What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game has been in development by a small team since it was conceived almost four years ago. It is fully self-funded by our small studio. As such, we don't have the benefit of the team size required to playtest a game of this scope; an MMO no less.

Further, we simply do not have the resources required to host servers for everybody and thus make it a PBT (Public Beta Test).

So, we decided to use a combination of Steam's backend services as well as our own custom ones, to host and deploy the game to a select group of people who are interested in helping us make the game the best that it can be.

You - in the targeted select group - are probably interested in this sort of game, especially now that you have the chance to shape the final stages of such a massive game, rather than just running around and shooting things.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It's ready when it's ready. Right now it ain't ready.

Like you, we love Valve, so what other way to honor their awesomeness than to officially support Valve Time?

OK just kidding. Anyway, we're looking to run the Early Access program for three to four months before releasing the final version. Of course, this being game development, delays can and most likely will happen. However, we'll keep you informed every step of the way. Besides, with regular updates, you probably won't even care when the final version is released since you will be part of the on-going development process and thus have access to our builds. Remember, the game is not just going into development; it has been in development for over four years now and we're just racing through that last mile.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Aside from bug fixes and playtesting tweaks and improvements, the core gameplay, world, assets (items, weapons etc) etc will remain relatively unchanged since the game is in early Beta now and is content complete, feature locked etc.

So in all respects, the full version will just be a polished version of the EA version and with all features, levels, weapons, inventory items etc enabled and fully functional.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“An early Beta of the full game which will be "stagger" released in order to facilitate focused testing.

A staggered release is one in which not the entire world, features, items etc are enabled. Instead, depending on what we need tested, those aspects will be enabled in subsequent builds.

For example, the first Early Access Build (internal: EAB01) unlocks one planetary scene (Heatwave) and all three decks of the carrier (GCV-Starguard). Since this is a world testing build, no weapons, vehicles, aircrafts, inventory items etc are player usable. You will be able to explore both of these massive areas and carry out various actions. So we would be looking for feedback such as player movement speed, found a hole in the game world, I went swimming - and drowned, I moved from Starguard deck 1 to deck 2 and the game froze etc

Then with EAB02 and subsequent builds, we will fix bugs, make tweaks and suggestions based on feedback from EAB01, enable new scenes, features, enable weapon classes, items etc.

Rinse. Repeat.

By the end of the Early Access period, we hope to have covered all aspects of the game, the world, fixed bugs (fatal and otherwise), tweaked weapons and items, tweaked flight and vehicular dynamics etc.

Doing it this way allows us to "focus test" each aspect of such a massive game, rather than unloading everything at once and then not getting quality feedback because everyone is running around with weapons of mass destruction and waiting for someone else to do the playtesting. :)”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes.

  • The Early Access has three exclusive Early Access Tiers, Commander, Ambassador, Emissary (handy comparison chart) which will not be featured or available in the final full version. Once the final full version of the game is released, these tiers will no longer be available for purchase.

  • The free Early Access Commander Perk reward bundles are also exclusive to the Early Access version and will not be available for purchase when the full version is released. Only Tactical Advancement Kits (TAK) as well as individual items will be available for purchase in the final version.

  • For testing purposes, some (e.g. weapons, inventory items, vehicles, aircraft etc) items available during the Early Access will be made available for free and available via Combat Experience Point (CEP) accumulation, free server loot drops etc.

When the in-game cash shop is enabled, anything that you purchase there will be yours to keep.

  • Aside from all the items which you will receive when you purchase an Early Access tier or which you will be able to buy once the in-game shop is enabled, everything else accumulated during this phase for testing purposes will be removed and reset in the full version of the game. Similarly, all consumables (ammo, grenades, energy cells) used up will not be replenished and their counts will remain unaffected.

Examples of what happens to your stuff after Early Access period is over and the final version is released:

If you got a machine gun as part of your Early Access tier purchase, you get to keep it.

If you bought a sniper rifle and ammo in the cash shop, you get to keep them (aside from whatever ammo you used up).

If you gained or purchased Combat Experience Points and Combat Training Certificates, you get to keep them.

If you have in-game currency (GALCREDS) in your account, you get to keep them.

If you got a free item (e.g. jetpack, vehicle, aircraft etc) for testing purposes - and which you didn't purchase or got via an Early Access tier, it will be removed.

Once the full version is released, the game will be made available as free to play - no purchase necessary and no monthly fee.

