About This Software

MindTex is a lightweight normal map generation utility for game developers, modders, and 3d artists alike. Built to rival the competition without the steep price, whether you want to generate a normal, height, specular, self-illumination, or occlusion map, you can easily do it in seconds flat from a single source texture with MindTex.

Integrating MindTex into your 3d content pipeline will save you substantial amounts of time, money, and effort, allowing you to focus on what is really important: building immersive worlds and making your ideas a reality.

Key Features

MindTex takes a diffuse, normal, or height map as an input texture and generates a normal, height, specular, self illumination, and/or ambient occlusion map. A variety of settings are offered for each map type, allowing you to fine-tune the generated results.

MindTex also offers a 3d preview with a variety of options. You can tweak lighting parameters to simulate the environment in which your texture will be used, pick the model (standard or custom) that your texture will be applied to, change the UV tiling on said model, and pick which maps will display in the 3d view.

MindTex additionally includes a map export settings control panel which allows you to specify which maps will export when you click "Save All" as well as how the final maps will be generated. The map generation options are applied on a per-pixel basis, allowing you to quickly and easily do things like store a grayscale map in the alpha channel of an RGB map or bake ambient occlusion into the diffuse texture on export.

Last but not least, for those big projects, MindTex includes a batch processing-and-export feature. Accessible with a GUI through the tools menu as well as via command line, this feature makes generating normal maps for a large collection of textures simple and automatic.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows XP or higher
    • Graphics: GPU must support shader model 2.0 or higher; at least 256 mb VRAM
    • DirectX: Version 9.0c
    • Hard Drive: 5 MB available space
    • Additional Notes: Display must run at 1280x720 or higher resolution

Great and handy tool for generating realistic textures for 3D graphics. The interface is a little unusual in layout but you get used to it quick enough. Great price too compared to other products! You can quickly generate texture sets, or spend the time and fine tune them with all the expected options.

MindTex lets you quickly generate spec, occlusion, nmaps etc. for all your texturing works in your 3D projects.
Are you an indie or a pastime game dev? Then this soft is just for you.
If you know CrazyBump it's the same thing but a lot cheaper.

Edit: did I mention batch imports and processing?

Great Program! Can't go wrong buying this product. Creates nice bump, normal, specular, and ambient occlusion maps quick by just using the information from a diffuse map. It also allows you to customize each map to how you want it!

I bought this a while ago, and I took a very long time to even open it, let alone spend much time with it, but I wanted to just say that this tool is very nifty. It doesn't offer you much in terms of control over each element of the object, and it would be great if the tool provided a simple painting option to finely tune the resulting normal/specular/displacement maps. That said, it automates a lot of the process of creating a full game model asset, and any additional editing can be done after the initial generation using a separate image editing tool.

Pretty great software with a great price. Less complicated from other known texture map generators out there but still manages to create high quality maps. Any modellers, pros or noobs alike are recommended to use this.

13,99€ seem a little bit steep for a normal map generator, but I don't regret my purchase. The software does exactly what's on the box and the 3D view makes working with it fast and easy. I'm sure that many 3D game developers would find a use in this software and even 2D game developers might like to check it out, as normal mapping is just as possible in 2D games. I know that there are plenty of free alternatives, however none of those that I have seen offer the same amount of features, nor a 3D view, so I bought it quickly while it was 20% off.

Also, for those saying that it might be hard to use:
It's not. At least not if you know what a normal map is. :) I have never used a normal map generator before, yet I could get some satisfying results in no time. I'm sure I will use this software in at least one of my future projects, as normal maps really improve graphics for 3D and 2D games and such. I recommend MindTex to anybody who works with normal maps or plans to do so in future (like I do).

Short Question: Why should I buy this?
Short Answer: Because it does around 60% of what the equivalent professional software (nDo, Substance Designer, zBrush) does for $600-$700 dollars less.

Super Simple Tutorial:

1. Search 'brick wall' on google images, save the image of your liking (seamless textures are best) as a .png file on your desktop.

2. Open Mindtex, press the 'open diffuse' button and let the image load.

3. Play around with the sliders until you find something you like.

Seriously, it's that simple and I guarantee you'll get a texture about 10 times better looking than the original for almost no time at all. No, this is not zBrush or Substance Designer, but it's an amazing little program that does a fantastic job at quickly editing diffuse, height, normal, ect. maps for the indie game designer/hobbyist. Chances are you're probably not buying this if you're planning on going into the modeling/animation profession because you'll be busy learning the aforementioned high-end programs, but if you're working on low to mid-budget projects with a small group, or using it for your own film animation projects like I am, than this program is amazing because it gives you incredibly fast, easy, yet beautiful results for literally what it takes to buy two meals at McDonalds. Unless you've been modeling/animating for years, I strongly recommend this program because it is both a great introduction into the world of texturing and a cost-effective way of greatly increasing the value of your work.

In conclusion:

Make yourself a sandwich for a couple of nights instead of eating and out buy this.

As an hobbyist/indie artist of 19 years I would say this software is quite good ; most especially for the price. Similar software from other vendors usually costs $100 or more ; and offers similar options.

The video demo here does fairly poor service to its capabilities -- it actually gave me pause before buying it even at its cheap price. Thankfully the 20% sale convinced me to just try it anyways and I'm pleased with the results.

Pros:
- plenty of nice sliders to tweak your output
- maps that are generated are of decent quality; certainly much higher than the nvidia photoshop filter!!
- one of the best priced options out there even if its not on sale

Cons:
- its a 'low end' package so missing out in some advanced areas (you may not miss this depending on your expertise level)
- interface could use work ; it tries to jam a lot of things in to tabs, panels and buttons that change whats available and may be confusing to some

I was pleasantly surprised with this software. It helps with the creation of Normal, Displacement, Specular, Diffuse maps, and more. Way cheaper than other Normal Map generators, and it does quite a bit more. For those of you who cannot afford zBrush, this is a great starter for your maps. Even if you bring these maps into your sculpting programs, these will lay a good foundation for the form you would like.

It's extremely easy to learn. Generally graphics programs have a very steep learning curve, not this. MindTex is just awesome. Especially for its price.

A very nice piece of software. It does what it should, and the results are just staggering! Another pro is the price, extremely cost-worthy for regular people. To the cons; It has some bugs. Crashes, unexplainable error messages etc. These are very few and hasn't really been much of a trouble to me yet, but it still is rather annoying. The two other cons that is bugging me is the fact that the development of this product is pretty much dead at the moment of writing (hopefully that will change), and that there is no Linux support.

Mainly because of the price and resulting quality of this product, I rate it 4 out of 5 toasters. Continue development on this product, fix the bugs and perhaps implement a few new features, as well as give us linux support, and you'll get the last toaster.

I was having problems with the software. It woul freeze or shut off my video card and then say it was out memory (even though it was only using a gb or two of RAM and I had 5gb available) but it seems to work better now. It runs a little slow sometimes, but perhaps I overload it. It does what it says in the advertisements, save for like I said, a few hiccups from time to time. I think I also set it to run in Windows 7 or XP mode and I have not had the same problems. But all it all it has turned out to be a useful program. Maybe some updates will make it more solid.
