Update #30 - Invasion, Kickstarter! - Sept 23, 2015

Greeting Survivors!

Apparently, this last several weeks we'd been so busy preparing for our planned journey to Melbourne to attend games industry seminars and sorting out our booth and stuffs for PAX Australia. Nonetheless, we also still continue working on Survivors with more features and fixes.

As you all may have known, we are going to Kickstarter in October. If you are an Early Access backer we want to thank you and we are preparing an Early Backer exclusive reward.

First of all, let me elaborate more about the KS campaign. The goal of the KS campaign is to help us finish this game faster and add more content into the final game. If this KS is funded, everyone, including Early Access backers, will get the benefit.

Of course we don't forget about our Early Access backers (people who purchased the game before the KS campaign started). Because without your support we won't make it this far. So once the KS is funded, we will give all Early Access backers an exclusive reward. One thing for sure, the exclusive reward would be something digital so that we could distribute it easily and with no extra delivery costs. The reward would likely be either an extra copy (Steam Key) of the game, exclusive digital art book + behind the scenes dev stuff, soundtracks, an extra DLC, or all of the above. Some of the reward might be tied to one or two stretch goals in our KS campaign.

With that said, we do hope that you, our Early Access backers, would once again give support on the KS campaign. Your support can be as simple as telling your friends about our little indie game and the KS campaign.

We've also set up a reward tier that (hopefully) could cater to all, Early Access backers and new backers. For example: as an Early Access backer you already own the game so you might not want an extra copy, however you are interested in getting a T-shirt ($15 a piece). You can choose the $1 tier and add the T-Shirt as an ADD-ON to your reward with an extra $14. You'll get a survey where you will indicate what your extra $ credit should be used for. If you want to buy an extra copy then that's fine too :D

If the KS campaign gets funded more than the campaign goal, we might be able to add stretch goals. Some of the stretch goals that we have in mind are:

    - "Alien Colony" DLC - We are taking Infectonator : Survivors to LV426, Aliens style (Smart guns and Pulse rifles included). We might change some names and design to avoid copyright infringement. :P - Modding Tools - We might be able to provide you some extra tools to help mod the game. - Character Customization System - You can customize how the characters look in-game.

We've been considering this feature for some times, but now we are actually putting it into the game with some changes made to accommodate the mechanism.

There will be chance of swarm of zombies breaching your base and assaulting your people determined by the difficulty your base has. The higher the difficulty, the greater the chance and numbers of zombies you will encounter in your base. Characters who are assigned to any projects or works will automatically leave off the jobs and get under siege, when the attack occurs. All zombies will go straight to the center of the base and hunt you people down. Going Infectonator-style, you will oversee the defense activity until base is cleared from zombies. When your character dies, they can still be revived by clicking on them when dying timer is still ticking. Even if it's too late to revive, you can make them alive again using your money (@mmo).

Concerning this mechanism, we set the base to have increasing difficulty every 3 days, and so it will have random encounter when you approach, much the same as other buildings. You will also undergo defense and exploration before you can turn to map again and eventually enter HQ.

Our update doesn't stop there!
  • Balancing - We have balanced the gameplay with necessary changes.
  • Perks - Even now scientist has real, functioning perk.
  • Bug Fixing - Other more fixed minor bugs.

Update #29 - New Gameflow, PAX AUS! - Aug 25, 2015

Hi Survivors!

We are back with a new update! This time it's a MAJOR update! We have made a lot of improvements to the game. These new improvements include a new gameflow change.

Before this update, every time you move to a new building you have no choice but to enter combat mode. Not only that it was very tiring and time consuming, it made returning to the HQ a painful journey.

We listened to all your feedback and decided to change this flow. After a very risky surgical game code overhauling procedure, we have finally manage to change the gameflow and made it better.

Now, you no longer have to enter combat mode at every move. You can now move easily from one building to another with a chance of random combat encounter.

Zombie infestation levels in each building will effect the chance of encounter. For example, your chances of encountering combat is very low when going to a Police Station with "Harmless" infestation level. On the other hand, going to a "Dangerous" Apartment will certainly give you a combat encounter.

