Dev Update - 2015-11-13

From the desk of CapnJosh:

Tasks completed since the last update:

  • UI work, particularly at the code level - it's well-done but pretty complex, so it's taking pretty long to digest.
  • Hosting and parent domain updates for additional development environment  In the future, we'll have everything under *.playhawken.com rather than *.meteor-ent.com.
  • More engine-level work.  DX11 anybody?
  • Updates to the Meteor SDK to support some planned enhancements.
  • Beginning work on the back-end to support better management of mech and weapon stats.
  • Beginning work on 3d model exports and imports.
Upcoming tasks:
  • More UI work
  • Supporting a partner who may make an announcement as early as this week. So keep your Google news alerts tuned to Hawken :)
  • Get the replacement game server host up for Ashburn. The Ashburn host was taken out a earlier than expected, so there will be about a week until the replacement will be ready
  • Start to convert our DEV and Staged environments over to use the *.playhawken.com domain scheme
  • Start work on creating new mech platforms  This is the code-level stuff used by new mechs.

War Wednesday Nov 11 - Weekly Missions Kick-off

Another War Wednesday coming your way! Please suggest games and post your stream links here!

As always, we'll meet up on the community teamspeak ~9:30pm EST: ts5.gameservers.com:9152
For map mods and custom games to request, observe a list of community favorites.

This week I am very excited to introduce weekly missions. This week's mission will be limited to a first-come first-serve basis due to limited prizes. Not all missions will be like this, some may be free-for-all or have teams register in the thread.

If this should go well and attendance supports it, future War Wednesday will feature territory warfare. Yes, I'll do the bookkeeping and all you pilots can steal imaginary land from each other.

About This Game

HAWKEN is a multiplayer first person shooter for PC that places you inside a mechanized war machine on the battlefield of a dystopian world called Illal. With strategic, fast-paced gameplay, HAWKEN features incredible alien landscapes, customizable and upgradable mechs, and dynamic experiences across multiple competitive game modes.

HAWKEN features 6 game modes: Team Deathmatch, Co-Op Bot Destruction, Missile Assault, Siege, Deathmatch and Co-Op TDM. Each mode offers a unique gameplay experience that requires a different approach and hones a separate set of skills.

  • Team Deathmatch
Two teams of six group together and battle as a team in a race to 40 kills. Fighting as a group and knowing when to play defensively is essential to survival.

  • Co-Op Bot Destruction
Team up with three other pilots for 25 waves of increasingly intense encounters against computer controlled mechs and attack drones. Every fifth wave is led by one or more elite boss mechs that can’t be defeated alone. Move as a group, plan your attack, and spend your resources wisely to eek out a victory against all odds. Co-Op Bot Destruction is currently available on the Facility and Front Line maps, each featuring a unique set of enemies.

  • Missile Assault
Split your team of six into groups and compete over three missile silos spread across the map. Capture a silo and maintain control over it to launch missiles against the enemy team’s base ship. Control all three missile silos to do bonus damage and end the battle even sooner. Flexibility and effective use of items are the key to destroying the enemy base before they destroy yours.

  • Siege
Collect EU from two energy sources in neutral territory and return them to base to launch an attack ship at the enemy base. Fight for control over the Anti Aircraft battery in the center of the map to keep your ship from being shot down before it reaches and destroys the enemy base. There is no time limit in Siege, but every ship you launch is more powerful than the last.

  • Deathmatch
Watch your radar and be careful not to expose yourself until you have the advantage in an intense free-for-all battle. The player with the highest score after 10 minutes wins.

  • Co-Op TDM
Team up with 5 other pilots for online TDM against computer controlled mechs. If you want to jump into a match and have some fun without concerning yourself with human opponents, then this is the mode for you!

HAWKEN features a wide range of customization options that allow you to craft a unique look and equipment loadout that other players will remember.

