Update/Expansion 2.0 released

Hi everyone.

So, yes, I just pushed the 2.0 update to the main branch, which means that everyone should receive the update now.

First things first, it is quite possible that some people will experience bugs or problems, and for that I'm sorry in advance, the game got a lot of changes since that stable version so stuff can happen.

Thank you for all the pacience. I know this took more time than I originally said. The game was finished but after the Xbox One port got more content I felt like it should be here too. But as I mentioned before there were complications and well, I am working on this by myself and things take time (I know this is not your fault of course). Consider this update my humble offer for the supporters of the game, that have been there and helped shaping it to what it is today. I hope you have fun.


As a quick reference here's some of the new stuff, just the "headlines"

-Added whole new Dungeon "Rackan" (new floor sprites and enemies)
-New class (Necrodancer) yes, a homage (with permission) of Cadence from Crypt of the Necrodancer (go buy that game btw :)
-Added Custom game Mode, can choose amount of floors, floors size and difficulty
-A couple more achievements (taking into account the new content)
-Dead heroes can now return from the grave and attack you on a new Game
-New option (Graphics Options) to allow music to keep playing even on background, default is disabled. (should allow for better broadcasts)
-Last difficulty used is now saved for creating new game
-Added keys required for chests to minimap
-Procedural weapons no longer have more than 1 time the same stat
-Steal Ability doesn't steal everything in a slot 100% of the time anymore, now it' a chance of stealing x items from the slot
-Several dozens of other tweaks and improvements

PS: New mansion and character unlocks after you finish the game

Update 2.0 Release Candidate, builds for Window, Linux and Mac

Hi everyone,

So good news, I'm close to release the 2.0 update, it's time for a wide test, on all platforms, so I just made available builds for Windows, Mac and Linux.
The beta is still on the "beta_gamepad" branch, and you should be able to use a controller in any OS. I changed the game controller code to use SDL, in order to provide a better compatibility with game controllers on all 3 platforms. Personally I've tested with a Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS4 controller (Windows. For Mac and Linux I was able to get it working with a a wired 360.

Right now, when you enter the game, if a controller is connected, you are presented with a "Press A or Enter Key" if you press the A on the controller it will use the full gamepad mode, if a keyboard is pressed the current control scheme (kb + mouse) is used.

The idea is to have this on the beta branch until the end of the month, after that I'll move it to the main version, at which point more achievements will be available also. I intend to leave the old version in a separate branch so people who end up having problems (or prefer the old one) can continue having fun as usual.

By playing as either a Warrior, a Wizard, a Assassin or a Shaman you have to traverse dungeons, defeat enemies and loot everything you can in order to survive. You can learn new skills in Tomes you find along the way and buy/sell items at shops.
The entire game is procedural so you won't find items/enemies in the same place each time you play.

Great game, simple, fast and fun, the D&D simulator I always dreamed about as a kid!
Also great for speedrunning. Overall a proper game and its dirty cheap.

As a fairly big fan of Roguelikes and Roguelites, i really wanted to like this game. And when i started it, i did. It's repetitive, and the graphics are just generally unedited sprites from a Sprite Pack you can buy for use in your games, but it had a certain charm to it i suppose.

Ignoring the graphics because of the aforementioned reason, the sound design isn't great. The music is cute, but generic. The combat has almost no sounds to it, which is fine if that's what you're going for, but it doesn't seem like that's what they wanted. The sounds for eating and drinking (which you will be doing a LOT because of shoddy balance, more on that below) honestly sound like wet farts.

The controls are intutive enough i guess. Move around with WASD/Clicking with the Mouse and attack by clicking with the mouse. Oh and loot by clicking with the mouse. Starting to see a problem? This is most evident when playing as the Wizard/Assassin, characters designed more for a ranged approach. Nothing is more infuriating than trying to attack an enemy, only to misclick and just run right up next to them and stick your face out to get punched. Same problem with looting, half the time if you aren't paying perfect attention to where your mouse is, you'll run PAST your loot. While not as much of an issue in the early part of the game, in the later parts where enemies are EVERYWHERE, you'll often run straight into one due to this issue.

But honestly, as a fan of roguelikes, i could've overlooked that. The humor of the game is definitely what kept me somewhat charmed, with such items as "Bottled Water" (Generic Brand) and the Moldy Cheese item questioning why you even have it in your pocket. And if those were the only issues, i could've ignored them. Honestly though, the balance is definitely the main problem with the game.

