Steam Big Picture

Bu Oyun Hakkında

Braid is a puzzle-platformer, drawn in a painterly style, where you can manipulate the flow of time in strange and unusual ways. From a house in the city, journey to a series of worlds and solve puzzles to rescue an abducted princess. In each world, you have a different power to affect the way time behaves, and it is time's strangeness that creates the puzzles. The time behaviors include: the ability to rewind, objects that are immune to being rewound, time that is tied to space, parallel realities, time dilation, and perhaps more.
Braid treats your time and attention as precious; there is no filler in this game. Every puzzle shows you something new and interesting about the game world.
Key features:
  • Newly added Steam Cloud support
Save your in-progress game to the cloud, then play where you left off from on any Steam connected computer.
  • Forgiving yet challenging gameplay:
Braid is a 2-D platform game where you can never die and never lose. Despite this, Braid is challenging — but the challenge is about solving puzzles, rather than forcing you to replay tricky jumps.
  • Rich puzzle environment:
Travel through a series of worlds searching for puzzle pieces, then solving puzzles by manipulating time: rewinding, creating parallel universes, setting up pockets of dilated time. The gameplay feels fresh and new; the puzzles are meant to inspire new ways of thinking.
  • Aesthetic design:
A painterly art style and lush, organic soundtrack complement the unique gameplay.
  • Nonlinear story:
A nonlinear fiction links the various worlds and provides real-world metaphors for your time manipulations; in turn, your time manipulations are projections of the real-world themes into playful "what-if" universes where consequences can be explored.
  • Nonlinear gameplay:
The game doesn't force you to solve puzzles in order to proceed. If you can't figure something out, just play onward and return to that puzzle later.

A great many people were enamored by Braid but personally it never struck a chord with me. I used to be an avid player of games on Newgrounds and I've seen all the mechanics in Braid on display and more refined in flash games of years passed. Its not that Braid is a bad game, I just don't feel that it brought enough to the table for me.

What makes Braid great is that it's different from every other platformer I've played. The game mechanics are fresh, and the art style is awesome.
An underrated aspect of the game is the music, which made playing it over and over again to try and unlock the speedrun achievement (and missing it be 30 seconds) more bearable.

Neat, original concept. It got boring pretty fast for me, though. If you really like puzzle platforming games, you should pick this one up, though.

This review's been a long time coming for me. Braid has quickly become and indie and art game must-play for anyone with even a shred of dignity in the gaming critique community, so I suppose its fair for me to give my analysis on it.

Braid has you playing as Tim, who has the strange ability to control time and use it to his advantage, but defeating enemies and gathering puzzle pieces to eventually find his princess.

Right off the bat, I could tell that Jonathan Blow was taking a few cues from Mario. You've got a simple man trying to save a princess from an evil villain, with innocent enemies that have large eyes and feet, along with ravenous plant monsters that live in pipes, and at the end of each level, a dinosaur tells you that the princess is in another castle. Sometimes to comedic effect, which is far more than I can say for Mario.

What makes Braid different, though, is that you can never die in it. Ever. Yeah, you heard me. There's no bullsh** life-system or power-ups. Just you and the various time mechanics you have to use at your disposal.

Along with that is the amazing art of Braid. It definitely shows that Blow put a ton of care into the backgrounds, enemy designs and animation all-around, because this is a beautiful game. The accompanying music (while often distorted from your time manipulation) is also very beautiful to listen to.

And now, here comes the sh**storm, as I feebly try to explain the story of Braid, and my interpretation of the overall point.

Braid, to me, is a story about the line between fantasy and reality, and how often we tend to see ourselves as the heroes in our worlds, but from a more objective stance... we might be doing more harm than any good. The difference between the reality of Tim and his fantasies are separated between the text crawl before levels, and the actual adventuring of the levels themselves. A constant shift between brief glimpses of Tim's life, as he continually searches for his perfect princess, even to the point where one of the dinosaurs asks if she even exists. And, in my opinion, I believe she doesn't. Much like the world that seems to be representative of the invisible "player"s mind, the princess is merely a fabrication.

By the end, even the game seems to accept its own reality. Tim hasn't done a good job of fixing anything in the world. Just killing the livestock and altering what he wants to his own means. By all rights, he should be a villain for his greedy attitude, and the incredibly ending suits it very well. It's a strong point on how much the player has between the character and even to a further stretch... the invisible hand of Blow himself, the architect of the world and story of Braid. This is his creation. In some ways, I feel as though Blow is trying to express his own thoughts through the gameplay and story of Braid itself.