  • Cosmetic
Strike fear in your enemies and confidence in your allies with unique trim colors & paint patterns, chassis parts, thrusters, and repair drones. Taunt defeated opponents and make your teammates laugh with comic mech emotes and deployable hologram generators. Make yourself at home in your mech by using cockpit decorations, custom HUD colors and different combinations of primary and secondary reticles!

  • Practical
Customize your play style and abilities with passive internals and deployable items. Internals take one to three of six available internal slots and range in effect from giving your mech a unique ability, such as dashing or doing a 180 spin in mid-air, to temporarily boosting damage or healing each time you gain a kill or assist. Items can serve as an additional weapon (e.g. EMPs, Grenades), a deployable piece of equipment that helps you and your teammates (e.g. Portable Scanner, Shield) or one that disrupts your enemies (e.g. Machine Gun or Rocket Turret, Radar Scrambler). Select a loadout that matches your play style to defeat your enemies quickly, support your team, or control tactically important areas of the map.

Game Guide

HAWKEN offers pilots numerous mechs in three different weight classes that fill a variety of distinct roles on the battlefield. Find the mechs that match your play style and study the strengths and weaknesses of enemy mechs in our comprehensive mech guide.
http://www.playhawken.com/game-guide/mechs

HAWKEN has numerous maps to explore. But you can’t always enjoy the scenery--or get your bearings--while boosting away from enemies. Our Map Guide includes interactive maps showing major points of interest for every game mode on every map, plus lore, screenshots, gameplay tips, and more.
http://www.playhawken.com/game-guide/maps

Every mech starts with one primary weapon. You can purchase two additional primary weapons in the garage. You can purchase the alternate primary weapon at mech rank 3 and the prestige weapon at mech rank 5. You can swap your primary weapon in the Garage or in the Staging Area before a match or between respawns. Each mech only has one secondary weapon. They cannot be switched out for alternatives like primary weapons. However, all secondary weapons possess a special ability that provides additional functionality. Use the middle mouse button to activate that ability.
http://www.playhawken.com/game-guide/weapons

HAWKEN lets you change your equipment to customize and upgrade your mechs. You can equip a variety of useful items and deploy them in battle to gain an edge over your opponents.

HAWKEN represents a blasting action, packed with some awesome original gameplay features and impressive quality of video/sound. Pretty optimized I got to admit. Genre: first person shooter (cabin camera), multiplayer only (pvp + co-op tdm and bots destruction).
Probably best game about Mechs is dying, another victim of 21st century marketing strategies we all hate (free-to-play EA title, with it's own currency and store). If you're lucky to find a full lobby, don't expect any balance between noobies and pre-made party of vets.
I believe this game's best times passed away and we should just leave it be.

Terrible matchmaking, unless you want to always get destroyed, avoid.

Game mechanics are nice, multiple class are nice too, but seriously, you're useless until your either are high level or pay to win.

Learning and grinding curve should point you toward another game.

Great gameplay, good graphics, well balanced. Basically perfect for mecha-loving people who want a fairly competative game. But the devs have abandoned it. But give it a spin for sure.

It's epicly good. Like, really, really great ... everything. But the game is dead. It never left "early access" mode and the company behind it is in ruins. To the devs ... amazing job. To the business folks ... you have all let us down (sorry, I know you are real humans with feelings, can't win em' all).

If this game would have not imploded it would probably be the best mech game ever. Arena style at least. I still hope somebody swoops up the rights to the game and pulls it out of the ♥♥♥♥ box it's slipped into.

Definitely do not buy this game unless you 1) you are ok with it being potentially a totally dead online scene OR 2) it has been necromanced back to life by some miracle.

I have always been happy to play this game and I would reccomend it to anyone with interests similar to my own. The science fiction elements of this game and the design elements that make up Hawken create an atmospheric quality that I would be hard pressed to find in any other title with similar themes. I have been a Hawken player for a relativley long time and now, I don't find myself wanting to turn to other games.
The gameplay is fast paced and extremly aggressive at high lvls. The most difficut thing about Hawken however is not leveling up, it is knowing when to quit.

