About This Game

In the old days man tried to catch a glimpse of the future in the strangest of ways.

Experience the ancient Swedish phenomena of year walking through a different kind of first person adventure that blurs the line between two and three dimensions, as well as reality and the supernatural.

Venture out into the dark woods where strange creatures roam, on a vision quest set in 19th century Sweden. Solve and decipher cryptic puzzles, listen for clues, and learn about mysterious folklore creatures in the built-in encyclopedia as you seek to foresee your future and find out if your loved one will ever love you back.

Mysteries and clues await everywhere in Year Walk, but to fully understand the events that took place on that cold New Year's Eve, you will have to delve deeper than the adventure and lose yourself between fact and fiction.

• New locations within the game
• Map
• Updated art
• New puzzles
• Integrated Encyclopedia about the mysterious myths and creatures encountered in the game

REVIEW
Year Walk is one of those abstract games that more closely resembles a piece of art than a video game. The gameplay is extremely minimal, while the true soul of the game lies in its ambiance, art direction, and core concept. This is the type of game which won’t appeal to everyone. For those who appreciate the occasional artsy game with minimal gameplay, then you will probably find Year Walk interesting, relaxing, and enjoyable. If you are looking to play a traditional video game, you shouldn’t be looking here.

The gameplay is roughly 3 parts “walking-simulator” and 1 part puzzle game. Navigating the area is your primary “challenge,” with the addition of a few puzzles you will have to solve. The answers to these puzzles can be a bit obscure, but there is a competent hint system if you want to avoid being stuck for too long and just want to enjoy the zen of the game.

The core concept of the game is also quite interesting. Year Walk is based on the Swedish folklore of Årsgång, which I had never heard of before playing this, and which I found to be interesting. After learning a bit about it, I was able to see that the developers did an outstanding job bringing the idea to life in video game form, even despite its inherently simplistic design.

The art direction, soundscape, and overall ambiance of the game make for a mysterious atmosphere which is very well aligned with the core concept. Admittedly, the graphics are quite simple; but the simple graphics fit the simple game.

Short, interesting, and atmospheric: Year Walk makes for a fun little experience that is well-produced and should be easily enjoyed by anyone who truly appreciates the genre.

A short game with little extras like 2nd ending and some secres/ easter eggs for achievement players. The game is unique and strange but it makes fun so give it a chance even if its a very short game you can beat it in a bit more then 15 min but its a experience maybe for some so maybe you want to support this game with a few money. I give this game hardly 84 % if it would be longer i would give more points but this style and weirdness is so crazy. Thanks for reading.

This game manages to take mythology, folklore and tales from Sweden's past and weave them into a pilgrimage of sorts with an interesting narrative with nothing more than simple puzzle mechanics. It's a lot more fun than many other games of similar ilk and it's clearly down to a lot of care and attention during development as well as a knowledge and emphasis of the lore. I found it short, quite different and refreshing and interesting to play through.

Highlights

The things that carry Year Walk are most definitely the simple ambient design and the weaving of the story and lore into the world while staying true to the subject matter. It's carefully and smartly done and often feels as though you're part of a fairy tale or dark bedtime story as much as a video game.

Mistakes and Annoyances

Being a port of a mobile game, it suffers from a lack of depth from the gameplay, and while the hands off approach definitely works well with the narrative and story, it's still an issue when compared against other longer, deeper titles at the same price. Having said that though, I feel like had the game been any longer it may've run the risk of adding less enjoyable puzzles for the sake of length rather than story and ultimately, while short and simple, everything is fun to experience and discover.

Recommendations

Priced at $5.99/£4.79/4.99€ on the Steam Store at the time of review, Year Walk isn't expensive and probably isn't overpriced, but there may be better alternatives around the same price range on Steam and mobile. Due to the interesting world, atmosphere and content though, and the simple enjoyable play-through, there's no reason to avoid Year Walk and it's worth a play for anyone looking to waste an hour or so.

* Note: Purely by coincidence I seem to have played Year Walk at the perfect time and picked up a free achievement for my luck. Happy New Year everyone!
* Simogo, the developers of Year Walk, have a fantastic website full of Apps, Music, Art and other interactive projects. Their blog and work portfolio in particular are very worth a look.

Unedited review notes 31/12/2015 for Year Walk

+Style and scares work well with the mythology and lore, even if I'm ♥♥♥♥-scared of jumpscares
+Nicely thought out puzzles with plenty of clues
+Good staggered hints system
-Puzzles are often too easy to misinterpret or hard to spot in the world
-Puzzles often require backtracking
