After the update that came before the new dlc a number of game breaking bugs were introduced that have not been fixed. The worse part is that I have not even bought the dlc and rather then have a more stable experinence (since the dlc had even more bugs) my experience is actually worse because the game was updated to look for the dlc even if you don't have it. Making it so that I can't select random for any options when playing against the computer since it crashes after searching for and selecteing dlc that I never purchased. The update was also designed so that all of the starting menus remind you that you don't have the dlc by showing gray boxes everywhere. Which in my option just adds salt to the wound since it keeps reminding me of the reason my game is broken while saying give me money.

This is a great game for the old school strategy games lovers and especially those that used to play the original Age of Mythology and want to relive their childhood. However there have been some issues that force me to not recommend this game.

The good
  • The game is what it calls itself. It's the classic Age of Mythology with improved visuals, which to me are a welcome change
  • Golden gift campain. I never had the chance to play this campain, nor was I aware of it's existance, so it was a fun bonus
  • The game supports the workshop

The bad
  • There has been an issue to A LOT (including me) users where the game doesn't launch at all (redownloading, verifying integrity of game cache doesn't seem to work)
  • Multiplayer can be very laggy, making it super annoying to play with your friends
  • You are basically paying for the old Age of Mythology with some make-up on

Value for money
Assuming you won't have an issue with running the game, it is still fairly expensive (Standing on 27.99€) for just a re-skin. If you could find it being on a 50% sale, you could consider getting it. 75-80% sale is totally worth it

Final thoughts
If I were you I would not buy Age of mythology: Extended Edition as long as the issue of the game not starting still exists

I played AOM back many moons ago, so I love a steam version of this game. However, the 'enhanced' visuals are a joke. I see a little up date for the water, but that is it. Also, the game has not been able to launch in months. Too overpriced too in my opinion. This is more of a $5-$10 game.

This used to be my favorite game growing up. As a kid i played this 24/7 and i loved it. But the lag the bugs and the developres unwillingnes to fix them is really a big deal breaker. I wanted a chance to play this game again but turns out its really not worth it to play it. If it gets fixed soon its going to be an awesome game but if not then there is no reason to buy it.

I cannot recommend this version of the game. Currently needs a lot of fixing before I can retracked it.

The amount of glitches present at current time is just staggering, not just the visual kind where a wall is half blurry half well textured either. The largest example I just experienced from the original campaign Fall of the Trident: chapter 12 on October 19th 2016 is where some of my units got suck inside my town centre. Before this units got stuck on unwalkable parts of hills as well (still only FotT). Not to mention the visual upgrade is slapdash with Erebus being so dark I thought the greys and blacks got crushed. The added Bloom didn't help either.
Have yet to try out the other 2 campeigns, and I do not own the Chinese expansion, although from reading others experience I'm not missing much. Also the rebalance to units feels wrong to me.

DLC for a game should be something extra, and those who don't have it should still be able to play the standard game.
Not in this case though. Since the Far Eastern Mythology DLC came out the game no longer works for me. The first time I started a game the AI consisted of civs all belonging to the new DLC, yet I didn't own it. Then the game realises that and crashes. And now I can't even run it unless I 'update' it, as in 'unless you have all DLC you won't get anything'...

...And that was months ago, and I'm still waiting for this to get fixed...

And untill the moment it has been fixed, I'm convinced the devs are either trying to scam you or they don't give a flying damn thing about this game anymore. And that is a real shame, because this was, and still is, a great chapter in the Age games line, and it hurts to see it in this state right now.

When playing the Egyptians, you can form the ku-Klux-klan (priests) and throw some rocks at a big black guy (Atlantean titan).
==> A place in my dreams

Sidenote: Great Game and fun with friends

Love it! I've not had any problems whatsoever and I'm just about to complete the game... before moving onto completing the achievements.

If you like to 100% a game (steam achievement wise), do not buy this, the hidden achievement is unobtainable, due ot it being for an event that happened years ago.

The game is just great (not what I can say about this particular version because I can't play it, it just keeps crashing), but in general, the game is just great. It can teach you about different mythologies, which is very culturally pleasing (even though some things are not very accurate).

I do really like this game. It has served me well since childhood and continues to bring back good times!
Though multiplayer is bugged, it can still be worked out by remembering to save games and load them again once a crash occours.

One last comment: Who the hell picked the names for the soundtrack files?! Hot damn that is funny.

Steam\Steamapps\Common\Age of Mythology\Sound\xpack\xtaunts\en\999 theme.mp3 Fantastic!
Steam\SteamApps\common\Age of Mythology\sound\music\fight\oi, that pops!!!.mp3 Another famous track
