About This Game

In the old days man tried to catch a glimpse of the future in the strangest of ways.

Strange, creppy and sad. Year Walk is game with an interesting atmosphere for people who like strange, creppy and sad atmosphere. Gameplay? Puzzles are very difficult.

An excellent dedication to its aesthetic. It provides horror not by jumpscares or the insistance of death around every corner, but instead through a slow subtle dread that lingers as you play. Oh, and don't forget to open the box.

Describing this game as "atmospheric" is an understatement. I love the attention to detail - the soft crunch of snow with each step you take and the complete isolation of the wintery woods. The blending of mythos and mystery is carefully considered. It's a shorter game, but I didn't find it lacking or feel like the price was unreasonable. It's as much of an artful experience as it is a game.

Well, I have to admit that the game is much better than what I expected, at the beginning I didnt like the gameplay, but while you get involved in the plot and the hard puzzles, it becomes pretty inmersive. The way it ended was very good and sometimes it gets a little creepy; The artwork and the soundtrack are pretty good too, in short, an excellent game.

I love this game. I'm a huge fan of mythology and other such stuff like this so it was right up my ally. This creepiness, for me, did not come from any of the characters, but from the ambiance of the forest. It's such a beautifully creepy place that you can't help but get sucked into it. 10/10 Would Year Walk again

I have no idea how this game landed in my inventory, I have no idea why I decided to play it, but having just finished my first Year Walk, I wanted to make a review.
Did I enjoy it? Yeah!
Have I finished a year without an achievement? Hell yeah.
Will I go for another year? Yeah... I guess..
Was it scary? No. Atmospheric, yeah.
Would I reccomend it? Yeah.
Should I stop saying "yeah"? Yeee ha!

Very engaging, albeit short experience.

Year Walk is not really a horror game, despite the tags, although the ambience is creepy and there are a few scares, it's not too vicious. It's more of a puzzle game, with a very interesting story, which is only mostly revealed at the end of the game. Even then, it leaves room for interpretation.

The puzzles are fun, they never left me thinking "that was stupidly illogical", nor "that was stupidly easy", like many puzzle games do, on occasion. And they manage to do this while being to some degree abstract, with few hints, which is admirable.

The graphics are fantastic, in my opinion: beautiful art style, clean, and clear.

Sound design is good, one puzzle relies entirely on sound, and is challenging but fair, so no complaints in this department.

Story, like I said, I enjoyed it very much, open to interpretation, yet I wasn't left feeling cheated out of a satisfying end.

The game also includes nordic folklore, which I found very interesting.

The game is quite short, so you may want to pick it up on sale if you are averse to games with few hours in them.

All in all, Year Walk is, in my opinion, a great game, deserving of the (currently) 87 metacritic score, as well as the 90%+ positive reviews.

I just finished my very first Year Walk and it was absolutely fantastic.

Concept: A year walk was a Swedish ritual that, if completed, could tell the future. You decide to embark on a year walk.
Replay Worthy?: Absolutely; in fact, replaying the game is pretty much required. Your first year walk's end is NOT the end of the game.
Horror Factor: In my first walk there was only one jump scare. The horror comes from the lore surrounding the creatures and the stark, eerie beauty of the woods you're in.
Music: Beautiful soundtrack that was haunting and fit well with the story.
Characters: There aren't many but the characters that did appear were fantastic.
Art: It was oddly beautiful and fit well with the story.
Puzzles: Difficult to say the least, but they were fun.

Only thing I didn't like was how short my first walk was; I was expecting it to be ~4-6 hours.

All in all, wonderful game. I might update this review when after I've replayed it a few times but so far I'm giving it a 96/100.

I played this game on my friends iPad and then bought it on steam because it looked interesting. I beat it twice and have gotten into the lore quite a bit. But on New Year's Eve of 2015 (this is a true story btw) I had a dream about this game in the perspective of the character you play as, but when I woke up it was still dark, I couldn't move (sleep paralasis) and I was hallucinating what looked like theoutline of the grim. Was absolutely terrifying but then everything went back to normal in what seemed like 30 minutes. Overall, great game 10/10 IGN would hallucinate again.

A bit creepy, but I wouldn't say very scary. Really fun but I haven't beaten it yet. But so far I would surely recommend!

Neat aesthetic and fresh gameplay, although at its core it is an adventure game. The atmosphere was also very well crafted, as were the puzzles. It would probably be best to play this in a single sitting with enough time to take in all the game has to offer.

I assume I got this in some bundle, so for me the value was excellent. The asking price is also very reasonable.

Never going to attempt to Year Walk in real life...

I got this game as a gift, yet I have to say it's worth every damn penny..!
Usually I'm the type of guy, that stays far, far away from everything belonging to the "horror" genre.
Heck, even "Alan Wake" scared the sh*t out of me..(Dat Atmosphere, bruh).

Year Walk?! That's another story, a great one to be exact. Suspenseful, hella scary at times and yet it leaves you longing for more. You just have to find out how the story goes.
I caught myself writing notes, covering my eyes, cursing, growing an extra pair of balls and loving this game..

Swedish folklore combined with beautiful and fitting graphics, wonderfully eerie music and just the right amount of horror and puzzles.

To wrap things up: Get this masterpiece!! "31/12" - would buy/play/recommend again

This game is a lovely point-and-click puzzle horror game. For $5 it's more than worth it, and playing it again was very nostalgic. The developers went for a choice that favors symbolism over action, so if that isn't your thing, don't pick this up. It's very artsy, and there are a bunch of secrets hidden after you beat it for the first time, so it has a decent amount of replay value.

10/10 Flawless

REVIEW
Year Walk is one of those abstract games that more closely resembles a piece of art than a video game. The gameplay is extremely minimal, while the true soul of the game lies in its ambiance, art direction, and core concept. This is the type of game which won’t appeal to everyone. For those who appreciate the occasional artsy game with minimal gameplay, then you will probably find Year Walk interesting, relaxing, and enjoyable. If you are looking to play a traditional video game, you shouldn’t be looking here.

The gameplay is roughly 3 parts “walking-simulator” and 1 part puzzle game. Navigating the area is your primary “challenge,” with the addition of a few puzzles you will have to solve. The answers to these puzzles can be a bit obscure, but there is a competent hint system if you want to avoid being stuck for too long and just want to enjoy the zen of the game.

The core concept of the game is also quite interesting. Year Walk is based on the Swedish folklore of Årsgång, which I had never heard of before playing this, and which I found to be interesting. After learning a bit about it, I was able to see that the developers did an outstanding job bringing the idea to life in video game form, even despite its inherently simplistic design.

The art direction, soundscape, and overall ambiance of the game make for a mysterious atmosphere which is very well aligned with the core concept. Admittedly, the graphics are quite simple; but the simple graphics fit the simple game.

Short, interesting, and atmospheric: Year Walk makes for a fun little experience that is well-produced and should be easily enjoyed by anyone who truly appreciates the genre.

Year Walk is one of those rare bits of media that lingers in your mind long after you've finished it. It makes you feel like a part of you is missing after you've finished it and, like a junkie, you become desperate for more. Don't let the "ending" fool you. There's more. Find the Journal. Open the box. It's not too late.

You know what to do.

It's been months since I first played Year Walk on iOS and I still think about it regularly. The Steam version of this game is as beautifully made as the original, and the changed puzzles feel at home on the PC. The atmosphere is greatly enhanced in this version of the game, providing a creepier mood than the iOS version - so much so that surprises I knew were coming still got jolts out of me. The story behind this game is so intriguing and mysterious that I wish there was more information about it online; Year Walk is an amazing introduction into Scandinavian folklore that everyone should play.
