About This Game

How long has it been? A man sits in a distant getaway cabin waiting for his wife Serena. Where is she? Things in the cabin evoke memories, and the husband comes to a disturbing realization...

This short point-and-click adventure is the result of a massive collaborative effort between dozens of fans and designers of adventure games. Rallying to support the venerable genre and its passionate community, these developers have brought together a grim and highly detailed horror story in what is the largest, possibly even the first, game project of its kind. Talents include crew from renowned indie companies Senscape, CBE Software, Infamous Quests, Digital Media Workshop, Guys from Andromeda, and many more.

Features

  • A (twisted) love letter to the adventure game community
  • Over 40 contributors provided their wit and talents
  • Extremely depressive mood, and a bit of fear here and there
  • A haunting story that will challenge your intellect (and temerity)
  • Amazing voice acting by legendary adventure game designer Josh Mandel
  • More awesome acting by popular video producer Pushing Up Roses
  • Yet another overwhelmingly astonishing surprise cameo by an ex-designer from Sierra!
  • Did we mention the gut-wrenching atmosphere?

Serena is a short 3D point and click adventure, although it is wrongly classified as "horror". There's nothing particularly "gut wrenching" about the atmosphere of the game, as stated in the description on the store page, but other than a few mischaracterizations, the title is solid for a freebie.

You are an unnamed man who is trying desperately to figure out where your wife Serena disappeared to. You start out sitting at the kitchen table in your small, cozy cabin in the woods, with a picture of you and your beloved in front of you; her face is blurred, and you struggle to recollect your memories of her. The remainder of the game is spent piecing together memories in an attempt to remember what events have transpired; the ending has a brilliant and unexpected surprise twist that is sure to give you at least a small tingle down your spine.

The monotone color scheme of the graphics really help to set the depressive mood of Serena. There are a few objects to interact with, and clicking on them multiple times will grant an array of randomized lines regarding said object. The entire game is one long puzzle, lasting about half an hour at best, that can be quite cryptic. You must click certain objects in a specific order to advance the game, and there are no indications as to where to go or what to examine. The voice acting is decent, though not astonishing, and the same can be said for the gentle soundtrack.

With "over 40 contributors", one would expect more from Serena. The premise of the game is doable by one or two people alone, and you spend the entire game inside the cabin with no cutscenes or extra effects. Due to the tags on the store page, I was personally expecting a more horror inspired game, but taking the game for what it is... it's alright. Since it's free, there's no harm in checking in out for yourself, just go in with appropriate expectations and you will enjoy the title far more.

Rating: 3.0/5.0 - Average, can take it or leave it.

Considering the fact that it is free, and that it is an effort to keep the always-struggling adventure genre alive, you should really give it a chance. Now...let's see...

The colorless graphics are perfect for telling this kind of story. They look almost sepia and I feel they really reinforce the atmosphere in the game. The sounds are just the bare necessities like creaking floorboards, ticking clocks and of course: the voice acting (which is well done). All of them serve their purpose well.

And then... the story itself... what can I say? It is short, dark and powerful. Part of it resonated with me, and at times I was shocked at how much the protagonist thought like I, and probably like we all, sometimes do.

This game isn't asking you to solve puzzles, it's not trying to blow you away with state-of-the art graphics or sounds, nor is it trying to entice you by offering endless online multiplayer, it is not even very long. "But, what is left then?" you may ask. Well, for me that's the feeling I'm left with after playing it. I will be taking a lesson away from this. I won't tell you which one. Play the game. Maybe you'll know. Maybe you'll find your own lesson. Whatever... I can only say there is something there. Something I don't see very often in video games.

Simple, short point and click adventure with good writing and voice acting. Worth the hour it takes to play it.

I loved the game. Overall this game is beautiful, and I have no complaints about really anything. The voice acting is believable and the visuals are great. The main issue I'm seeing in the negative reveiws is that this is definitely a different kind of game, playing more like a detective sort of thing. You interact with objects and learn the story behind everything. I found it really intriguing, but if you don't like listening then you'll be completely lost and probably bored. The story progresses only after you find certain objects and delve deeper into the mind of your character, who is remembering everything but not enough. The whole time I was expecting how it would end, but it actually suprised me by being just a little different. Then at the very end, it completely changed and I left the game super creeped out, which is rare. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, because it really is a book you can play.
Note: In my experience, there is no save feature. So don't quit half-way through and come back.