I kinda glossed over the combat earlier for a reason. As i said, it's fairly repetitive. You click on enemies and hit them, you damage them, they damage you, etc. You have skills you can use, but it's effectively selecting the skill and then... clicking on enemies. Or yourself if it's a buff. As far as i can tell from my best run, there are no party members. Sidequests are practically nonexistant, generally they're just randomly generated fluff, either of the "go find this item that's randomly spawned in some room" or "kill this slightly recolored enemy that either you'll kill in two hits, or vice versa" variety. There's no visual indicator of progress, your sprite stays the same. But again; this isn't the biggest issue. That... is definitely the balance.

Yeah. The balance, of all things, in a rather boiled down roguelike, is ironically the main problem. You know how in most roguelikes your chance to dodge can be affected by equipment? Or rings? Or SOMETHING? Yeah, not so much here. In fact, i still have no idea what affects dodging in this as there is no weight system, and the only items i've ever seen have secondary effects are weapons which *NEVER* have +Dodge Chance or anything similar. This generally means that dodging for you is just a gift from RNGesus. For the enemies, it's a COMMON occurance. For cannon fodder enemies, that's fine. You know when it's not fine? With bosses. Bosses that can dodge all of your attacks and oneshot you at full health when you're already above the needed level for the floor you're on and can consistently oneshot the aforementioned fodder. The recolored enemies are guilty of the same issue. Equipment doesn't make a big difference really, as i said, only weapons ever seem to have extra effects, and they're generally worthless, so it's just a matter of seeing which item has a better main stat. Same with armor. Hell, even rings, generally the only thing in some roguelikes that have other effects, are just more Defense fodder in this.

Honestly, i'd like to recommend this game. I can see a mobile port working well (which they're working on a 3DS port so that's probably closer than i think) but in it's current state, on a platform with so many better Roguelikes, i can't recommend it.

Oh and for you achievement ♥♥♥♥♥s like myself, it commits a horrible, horrible sin; the difficulty achievements are difficulty locked. Beating the game on Hard for example, doesn't unlock the Normal and Easy achievements, just the Hard one. There's literally no reason for it, other than either the devs didn't think of it, or they were padding the game.

If you want a good example of a roguelike that's almost the complete opposite of this in every way, go play Elona. This probably seems like Needless shilling, but i'm serious. It's freeware, and has a large modding community.

Get good or you burn in hell. Just kidding. Maybe. Ok, so the difficulty spike in this game is insane but you can't farm so it's hard to gain money plus there's necrodancer so I give a 4.5 outta 5 because of difficulty.

There seems to be a lot of games that think themselves stylish and cool when they make a "Roguelike" game like this....im here to tell you its not fun or interesting. This game is as binary and dumbed down as a game can get as far as a dungeon crawler is concerned. To me it felt more like a game you'd buy on a phone not a Steam game.

You walk your character into enemies and either they kill you or you kill them....eat what little food you have and if you are unlucky enough to stumble onto a boss room you are pretty much dead no matter what. Theres no way to close a door or make a boss activate a trap and gain an advantage its either you are stocked up on large heals or you are dead.

When i think of Roguelike games i expect difficulty but i also want experience and skill to also play a part in how well i do. This game is almost entirely based on luck and nothing else and it irritates me that you just need to repetedly die until you get the right amount of luck for you to even have a chance of a "good run" to start.

I was looking for a deep fun RPG roguelike and what i got was a tablet game for kids.

I can't even explain why I like this game so much -- it's minimalist and repetitive, but for some reason i feel compelled to continue playing it. Totally worth it.

The interface doesn't work properly on a modern system (greater than last decades 1080p format). The old video/mouse draw issue that occurs when developers don't bother with fancy big budget stuff like "Testing" and "QA", whatever that is.

Technical problems hammer the nail into the coffin of a low effort, derivative RPG ripoff. It's got retro pixel graphics (art is hard, don't try! Mediocrity will still get sales!), 2D overhead gameplay (the 1980's called, want their video gaming technology back, etc).

Basically a typical low effort indy cash grab with no compelling gameplay draws. You'd be better off playing any one of the free MMOs on Steam (and save yourself a little cash, too!).

It's a fun Roguelike, but doesn't bring anything new to the table. It's been dumbed down a bit (no diagonal movement, no hunger management, no random unidentified scrolls/potions), but it's still a good game.

Fun game to mess around with, I picked it up on sale which I feel isnt worth the 5$ price tag. Randomized dungeon crawler pretty much, with random loot, not much to custimization. Some runs you can get great items/weapons, and some runs you get nothing. I will play this game from time to time as a mindless entertainment-laying in bed in my underwear drinking a warm coors light.

