Weekly Update - 2015-08-20

What happened this week:

1. Set up new gameservers hosts in Phoenix and Atlanta
  - After looking at more ping data, we're going to try some more data center options
  - These, along with Chicago, are looking pretty good so far, a tangible improvement
2. The new Storm hosts are performing well; login times are a little better
  - there are still reports of "very long sync" times, so submit a support ticket, especially if you'd be willing to run a wireshark profile while you log in and experience the problem
  - We set up some telemetry to better monitor how long the client waits to complete account syncing
  - The vast majority of clients experience relatively quick account syncing, so it's not a systemic, everyone-experiences-this issue
  - We think we can find more ways to improve the situation though
3. We got a new Storm environment set up that is already being used for new development work
  - Now it's much better documented :)
4. Double HC weekend starts today until Monday, Noon PDT.

What's up in the next week:
1. More staging environment work - gameservers will be required soon
2. We've got a bead on a possible lead Gameplay/Generalist programmer, so I'm excited, but availability may not be immediate
3. Sr. Technical Artist/programmer - still looking
4. UI Programmer or a gameplay person with UI experience
5. The Priority Target semi-finals are happening this Saturday
  - We want feedback on how you think we can better support tournaments like this
  - And, yes, we want to help your next tournament be a success
  - Submit a support ticket and we'll get things rolling

I'll try to post up some of that nifty ping data we've got going.  It's pretty interesting.

Bu Oyun Hakkında

HAWKEN is a multiplayer first person shooter for PC that places you inside a mechanized war machine on the battlefield of a dystopian world called Illal. With strategic, fast-paced gameplay, HAWKEN features incredible alien landscapes, customizable and upgradable mechs, and dynamic experiences across multiple competitive game modes.

HAWKEN features 6 game modes: Team Deathmatch, Co-Op Bot Destruction, Missile Assault, Siege, Deathmatch and Co-Op TDM. Each mode offers a unique gameplay experience that requires a different approach and hones a separate set of skills.

  • Team Deathmatch
Two teams of six group together and battle as a team in a race to 40 kills. Fighting as a group and knowing when to play defensively is essential to survival.

  • Co-Op Bot Destruction
Team up with three other pilots for 25 waves of increasingly intense encounters against computer controlled mechs and attack drones. Every fifth wave is led by one or more elite boss mechs that can’t be defeated alone. Move as a group, plan your attack, and spend your resources wisely to eek out a victory against all odds. Co-Op Bot Destruction is currently available on the Facility and Front Line maps, each featuring a unique set of enemies.

  • Missile Assault
Split your team of six into groups and compete over three missile silos spread across the map. Capture a silo and maintain control over it to launch missiles against the enemy team’s base ship. Control all three missile silos to do bonus damage and end the battle even sooner. Flexibility and effective use of items are the key to destroying the enemy base before they destroy yours.

  • Siege
Collect EU from two energy sources in neutral territory and return them to base to launch an attack ship at the enemy base. Fight for control over the Anti Aircraft battery in the center of the map to keep your ship from being shot down before it reaches and destroys the enemy base. There is no time limit in Siege, but every ship you launch is more powerful than the last.

  • Deathmatch
Watch your radar and be careful not to expose yourself until you have the advantage in an intense free-for-all battle. The player with the highest score after 10 minutes wins.

  • Co-Op TDM
Team up with 5 other pilots for online TDM against computer controlled mechs. If you want to jump into a match and have some fun without concerning yourself with human opponents, then this is the mode for you!

HAWKEN features a wide range of customization options that allow you to craft a unique look and equipment loadout that other players will remember.

  • Cosmetic
Strike fear in your enemies and confidence in your allies with unique trim colors & paint patterns, chassis parts, thrusters, and repair drones. Taunt defeated opponents and make your teammates laugh with comic mech emotes and deployable hologram generators. Make yourself at home in your mech by using cockpit decorations, custom HUD colors and different combinations of primary and secondary reticles!

