About This Game

HAWKEN is a multiplayer first person shooter for PC that places you inside a mechanized war machine on the battlefield of a dystopian world called Illal. With strategic, fast-paced gameplay, HAWKEN features incredible alien landscapes, customizable and upgradable mechs, and dynamic experiences across multiple competitive game modes.

HAWKEN features 6 game modes: Team Deathmatch, Co-Op Bot Destruction, Missile Assault, Siege, Deathmatch and Co-Op TDM. Each mode offers a unique gameplay experience that requires a different approach and hones a separate set of skills.

  • Team Deathmatch
Two teams of six group together and battle as a team in a race to 40 kills. Fighting as a group and knowing when to play defensively is essential to survival.

  • Co-Op Bot Destruction
Team up with three other pilots for 25 waves of increasingly intense encounters against computer controlled mechs and attack drones. Every fifth wave is led by one or more elite boss mechs that can’t be defeated alone. Move as a group, plan your attack, and spend your resources wisely to eek out a victory against all odds. Co-Op Bot Destruction is currently available on the Facility and Front Line maps, each featuring a unique set of enemies.

  • Missile Assault
Split your team of six into groups and compete over three missile silos spread across the map. Capture a silo and maintain control over it to launch missiles against the enemy team’s base ship. Control all three missile silos to do bonus damage and end the battle even sooner. Flexibility and effective use of items are the key to destroying the enemy base before they destroy yours.

  • Siege
Collect EU from two energy sources in neutral territory and return them to base to launch an attack ship at the enemy base. Fight for control over the Anti Aircraft battery in the center of the map to keep your ship from being shot down before it reaches and destroys the enemy base. There is no time limit in Siege, but every ship you launch is more powerful than the last.

  • Deathmatch
Watch your radar and be careful not to expose yourself until you have the advantage in an intense free-for-all battle. The player with the highest score after 10 minutes wins.

  • Co-Op TDM
Team up with 5 other pilots for online TDM against computer controlled mechs. If you want to jump into a match and have some fun without concerning yourself with human opponents, then this is the mode for you!

HAWKEN features a wide range of customization options that allow you to craft a unique look and equipment loadout that other players will remember.

  • Cosmetic
Strike fear in your enemies and confidence in your allies with unique trim colors & paint patterns, chassis parts, thrusters, and repair drones. Taunt defeated opponents and make your teammates laugh with comic mech emotes and deployable hologram generators. Make yourself at home in your mech by using cockpit decorations, custom HUD colors and different combinations of primary and secondary reticles!

  • Practical
Customize your play style and abilities with passive internals and deployable items. Internals take one to three of six available internal slots and range in effect from giving your mech a unique ability, such as dashing or doing a 180 spin in mid-air, to temporarily boosting damage or healing each time you gain a kill or assist. Items can serve as an additional weapon (e.g. EMPs, Grenades), a deployable piece of equipment that helps you and your teammates (e.g. Portable Scanner, Shield) or one that disrupts your enemies (e.g. Machine Gun or Rocket Turret, Radar Scrambler). Select a loadout that matches your play style to defeat your enemies quickly, support your team, or control tactically important areas of the map.

Game Guide

HAWKEN offers pilots numerous mechs in three different weight classes that fill a variety of distinct roles on the battlefield. Find the mechs that match your play style and study the strengths and weaknesses of enemy mechs in our comprehensive mech guide.

HAWKEN has numerous maps to explore. But you can’t always enjoy the scenery--or get your bearings--while boosting away from enemies. Our Map Guide includes interactive maps showing major points of interest for every game mode on every map, plus lore, screenshots, gameplay tips, and more.

Every mech starts with one primary weapon. You can purchase two additional primary weapons in the garage. You can purchase the alternate primary weapon at mech rank 3 and the prestige weapon at mech rank 5. You can swap your primary weapon in the Garage or in the Staging Area before a match or between respawns. Each mech only has one secondary weapon. They cannot be switched out for alternatives like primary weapons. However, all secondary weapons possess a special ability that provides additional functionality. Use the middle mouse button to activate that ability.

HAWKEN lets you change your equipment to customize and upgrade your mechs. You can equip a variety of useful items and deploy them in battle to gain an edge over your opponents.

The game has officially been abandoned by the developers, it won't be updated anymore. It is only a matter of time till the servers will go offline. Do NOT put ANY money into this game!!! EUROPEAN server region is dead !!!

The game is good and probably the best mech combat Fps game out there, since it is free to play i encourage you to try it. However if you are from europe i don't reccomend trying it out unless you don't mind to play on US servers with horrible ping and lag issues, since the European server region is dead.