You will have the option to buy TAKs at any time after you have downloaded the free game client.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Throughout his game development history, over twenty-five years now this August, Derek Smart has always valued the feedback from gamers who play his games; whether they like them or not. This is what shaped the future of all the games released by 3000AD since 1996. So rest assured, this game will be no different. In fact, we will be setting up a roadmap website where everyone can pitch in and vote on issues which can help make the game even better for everyone.

This new game is no different in terms of community involvement and feedback. However, this is our first foray into the world of massive scale MMO game development.

While our previous niche games have been massive, they were not designed to support so many players nor MMO gameplay. As a result of this, now more than ever, we need community involvement to help us test, tweak and fine tune this game so that we can make it the best that it can be for all those who play and will play it in the years to come.

This is a very complex multiplayer game that features a very large and detailed game world. As such, it is going to take a LOT of people a LOT of time to help us get it where it needs to be.

In addition to the game's Steam discussion forum, our own discussion forums as well as a dedicated bug reporting website, we hope that you will participate in constructive feedback with us as we work hard on the game's completion.”

Early Beta Access

The Steam Early Access build gives you the opportunity to play and test the game during this Beta stage as we move toward a final release in the coming months.

Purchasing an Early Access Tier (Commander, Ambassador, Emissary) gives you immediate access to the game in its current state. As we release builds (several times a month), those will be immediately pushed to Steam for download and testing. Here is a (handy comparison chart) of all three tiers.

As we "stagger" (means in parts) release the game by enabling various features, levels, assets, weapons etc you will get the chance to be a part of the testing and game balancing effort.

Release Roadmap

As the game will be stagger released from Early Access builds through to the final version, several key scenes, features, items, weapons etc will be unlocked through each testing phase. For more detailed info on this, please read the Early Access tab at the top of this page.

Some key issues which we will be focusing on during the Early Access phases:

  • Scene topology, geometry, object placement. e.g. holes in the world, inaccessible areas which should be accessible, weather patterns, lighting anomalies, performance improvements, collision detection, transition (space to planet and vice versa) etc
  • Player dynamics e.g. movement, gestures, asset (vehicles, aircrafts etc) use
  • Weapon properties and ballistics, usage and customization
  • Inventory Item properties, usage and customization
  • Asset use, including physics, multi-user properties, dynamics (vehicles, aircraft, naval)
  • Character customization and progression
  • In-game shop testing, purchases, trading etc
  • AI entity attributes (e.g. AI controlled Surface-To-Air launch systems)
  • Player communication, chat, item transfer etc
  • Server stress testing, login issues, character saving and progression

About This Game

Line Of Defense is a sci-fi MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) in which thousands players across various servers, fight for the control of bases located on planets and in space.

The game was developed using a custom engine and features a massive battle between Galactic Command (GALCOM) military forces and the Insurgents, an opposing Terran paramilitary force. Both sides fight on planets, in space, inside stations etc for the control of various territories. The tide and balance of war are both dynamic, fluent and happen in real-time.

Players wage war as infantry characters in either first or third person perspective with the ability to use assets such as land and sea vehicles, planetary and space craft.

The battle takes place in a large game world that features a large populated planet (Lyrius) with sprawling bases, a space region with stations and a roaming command carrier.

Lyrius provides access to the space region where the four stations as well as a massive battler carrier (GCV-Starguard) are located. You are able to enter these stations and carrier bases either in first person mode (infantry) or by flying to them and docking with a fighter or shuttle craft.

You can read more about this massive world on the official website.

As you play the game, you gain Combat Experience Points (CEP) through various actions. These can then be used to gain medals, rank as well as Combat Training Certificates (CTC) which are used to gain various skills.

The final full version which will be released at the end of the Early Access phase, will be free to play, with no monthly subscriptions.

However, you will probably want to purchase a Tactical Advancement Kit (TAK) to get you started. Though buying a TAK bundle is cheaper, the full version of the game (released after the Early Access phase) will also have all game related items for sale separately via the in-game cash shop.

Each Early Access tier comes with a TAK as well as a choice of Commander Perk.

You can read a lot more info on the game's official website, including the game's full feature set.

Early Access Review
Installed the game when it was free to play for roughly 2 minutes. Got into the game only to have the game laggy as all hell and wasn't able to move. If you're a female, you can ONLY be a sniper or a pilot...seems like a risky decision there on the developer's part, but what do I know?