  • Practical
Customize your play style and abilities with passive internals and deployable items. Internals take one to three of six available internal slots and range in effect from giving your mech a unique ability, such as dashing or doing a 180 spin in mid-air, to temporarily boosting damage or healing each time you gain a kill or assist. Items can serve as an additional weapon (e.g. EMPs, Grenades), a deployable piece of equipment that helps you and your teammates (e.g. Portable Scanner, Shield) or one that disrupts your enemies (e.g. Machine Gun or Rocket Turret, Radar Scrambler). Select a loadout that matches your play style to defeat your enemies quickly, support your team, or control tactically important areas of the map.

HAWKEN has numerous maps to explore. But you can’t always enjoy the scenery--or get your bearings--while boosting away from enemies. Our Map Guide includes interactive maps showing major points of interest for every game mode on every map, plus lore, screenshots, gameplay tips, and more.

Every mech starts with one primary weapon. You can purchase two additional primary weapons in the garage. You can purchase the alternate primary weapon at mech rank 3 and the prestige weapon at mech rank 5. You can swap your primary weapon in the Garage or in the Staging Area before a match or between respawns. Each mech only has one secondary weapon. They cannot be switched out for alternatives like primary weapons. However, all secondary weapons possess a special ability that provides additional functionality. Use the middle mouse button to activate that ability.

Hawken is one of the most engaging games I've ever played. Often I shy away from competitive shooters, but Hawken's community has a casual and welcoming atmosphere, even amongst advanced players.

Regarding community-
Typically, the people you meet won't take the game too seriously, and sometimes lobbies can fill up with players who love to chat about the game or organize fun, gimmick matches. Hackers are few and far between- The only hackers you'll come across are aimbotters, who can easily be killed with proper teamwork or clever use of cover and items. Basically, the Hawken community is great. Even on opposing teams, people won't get mad talking to you.
Matchmaking- I haven't found any difficulty finding matches in the US region during most waking hours and can still find a few games late at night. However, if your performance is incredibly high, finding a lobby that matches your skill level can be difficult, which leads to players creating new accounts to play with others of lower skill. However, said players have put thousands of hours into the game- if you want to play the game casually, matchmaking isn't an issue in the slightest.

Regarding price model-
Hawken has 2 types of currency. Hawken Credits can be earned through achievements, ranking up, and simply playing matches. Hawken credits can be used to buy unlocked primary weapons, new mechs, usable items (don't worry- they come back every time you respawn), and "internals" (essentially, passive effects for your mech).
The 2nd currency is Meteor Credits. These can only be earned through community events or bought with money. They can be used to provide a boost to your earned credits or experience. Additionally, Meteor credits can be used to purchase weapons (even if you haven't unlocked access to a weapon yet), mechs, and cosmetic items such as new taunts or paintjobs.
The rate that Hawken credits are earned isn't perfect- you'll be earning a lot more as you start before you stop receiving bonuses. However, there are semi-regular events which provide doubled HC earnings, and switching to a team with less players provides a nice bonus. In addition, daily win bonuses are available for each mode. I haven't spent a cent on the game as of yet, and in 30 hours of gameplay I've acquired 7 mechs and outfitted all of them with plenty of items, weapons and internals. The rate may be a little grindy- but each mech is unique and fun to play, and the game itself is an absolute blast. Earning HC actually feels like a reward rather than an obligation, and I haven't found myself bored with my selection of mechs before acquiring the funds for another as of yet.

The gameplay revolves heavily around teamwork and coordination, so you wont be seeing many players on Deathmatch.