It is cheap. It is brainless entertainment, really good if you are ill, or tired or don't want to think too much.

It doesn't have lore, nor tactics, nor a story, nor does it look great, it is repetitive, but it is just plain simple hacking monsters and some bosses untill you reach the downmost level of the dungeon and slay the final boss.

It took me 4 hours (with two restarts as you die permanently) to play through chapter 1 (there seems to be another chapter), which is 1,25 euro per hour, about half a cup of cappucino. The dungeons are generated randomly, so if you are looking for a lot of careless entertainment, it should suffice.

Great if you lack energy, or lack time.

To be clear, there is only one dungeon and multiple quests, a more accurate title would be 'Dungeon of Quests'. That aside this little rogue style dungeon crawler gives you the option of player one of four characters to delve deep into a hostile environment filled with monsters but also loot!

The art holds the theme well but the lack of animations is a weakness for the overall product. Monsters are varied and the simple quests drive you to explore each floor thoroughly. Character advancement lacks depth with skills being acquired by loot drops instead of a leveling path.

It's simple, straightforward, and does exactly what it sets out to do. There are bigger more indepth games of this genre out there but the simplicity here actually makes this game fill a niche for when just a taste of a rogue like is all that's desired.

What are you looking for in the next game you play?

This game has that, and more.

Pros:
+Soundtrack, though small, isn't terrible.
+4 classes available, each with an identity
+challenging, rougue-lite gameplay at every level
+Active modding community?

Cons:
-Soundrtack is small.
-The game's enemies are your standard RPG stock, without innovation. (spiders, bats skeletons, etc.)
-No progression system, meaning every death results in a complete restart, with no rewards for progressing.
-No mods as of yet for other recent pixel art games such as shovel knight and towerfall ascention.
- No multiplayer, local or online.

Final Verdict:

6.6/10 The foundation of this indie game could be built upon to be something truely exceptional, but as of right now, they ran out of money or something, and it's a good game, but not a truely great one.

When i think of Roguelike games i expect difficulty but i also want experience and skill to also play a part in how well i do. This game is almost entirely based on luck and nothing else and it irritates me that you just need to repetedly die until you get the right amount of luck for you to even have a chance of a "good run" to start.

I was looking for a deep fun RPG roguelike and what i got was a tablet game for kids.

This game is essentially a remake of the 1991 Sega classic "Fatal Labyrinth", which is also available on Steam. Quest of Dungeons adds a few elements to the formula, some good and some bad, but doesn't really aspire to improve it so the few flaws that Fatal Labyrinth had are still here in Quest of Dungeons.

This game adds more loot and a store to sell and buy items. But most of the loot is just junk to sell anyway, and there is nothing worth buying except healing potions. Quest of Dungeons also tries to add personality to the player character and the monsters, but fails completely. The character says random things like "This game was made with C++" and "This game was made with OpenGL". The monsters say equally weird things, according to another reviewer they are mostly references to movies that have nothing to do with the context of this game.

Like in Fatal Labyrinth, the only way to heal between battles is to run around a bit. In this game the healing is a lot slower so the running around just to heal yourself gets even more tedious after a while.

I quit playing soon after I got to the 4th floor of the dungeon. There you encounter monsters who steal stuff from your inventory. This is another "feature" that was present in Fatal Labyrinth as well. But again, Quest of Dungeons makes an annoying feature worse. In Fatal Labyrinth the monster sometimes stole an item from you, in this game they almost always succesfully steal from you, so you see the few good items you didn't sell before going to the 4th floor disappear from your inventory at an extremely frustrating rate. And you can't get stolen items back from the monster after killing it. Within a few minutes I lost the three keys I had in my inventory (the most important items in Quest of Dungeons and not easy to find) and the better part of my gold. This is such a cheap mechanism to make a game more difficult (and Quest of Dungeons has a few of those) that it made me decide to quit playing.

Conclusion: the premise of the game is good but we saw that 25 years ago already in Fatal Labyrinth. And Fatal Labyrinth is still the better of the two games: it's longer, more balanced, less frustrating and annoying, it doesn't have the weird and even childish atmosphere and it has a "continue" system (if you play it via the emulator that comes with the Sega Megadrive Classics / Sega Genesis Classics collections, you can even save at any point). So I don't recommend this game but if you're looking to play a game just like it that doesn't have its flaws, I recommend Fatal Labyrinth instead.

