometimes- and well made game. It has some interesting mechanisms (like combining clues to form sentences) and a non-annoying background music. Each character is unique, memorable, likable and exploring the swamp is enjoyable.

Unfortunately the puzzles are way too easy. Seriously, if you like puzzle/adventure games you'll probably think someone is playing a joke on you. It gave me the impression it was made for elementary students. That's not a bad thing though, especially if you're aware of it beforehand.
Despite initially hoping it would have some interesting puzzles, and subsequently being very disappointed because it didn't, I still had a good time. I'll even consider trying the sequel that's been hinted at.

On the plus side, if you care about this sort of stuff, it's a very easy game to 100%, and drops 5 trading cards.

Story: This was one of the most enjoyable adventure story's i've ever experinced. I love the voice acting with people such as Edward Tiong, Arin Hanson, joshua tomar and all the characters they've played were awesome. The plot was also believable and a lot of evidence made sense along with the suspects. 10/10

Graphics: The graphic cartoony design instilled into this was pretty good, and the characters all feel well instilled into this world. Plus I LOVE THE ANIMATION CUTSCENES, this was perfect 10/10

Gameplay: The controls and inventory system are very simplistic, heck you just need your trusty mouse to play the whole game! You have two ways of going at it in this game, looking at things and walking around, also you have fun little mini-games and can of course talk to suspects and show them evidence and interrogate them. I would warn people though that this game is very easy to beat so don't expect it to be long. 9.5/10

Overall: This was one of the best adventure games I've ever played, it's got great voice acting, good cartoony graphic's and a good length (seriously I thought I could beat this in an hour but it took me 4) so if you can please buy this game, it's totally worth it. 10/10

Recommended price to buy: FULL PRICE!

Detective Grimoire is a fun detective game. The art and music are wonderful. The characters are interesting and amusing; the voice acting adds a lot of personality as well. The gameplay is simple point-and-click, with easy puzzles.

There's nothing bad to be said about this game. The game is short, unfortunately, though another way of looking at it is that the setting and characters are so intriguing, it leaves you wanting more. They hint at a sequel in the end ("To be continued"), and I would love to see that happen!

P.S. For achievement hunters like me, it's a fairly easy game to get 100%. :P

One part Phoenix Wright, one part Professor Layton, all parts awesome.

While Detective Grimoire might not have the deepest story, the largest game world, or the most difficult puzzles ever to appear in a point-and-click adventure game, it does have some of the funniest dialogue I've heard in a long, long time. Combined with a unique graphical style and good music, the game deserves a rousing two-thumbs-up.

I will note, though, that the actual gameplay components are very simple and even the most complex brainteaser in the game will prove very little of a threat to anyone with a fully functional brain. Like many games in the adventure subgenre, it occasionally employs its' own unique sense of logic that might require you to "think outside the box", proverbially speaking. Just a hint; the answer is always much simpler than you're making it out to be.

Short and sweet. Detective Grimoire is neither long (full playthrough with 100% achievements in about 3 hours) nor particularly difficult (some "puzzles" simply involve uncovering clues by moving objects from on top of them), but in that time it manages to be fun, endearing, and innovative. In that, it somewhat resembles an animated storybook with some opportunities for interaction.

This is just fine, as it turns out, because the story is a good one. Dialogues with your suspects are witty and upbeat, with excellent voice acting (which is fortunate, since the game rewards you for exhausting all dialogue options with all characters relating to all clues). Character animations are simple, cartoonish and expressive, and match well with the voices laid on top. The game won't challenge you greatly, but it will entertain. And with a hint at a sequel, there may be more to come with Detective Grimoire.

Short version: 85%
An incredibly short crime adventure game with casual difficulty, excellent narrative, and top-notch voice-acting. It may be closer of being a Flash cartoon, but it’s a really excellent one at that.

Long version:
Detective Grimoire is the sequel of a 2007 freeware Flash game under the same name (but different content), made originally for tablets (the game even asks you to “tap” with the mouse all the time).
Strictly speaking it falls under the point ‘n’ click adventure genre, but in reality it’s more of an interactive adventure cartoon with a roughly two hour run time as it offers no actual difficulty.

But it’s all inconsequential, since Detective Grimoire is a wonderful all-age murder mystery with a good plot, memorable characters, entertaining dialogues and excellent voice actors. Although the swamp setting and environmentalist messages can get a little overbearing sometimes.
As a detective story it has next to no replay value: once you wrap up the crime, this was it. Still, it’s priced similarly as a movie ticket, and it sure is a lot more entertaining than most movies you may watch.

This game is one of the most fun and friendly point and click adventure games I've ever played.
I highly recommend it!

The good:
+ Nice graphics style with cartoon mimicry
+ Ok music
+ Very clear and nice voice acting
+ Fun and easy puzzles (suitable for children)

The bad:
- Very short. I completed it in 2 hours, my girlfriend in about 2.5 hours.
- User interface could have been a bit better, but no major problems.
- High pitched squealing ambient sound effects got on my nerve.
- I experienced 2 crashes (crash to desktop), but luckily it auto-saves.

Overall I would give this game an 8/10.
I would recommend buying this game for around €5,- or less because of the duration.
If they would have episodic content I would easily go for a season pass.

Simple, short, but with some good ideas. A couple of the tools they give you, like the "suspicious/not suspicious" notes are completely useless and just there for reference. I wish there was some gameplay effect to them, but there isn't.

Still, the way the actual detective-ing is put together and presented is quite fun, and the story, while fairly easy and predictable with some very serious sequel baiting at the end (it does have a real ending to it's story, at least), is well done and has a few interesting twists to it. The voice acting is also generally quite good, and there's a fair number of little things to find in the game.

Overall, definitely worth playing, especially if you really love mystery/adventure games.

It's quite a fun game, even if it is extremely easy. The dialog is really snarky and pretty funny, and the characters themselves are pretty great caricatures of their various professions (like the overly pompous movie director or the really nerdy student).

Excited for the next one!

Despite the fact this is a very short game, I am happy I got it and would recomend it to anyone who is looking for some not too challenging fun.
I am not sure whether the game was designed for kids, it could be as the puzzles are not challenging at all and as the game can be completed even if you don´t get around to getting all clues (my case). Still, the plot is nice, I really enjoyed the graphs and sound effects, the game has some dark and ironic sense of humor that most adults will enjoy. I foun dthe voice acting extremely good.
You can add some challenge by turning off the shining hints, an dyou can walk around the game areas in any order you want, which gives you a sense of freedom. The fact that after the game you can still go back to look for the stuff you missed in order to get 100% of suspects/clues/notes was a plus for me, as it gave me the excuse to go back and enjoy Detective Grimoire ´s world without having to go through all the game again.
My main complaint is that the game was too short, but with the simple "case" involved it would have been harder to extend the playing time without making it boring. If the developers´ idea was to leave you wanting for more, they succeeded with me, as I will be definitely checking out for other Detective Grimoire games. I got this one in a bundle so I´m not sure what is its regular price keeping in mind it is so short, but in the worst case scenario other DG games will be on my wish list should other bundles or sales include them.
