Version 1.2 now available: Custom soundtracks!

Happy to announce that one of the game's most requested features has now been added: the ability to play your own music in-game along with the disco light visualizers.

Instead of manually-inputted beat mapping, the game runs a real-time audio analysis on the custom music and uses that to drive the lights. It's not quite as note-perfect as the manually-inputted data but still feels pretty responsive.

It should be easy to set up - go to Options / Audio and then paste in the path to a folder containing music files. Example:

C:\Users\Erik\Music\Dodge

Make sure you hit Enter after typing or pasting this in! Then select the 'folder' option button instead of 'soundtrack'. You can swap between custom folder soundtrack and the built-in game soundtrack at any time.

The one restriction - and it is a bummer - is that playback only supports .wav and .ogg files. This is based on a Unity restriction that I can't work around. .wav files are uncompressed and very large. .ogg are compressed but not super common, however I was able to use a tool like this one to convert and mp3 to an ogg: http://audio.online-convert.com/convert-to-ogg (be wary, that site has a few fake 'download' buttons that you should ignore).

This thread has some more discussion on the best ways to convert your files: http://steamcommunity.com/app/270450/discussions/0/617329505857631477/?tscn=1425419665

Enjoy!

Version 1.1 Now Available

This update is multiplayer-compatible with the previous version.

Update notes:

  • Can now view and change server from Create Match panel
  • Added Australia (Melbourne) server option
  • Version Number is now a button that takes you to release notes, highlighted if update occurred since last launch
  • Controls are calibrated at launch to prevent drift
  • Added global stat for Kudos Sent
  • Fixed performance issue related to Steam Stats
  • Added debug window to observe network health (F8)
  • Can now cancel if game is stuck connecting
  • Added exception catch on ascii parsing to avoid game launch crash with certain non-ascii symbols

The highest-priority fix in this build is the ability to see and change your current server when creating a match. It was clear from watching a few livestreams that it was confusing to not be aware of your server, which resulted in difficulties having your friends join.

I also had a few requests for an Australia server region, and since Photon added that kind of recently it was actually pretty easy to include it. The playerbase will likely be smaller, but connection will be way better for those players.

I also wanted to make sure when I updated the game in the future that players would be aware of what's new, even if they don't monitor these forums, so the main menu now has a button in the bottom right that highlights when a new version has been installed and takes you to the release notes website. (Note: it'll only highlight for updates after this one).

There are some other major features on the way, and I want to add a new game mode very soon, but I am trying to fit as many 'breaking' changes like that in a single update as not to disrupt the multiplayer community. So there should be some cool new stuff coming up shortly.

Om dette spillet

Disco Dodgeball is a ridiculously fun first-person sports shooter set in a dance club. All combat is one-hit-kill projectile warfare and your only ammo is the ball you are holding. Dodge, deflect and catch enemy fire, perform 360 no-scope stunt shots, and equip homing dodgeballs and jetpacks to dominate your opponents in a wide variety of multiplayer and singleplayer modes.

Please note: A frequent concern of new predominantly-multiplayer games is that they won't have a large enough community to support them long-term. I've built the game in particular ways to specifically address that: Matches are jump-in, jump-out so there's no waiting for opponents. You can create your own public room with the click of a button. There are three difficulties of AI bots to fill empty slots. Matches are fun whether you have 4 or 12 (the max) number of players in a room - you don't need 32 people in one room to have a meaningful match. All game modes work on all maps, and you can vote for your favorites or set it to shuffle. What all this means is you'll very likely be able to find or create the match you want. And this is of course in addition to the singleplayer modes that can give you dozens of hours of playtime even if you never want to play online.

Singleplayer Modes

  • Arcade It's you versus waves of randomized opponents & powered-up bosses. Take them out with trick shots and earn DodgeBux to spend on unlockable superpowered upgrades like EMP dodgeballs, higher jumps or score multipliers. As you play you'll discover powerful combinations of perks that even the odds in your favor. Every KO nets you a few seconds of slow-motion time to perform some insane mid-air helicopter catch and keep your combo streak alive. Includes a leaderboard for the highest-scoring players.
  • Juggernaut Tough day? This mode is the ultimate stress relief. You get two minutes of invincibility as you decimate a room full of dummy bots and rack up a high score. Practice your long-range shots, combos and multikills.
  • Air Raid You get an unlimited jetpack and must fly around and perform aerial stunt shots on the enemy team. They'll fight back - but you'll also have AI-controlled teammates that pass you dodgeballs from the ground, allowing you to perform high-scoring alley oops.
  • Fugitive Grab the golden ball and RUN! Survive for as long as possible against enemy bots that will hunt you down relentlessly. They throw unblockable fireballs, but you're given extra boosting and jumping power to perform evasive maneuvers.
  • Horde The rules are simple: You've got one life and must score as high as possible against increasingly difficult AI bots. This is the true test of a dodgeballer's skills.
  • Bot Match Allows you to create a solo match using any of the multiplayer settings and play against various difficulties of AI-controlled enemies and teammates.

