Well... I wish I could write a review, but the game is asking me for a second activation code! The steam one doesn't work so I can't play. I sent the developer an email, and posted feedback in the forums here. So, I'm going to give this a thumbs down since it is absolutely worthless at this point. If they ever get back to me, and give me an actual code, and don't just rip off my money, I'll update this. Until then this is a 0 star review.

This game is a good pick for people who would like to play within the Shadowrun universe with their friends.

IMPORTANT NOTES-

- This game is NOT made by HBS.

- This game is more of a combat strategy game than anything else.

- The only real "RPG" elements are the Karma point distribution and the gear selection.

Is this like the other Shadowrun titles? No. But it is entertaining and maybe a good way to get your friends interested in Shadowrun in the first place if they don't want to play the HBS games or haven't played the tabletop game.

Having enjoyed the other Shadowrun games I got this expecting more of the same. I was dissapointed to say the least. When you spend more time picking out your characters underpants than their skills something is wrong. You have two "Statistics" both of which offer bland variations of combat upgrades and one or two skills that access locked off rooms in a map. Melee you pick Blades or Blunt, but don't worry they are effectively identical with the only real difference being a bonus against a particular enemy type towards the end of the line. Yes, line as skills are simply there to give you abilities that use that item. You have basic proficiency in every skill from the start and the only real gain from putting points into a skill is a shorter cooldown on some abilities. Ranged you have the greatest variety of options with a whole THREE skills to pick from Pistols, Shotguns, or Automatics. Magic is reduced to only two options as well with one featuring different ways to summon the same critter and the other containing both direct damage spells in the game. Tech based skills get the same gutting as everything else with deckers being possibly the furthest deviation from archetype I have ever seen in a game. Deckers do not jack in or access the Matrix, instead they have been reduced to crippled mages. Supernatural enemies are immune to tech damage so there is an entire third of them who you cannot effect and you have only a direct damage ability and an aoe with a medium cooldown. The mission hub is tiny and could have been completely replaced with a post mission debriefing screen where you decide if you want to buy one of the two upgrades you have for your items and then pushes you on to the next mission. Instead you have a different vendor for weapons, armor, magic and tech and each has between two and nine items total since there are only three variations of any particular weapon and only two options for armor. Cyberware? nope none for sale. All in all if you want a bland easy turn based non tactical blast em up to play with a buddy buy this crap on sale, or better yet buy a couple nerf guns and an egg timer you will have more fun.

Not a terrible game, I think. The decker/hacker/whatever-they-call-the-matrixrunners these days killing things by hacking them is ridiculous, but the gameplay isn't bad, and the story's better than the 360 Shadowrun. Would recommend unless Harebrained puts multiplayer into Returns/Dragonfall/Hong Kong.

Here goes my take on SRC-BL: There is some good, bad and ugly here, I'll break it down.

The Good:

I love the art and combat style, more so than the Hairbrain version of the game. Shooting NPCs and watching them ragdoll replete with blood slowly flowing from their headwounds ...lends itself to an awsome sense of violent immersion. (Be forewarned, if such is not your thing...then move on.)

Missions are not ball-busting yet, they're not mind-numbingly easy. They take ample tactics and forethought. They got ths one just right.

Sound is comparible to its predecessors.

Some have complained about lag though performance for me has been adequate (getting around 60 fps on my humble rig.)

Character creation is awesome - nuff said.

The Bad:

Hencemen cannot be customised, any gear you find can't be equipped nor can their skills. You're left choosing from a list of prefabbed hencemen the skills and equipment of which automatically advance as you advance.

The skill tree is rather shallow compared to the HB version of the SR games.

The game can become a grind of: kill this,..return; escort that...return and so on.

The "hub" (where you buy gear, pick up quests) is significantly smaller than in previous SR games.

The Ugly:

First thing I noticed was that there was no "collision detection" in the hub. I would spawn on top of other toons and walk through them. (the Hub needs work.) Maybe not a big deal...but it sort of kills the immersion for me.

Don't come into this game expecting a huge MMORPG experience. I would say that this is more/less a co-op version of the typical game. Rather disappointed when the focus was changed from online to "lockeddown".

Voice acting vs. text. The voice acting is plausable though not good enough to resist the desire for the interactive text-based version that allowed you to choose alternate direction/personality to your mission objectives.

Conclusion:

All-in-all I enjoy the game, short-comings notwithstanding. If your a SR fan, you probably will too...if not, don't bother.

It's just not a good Shadowrun or Turn-based game...

For the Shadowrun part of it:

It's missing soo many weapons, spells, and other unique things that make Shadowrun.
If you're going to roll as a Mage, you're going to really only have like 2 spells you use... Seriously... I don't mean you'll only pick 2 out of X. I mean really.. There's like 2 spells... In the entire skill tree.
No sniper rifles like in Dragonfall. There's just so much content missing from this game. It's like an Alpha version of Returns. And the story is just god-awful and uninteresting.

From the turn based part of it... It's just reptitive. Every mission is the same frikken thing. It doesn't function the way Returns/Dragonfalls' gameplay does either. Action points are spent differently, and it kind of ruins it.

I could go into more detail, and i could nit pick . But I just don't think this game is any good. I know the devs have other obligations, and they have limited funding... But this game isn't complete at all. Multiplayer is also pointless. There's nothing unique here. It's a super reptitive, poorly designed turn based RPG with very little RPG, and a Shadowrun paint job. Dev's im sorry. But, you still have a lot of work to do.