Too many words to describe KAWKEN. Firstly, the graphics or pretty good considering the ammount that goes on in the game. And the mech customization is perfect over 20+ different mech's with different abilities sizes and stats finding the one for you is what makes the game so fun. Whe mechanics of the game make it so fun too you have to work to get good you can buy your way to the top and its not about single handedly reking, you have to do damage n' hope you team is there for you.

I LOVE THIS GAME. That's the only simple way top put it.

PRO'S

-The community is one of the least toxic i've ever come across, they are mostly friendly anf fun to play with.
-The mechanics are easy to get the hang of
-Many different classes to suit all roles
-General gamplay is just engaging and fun
-Music is sick
-Feels absolutley awesome when you go on like a 5 kill streak (Which does happen sometimes)

CON's

-The game is developing excrutiatingly slowly, I would put money into it but if the developers don't show signs of life, I may not
-Could be considered pay to win at the start as the first robots are a slow grind to get and so many items are 'easily unlockable' with premium currency. However with grindable currency every game changing item can be bought and there are no incredibly expensive things.

In short developers CONTINUE DEVELOPING. This game is awesome...

Nightfire:
"The community generally agrees that the classic Assault mech that you start with is actually the most powerful mech in the game (by a hair). So I'm not sure how this game could be considered "pay to win".

For those who have the old CR-T Fred mech, they can use the promo code "LOADEDASSAULT" to get a better, fully equipped Assault for free."

The code Nightfire specified is a working code, and will help any new players out there

If Hawken were released in the 90s, it would have an ad-campaign that mocks Mech Warrior with some tagline like, "this isn't your granddaddy's mech game!" Everything in Hawken is fast paced and aggressive, so if you've come expecting a mech simulator, then prepare to be disappointed. If you came looking for the thrill of giant robots and the mayhem of explosions and gunfire, then this is the game for you...or you can go watch a Michael Bay Transformers movie...or Pacific Rim...but yeah, mostly, play this game.

One of my current favorite games to play and the only one I've really played for a few months (other than Planetside 2). Free to play - with a great feel for movement and firing in your mech. I highly reccommend giving the game a try - and sticking with it. The player base deserves to be bigger for such a fun game - just persevere through the tricky start when you're up against good players - and you'll soon see yourself improving.

Play and have fun!

An intense, fast paced and challenging FPS like no other that puts you in the cockpit of a battle mech.

Gameplay is repetetive but fun, engaging and addictive. A comparasion I could use is CSGO as that's only got a few gamemodes and is repetetive yet the gameplay makes up for it.
The mechs are diverse and fun to use coming with unique playstyles and a real element of teamwork and dynamic between them when in action. There is also a good range of weapons specific to certain mechs that are unlocked at each stage of the players progression on that mech.
The gamemodes are also few but interesting and engaging: some objective based and some deathmatch based. Siege is like the CSGO competetive of the game in the sense that it's the biggest gamemode (And its ♥♥♥♥ing awesome). Personally I think the gameplay is a lot less repetetive than CSGO but just as unique.
Graphics and effects are fantasic yet not at all demanding and the audio is immersive coming with a chest pumping soundtrack.
However the gameplay might not be for some people- the movement system takes hours of practice and perfection even though the tutorial covers most of it. Plays have to learn how the movement system applies to their mech specifically and get a feel for the whole thing. There is a real feeling that the mechs have weight and are not super nimble and agile although this can be overcome with lighter mechs and practice. The game puts new players in a good all rounder mech that gives them a good chance when starting out though. You will still get mowed down by seasoned players though so don't give up.
Another thing I should mention is that the game has had hardly any development for ages since the game got new publishers. Everything is quite shady and it seems a little lifeless when it comes to development news and intimacy between devs and players. This is because the devs are currently working on fixing the coding due to some problems they ran into. After this they say they will work on 'polishing the performance' of the game more. They then say they will add new content after this and enter- and I quote- "launch season- that wonderful time of year when a game gets to show if how much its been training in the off-season". All the tutorials and reviews are at least 2-3 years old now. I wouldn't say the game is dead at all; I would just say it's dormant. There is a huge decline in players though- across all servers. I would say on average I only see 40 players on at a time. The only gamemodes with people on are TDM and siege- and siege is if you're lucky (people do play other gamemodes but on rare occasions).
Speaking of players and player interaction there is a distinct lack of mechanics in the game that encourage it. Push to talk is broken and the only social part of the game is a friends list and a 6 v 6 party match gamemode (nobody ever plays that gamemode though).