Multiplayer Modes

  • Deathmatch Classic Deathmatch mode. Just get as many KOs and catches as you can.
  • Score Battle Each KO is worth different points depending on the difficulty of the trick shot (mid air, helicopter, ricochets, combos, dunks, etc.)
  • Elimination The original dodgeball mode. Get hit once and you're out for the round, but catching a ball will resurrect a teammate. Last team alive wins.
  • Hoops Grab the golden ball and toss it through the enemy goal ring to score a point. It's like basketball and rugby mashed together.
  • Super Ball It's basically keepaway: Grab the golden ball and survive as long as possible. The enemy team will coordinate to take you out, but you can also pass the ball to a teammate who is on the other side of the arena. Get one point for each second you hold the ball.
  • Capture The Cube Grab the enemy power cube from their base and bring it back to your own. You can take out approaching enemies by chucking the cube at them. A good strategy is to divide your team into attackers, defenders, and bodyguards.
  • Grand Prix A racing mode where you need to power slide and boost your way around a checkpoint course, all while dodging enemy fire.

Other Goodies

  • Free Online Multiplayer with one-click server setup and LAN support
  • Powerups like Jetpacks, Huge Dodgeballs, Laser balls, and homing dodgeballs. Pick them up randomly or enable as permanent arena modifiers
  • Team-based and free-for-all variants of most multiplayer modes.
  • Ten different dance club combat arenas that pulse to the beat of an amazing electronic music soundtrack
  • 60 Achievements to earn
  • Moustaches and sunglasses for your robot
  • Monster truck announcer to hype up your killstreaks
  • AlienFX-equipped computers will glow and pulse to match the arena lights

PHOTOSENSITIVITY WARNING: This game contains lots of flashing lights. You can enable photosensitive mode in options / video. This will disable lasers, bright explosions and other lights that pulse to the beat of the music.

Well here I am, my 80th birthday and my wife has seen fit in our budget for me to afford one of those nice new indie games on Steam. Well here I am on Steam and I come across a colorful lookin' game on sale. My eye doctor said that vivid colors would be good for my vision. So my wife said "what the heck is that?" and I said it's "dodgeball" and so she said alright.

I thought I'd ask the man that made the game his opinion on it and he seemed like a pretty nice guy.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/270450/discussions/0/617328415077052066/

Well mannered I thought, and seemed like the hard workin' type to have made this game on his own.

So I get the game and I start it up and my wife is over there knitting some mittens for the grandkids when this noise started banging out of the computer speakers. Startled us at first but then I thought it sounded kinda nice. I started movin' in places I haven't moved since my younger days and so I got up and got to moving. My wife said she was physically attracted to me for the first time in years.

Thank you Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball for saving my marriage.

10/10 would cut the rug again.

UPDATE: Okay kids, you wanted a more helpful review and now since grandpa has had some time with the game, I can give some insight about the actual thing!

1. It's great! It has helped my eyesight, just like the doctor ordered. The graphics are what you see and they look great.

2. There is a learning curve but it's very rewarding once you get good at it! For instance, if you're used to shooters, you might find yourself hitting the reload button from time to time in this game for no reason. You gotta pick up a ball to be armed kid!

3. HOOPS!!!! Best game mode ever, reminds me of my days playing along side the famous Bill Russell. Plenty of other game modes too if you want to try something else.

4. The single player arcade mode is a terrific place to practice. It's also pretty fun too.

5. It's just a really friendly community, what's the last game you played where people were saying "Wow! Great game guys!" or "Nice moves!" instead of "git gud" or "you suck!" Also, there's a neat kudos system in place where you can compliment opponents in real time with the press of a key! Nice!

6. Logging into the game at 3am (don't tell my wife!) and you'll still find people online playing, so for an online indie game, the community is thriving pretty well.

By the time that I had bought this game I had thouroughly given up on trying to tell my friends the game's name!

I've resorted to shoving the URL in their faces now, trying to show them how awesome it is (I'm thinking they'll join me once they realise they can put whiskers on a Robit). ;)

RRDDD is as much a capable competitive title as it's hilariously fun played casually with your friends.

With the extensive customization, great amounts of content and surpringly high skill-ceiling RRDDD is a game suitable for just about everyone whether you're looking for a fast paced arena shooter or robots with moustaches playing dodgeball.

This game has to be one of my best purchases. There is so much to do in this game with the multiple singleplayer and multiplayer gamemodes that you will never got bored. Every time I left the game I was itching to get back to it. The satisfaction of landing a trick shot on the oponnent just before they explode is such an amazing feeling.

If you're on the edge about getting this game, get it. You will get so many hours out of it.
You're welcome in advance.

10/10

I would recommend this Game to everyone.

It's fun, easy, has a good soundtrack (if you like Disco at least), and it includes many different gamemodes.
The Maps aren't to big, but different. Also the Gameplay never feels unfair.
The only bad point i can think of is that there aren't Official Servers, but to be fair: This Game has always about 50 Players online, why even make one?
Also, the Developer reacts fast to Questions (he helped me after about 10 Minutes) and seems like a cool guy.