Hawken's gameplay differs from many shooters- mechs have a limited turning speed, meaning it can be hard to keep your reticle on a quick mech that rushes you down. To circumvent this, you have the ability to dodge from side to side- this helps not only with dodging strong projectiles, but quickly adjusting your position to move your reticle onto an enemy. However, dodging has a short cooldown attached. Boosting (sprinting) everywhere is discouraged- this will drain your fuel meter until you can no longer boost, and disables you from firing weapons for a short duration after ending the boost. Mechs can also use their fuel meter to hover in the air- however, the height that can be achieved is limited, and your maneuverability in the air is greatly limited, making you an easy target for any player.
These mechanics seem to make it very easy to suppress targets, as anyone who attempts to rush in on a defended point has no way to fight back, and will likely die in seconds to a full team. However- you can instantly shoot out of a dodge, and one mech- the Raider, has the ability to shoot while boosting for a short duration, with the role of breaking up a defensive team and causing chaos while their teammates provide supporting fire and move in whilst the other team is distracted.

Alternately, there's another approach that I prefer greatly- stealth. Each mech is equipped with a radar. Everytime you fire a weapon, boost, dodge, or jump, you will appear on a nearby enemy's radar for a short duration, in addition to appearing on radar once in the enemy's line of sight. In most firefights that involve a large portion of the enemy team, the enemy will be completely focused in one direction, allowing a lone mech to walk around, undetected, and attack the enemy team from behind. Organized flanking can be devastating to an unsuspecting team- ESPECIALLY with the mechanic of repairing in mind.

What is repairing? Repairing is one of the main methods of restoring a mech's hp. Repairing puts you in a third person view with no radar, and will not begin restoring hp until a few seconds have passed. The mech cannot fire or move until a few seconds after repairing is stopped. If an enemy mech is hit while repairing, the process will be cancelled. If a repairing mech is caught off guard, they're most likely dead.

One of the greatest joys in Hawken is finding a player and organizing a flanking ambush on the enemy team- either verbally or nonverbally. Hawken's gameplay greatly encourages tactical play, and a team that sneaks up on enemies will likely prevail.

Another tactical aspect of Hawken lies within mech abilities- special augments for your mech that can be activated after a certain cooldown has passed. Almost every mech has a unique ability (only 3 mechs share an ability in the game) that can greatly change how a skirmish plays out. As mentioned earlier, the Raider mech has the ability to shoot while boosting, which can be used to chase down an opponent at high speeds, or to sacrifice yourself to give your team an opening to attack. Other notable examples include the Infiltrator, which can make itself nearly invisible and undetectable on radar until the mech attacks or runs out of fuel (which the ability constantly drains).

That about wraps it up- many other mechanics will explain themselves, or be found through experimentation. Don't be afraid to look up guides on mechs and maneuvers.

TL:DR
This game is an absolute blast if you get into it, and extremely easy to play completely free. There're plenty of handy techniques to learn, coordinating with teammates feels good, and duels with opponents can become very intense and action-packed. Every mech has a completely different playstyle, so if you ever find yourself bored, you can try out one of the free mechs, purchase a new one, or even just change the weapons and items you're using for a new experience.

My biggest hang-up with the game: development.
Adhesive games went under a while ago, and only recently was Hawken picked back up by a new company. While we receive updates every week, new content is still a ways away, and said lack of content has led to a small community. However, the game is still populated. I highly encourage you to give the game a go and maybe invite a few friends- after all, it's free.

Good fast paced FPS, might take some time to get used to movement system. It has oddly long time-to-kill, making team work an actual thing becouse you can easily get outnumbered if you don't stick with your buddies. I also like mech variety, you can buy yourself a mech that suits your game style. I might admit, game is a bit grindy, but not pay-to-win. There also are some free promo codes which can be applied for neat gifts and bonuses.
Go, check this game out, you won't loose anything becouse its free-to-play!

Fun gameplay, great machine and environment design (the machines in this looks like they could function in real life!) and less than stellar sound make for an interesting, fast paced experience. Not too many people play this as much anymore though, but a ftp worth cheking out.

Everything you wanted from MechWarrior but didn't get. The most immersive mech shooter out there. The mecha feel great, they have definite weight, but aren't clunky, the weapons sound and feel great to use, and the moving HUD truly makes you feel like you're inside the mech. It's free and incredibly fun. At least worth a look at if you like robots, guns, or shooters.
