Here's the latest HAWKEN Development Update from Producer Jason Hughes!

Hello Everyone!

So here I sit on a Saturday afternoon at home, putting the finishing touches on a Development Update since it wasn't something I was able to finish before I went home last night. Granted at about 8:30pm I went out for wings and beer with some team members but I decided at that point in the evening, I had put in a decent day and could finish up what was needed on Saturday. I know all of you would have loved to have something up yesterday instead but well... here we are today.

I tend to take time on such postings, going over them again and again because that's just how I function by default. This Development Update in particular has proven tricky for me and I have stared at a blinking cursor perhaps more than I have in the past. Why is that? I think it's pretty clear that expectations become increasingly higher as time passes regardless of what daily level of communication we have with everyone. People want the meat, the future, a glimpse into what's coming and not a lot of concrete details have been shared recently.

It's funny because as I type this I'm wondering how much will remain after ZC reads it and offers his feedback on what should be changed... There's a reason why people like me aren't community managers and why I have someone like ZC to protect me from myself.

Something that's happening with the project right now is a bit of incurred technical debt that continues to surface and impacts the goals of the company as a whole, not just HAWKEN. We have contracted an external strike team to resolve some of this technical debt and even for them, it takes time. I'll dive into a little more detail on what's going on with this in a below section but it won't change the fact that you, the dedicated players want to know what's coming up.

The forums these days are a rainbow of fruit flavors which include speculation, hunger, love, anger, frustration, apathy and passion. Some will be satisfied with this Development Update, some won't. I'll refrain from giving my prediction on what those percentages will be but regardless of your reaction, I want to make sure that something is clear.

HAWKEN represents years of dedication from some talented people and if you think anyone has stopped caring about what happens with the game, well... that's just crazy talk! It's a true passion for many of you and for those working on the project it means also our livelihood, careers and families. Now ultimately, all of that doesn't matter. It doesn't. If you come into our restaurant and an oil fire erupts in the kitchen, it has zero bearing on your desire as a customer to have a nice meal and share a romantic candlelit evening with your loved one. It's our responsibility to put the fire out and move forward with remodeling and sharing the wine list at the same time. Just because you smell smoke in the dining room though, that doesn't mean the kitchen doesn't know there's a fire.

Nobody has forgotten about the community either, but sometimes there just aren't new and exciting things to talk about. Add this to being constantly reminded of things we're also frustrated with, the more destructive tones that have surfaced recently and it becomes a less and less attractive place to spend your time. I mention this purely to remind everyone of the human aspect of our jobs, we are only human after all. You will see plenty of postings, but they aren't always obvious and sometimes get buried. I'll ask people here to make some more noise.

MIGRATION STATUS / STABILITY
As discussed in the last Development Update, we are in the process of migrating databases which includes new software and new hardware. This is still ongoing but has also continued to cause some hiccups in services recently. We had a failing on the new database hardware on Monday and that took HAWKEN down for a while as a more recent example. The further down the rabbit hole we go with this migration, the more issues that tend to surface. It impacts stability in live without question, sometimes taking the service down completely for small chunks of time. It goes without saying this isn't a desired result but the strike team is working on this every day. We have a room in our company wide IM service that's an ongoing conversation on the status of services, servers and automated alarms. I assure you it's a non-stop topic. We are however starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and we're really looking forward to that time!

HACKING
The forums are sometimes ablaze with the discussion of new potential hackers and we continue to take the matter seriously. We look into the reports generated for us, review reports by players and don’t rely on automatic banning. There are too many events that can cause false positives, so it’s something we look into on a case by case basis. We do not share the outcomes of any investigations and ask that you please continue to refrain from calling out specific targets in the forums. It’s done with good intentions to be sure but can also unintentionally backfire on us in our attempts to keep HAWKEN a game for fair players!

In the last month we've banned or suspended approximately 150 accounts and have banned IPs as needed too. We may not comment on every single report submitted but that doesn't mean we aren't investigating. It's an ongoing process and always will be, so if someone posts asking for a status, please feel free to point them to one of the posts where we've discussed the topic. It would be a big help!

TEST DRIVES
We are also aware of the strangeness that has taken place with Test Drives over the past couple of weeks. What's been happening is the rotation for the week is unknowingly being reverted to the previous week when certain platform changes are rolled out. It's not intended but rather a side effect of the migration work being done. Unfortunately there's no automatic way to be notified of this and we just have to wait until the migration process is complete but we'll keep our eyes open. Please don't hesitate to use the Test Drive thread for that particular week to let us know if something looks amiss.

NEXT
Outside of the above there isn't more information that can be shared at this time. We must take the coming weeks one step at a time while some of this necessary work is accomplished first. Anything else shared regarding ongoing development would be something I'd be discussing without a high level of confidence. I do wish I could open the floodgates and share some specific details, but I assure you it's not the right time yet, not even for a hint.

We will have another Development Update in a couple of weeks and will provide a status update on not only what was discussed above, but also the current state of actual HAWKEN development. I do really hope to have some great things to share because who doesn't like sharing positive news and updates?! Sharing little or neutral news is not why I wake up in the morning. The passion is always appreciated and means a lot, just please try to keep the conversations positive. We all care about HAWKEN but it's also a game and is out there for people to have fun with.

Me? I'm going to go and have dinner with my loved one over a take out pizza and hope I don't smell smoke coming from the kitchen...

With strategic, fast-paced gameplay, HAWKEN features incredible alien landscapes, customizable and upgradable mechs, and dynamic experiences across multiple competitive game modes.


HAWKEN features 6 game modes: Team Deathmatch, Co-Op Bot Destruction, Missile Assault, Siege, Deathmatch and Co-Op TDM. Each mode offers a unique gameplay experience that requires a different approach and hones a separate set of skills.