When I finally got into the game (Because it couldn't initialize the engine for DirectX11) and went to the options menu, the dropdown boxes with the graphics and whatnot were white text on a white background. Clearly a good choice for their art director. When I finally was able to get into the game and "play" it, I was introduced to a ton of lag and no movement from my character whatsoever. I turn the game off to fix it, and now I have to purchase the game again. Please return my free dollars, because I spent too much on this game.

I highly recommend this game because Derek Smart really lives up to his surname, for he is as smart as the sky is orange.

Having spent a bit of time wandering the enivornments, the vision of the game starts to make sense. It's sometimes tough to see where something is going without being content complete, LoD is no different. That being said, if you aren't impressed by the sense of scale creating a real sense of combined-arms conflict, you may want to stick with the annual iterations of the franchise shooters.

Gotta love all the negative reviews from the people that got the game free due to a Steam mistake!

The truth is, this is a game in Early Access that is going through a methodical test process, it's not a 'ready to play' game. To some it will seem dull and boring until there is full combat and equipment, to others it's an opportunity to help make this a great game at launch.

So far we have been given 3 maps to look at and identified numerous bugs with animations and the environment, all of which have already been patched as far as I can see.

There have been some sacrifices on graphical quality of the maps to enable great gameplay, so don't expect to see realistic pebbles and flowers, these maps are designed for combat not admiring the flora and fauna.

If you want a feature complete game to play, wait until next year when it comes out F2P.

If you want to help test and shape a potentially great new game, bag yourself a package.

I wasn't here for the initial release, so I can't say I have experienced the same server and game issues as those who played the first day, but most of those problems have been fixed from what I can tell.

As this review is about a week or so into the Early Access release of this game, there isn't much to say. As time passes by, more stuff will be unlocked for us testers, and I will get back to you on those features. So far so ok I guess.

Taking the game for face value-

Graphics are acceptable.
Movement is smooth, for the most part.
Environment is massive, large scale.
Some odd mechanic quirks.
Not much in-game functions active yet.

Don't buy now unless you want exclusive in-game items and/or entry to beta. That, and the entry, is pretty much all the price-tag for this game is for. Otherwise, it will be f2p when released. Not sure where the front-page idiot reviewer got the notion that this game was pay to play, but this is steam, so these trolls are to be expected.

At this point of development we can't still experience weapons and items in the game, but we're able to get through a planet base and a carrier in space and what I might just say is that the scope of the battlefields and the freedom of movement is astonishing.

Big places with detailed interiors and exteriors that realy make you enjoy the roaming around you can do right now.

Can't wait to see what will come down the pipeline.

A lot of the elements of this game haven't been released so it is only fair to review based on the game so far.

For me it has been easy to log in, and despite a few minor lag issues, fairly stable as well. Far more stable than some other early access games I've tried. It does indeed lack polish, as other reviewers have noted, but as an early, early access game it seems like it is coming together really well. There is no combat or interaction with objects etc yet - this stage seems more about map and server testing. Going into the game aware of these limitations, I've been impressed with what I've seen so far so am glad to give it a positive review.

This is a game that has, from what I've seen, great potential. The scale of this game really impressed me and if vehicles and combat are implemented well and work as intended I think it will be a lot of fun. I look forward testing these things out as they develop in the future - if that sounds like something you would enjoy then I reccomend it.

Line of Defense has the potential to go far. Granted, the Early Access is a little rough around the edges, but that's what Early Access is for...to help the developer mold the game into something great!

The Heatwave map is huge with plenty of tactical positions to be had. I was also impressed with the detail of the GCV-StarGuard maps. Each deck is pretty big with lots of places for firefights. I can't wait to see the other maps once they are unlocked.

This game is dead but so far it looks good. I met one person who said "high" before either leaving or crashing. That was the best experience i had in this game but it still had a good effect on my opinion for this game. There also is no gameplay so far. 8.5/10

To all you fellow players, this game is set in the Battlecruiser Universe, which Derek Smart created 25 years ago. We are truly blessed to have such an opportunity to play such a game. I believe this game has the potential to overrun Planetside 2, as well as to be a solid game, but we as players must give it time to be nurtured and tended. Anyone with a brain in their heads knows this. Anyone that has taken the time to read the FAQ's both here and on the Website and to wait to post with a clear head would be able to figure out what it is they ask on the discussion boards here on Steam.

I only ask that you give it a chance, at least once it Launches at 100% Free-to-Play sometime Q1 - 2015.