Ah HAWKEN... I've been playing this game since Beta and it's absolutely gorgeous. Fast and fluid. Intense and gritty. If you're looking for a fast paced mech' combat fps, this tops the genre. It allows you to play fast, furious, and twitch without suspending the disbelief that you are piloting a massive combat robot. So many things add to the flavor. Different mechs have different abilities, different classes of mech provide differences in speed, health, and weaponry. It's a little more polished and refined than it was when it was still the independant indie game that hadn't yet been picked up by Steam. There are things I dislike, such as getting rid of the skill trees, but it truly is better off in the long run. It's also free to play! There are in game purchases, but if you put a little time in you can buy your own mechs with the in game currency quick enough. You just have to know what game mode to play. I suggest Seige. Collect and return all the EU you can to get mad money. Game modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Missle Command, and Seige. Deathmatch I does not need an explaination. In missle command, you have to capture nav points basically, which are essentially giant missle turrets that shoot at your enemies mother ship. In seige, you collect energy units, or EU, and return it to base in order to launch your teams mothership. Once launched, your team has to defend the only anti-air turret on the map so your mothership can go and pummel the enemies base, whilst your enemy is trying to do the same to you. Stunning graphics, fluid gameplay, great musical score and sound fx... and it's free. What have you got to lose?

I could do a review of the gameplay, but it would only be a formality at this point, since the essential services have all but ceased. Entire server regions are shutting down without any stated reason or warning (European Region is down) and the game hasn't been updated for several months, with zero word from the developers on anything.

Please note, I'm not angry here, mostly disappointed.
This was one of an extremely rare few recent games in the mech genre. I'm do not like nor trust the F2P model much at all, but I had hopes that by existing, this could spur development of other new mech games.

Abandoned by the dev team to die after crippling the game, Hawken WAS a beautiful and fun game with mechs. Now, it is a shadow of what it was with little to no active players.

It was funny to say 'its Call of Duty but mechs', but with the latest actual updates it was turned very literally into "Call of Duty: Mechs". All machines are flimsy and fall apart at the slightest provocation, making every match spawn-run-die, instead of having some method to the madness.

Objective problems with certain weapons were not addressed for months before sweeping changes were made to the entire game, leaving out several glaring problems.

And then the entirety of progression was changed again, stripping out all customization and unique playstyles. Balance was thrown out the window in favour of making everything vulnerable to everything. The game stopped being played, and promptly became a dead Early Access title.

This is no longer a fun, supported game. Do not waste your time.

This is a very fun game but it is 100% abandoned by the developers. Download it. Play the tutorial. Then enjoy. When you are bored move on without a shread of guilt.

There is no need to buy anything or support anything. It is a solid, fast paced first person shooter with mechs. If the devs actually cared this game would be stellar but in it's current form it is still fun.

EDIT- I've learned that the Devs have disbanded. :c Please don't go. Good games always die the saddest :( If they comeback and revive. This will be the most sickest comeback ever. Finally the game started working and now *without the syncing account bug*, I enjoy this game so so so so much. Its just sad to know about the end about the healthy state of hawken.

I fell in love with HAWKEN. This is a amazingly built game and graphics are stunning. But if they would fix infinite syncing account issue, I would be playing this game literally non-stop.

Would I recommend this game? Yes. Because its free. If you don't have the infinite sync issue, then I'm jealous of you. Game play is stunning, Customization of the mech itself is a amazing feature I prefer. But just because of these small problems drives me mad that can easily be fixed.

Hawken has to be one of the best developed and technically-articulated mech games that I have played. I have been with Hawken for a long time and have seen it grown to become closer to what the player wants from a great game like Hawken. HOWEVER, the original developers have LEFT; the game has NO administration or community to contact for help; Steam only serves the game but does nothing to ensure it's perfection for players. The game has a few exploits that players do take advantage of. The overall gameplay is phenomonal, but some mechs if well played can be a real pain and might need to be turned down a little. I love this game. I left this game and came right back when I could because it is really well done. This is THE Mech Warrior COLOSSEUM game and MUST be well maintained and preserved because a game like this could be GOING PLACES.

I pray that people pay more attention to this game. I love it and I don't want it to fade into obscurity and go the way of the now-ruined Battlefield and Call of Duty series.

Amazing game! Exactly the kind of shooter I've been looking for, but too bad it sounds like the developers may have abandoned it. Hopefully some rekindled interest and recent positive acclaim will get them going again to finally finish this thing. The community may have shrunk but if it's properly marketed it has a great deal of potential and would be unfortunate if they simply gave that up and moved on.

