CapnJosh Weekly Update - 2015-07-02

Developments:

1. Double HC weekend starts now!

2. We've significantly increased the HC rewards for new user achievements
  - The idea is to remove the sense of too much grind
  - New users should be able to buy new stuff - more choice, more fun, less stress at making the "wrong purchase choice"
  - We will be watching "the numbers" to see how it *actually* affects the new user experience

3. We're reviving a different gameserver management system that may actually improve performance a bit
  - It's Ansible-based in case you like that level of detail ;)

4. We have an all-new server in Dallas
  - look for "dallas2"
  - it's running in an Internap data center (they're way into good networking)

5. Community tournaments - if you're running one or if you want to run one, send in a support ticket and tell us about it
  - We want to help make your event a success.
  - those "na" servers are running with this

6. There's a cosmetic item available for HC that's usually only an MC item.
  - Be quick though, this time it really is a limited-time-only thing

7. Probably the most important development this last week was this: http://www.megabots.com/
  - I started talking with them.  How could we partner up?  What do you think?
  - Does this mean we need to somehow challenge the MWO team? Post your feedback to https://community.playhawken.com/topic/2666-weekly-update-2015-07-02/

About This Game

HAWKEN is a multiplayer first person shooter for PC that places you inside a mechanized war machine on the battlefield of a dystopian world called Illal. With strategic, fast-paced gameplay, HAWKEN features incredible alien landscapes, customizable and upgradable mechs, and dynamic experiences across multiple competitive game modes.

HAWKEN features 6 game modes: Team Deathmatch, Co-Op Bot Destruction, Missile Assault, Siege, Deathmatch and Co-Op TDM. Each mode offers a unique gameplay experience that requires a different approach and hones a separate set of skills.

  • Team Deathmatch
Two teams of six group together and battle as a team in a race to 40 kills. Fighting as a group and knowing when to play defensively is essential to survival.

  • Co-Op Bot Destruction
Team up with three other pilots for 25 waves of increasingly intense encounters against computer controlled mechs and attack drones. Every fifth wave is led by one or more elite boss mechs that can’t be defeated alone. Move as a group, plan your attack, and spend your resources wisely to eek out a victory against all odds. Co-Op Bot Destruction is currently available on the Facility and Front Line maps, each featuring a unique set of enemies.

  • Missile Assault
Split your team of six into groups and compete over three missile silos spread across the map. Capture a silo and maintain control over it to launch missiles against the enemy team’s base ship. Control all three missile silos to do bonus damage and end the battle even sooner. Flexibility and effective use of items are the key to destroying the enemy base before they destroy yours.

  • Siege
Collect EU from two energy sources in neutral territory and return them to base to launch an attack ship at the enemy base. Fight for control over the Anti Aircraft battery in the center of the map to keep your ship from being shot down before it reaches and destroys the enemy base. There is no time limit in Siege, but every ship you launch is more powerful than the last.

  • Deathmatch
Watch your radar and be careful not to expose yourself until you have the advantage in an intense free-for-all battle. The player with the highest score after 10 minutes wins.

  • Co-Op TDM
Team up with 5 other pilots for online TDM against computer controlled mechs. If you want to jump into a match and have some fun without concerning yourself with human opponents, then this is the mode for you!

HAWKEN features a wide range of customization options that allow you to craft a unique look and equipment loadout that other players will remember.

  • Cosmetic
Strike fear in your enemies and confidence in your allies with unique trim colors & paint patterns, chassis parts, thrusters, and repair drones. Taunt defeated opponents and make your teammates laugh with comic mech emotes and deployable hologram generators. Make yourself at home in your mech by using cockpit decorations, custom HUD colors and different combinations of primary and secondary reticles!

  • Practical
Customize your play style and abilities with passive internals and deployable items. Internals take one to three of six available internal slots and range in effect from giving your mech a unique ability, such as dashing or doing a 180 spin in mid-air, to temporarily boosting damage or healing each time you gain a kill or assist. Items can serve as an additional weapon (e.g. EMPs, Grenades), a deployable piece of equipment that helps you and your teammates (e.g. Portable Scanner, Shield) or one that disrupts your enemies (e.g. Machine Gun or Rocket Turret, Radar Scrambler). Select a loadout that matches your play style to defeat your enemies quickly, support your team, or control tactically important areas of the map.