To keep it short: Quest of Dungeons is not a good Roguelike and not even a good game. It has poor gameplay mechanics, a poor interface, and generally brings nothing new to the genre.
It might be acceptable if it was free since there are so many good free Roguelikes out there, like Nethack or Dungeon Crawl, and some that offer a rather different experience, like DoomRL.

I suppose if you want a simple dungeon crawler with the style of an old console game and not much semblance of depth, this would suffice. The developer seems to have hit their goal, it just turns out to be one I don't much care for. 16b aesthetic can't cover up the lack of interest.

i'll never finish it. miss-click an attack and you run in and die.

even on easy it's far too difficult to the point that i don't want to play. I have no patience to play it through.

感觉上这是一款比较舒适的小品级roguelike,虽然画面不大有特色,但BGM颇为动听,商店里的那首让我直接产生了找OST的冲动。
游戏模式和其他的地城roguelike大同小异,技能栏只有一格的设定让我有些捉摸不透作者的用心,既然可以在技能书里选为什么不弄多几个快捷栏呢。
可选择的职业数是中规中矩的四个(战士、法师、弓手、萨满),由于只玩过弓手就暂且不作评测。
就目前的体验而言游戏内容只有简单的刷刷刷卖卖卖,偶尔再做几个杀BOSS或找东西的任务,也算能基本满足消闲的需求了。
在中等难度下清了前两层成了土豪并各种物品溢出,面对着包里只能卖钱的各色石头和无法叠加的多种食物,我总感觉会出现锻造和烹饪系统,不知是玩得太浅没遇到还是尚未做进去,期待后续的更新能带来更多内容吧。
当初因为这个游戏而入了一整个慈善包,粗略玩耍过后也并未感到期待落空,如果你也是roguelike爱好者的话,在该游戏入包或是打折的情况下还是可以入来玩的。

这类游戏其实我挺喜欢的,买他的原因就是当《风来西林》的替代版,售价也不高,随机解谜型的地图,适中的难度,有空的时候玩一玩挺不错,比《风来西林》有意思的地方是还有多种职业可选,现在玩下来感觉法师比较强点,可惜不支持手柄,推荐购买~

价格公道
难度不高,有画面的roguelike游戏。
从四个职业中选择一个,通过7层地牢,解决最终BOSS,流程上基本一层一需要三十到四十分钟。我目前已经到最后一层了,金币和道具都比较充裕,希望能够击破最终BOSS

简单试玩了一下,暂时先通关了normal难度,问题很多。
首先是最基本的游戏性问题,这个游戏内所有角色和所有怪物移动速度完全一样,而且一切角色在出生时均没有任何控制技能,而新技能的获取也不是依靠升级,而是在游戏内随机获得在使用获得技能的魔法书,完全随机。
这使得大前期当你遇到打不过的BOSS时,你几乎没有任何办法摆脱那家伙,因为你们移动速度完全相同,你只能跟boss保持亲密的0距离一起一路狂奔,找到地图中随机生成的传送门,传送离开到同层别的位置回复,然后回来继续磨boss的血。
然而当你熟练的使用这一战术后,游戏内的所有BOSS又都变成了傻逼,因为传送门只有玩家能使用,怪是传不走的,而游戏内的生命值魔法值均可以通过回合的流逝自动回复,而boss不会,所以磨死一切boss不是梦,而这个战斗过程弱智无比又重复枯燥,你不会喜欢的。
而游戏进行了一小会之后,角色的数据会迅速膨胀,尤其是在钱的方面。游戏刚进入第三层,一瓶可以让我瞬间满血的药水只要450到900块钱,而我钱包里揣着5万块巨款,然而我惊讶的发现商店里出售的装备全都是比我身上差不少的垃圾装备,也就是说我的5W巨款除了买药水也不用干别的,而这个药水在你买干净以后还会刷新你怕不怕?喝药水没CD只消耗一回合你怕不怕?与钱包迅速爆炸相伴随的是,我的角色学会了一大堆一大堆一大堆技能,有用的没用的都不少,游戏难度随之骤降
前期过于困难,中期过后难度直线暴跌直接变割草无双的难度曲线肯定是有问题的

总之,这款游戏作为一个传统模式的RL系统过于简单,游戏深度过浅而且数值强度和难度曲线的设计明显存在问题。但是物品、技能等游戏内容还算比较丰富,作为一个廉价的拿来休闲打发时间还是可以的。然而作为一个“RL游戏”该作品并不合格。
如果不是买慈善包的时候顺便+个1的话,不推荐购入