This game was amazing. back in alpha and beta (before steam) this game had character, feel, grit. you were these massive hulking machines fighting for the chance, not just to win, but to live. I got sucked into this game, Hawken had me from the start, throwing everything down on the line and if you were good enough, you might have a chance. each mech had a role, a purpose. if you were a heavy you mopped up the damage and shot it back, mediums you flew into battle supporting your heavies, laying down the dps, flanking, out dancing the opponents. lights healed their teammates, sniped the weak and chased down the enemies too cowardly to fight with low hp. damn, i miss that game.

but the merge with steam, brought patch after patch. less hp, less damage, less "TTK", less players, less fun, longer ques, more caustic interactions, more whinning, more sweeping loses, less hard earned wins.

after the devs nuked this game, then gave up on it. its this complex machine without any fire left. and that hurts the most. i think of it as an amazing one night stand, quick deep lustful passionate heartwrenching mind boggling, then you wake up and its over, they left you now have to fill that void that is so apparent empty now. i miss that game. ♥♥♥♥.

This game is quite fun, easily the best Free To Play I've seen in recent years. Before it was on Steam I also played it, it's the exact same game, just carried over.

Graphics are great
Soundscape is very nice
Combat is balanced and rewards skill
Is not Pay to Win
Fun/competitive gameplay
*HAD* a good player base.

That last point is not to discourage you from playing the game, just be wary that matchmaking will take longer, and realize that this game is no-longer in its prime do to it being online only.

As far as free Mech FPS games go, probably the best I have played available on steam. veteran of Mech assault, Armored core and chromehound, of the three i would most compare this game to armored core.

I used to love playing this game. Like many other reviewers will tell you, there was so much potential to be had. However, I have a list of grievances.

-there just aren't alot of people playing anymore. Half a year ago, when the game should've been more active, it would take, on average, 20 minutes just to find a server with people playing. Maybe it's changed, I couldn't tell you. Things just died down and there was no sign of coming back.
-the game also had some problems in terms of balance. Some mechs were just overpowered, while others barely saw use. The devs did their best to balance all the cool robots, but at the end of the day, it just wasn't enough.
-Hawken fell into the oldest trap of many F2P games: making it pay2win. Half the mechs you couldn't access unless you purchased them, or played the game, grinding points nonstop for days on end. Your options for customizing those mechs were also behind paywalls, as were any and all decals, emblems, and other color customizations. I counted the numbers, and if you wanted to unlock everythign, you had to have won 100 matches a day, for about 1 year straight. You can't just play the matches, you have to win them, otherwise you don't get a point bonus.
-not alot of variety in gameplay. You basically had multiplayer, and multiplayer versus bots. That was it. game modes were your standard fare, nothing special. Lack of user modding killed what could've been a potential goldmine.

i'm surprised I didn't already write a review for this game. I guess I forgot because this game was so forgettable. If you want to try it, it is free, but don't expect to come back for more.

As of november 2014, an actual dead game/abandonware/failed beta/whatever.

The devs are no longer associated with the project, and both they and their publisher no longer have any kind of web presence. There's no support whatsoever. If something breaks, new hacks appear, someone's griefing - anything - you're simply on your own. This sometimes leads to sad things like how it's no longer possible to recover your account if you lose or forget your password, and the old hawken forums getting closed down without a word. There's about 0% chance that the game will see any further patches, additions, or updates.

Hawken has a long history, but at this rate, not only will the game cease to exist, but all memories of it will be lost. For instance, did you know that at one point, the devs and the internet at large were convinced that hawken would rival League of Legends' playerbase? The game was so hyped, they were gonna do a TV series, a card game, a movie, comic books, toys, and a youtube exclusive show. Only the card game actually made it, and it's allegedly more balanced than hawken itself.

RIP, hawken, 2011-2015. Never left beta.

While you can still play this game, know that the servers could go offline at any time, and any money you put into the game won't actually change anything, feed any developers, or even lead to new content releases. Thus, for obvious reasons, it's not recommended that you purchase MC for any reason.

tl;dr hawken could have been great, but it's dead. Play while it's still up if you feel like it.

It is unfortunate that this game's community is dying. Since it has no single-player component, it means the game itself is dying. This game is a solid shooter that breaks from the modern military shooter convention in many ways, which I find enjoyable. A class-based shooter that brings the best of arena shooters coupled with some mechanics from mech games for flavor. One of my current favorite FPS games.