Game Guide

HAWKEN offers pilots numerous mechs in three different weight classes that fill a variety of distinct roles on the battlefield. Find the mechs that match your play style and study the strengths and weaknesses of enemy mechs in our comprehensive mech guide.
http://www.playhawken.com/game-guide/mechs

HAWKEN has numerous maps to explore. But you can’t always enjoy the scenery--or get your bearings--while boosting away from enemies. Our Map Guide includes interactive maps showing major points of interest for every game mode on every map, plus lore, screenshots, gameplay tips, and more.
http://www.playhawken.com/game-guide/maps

Every mech starts with one primary weapon. You can purchase two additional primary weapons in the garage. You can purchase the alternate primary weapon at mech rank 3 and the prestige weapon at mech rank 5. You can swap your primary weapon in the Garage or in the Staging Area before a match or between respawns. Each mech only has one secondary weapon. They cannot be switched out for alternatives like primary weapons. However, all secondary weapons possess a special ability that provides additional functionality. Use the middle mouse button to activate that ability.

HAWKEN lets you change your equipment to customize and upgrade your mechs. You can equip a variety of useful items and deploy them in battle to gain an edge over your opponents.

TL;DR REVIEW
(for prospective players on the go!)

Hawken is a fast-paced twitch FPS masquerading as a MOBA where assymetrical class-based gameplay relies heavily on coordinated teamwork to accomplish goals. Game modes include variations of PvP and co-op, but no single-player campaign as of now.

The game has a steep intial learning curve, but a seemingly endless depth to the level of mastery (think skiing). It has big hits (think NFL and NHL) and explosions (think F1). It has immenesly satisfying, clutch skill shots (think NBA). It has misdirection and stealth (think chess). It has ganking and flanking (think DOTA2/LoL). And more!

Graphics are still pretty, sound is immersive and overall design is unique. Matches often achieve down-to-the-wire balance. Playerbase is small, but helpful. A few bugs, but all minor and none game-breaking. It is Free-to-Play, not Pay-to-Win.

Overall, Hawken one of most unique and rewarding shooters on the market. So... Why haven't you installed Hawken, yet?

IN DEPTH REVIEW

Let's start with the question on everyone's mind: What happened to Hawken?

BACK IN THE DAY

Hawken was developed as F2P first person mech shooter by the now-defunct Adhesive Games and published by the also-now-defunct Meteor Entertainment (WAH wah). After garnering a lot of hype and many awards from E3 2012, the game was released to the public on 12-12-12 in open beta. However, due to numerous factors, Hawken failed to capture a large enough player base to gain any long-term traction.

NOWADAYS

Hawken has since been purchased by Reloaded Games, a game publisher with experience resurrecting online multiplayer IP (see APB: Reloaded (also, I just got that!)). The playerbase, while small, remains a constant mix of new and dedicated players.

Now that's all out of the way, we can move on to the useful bits of the review; the cool section where you'll learn what Hawken is/isn't and some pros/cons to help you decide if this game for you. I mean, you know how reviews work, I didn't need to explain that.

Unleash the bulleted lists for selective reading!

USEFUL BITS OF THE REVIEW

Hawken is:
  • Fast-paced - Boosting, jumping and dodging speed up the pace of the game.
  • Assymetrical action - Different classes, mechs and weapons taken a step further with pilot's choice of items and internals (passives).
  • Multiplayer - 6v6 up to 12v12 PvP in 4 game modes: TDM, DM, Missile Assualt (cap and hold) and Siege (unique to Hawken) as well as 4p co-op bot destruction.
  • A MOBA masquerading as a twich FPS - The mental aspect of team comps, abilities, cool downs coupled with the physical aspect of aiming, shooting and dodging.

Hawken is not:
  • Mechwarrior - Hawken is a different experience than Mechwarrior and traditional mech games.
  • P2W - You can pay for XP and credit boosts, but players gain no in-game advantage other than unlocking early. (besides, the starter mech is a Golden God!)
  • Single player - No single player campaign as of the date of this review.
  • Perfect - there are still minor technical issues (walls OP), but nothing that greatly diminishes the experience of the game.