This was a fun way to spend 45 minutes. The interface couldn't be much simpler. You click to walk. You click to inspect an object. That's about it. I found the ending predictable, but I still enjoyed it.

Quite a moving little game with a touch of the morbid. It's short enough to explore and complete in a single sitting of maybe an hour if you're thorough, and it's relitively well paced for a game of it's bleak mood and length. Keep in mind that this is in no way an action-packed, exciting nor terrifying game, though it will take your emotions for quite a spin and might inflict a twinge of horror at it's dark twist. Overall I found it to be extremely enjoyable and engaging.
DIFFICULTY: Easy
LENGTH: Single Sitting
SCORE: 7/10

A short but nonetheless interesting game.

As others have pointed out, gameplay is very simple - you click on various items in your surroundings, and listen to the character commenting on them.
The beginning is a bit bland, in hindsight this seems to serve a purpose though, so I highly recommend sticking with it. The story is interesting enough, and the "twist" wasn't quite what I anticipated, which, to me, is always a good thing. All in all a nice game, recommended to everyone who has the patience to listen to this little story unfold.
Con: no saving, shouldn't be a big problem though considering the short length (roughly an hour).

Ah, the influence of adventure games past hangs heavy on this work...very enjoyable. I love seeing the Infocom references everywhere (especially the rug and what may lay below!). This is an enjoyable if tragic story to play, and it is done like the more recent Zork-style games (quicktime VR). A fun little short-story...please do more. Thanks for makimg it free to play.

story-youre a man in a cabin trying to remember what happened between you and your wife

this game is short and only place you can move around is cabin and

gameplay is basically-click on stuff and character starts to remember things.story is slowly revealing itself with each memory and it starts revealing more.........sad stuff

the main character has one of the best voice acting ive ever heard in a indie game-every line he speaks is just so believable.there is also a voice of serena(you dont encounter her,but you hear her voice in memories)and shes good too
seriously, give them an oscar for that performance, its really that good

the cabin itself look kinda creepy and ending makes you ask yourself what happened

its free, story is great and voice acting is excellent......Play it

Interesting game. More of a grim short story. The End actually surprised me. You'll see if you stick it out til the end of the game. I liked it.

"Serena" has something that some other Horror games don't. That slow descent into chaos & madness. It makes you believe that everything is okay at first, but then leaves you concerned & shocked, just as the protagonist was. It's short, but well-worth your time. Kudos to those who voice-acted all of this out. They did a tremendous job, & the same can be said to the developer(s). Thanks for creating such an interesting game. One of which I'll certainly remember.

Pretty decent considering it's free. It's an atmospheric and eerie, point-and-click, one-shot horror game worth spending an hour to an hour and a half on. Good emotional engagement considering its brevity. Strong ending.

I enjoyed this game more than I expected to which was a nice surprise. I've played a lot of indie horror games and went into this game with certain expectations of what the story would be. They were all met except one. The ending was different enough that it wasn't a disappointment.

I found the story interesting even if it did contain fairly common themes for an indie horror game. The writing was far above what I find in most indie games. So many of them have unbearable grammar and almost unintelligible stories. Serena's story made sense, was communicated clearly, and was believable. It relates an unfortunate chapter of someone else's life and made me feel a little sad but mostly left me thinking “Well, that's life”.

The voice acting was clearly done by inexperienced actors but could have been worse. The actors didn't try too hard or go for mellow dramatic line delivery. It may not be professional but it wasn't terrible either.

The graphics were actually very nicely done except for some odd looking labels on some of the books. They gave the game a nice creepy atmosphere as did the music.

The game is very short. It takes about 40-60 minutes to complete though things seem to change subtly every time it is played. Game play (for me) was smooth and without errors. The programming seems solid. The creators put in the time and effort needed to make things work properly and look really nice. The final product is a well crafted short horror game.

What an intense ride for under and hour. It's free, and a wonderful story to be taken in by if you let it. Give it a shot, I'm glad I did.