It seems as though Tim wants perfect control in the fantasy world he lives in. He can control time, for f***s sake! He can correct his mistakes and try over and over with no consequences, until he gets it right. He also moves everyone back and forth when he moves and even slows time down to a near grindin halt. Tim seems to want everything the way he does, and its that sort of gameplay-involved characterization that makes Braid such a fascinating game.

I started playing Braid this morning. Yeah. This morning. I lost all five hours in one bloody day. I'm still amazed at how I did that. But I suppose its a testament to how truly gripping and thought-provoking Braid really is. It may be obtuse for many, and there are still some parts within the texts that don't add up (including how the text itself is a bit jarring from the rest of the game), but the time-mechanics platforming and deeper hidden narrative make Braid a truly unique indie creation. I'm giving it a 9/10.

I remember playing this game way back when it was new at a friend's house. I'll never forget the frustration we felt as an entire room full of teenagers struggled to get some of the game's trickier puzzle pieces, or the cheers that went up when a puzzle was finally untangled, or the audible gasps elicited by the game's final level.

Part of me was worried that buying the game now, seven years later, and playing it would dull some of those memories. I was worried it wouldn't be as good as I remembered. But to my relief, it's just as difficult and rewarding and strange as I remembered. This game always triggers some weird and almost indescribable emotions from me, and I'm never sure if that's due to the unique score, the hauntingly vague story, my own nostalgia, or a mixture of all three.

İlginç bir şekilde melankolik, aynı zamanda romantik. Tarzı eski, oynanışı akıcı. Eğlendirici bir platform, zevkli bir bulmaca oyunu.

Must be tons of reviews/recommendations by now. If you haven't played this game yet I'll write why you may want to consider this, especially if it's sitting in your library. Like a fine bottle of wine, maybe it's time to open it.

So many indie games nowadays, but where did all these greenlight games spark from? It may be debatable, I certainly don't think Braid was the origin, but definitely a large contributor to the catalytic process. It was released back in 2008/2009, about 7 years ago.

Why didn't I play it sooner? I have a lot of memories of playing 2D platformers back in the early 1990's. A lot of them were very painful, like The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants.

Braid is actually a very well designed game. It's not painful to play. There are about 5 main worlds. Each of these worlds have unique mechanics that are activated mainly by rewinding time. So the whole rewinding thing isn't just a blatant rip off from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ... which was one of my main concerns, thus delaying Braid, as I had enjoyed PoP very much.

What made this game fit all together nicely IMHO is actually the colourful dynamic background art and Irish Folk/Celtic genre of music. But what has made this game legendary to some people? It's the story. Only at the very end there's a twist! When you finish the game, there's a lot of unanswered questions which will get you to go researching online for the interpretation of what had actually happened. In essence the story is one big metaphor. There are also some nifty tricks that can be done to confirm it, if you are one to stray away from linear gameplay.

Which brings me to ... well there are some really interesting and nutty people in life. You know the ones that do some really crazy stuff in games because they may be genuinely really interested in it. And John Blow had ingeniously catered for that crowd. I suggest playing through the worlds by yourself figuring out each puzzle. They're doable, trust me ... if I can do it, you can too :) Don't look up some walkthrough. But once your done with the closure of the game ... if you're content with the amount of puzzles you've solved ... feel free to do so.

Having said that, I really don't like games where you can't go back and complete some small task or quest without having to replay the entire game again. What's ironic about this is I think this is a feature that stems from classic Japanese adventure video games. Something that Blow and Fish have complained about...

Is the game epic? It's definately quite an accomplishment. To many people, I know this game is seen as epic. My personal preference however says it's a good game ... that somehow has become overrated.

I can't quite point my finger on it though. I guess for me 2D platformers still have some sort of historical limitation. Like I remember games like Super Mario Bros. 3 when finding secrets like warp whistles ... etc ... that was exciting! Hopping in a boot in Ice World and sliding. Or jumping on a Parabeetle. Those were the moments! And spending late nights with sleepovers at friends places ... leaving the Nintendo on all night but turning the CRT TV off with the pull/push switch. That's a magic that I don't think can be replicated these days even with a game like Braid. Perhaps maybe for a younger generation, but we can't ignore the fact that they also have access to 3D and even VR these days.

The magaical moment of success after spending hours on a section is truly amazing.
I've been playing my second time, just to go through the story.
Artistically pleasing, not a fan of retro nonetheless.

Wonderful puzzle platformer. The relation between story and gameplay mechanics in the different chapters is astonishing, and the last level is hands down the most surprising and mindblowing experience I ever had in a video game. Honestly. It may not be all that cinematic or convoluted like in other games that are liked because of this, but for me there was a certain "immediacy" in the whole scene that only this game made achieved for me.
