Announcing H. P. Lovecraft's The Case of Charles Dexter Ward

Now live on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/1yzkovH

Brothers and Sisters in Almousin-Metraton:—

I this day heard that Senscape got the license for H. P. L. This is a firste in that accurs’d video game industrie; for Players shall be able to delve into Spheres beyond of the sort that Abdool Al-Hazred describ’d in his VII. Booke of ye Necronomicon. I am fearfull, as these Things are Dangerous. I also hear there’s one of those newfangl’d Kickstart’rs involv’d, and Senscape is promis’g the most faithful H. P. L. game ever — crucially a Third-Person Adventure (whatever that meanes) that will throwe Players back to a Golden Age of gaming.

They say renowned scholar and H. P. L. authority S. T. Joshi is assist’g the project, and a rigorous documentary about the making of the game and H. P. L.’s life in Prouidence shall be produced too. It is welle knowne that The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is the only novel H. P. L. wrote, and one of His more popular. The booke tells of ye Adventures of the foolish and naïve Charles as he becomes obsess’d with Witchcrafte and Occult Arts across vintage Prouidence and Salem to calle up Flesh from dead Saltes. Senscape says it is a perfect storie for an Adventure Game adaptation. They are even hint’g at more H. P. L. games if the Kickstart’r Endeavour proves successful enough!

This can not be. I shall arrange for my returne to Prouidence — this news demands my attention, and I must continue in Gett’g at Olde Matters in my Way. In one monthe it shall be Hallow’s Eue and ye Thing is breed’g in ye Outside Spheres. I was tolde many times that One shou’d not call up Any that One can not put downe; but under these circumstances we have no option but to call up Him; the Beyond-One that commandes in Yuggoth; and which ye vaporous brains know by ye untranslatable Sign… and bringe back ye Crawling Shadows to human-kinde.

Do keep the Guards in Shape and Talk often with Those Outside; and waite for my com’g Backe as an Other.

About This Game

How long has it been? A man sits in a distant getaway cabin waiting for his wife Serena. Where is she? Things in the cabin evoke memories, and the husband comes to a disturbing realization...

This short point-and-click adventure is the result of a massive collaborative effort between dozens of fans and designers of adventure games. Rallying to support the venerable genre and its passionate community, these developers have brought together a grim and highly detailed horror story in what is the largest, possibly even the first, game project of its kind. Talents include crew from renowned indie companies Senscape, CBE Software, Infamous Quests, Digital Media Workshop, Guys from Andromeda, and many more.

Features

  • A (twisted) love letter to the adventure game community
  • Over 40 contributors provided their wit and talents
  • Extremely depressive mood, and a bit of fear here and there
  • A haunting story that will challenge your intellect (and temerity)
  • Amazing voice acting by legendary adventure game designer Josh Mandel
  • More awesome acting by popular video producer Pushing Up Roses
  • Yet another overwhelmingly astonishing surprise cameo by an ex-designer from Sierra!
  • Did we mention the gut-wrenching atmosphere?

First off, this is not, in the strictest sense of the word, a game. You literally just point & click to move the story along, there are no puzzles, and even the order in which you click on things makes only a marginal difference.

Second, this is a free install, and you can experience the whole thing in less than an hour. I'm giving it a positive recommendation as a promise that, if you happen to have an hour to kill, you can get something out of playing this, positive or negative. I really think it's that sort of thing where you just have to find it out for yourself and not spend your time reading lots of reviews first and go into it prejudiced.

Play it now, or put it on your list of things to do at some unspecified point in the future, your choice -- but stop reading the reviews. You can come back to them afterwards. If you read just one review, I hope it's this one. :-)

You walk around in a wooden cabin, examining stuff, unfolding the story, which gets creepier and creepier. It's pretty interesting how the mood (the comments of the character and the appearance of the cabin) changes during the course of the game and gets, like I said, darker.

Good story, originally made up (mindf...) ending with a very nice surprise to it -- sure was an hour well spent.

So, this is a free title, so based on that fact, there really isnt a reason for you to not draw your own conclusions and form your own opinion.

For me, this was okay. It seemed pretty obvious to me how this would play out. The ending does leave a bit of mystery, and so you are left to decide what you think actually happened. It's really not scary or shocking or anything, but it is definitely a dark tale.

The gameplay itself is super simplistic. Point and click left mouse, and you can use the space bar to highlight interactive items. Outside of that, it's all about finsing the right sequences to unlock the next part of the story. Everything happens inside the cabin, so you arent really going anywhere althoguh you do move around the cabin examining stuff.

The voice acting was not all that great. Not sure why it was lauded on the store page, lol. Could have been much better.

The actual setting looked nice and the game was easy to grasp. The story itself...you can play through it in about a half hour.

My overall rating for this game would be 6 out of 10. It's not a waste of time, but it's not all that exceptional either. I feel they overhyped the collaborative effort of the various programmers/developers/writers. This game seemed more like the sort of thing you would create in a one or two day workshop (graphics notwithstanding). Still, it's free nd very short, so why not give it a try and see for yourself. A lot of people seemed to have appreciated the artistic effort more than I did. You might be one of those. Check it out and see.

Wow. That story. There are a number of twists along the way...and then when you get to the ending...wow! That ending shocked me. This game has (in alphabetical order) agony, hope, joy, love, regret, spite, suspicion, wonder. You absorb it all in less than one hour. Intense!

Free and nice little game. If you are in a mood for discovering mysteries OR just playing old school quests like Myst, this is the game to play! It's intresting and keeps you in suspense! Still I have to admit that I had a game breaking bug in the ending, that seems to hapeen only to me in my machine.

Serena is a darkly disturbing, emotionally wrenching, severely affecting short little gem. It takes less than an hour to play through. After having played two or three times already, it's a game that is short in duration but stays long in memory. I very much enjoyed playing this game and look forward to playing more games by each of the contributing designers.