  • Team Deathmatch
    Two teams of six group together and battle as a team in a race to 40 kills. Fighting as a group and knowing when to play defensively is essential to survival.

  • Co-Op Bot Destruction
    Team up with three other pilots for 25 waves of increasingly intense encounters against computer controlled mechs and attack drones. Every fifth wave is led by one or more elite boss mechs that can’t be defeated alone. Move as a group, plan your attack, and spend your resources wisely to eek out a victory against all odds. Co-Op Bot Destruction is currently available on the Facility and Front Line maps, each featuring a unique set of enemies.

  • Missile Assault
    Split your team of six into groups and compete over three missile silos spread across the map. Capture a silo and maintain control over it to launch missiles against the enemy team’s base ship. Control all three missile silos to do bonus damage and end the battle even sooner. Flexibility and effective use of items are the key to destroying the enemy base before they destroy yours.

  • Siege
    Collect EU from two energy sources in neutral territory and return them to base to launch an attack ship at the enemy base. Fight for control over the Anti Aircraft battery in the center of the map to keep your ship from being shot down before it reaches and destroys the enemy base. There is no time limit in Siege, but every ship you launch is more powerful than the last.

  • Deathmatch
    Watch your radar and be careful not to expose yourself until you have the advantage in an intense free-for-all battle. The player with the highest score after 10 minutes wins.

  • Co-Op TDM
    Team up with 5 other pilots for online TDM against computer controlled mechs. If you want to jump into a match and have some fun without concerning yourself with human opponents, then this is the mode for you!


HAWKEN features a wide range of customization options that allow you to craft a unique look and equipment loadout that other players will remember.

  • Cosmetic
    Strike fear in your enemies and confidence in your allies with unique trim colors & paint patterns, chassis parts, thrusters, and repair drones. Taunt defeated opponents and make your teammates laugh with comic mech emotes and deployable hologram generators. Make yourself at home in your mech by using cockpit decorations, custom HUD colors and different combinations of primary and secondary reticles!

  • Practical
    Customize your play style and abilities with passive internals and deployable items. Internals take one to three of six available internal slots and range in effect from giving your mech a unique ability, such as dashing or doing a 180 spin in mid-air, to temporarily boosting damage or healing each time you gain a kill or assist. Items can serve as an additional weapon (e.g. EMPs, Grenades), a deployable piece of equipment that helps you and your teammates (e.g. Portable Scanner, Shield) or one that disrupts your enemies (e.g. Machine Gun or Rocket Turret, Radar Scrambler). Select a loadout that matches your play style to defeat your enemies quickly, support your team, or control tactically important areas of the map.

Every mech starts with one primary weapon. You can purchase two additional primary weapons in the garage. You can purchase the alternate primary weapon at mech rank 3 and the prestige weapon at mech rank 5. You can swap your primary weapon in the Garage or in the Staging Area before a match or between respawns. Each mech only has one secondary weapon. They cannot be switched out for alternatives like primary weapons. However, all secondary weapons possess a special ability that provides additional functionality. Use the middle mouse button to activate that ability.

这年头的机甲fps也出了不少,特别是网游方面,之前有一个CE3引擎的类似的网游,可惜折戟沉沙。
作为一名机甲游戏的爱好者,我当然也是对HAWKEN充满了期待。
就画面来说,对于处于beta之中的游戏,能够达到HAWKEN这样的水准应该是相当不错的了。无论是光影的渲染,还是细腻的建模和精美的贴图,都能很好的展现游戏的魅力。
不过也许是beta的缘故,游戏的音乐音效显得较为单调,特别是在战斗中。千篇一律的开火声音,乏味的背景音乐,很难调动起玩家的情绪。音效抓不住玩家的神经,经常打着打着就走了神。这一点希望能在以后的版本中得到提高。
另外谈一下游戏性,个人认为HAWKEN的操作在同类游戏中应该是比较顺手的。快速转身系统的设定也很新颖,能够让游戏多出更多的可操作性。各个机甲的设定也都各有特色,道具、武器和机甲本身的配合也较考验玩家的技术。不过可惜的是,游戏中似乎并没有配置近战武器,这多多少少有点令人失望,希望能在以后的版本中加入更多的武器系统。

说了这么多,最后说一下大家比较关心的就是这个游戏的坑钱程度。应该来说,游戏内置货币的基本上在游戏中没有一丁点的作用,除开几件基础道具和武器,几乎所有的武器、道具、部件甚至是机甲涂装都要花现金来购买。厂商需要赚钱我们玩家都理解,但是处于beta阶段就大张旗鼓的开始坑钱,这实在是令我不解甚至气愤。如果厂商再不对这样恶劣的收费方式进行调整,游戏的寿命不会长久。

很不错的机甲类动作游戏,丰富的机体配件和改造零件,改造自由度略高,游戏物价适中,只要肯认真完没有你买不起的。游戏的机甲等级与驾驶员等级系统分开,不管是机甲还是驾驶员,每升一级都有相应的奖励,让人充分享受到培养自己的机甲以及自己成长的乐趣。游戏节奏很快,基本上手就没有停下来过,特别是残血连杀时的快感让人欲罢不能,新手一开始可能会由于不熟悉游戏导致接连送人头,每台机甲都有自己的特色自己的打法,建议新手一开始找准自己的风格选一台自己感觉上手的慢慢熟悉,只要一上手你就能成为皇牌机师,切记队友是你坚实的后盾,多看雷达了解敌人和队友的分布寻找突破口,咱已经好久没玩到这么让人热血沸腾的机甲游戏了!
由于中国服务器代理的原因导致没有简体中文,但是港澳台地区没有代理制作组应该可以做繁体中文。