So: Buy this Game!

I am sorry for the epic confusion, but my acount has been hacked for the WHOLE day. ALL messages you got that day are FAKE and NOT ME. yes, I did message you alot 1 day, but I stopped, and me and Hunterboy0303 just played together. I haven't messaged you AT ALL and honestly don't plan to unless I run into another problem. Please add me as a friend again, and who ever hacked me, I hate you. Thank you, and PLEASE understand. I am sorry that I got hacked and how it intefered with your game progress. EVERY message you have gotten today is not from me.

Does what it says on the label, and does it very well.

Upon reading the title, three things can be learnt about this game.

1) It has robots.
2) It involves disco.
3) It's about dodgeball.

And if there's anything this game is guilty of, living up to expectations is not one of them. Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball is a competitve primarily multiplayer first person shooter filling the fairly empty and unexplored niche of a dodgeball game, one I'm frankly suprised nobody thought of before.

GAMEPLAY
Gameplay is easy to learn; find a dodgeball, hold the mouse to shoot ("Oh, but what about controllers?" you may ask. Take a moment and reread my description of the game. This is not a game you should use a controller for.). Left click to drift, left shift to boost, collect powerups to get powers. Satisfying callouts from the game announcer sound when you hit a certain killstreak value or perform a certain type of kill, such as a 'dunk' or 'helicopter'. Simple enough, right? However, it holds true to the adage, as even with a considerable amount of time in Disco Dodgeball I'm far from mastering it. For instance, I largely ignored the drifting mechanic until recently, and found that it is extremely effective for sharp turns and desperate speed boosts.

CUSTOMIZATION
One of the reasons I left out 'team based' in my intial summary of Disco Dodgeball is due to the massive amount of game mode customization extant. Even putting 'primarily multiplayer' was risky, as the game has a horde and arcade mode, which have you pitted against endless waves of bots or battling through a more structured, level-based gauntlet, complete with purchasable augments. However, multiplayer is the star, and the gameplay settings make it shine. Several different game modes, including Hoops, which is similar to basketball, or Elimination, which channels Counter-Strike's 'one death and you're out' mantra are side by side with the standard deathmatch. Free For All modes are availible for most modes, and you even have the ability to choose starting powerups. Along with these are the standard goofy options like 'Big Head' mode, which speaks for itself, and low gravity.

SETTINGS
Disco-Dodgeball suprised me with how deep it's settings are at launch. If anyone reading this played the very early versions of the game, then you'll remember the unchangable 60 FOV, as well as only having the standard 'Good-Fantastic' Unity drop down bar within the launcher. Now you can change pretty much everything, including AA, Vsync, FOV, and Alien FX, which from what I've heard makes your AlienWare PC light up in sync with the game''s pulsating lights. Speaking of which...

AESTHETICS AND MUSIC
This is where I feel like the game defines itself in the gaming world, besides the unique concept. Launching the game, you're immediately hit with the game's energetic and pumed electronic music, as well as a display of it's neon glowing visuals. The enviroment interacts with the music, dimming when the volume or tempo drops and bursting with light when a piece hits it's apex. However, I imagine that the game could be problematic for those with certain medical issues due to the quick flashing lights.

PROBLEMS
The only real problem I have with the game is the occasional physics quirk. Sometimes you'll get shot up into the air after a collision with another player of object, which, coupled with the slow fall speed, makes you a sitting duck.

COMMUNITY
Not once have I heard an angry remark in the chat, even though I have been seething with frustration after getting Ninja'd by somebody for the 5th time. Disco Dodgeball has one of the nicest, healthiest communities I've ever encountered in a game, in part due to it's small player base, but also due to the built in kudos system, a way to quickly condone somebody if they've made a great hit on you.

SUMMARY
Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball is what it says on the tin: fast paced, energetic, and fun. You would be hard pressed to find a community that's nicer, and the innumerable game modes and customizations will have you playing until 1:30 AM on a school night, which has just happened to me.

This IS the best multiplayer game I have played in a very long time!
Trust me. Buy this game and enjoy the wubs, the balls, the colour, the base and the dodgeball!

So simple and yet SO fun! The game loads up in seconds and it so easy to get into.
I cannot see any cons to this game.

11/10 would ricochet again!

Fun game with fast paced instagib combat. Music is nice and the developer will be adding the ability to add your own music. Only downside is that the colors and lights can get a tad rediculous other than that pretty fun game. 8/10

Most fun and addictive game I've played in a long time. You might not see what's so great at first (though it seems most people do), but if you don't like the game by the time you're soaring through the air doing helicopter dunks, then I'll be impressed. Not a big FPS guy but so far I can't stop playing this one. Also, lights are synced with the music, it's a pretty thing. The dev seems like an awesome guy too, and more stuff will be added over time, so don't miss out!