Pros
  • Very Balanced - Assymetry is difficult to pull off and keep everyone happy. Every mech has the potentional to be deadly in Hawken and matches that don't have an influx of new players joining mid-match often come down to the wire with close scores and even sudden death.
  • Gorgeous Graphics - Looked amazing in 2012, and still looks great. The designers put an enormous amount of detail into various aspects of the maps and mechs. Users with higher end cards will want to run Hawken on highest settings to achieve the highest frequency of dopamine squirts due pleasing visual stimuli.
  • Immersive Sound - Hawken rewards players with 7.1 headsets or surround sound setups. The sound design rewards pilots who key in on audible clues. The Sound designers also added nice suble sound effects, such as the rippling of a roof flap on a tent in a tiny (well, man-sized) market in a desert bazaar.
  • Duels - One of the sweetest moments in Hawken is when you 1v1 an enemy without interference from your teams. Any mech can beat any other mech - if you die in a duel, it was your own fault, and perhaps that's what makes coming out of them alive so rewarding.
  • Helpful Community - Every online competitive game has ragers, and while Hawken is no exception, the majority of players are happy to help new players with tips and overall strategy. Just ask, don't rage! If you encounter someone who is ragin'. just remember the same rules apply in Hawken as they do elsewhere: do not feed the trolls and they will go back to their underbridges.
  • No One-Shot Kills* - I love shooters, but getting constantly sniped from a guy on mountain top 8 klicks away can get old quickly. Players at full health can still die quickly, but never from one shot/barrage from one player. *(Note: small mechs beware of predator traps)
  • Customization and Leveling - This may not sound like a "pro" list item to some shooter fans, but Hawken implements it well enough. Customizing game-affecting weapons, items and internals as well as cosmectic changes like skins, chassis parts, cross-hairs and even cockpit decor (bobbleheads and half-eaten chinese food ftw!), the gameplay is made deepener through a sense of progression and self styling.
  • Deep Level of Mastery - Years after the release of Hawken, players are still finding and perfecting minor techniques to improve their game play. And like any great shooter, practice makes perfect.
  • A Truly Unique Game - Hawken is a game many once-abandoned players revisit again and again, not only for the reasons above because it does online PVP in way that no other FPS really does. We're not talking about unique game modes, but Hawken's very distinct atmosphere and play style. There is a reason Hawken won so many awards at E3 2012 and players who can make over that initial learning curve hump will see why.

Cons
  • Very Small Playerbase - This can affect new players simply by virtue of being placed in a server with someone who has a lot more experience. Usually when that happens, chances are YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A BAD TIME.
  • Difficult to Learn - A few people take to Hawken's gameplay naturally in just a few matches. The majority of new players, however, take a while longer to feel comfortable in the cockpit of their mech.
  • Long Grind on Mech Leveling - It can take anywhere from a few days to couple of weeks to level a mech fully. This can be tedious if you're just trying to unlock a later-level weapon for that mech without paying to unlock it early.
  • Lag Issues on Far-Away Servers - "Well, of course!" you say. We all know online PVPers want low pings, but pings that reach 70-80 or higher show an immediate affect on gameplay.
  • Uncertain future - One developer and one publisher are now donezo (technical term) after releasing Hawken and a new developer bought up the rights for a song. No one knows what will happen going forward, but is this different than most games these days?

What can i tell you, started a year ago.
Nothing changed.

Still less than 10 maps to play, still random crahses from time to time, still no new mechs, no new weapons, balance and match making still an issue, less and less players as a result of zero progress.

For a game that is aiming at competitive fast paced FPS multiplayer, it cant have 10 or less maps.
Of course, game in early access can be anything, but really, its been years since its being developed.
Id honestly say, either make progress or close it down.

Got issues that might be only me but even at low ping, i seem to hit a moving target when i miss it behind a bit, and miss it if i fire dead on. Thats an issue for snipers while spalsh damage doesnt register a hit everytime on moving targets. That might be just me tho. But i did find a few players with same problems.

I generally love it and hate it. I keep coming back and get forced to leave it for the above mentioned reasons.
Its just weird. And sad. Such an awesome concept.

It was an amazing project back than, and id give it a recommendation but since theres no progress for over a year worth noticing, no content, ill have to give it a not recomended status.

Ofc, its F2P so go try it out urself, so nothing too loose there. Maybe i just noob at it too much.
What i definitly wont recommend is buying any package or in game currentcy for real money till you play it some time and are sure the developers earned it.

This is my first FPS that isn't Metroid Prime or Portal. I have little experience with games like this, apart from 2 hours playing CoD Black Ops at a friend's house. This is a really fun game, with the best soundtrack ever. I still barely understand how the garage works, and am still getting used to most of the manuvers. Also, the chat settings has a profanity filter (thank god) and most of the time the people you play with are nice anyway. I only own one mech (I think...), but you can take others out for test runs. But the thing is, if your computer is slow, you will have lag like you won't believe. My computer is probably below average when it comes to speed, and sometimes it runs really smooth, no problems, and sometimes it lags to unplayable, even with the lowest video settings.

Overall, definitely get it unless your computer is slow, because I get the feeling someday it will be a paid game, it's that good.

Oh, and P.S. You need a Meteor account to play. It's easy to sign up and they don't email you constantly with updates, like Skype does. (ugh). You need to log in every time you play.

P.P.S. It needs to sync your account and stats before you start playing and when you join a server. It takes a few minutes.