Major disappointment, especially after playing other Shadowrun games.

The one big positive is the customization options for your character's appearance. Yep, that's it. Everything else is terrible. So very disappointed that this is what was released after such a long wait. This could've been a great game, but instead it's a crappy WoW knockoff with about 1% of the content and only a slight resemblance to the Shadowrun ruleset. Don't waste your time with this one.

Likes: Ease of character creation.

Dislikes: Limited (if any) racial modifiers; Riggers are neutered; Deckers are neutered; No Matrix interfacing; No Astral interfacing; Riggers are neutered; Some weapons are maxed (pistols and blades), while others are nerf'd (Seriously, an LMG that does less dps than a heavy pistol?); Riggers are neutered; And, last but definitely not least, I need vehicles, not radio controlled toys. Gimme a Stonewall, for fragsake!

Now, I realize the game is still "new"-ish, and all, but Devs, please... I've been running the shadows for nearly thirty years, now, and I *need* you guys to open the Matrix, the Astral Planes, and give me *SOMETHING*, Hell, I'll take a rigged and armed Eurocar Westwind. Just, please, get rid of the toy drones, and let us RIG.

I have mixed feelings on this game. I love Shadowrun (it’s an rpg), but this is an xcom-lite tactical game with a Shadowrun theme. The big question: ‘is it fun and worth the sticker price?’ Yes its fun, but that might be my Shadowrun allegiance speaking. I don’t think it’s worth the sticker price, due to the lack of replayability and the stale co-op. There are better and cheaper tactical games out there, and for that matter, Shadowrun games as well. SR Chronicles has no offline single player mode, and had a horrible rollout because of it. I wrote two other reviews before this and the devs asked me to reevaluate each time, so I’ve put in more than a hundred hours playing multiple characters start to finish getting a good feel for the game. I’d pass on this game for a couple of months in hopes that they get their act together; even then this should only be a $15-20 game.

Likes:
-The community
-The graphics in the tactical map
-The music: Mass Effect 1 meets the original Shadowrun '93 game
-The theme

Gripes:
-Thumbnailed character portrait at creation.
-Character names aren’t unique – I’ve been in matches that had multiple people with the same name.
-I've had up to 8 people stuck in a party, which can only handle 4, and we all had to restart the game to get a mission to work.
-Broken character clothing as loot, with no way to sell the 20+ pairs of blue jeans, etc.
-Skills/gear max about midway through the game, making the skills kinda boring.
-No magical counterpart to cyberware – initiation would be nice.
-Low essence cyberware is no longer available midway through the game, so if you install something early on that you don’t like later on, you’re potentially stuck with it (if you already have 3/4 slots filed).
-Lack of variety in music.
-Voice acting is flat - tone is always the same, so in combat people won’t sound frantic, or are overly bubbly, etc.
-Many missions share the same maps, and in many cases you start and finish in the same spot.
-Graffiti seems a bit bubblegum and usually looks like it was done with a giant sharpie marker.
-Character conversations in the hub: low-res character models, terrain that normally looks good, but is zoomed in so much it becomes a pixilated mess. To top it off the objects in the setting are high-resolution.
- Occasionally when you kill someone they’ll become obnoxiously clipped to their gear as it rolls away (most notably flamethrower users).
-There needs to be a message system for the in-game friends list to make sense.
-Co-op needs an initiative log or something along those lines to fix the cache click problem – so you don't worry about attacking the same guy or moving on top of each other, stealing each others melee kills, and potentially losing multiple turns to actions you didn't know you took (I frequently lost 1 or 2 turns this way, but I've lost as many as 4).
-Co-op incentive just isn’t there: If you get together with all your friends and try to run through together it’s fun-ish (but needs voice chat to coordinate), but you really can’t play with anyone else in the interim unless you want to continuously go through the same levels. If you get left behind, trying to co-op with your now higher level friends is even more difficult, because you could be stuck doing 3-6 damage while the guys you’re with are doing 20+ and they are sporting 20+ points of armor and 3x your hp, making you a flimsy target that can’t get better gear and is only getting a fraction of the karma. While your group may go back and redo all the missions to catch you up the rewards make it more like grinding for the sake of grinding.
-If you run this game solo the npc’s only come with a single skill and sometimes their skills will unlevel between missions, and they don’t otherwise keep good pace with the karma level of the story.

The devs have already drastically changed how the game was balanced since it released (abilities, damage, etc), and this is a game coming out of early access. They have whole portions of the game that aren’t even developed yet, that are part of the core game. The bugs are frequent and atrocious. You’ll find yourself having to logout of the game every few runs. Set pieces in the background will attach to the foreground, and trolls horns will disconnect and float in the next square over. Uncontrollable screen spinning is also a problem every now and again, as well as broken cursors. Critical hits will often cause the screen to zoon into the backside of a wall, instead of on the action. Frequently the End Turn button will disappear or move somewhere else on the screen. I think my biggest gripe is that the ability buttons don’t have enough of a click box (or it changes randomly) and when you go to click an ability you instead move to the space below the ability box. There are so many bugs that it’s not uncommon to run into people grumbling about something that should have worked (e.g. over 100% chance to succeed at a skill only to fail). If early access was closed beta, then the release is open beta. This is not a completed game and from day-to-day you wonder when they will reset your skills and what major nerf or tweak is going to happen next. All games get rebalancing, but this game gets totally retooled every time a patch comes out, especially with things like pets being added before fixing the bugs, making you feel like the devs still don’t know where they wanna go with it.