Another improvement that we made is to the game's story/events mechanics. There are now 3 types of story/events :

  • Random Events - These are events that will happen in the city view layer when you are moving from one building to another.
  • Interaction Events - These are events that are triggered when you interacted an object during exploration/combat mode.
  • Quest Events - These are events that triggers a quest with multiple story events and interactions. These quests can be triggered by a random event or an interaction event.
With this, we have started working on implementing story based quests.

We've also improved the user interface.

We replaced the Red-Green grids.

  • Game crashes when a rescued survivor died in combat - This is now fixed.
  • Minor bug fixes - Performance improvements & minor bug fixes.

It's been a very long journey developing Infectonator : Survivors. I started the initial game's design & prototype back in November 2012. Now, almost 3 years later we can all see that the game is shaping up and almost at the finish line.

We made it this far thanks to your support!

Even though we've managed to go this far, our limited resources did not allow us to go as fast as we hoped. Our small team of 4 have been working on this game on a shoestring budget for almost 3 years.

The game mechanics for Infectonator : Survivors is almost 100% complete. However, to truly make this game great we feel that it needs more content. Content such as : story, quests, cutscenes, characters, npc, voice acting, more enemies, giant monster bosses, etc.

This is why we are planning to do a Kickstarter campaign in October. With additional funding we would be able to hire extra help and finish the game faster (hopefully by Dec 2015 or Jan 2016) with more and better content. Not only that, Kickstarter can also help the game gain more exposure.

We are also planning additional exclusive rewards for you, our Early Access backers!

I've always wanted a game like this to be available on steam.

I know there may be other games like this, but for early access it's relatively bug free and fun.

I only have a couple issues with the game, and I'd just like to point them out here:

If you don't like doing the exact same "Hunt Zeds" objective after every location you explore, you might not want to play as of yet. It makes the game unnecessarily tedious and it makes me want to stop playing for a while.

Traveling back to base takes a long time (I'm not sure if it makes the game better or worse). To add to that, the same "Hunt Zeds" mini-game is necessary every time.

The game does feel a bit empty, but it's early access! It's expected.

But, don't let these minor issues I have with the game turn you away.

If you love RPG kind of games where you manage and command of up to four active characters and others waiting at base, this is a game for you! The way you upgrade your character both in arsenal and in ability reminds me of when I used to play with Lego mini-figures and gave them whatever new accessories in the unsorted bins. Sometimes it takes a while, but it's so satisfying giving your character new weapons and equipment.

And you can't sit idle and let your team do nothing either. Every day your survivors consume supplies, and if you run out, your characters die. That's it! They are permanently dead. That brings me to one last thing that I don't like. I think that the perma-death feature should be optional, but you wouldn't get as good of an ending or something like that.

All in all I give this game a 6.5 or a 7. The game does get boring and repetitive at times, but it's one of those games you can come back to a bit later and thoroughly enjoy again.

Gonna keep it short and sweet.
-Easy to use HUD
-Great Game mechanics
-Even Better Gameplay
-A Variety of Decisions to make
-Various "Back-door" Schemes to get what you need!
-Randomized "dungeon-ish" if you may
-A save feature

-EXTREMELY tough area's for some beginners
-Rare Occurences
-Various Glitches and Bugs concerning movement and Scavenging

This is what i've dreamed about in the infectionator series. I always thought to myself "...What happens to the people I don't infect, but still beat the city/town/urban-area?" Well, this is the answer. The fact that you control from 1 up to 4 survivors to try and protect them as if you were their "Guardian Angel" and lead them into the dangers of the infected populi is one of the best things Toge could've done. This completely flips the tables from the Virus Spreader, To the Virus Survivors. The wide variety of weapons and gear avaliable was intense, but the tricky part was finding them. I couldent help but laugh as i found a lightsaber in a cardboard box in a mall. The controls and movement can get tricky or glitchy (when trying to scavenge "Sparkley" objects it would close out of the decision boxes, and the character) but it is fun. The permadeath was a nice feature so the pressure was on. A little Glitch i couldent help but take into my own hands in the alpha version was before i died to exit out the browser, but they fixed that, by making the full version on steam. For anyone who played the infectionator series i recommend this to you.

Infectonator : Survivors , Small Review by Santo98

I would just like to start with this game being within Alpha and I can not go full blown with this.

- The Music gets you pump'd
- The Scavange System is nice
- Movement system is nice, you can either click and drag or just click
- For being in Alpha, there is a nice amount of weapons.

