I played this one on the xbox and it's just as fun as I remember. Though if you want to buy it wait for a sale, as it's not quite worth the 10$ it costs. Very fast paced but rather short missions (13 total, I think) and no multiplayer. Loads of special weapons to wreak utter destructuion upon hordes of enemies.

DO NOT FORGET TO USE MISSILES!
Also, do yourself a favor when you pick this one up, set your compatiblity mode to XP service pack 2 or 3 to prevent the "Unsupported Graphics card" error

It was okay then on like the third mission the escort mission it is impossible to get all four convoys there so you end up only saving two then you fly to a big battle and get your ♥♥♥ handed to you and there are no checkpoints so you get to redo a very long mission. That alone, no checkpoints, made me uninstall and begin the process of forgetting I wasted any time on this.

Even if the game had checkpoints, the controls are still garbage and there are two horrible problems. The first is that a lot of times you have to be going in the direction of the sun because enemies are right directly in front of it so you have to stare into a god damn supernova sun while you fight and it will burn your ♥♥♥♥ing eyes out. I had to play with my eyes nearly closed half the time. That and your crosshair is barely noticable during heavy action which is always. I CONSTANTLY in all the action and confusion lost my crosshair so most of the time I had no idea where I was shooting. Another problem is that the big ships shoot a constant stream of green lasers that are not dodge-able no matter where you are, and you have to be within range to shoot them so it makes no sense and you get ripped apart fast.

NOT a old classic at all, just a old pain. But hey it got 75% positive reviews so it has to be good right? I just need to get good right?

If you don't mind playing a transformers kind of game from 2000, then this is the game for you. On sale, at least.

I like the game (bugs put aside) as it have it's own charm, so to speak, but I won't be playing this for days... Nice if you have a slow internet connection, the download isn't big.

After a great battle on the planet Earth, the human-race needed to find new resources. Helios was a grand planet, and the humans were able to settle down and become happy once again after such a grueling and exhausting battle on Earth. There was an enemy, though, that remained unnoticed for quite some time. The resulting battle between the races claimed many lives, hampering the human's chances of survival. However, there was hope in the form of a machine. Known as the Havoc Suit, the high-powered machine is able to transform from a mech to a jet fighter, making it the ultimate weapon to counter the opposition's heavy armor and high-tech weapons. You are placed behind this heavily armored, high-tech scrap of metal, and with its great firing powers, you are the humans last hope to prevail against the intruding forces. The game has little or no affiliation with the story. With no cut scenes, the game jumps from level to level, rather than flowing freely and with a purpose. Instead, Gun Metal is a collection of levels that can be found in any other mech game that are simply 'there' rather than created to further the game's story

While showing love for games like Virtual On and anime such as Robotech, the clunky controls, confusing visual style and simply underwhelming models can't make up for an interesting-enough set of mechanics and objectives, as ultimately the quests and goals fall into fast repetition. If being a transforming jet REALLY makes you jolly, wait for it to be on discount. :)

A decade after it's initial release, and Gun Metal is still awesome. For me, this game is a masterclass in focussed design. It doesn't try to be clever, with lots of gimmicks that are only there for their own sake. It just gives you good, solid, arcade-style action, and it does it extremely well. Your mech isn't loaded with three dozen special features that you completely forget about in the heat of the action. It does a limited number of things, but those are the only things you need it to do, and they all feel relevant. Running, strafing, transforming, boosting, barrel-rolling to dodge fire, and all the while firing, firing, firing on the enemy.

Yes, it does betray it's Xbox origins in the slightly awkward mouse control and limited graphics options, but honestly, once you dive in and get blasting, it all feels very natural. The barrel-rolling to dodge in jet mode feels particularly intuitive, as it's on the keys you use for strafing in mech mode (A and D by defaut as you'd expect). And you can always plug a control pad in if you find the mouse control a bit too hazy.

As far as I'm aware there's only one voice in the game, the guy who gives you orders, and he puts in a good performance. Maybe not award-winning, but solid, with simple dialogue, no ridiculous cringe-inducing histrionics, and status updates and encouragements as you progress through each mission. It's nice to actually be told you're doing well instead of being berated for something or other all the time! =P

In closing, if you want some simple, straightforward action with just enough depth to be engaging without being overwhelming, Gun Metal is for you.

Whoo! Robots! Explosions! Gun Metal is best summed up as Micheal Bay: The Video Game. Explosions, guns, robots, and a lot of ridiculous fun.

In my local currency this game goes for 1.70 on a 90% discount. Bought it on the premise of being a mech and fighter jet. Not disappointed, at all.

It's short, with about 4 hours of gameplay but it delivers solid fun. It's not overly complicated and does not try to be so and it's honesty is laudable.

Trust me, get it. Good arcady action that you'll lose yourself into and now it has Steam cards, for all those Steam aficionados like me.

Addendum: For those other reviews mentioning the control scheme, it's better to use mouse and keyboard than controller plug-in. With M+KB you can aim with more precision, they aiming reticule is not locked to nose only (you can shoot in 30-45 degress to the sides, up and down while flying forward).

Simple, short, sweet, and easy.

An old game that does a simple concept well with fast, to-the-point missions and a reasonable difficulty curve. Gun Metal doesn't do anything particularly special, but that may well be its strongest trait.

This is one of the cases when i wish Steam had an option for a neutral review beside positive and negative.

This game was awesomely fun 10 years ago when i picked it up on Xbox. Now, for 2014, when we have such a developed game industry, with so many choices - not quite...The missions are simply boring. So is the story. There is no difficulty options, and the missions are so easy...I've spent less than 7 hours to finish this game, and 4 of this hours i've spent just on 2 maps (from a total of 13 if i remember it right), the only ones challenging enough. The rest of them (11), i've finished from the very first attempt. They almost all revolve around protecting a city or a group of vehicles. Gun Metal also has no replayability value due to it being so easy to finish, and the lack of achievements or in-game challenges. Considering the release year - it has decent graphics and the maximum resolution is 1600x900.

With that being said - Gun Metal is still worth to try, especially if you own an old PC and dont have a big choice for the games to run on it, but only on a big sale. Overwise i would recommend to skip it. There are better options for $10 instead of a 7 hour lazy port game with no replayability value.