I've played HAWKEN for a long while, and have periodically dropped in to revisit it. I think that I should give this game some credit - as a game, it's superb. The design and style of the mechs, the maps, and the GUI make for a very immersive feel, as they all slot together so well; the depiction of the HUD as the inside of the mech also really puts you in the shoes of who you're playing as. Fights are very, very intense, with often entire teams full of mechs saturating a single capture point: flying over one another, swiftly dodging attacks, etc. - there's so much to take in, all at once, and it's brilliant!

The mechs are cleverly designed in aesthetics and otherwise, being appropriately balanced, and also, having an entire arsenal of unlocks to compliment the strengths of your mechs. The classes a varied and defined, and this game can cater for all playing styles that we typically see in a modern FPS. Furthermore, there is a good sense of personalisation for your mechs, because you can choose which retrofits, (or interior mechanisms), you'd like to install on your mechs to aid you in battle, and also, changing the appearance of your mechs is also easy, for a small price. The customisation options are very broad, from simply changing colours, to completely replacing your thrusters and hull!

HAWKEN has a series of interesting game modes that it has to offer, from simple deathmatches, to attacks on bases that can last up to half an hour - sometimes more, and each game mode can have varying pace and intensity of combat. While I personally feel that HAWKEN could offer more in terms of game modes, I can appreciate the situation that the current developers are in, (it's quite a sticky one), and can also enjoy the excellent modes that we already have.

So, for an Early Access game, this one is fantastic. It really is. It feels so nice to play, everything is smooth and well-oiled, and the design and customisation elements of the game are superb. HAWKEN has to have one of the most well-continued and expressed art styles, (resembling something dystopian) that is consistent throughout all areas of aesthetic design, that I have ever seen, and as an FPS, well: it's fun, it's fast, and there's a heap of classes that you can choose from and kit out to your heart's content! While the developers are having a difficult time at present, and the game is indeed lacking in some areas, it's kept me coming back, and so many others too. For an F2P EA shooter, this is astoundingly good, and great fun to play!

I'd give it a good 8/10, for now. I'm sure that, given time, that score will increase! Good luck HAWKEN, and good luck to those of you who start playing! You won't regret joining!

I have played this game for a very long time. Only recently did I start playing the game on my steam account because I found it easier to connect with friends and log my hours, etc. Overall, this game is truly a work of art. It is a Free 2 Play game that sticks with that fundamental label. You are completely allowed to buy whatever you wish with real money, but you are able to get any mech or weapon you choose just by playing the game. I haven't spent a dime on the game and I've enjoyed myself with every hour. I was invited to its alpha and it has come such a long way and continually provides me with a sense of "Pacific Rim" Mech-Style fighting just without the giant monsters popping out of nowhere. If you want to pee lightning because of how scared you are that the one ♥♥♥♥♥♥-canoe-of-a-guy that controls a Predator comes out of nowhere to end your killstreak, then this is the game for you. Happy hunting!

One of the best FTP games i've tried.

Runs great, looks great, plays great, and its free so cant hurt to try.

I just wish there were more maps, and more modes, and it seems the same tactics are used by hyperactive players to win (which includes paying for better stuff)