- After Completing a Mission, you are only greeted by a sentence saying you've made it, at least something visual
- The price of healing, I think it could be lowered to atleast 30 or 35 coins, 50 coins is quite a lot
- Your ability to reload, automatic reloading between waves would be nice

Overall though, I'm enjoying this game so far and hope the best for it and all of it's future updates, being a fan of the series.

Pretty fun little game. For an early access game, it's pretty enjoyable. Very difficult at times. If you expect it to be like Toge's
flash project "Infectonator", you'll be dissapointed. It has the same art style, but this game is much more than what the original flash game was. There's still some room for work here, but like I said.. Early access, so it has time to become something huge.

This game is a tad bit fun. It might even be worth your hard earned monies. But not at the price of 12.99. This is a 2 to 3 dollar game at best. I can easily, off the top of my head, list games that are in the same genre and beat this game hands down: Project Zomboid, Fort Zombie (even with all the bugginess), and rogue survivor. What I expected, from the description of this game, was Fort Zombie+UFO: Afterlight-lots of things due to it being alpha. What I got instead was essentially a more spiffy web browser game (even the graphics reinforce this notion of the game).

+Solid semi-fun mechanics

-No challenge (you don't even need turrets half the time and you would be hard pressed to lose any survivors)
-Limited tech tree
-Oversimplified mechanics (for a zombie game that's 12.99)
-Unintriquing story
-Pretty much no content that justifies the current price even for an alpha

This may all change as the devs continue to release material for the game. However, until they do I highly recommend those of you looking for a rogue zombie game to check out Project Zomboid, Rogue Survivor, and even Fort Zombie if you are considering this game. If you haven't played Rogue Survivor it is FREE to download and play, and it offers a good challenge for those who like games in the rogue genre. On the other hand, if you want a good rogue-like game that combines RPG, strategy, and tower defense there is also Dungeon of the Endless which is absolutely fantastic (and very challenging).

More in-depth analysis:

I recently replayed this game. While the tone is much more apocalyptic many of the issues I had with the game haven't been addressed. Primarily, the issue of getting me hooked and wanting to continue to play the d*** thing. I'll divide this up into several sub-sections.

1. Failures on the zombie survival game level.

Again, if you're looking for something to fill the void of being eatten alive by the undead (wait, what?) there are plenty of other titles out there. This game fails on this premise simply because supplies are too plentiful. It is too easy to acquire absolutely everything that you need to survive. Most zombie survival (and rogue-likes) turn every move into a time vs ammo vs hunger sort of mechanic. IE, if I engage that horde of zombies how much ammo do I waste to get the supplies they're guarding? That simply isn't the case here. The issue becomes simply one of finding enough food and resources, which are too plentiful. But that's partially due to design. Because you *have* to clear each level there is no room to design the levels around players making strategic decisions (rather than just tactical ones).

2. Failures on the level of tower defense.

The towers/turrets are still just over-simplified fluff. I didn't get to (and I didn't want to either) play long enough to see if we see towers/turrets evolve. Are they even really necessary? Well, they could help someone who doesn't know how to manuever characters in the middle of combat. I could see that, but I still don't feel that we need them. At this point in time they're just feature creep.

3. Semi-successful on the management side:

With getting rid of the rest period between fights we actually do see a useful element of management occuring, however this is undermined by the fact that the game is still way too easy. In a 1-2 hour play through I ended up with enough characters to both send out into the field and to research/build stuff (and I choose a 2 character start). If the devs manage to make the game challenging the current management part of the game might become more important and less feature creep.

4. Still just a way too easy RPG tactical:

We still don't see the game improving to the point of really having much promise. It is mildly fun for a 1-3 hour play through (though boring to come back to). While the devs talk about a lot of exciting improvements none of the changes they're proposing will actually fix the main issue with the game: Making people want to (continue to) play it.

I think what has to absolutely be addressed is either developing a decent story to make us want to play through the cities or to ratchet up the challenge (preferably both). The later of which doesn't necessarily have to come from overhauling combat, just rebalancing how players get resources. Specifically, redoing drops from zombies and forcing most of our resource gathering to be from scavenging the mission sites. This might make both turrets (as a way to deal with really difficult waves) and management (as a way to balance injured personel) more important and less feature creep-ish.
