What the developers have to say:

“Spark Rising Early Access is your chance to play Spark Rising while in a wee infant state so that you can help us raise this baby into a grand game one day. Which pretty much means that much of the game in its current form is in flux, and is very raw. The final form could change dramatically based on your feedback, your care, your love, and your rants. This is a work in progress and therefore contains all sorts of wonky bugs, which could be fun to screw around with, or turn you into a madman. Or woman. Whichever you prefer.

So what exactly can you expect from an early access game? Pretty much this:
  • Bugs that make you go hmmm.....
  • Features yet to be added
  • Full features that may get axed because they sucked
  • Save files that will eventually be wiped
  • Missing or unclear objectives
  • Changing control schemes as we optimize
  • Graphics and performance that has yet to be optimized

If you are the sort of trend setting gamer that loves the behind the scenes look at what we are creating, warts and all, and loves the idea of shaping this game from a baby to an adult, then this early access is for you. But if the thought of this sort of thing makes you want to smack a baby, we suggest that parenting ain't quite for you. Better you wait to play a more stable game, and wait until we officially launch the game.

Currently the game is expected to stay in early access form for at least the next 8 months. Based on how things progress, we either continue to build the game in early access form or officially launch. Either way our plan is to continue to add features to the game for some time to come.

For early backers of our game before we launched on Steam, if you prefer a Mac version you will get it. For the launch on Steam, we will only sell the PC version at this stage. The Mac version will come a few months afterwards.”

I bought this game for the cheap price tag before steam refunds were a thing. I'd have refunded my two dollars if it had been, because this game is not what it tries to sell itself to be. The arenas right now are these tiny areas.. where there's a never ending spawn of boxy bad guys that come in. Destructable terrain? Yes, it's there---doesn't really mean much because the map is so small that you hardly invest any feelings on the destruction. "Dynamically changing arena"? Hardly. It's a small place that's got you cramped in, and hiding between the sorta-space-ish looking structures while you try to get your shots in. I'd call it unfinished, but it's not even that... it's not even something you could call a game right now as there's no point to anything you're doing in it.

Edit: Also, don't trust that lying trailer. You can't build jack-crap in this game "yet", as if it'll ever be implemented.

Unless you DON'T want to play a game that supposed to look EXACTLY like the trailer and videos they show for this... Don't get it...

They have everything mixed with mario world crap, as I am not very fond of it. No tutorial, no directions, no clear passage ways, it still needs A LOT of work on this game.

I think the creators are getting lazy, changing their minds too soon, etc.

I love the game with the enemies like they showed and discribed in the trailer/videos... Zombies, dinosaurs, monkies, robots, flying robots, GIANT robots...

Then... they... get... these... f*%$#ing things called........die guys... die guys = Shyguys... REALLY!? REALLY creators? Then they throw in there pokiemon, and some other random ♥♥♥♥...

This whole thing has gone to hell... IT was more beautufil when it started, with all the robots. Ever since they added mario themed stuff,... it just lost it's touch quickly for me...

Do yourself a favor and show these creators how much of a fool they are, and DON"T donate ANY money to them.

I'm already planning to contact my credit card company, or go to steam and get my money back... It's really, really, really, sad for this game to go SO wrong... -_-

The concept is pretty solid and I would say with Multiplayer, it may be better. There are a few things that really take away from it for me, namely the use of familiar sounds and game sprites that are easy to tell they are designed after other popular titles. I don't see enough in the game to say it is inspired from classics. It just seems a few random sounds and sprites in the small amount I played.

Sparkrising, as the trailer advertises you build a fort and defend crystals from waves of monster.
From flying bots to zombies, then you fight a big freaking mega bot of a boss....
That is what the game is all about right?

uhhh no...
no
no and uh no.

You have your exo suit, you shoot stuff, they die, you blow up a tower or two, you find a portal and then you leave....

Then you do the same thing, over and over and over again.

Back when I bought it, it did cost alot more, it had what was advertised but the bugs the general "OH GOD THE FPS IS AT LIKE 0!" made me uninstall and try again when my new laptop arrived.

now you have a stripped down indie shooter... thing.

now if you like that sort of thing then spend your £2.

other than that, RUN!

10/10 would waste my time again!

It's indeed a fast paced arcarde action FPS. The trailer shows something about making a fortress you can defend, maybe that's in multiplayer because i never saw that, but come to think of it, i dont remember there being a button in the menu for multiplayer. Maybe I missed it, didn't care since I would never play MP anyway.

It's voxel and random generated worlds. The generation part takes a while (much longer than it should given the size and lack of variety). So you are dumped on to this place with no indication what you are supposed to do, with this ghost like thing in front of you. It never speaks, but it does help shoot bad guys a little bit. Didn't do much besides get in the way of my vision. Then you run a little ways and you are supposed to shoot these "consoles" which are just large glowign blocks. Then a bunch of enemies spawn. Destroy all the consoles then get to the waypoint to escape to the next identically themed level. Enemies are pretty lame with a little variety. The magic guys are annoying. actually most of them are annoying, and not really difficult to take out. You have a machine gun that reloads very frequently, and a couple other alt shots you can pick up (one at a time). Watermelons were sticky bombs but being watermelons was kind of funny. There was a charge shot, a rail gun style shot, and a couple others i think.

Being voxel, you can destroy the terrain some, as well as enemies can when they drop bombs and such. Didn't really affect gameplay all that much though. Very colorful, but not texture to it. Just solid colors, which is good and bad in a way I guess.

Oh, and it's basically rogue-like, in that you die and you start again at level 1. Though I don't know if that matters much since the levels I played seemed more or less identical anyway.

Anyway, overall, not worth my time. It's in early access, but I dont think there would be enough improvement in gameplay style to interest me in the future.

This game is pretty fun at first, but after some time it gets pretty dull and boring. Devs should consider adding more guns and PVP, it could save this game. Because as for now, a player complete couple of stages and... What's the point of keep playing? It's all the same. Gets pretty repetitive and boring after a while.

Pretty interesting game. It is mysterious, doesn't give you a mission from the first second. You have to explore and find a mission to start, usually by looking for a building. You can overtake headquarters, ammo stations, and there are boss fights.

Feels repetitive, as there aren't many missions to do. I've overtaken so many headquarters, so many ammo stations, but only faced one boss in 9 worlds.

Also, the game doesn't get harder. You just keep taking headquarters.

There is no sense of progress or accomplishment.

It's an okay arcade shooter. Devs are nice and listen to feedback.

Positive:

- Unique setting/graphics
- Decent aiming and movement

Negative:

- In early access for a long time
- Meh enemies
- Boring to play alone
- Nothing much to accomplish
- No multiplayer
- No minimap, descriptions or any real tutorial that help you understand the game. For example, you might be told: to "Destroy 4 consoles", but you have to find the consoles yourself in a big level and have no indication of where to go. Another example would be that right after you complete an objective such as "Destroy 4 consoles", you get told to "Exit level and find waypoint" - You actually have to go search even more while fighting against noob AIs that give no challenge.

Wouldn't recommend right now.

At first this game way really hard to get a grasp on what to do. I just spent like 10 minutes figuring it out and the actual Spark Rising I still do not understand. Rampage and Legacy I do. I like Rampage the most really. This game is great just for wasting time. It is fun and it is something new and fresh.

Get this game if you have money and time to waste.

This game is a bundle of fun and can't wait for co-op. I hate to compare it to minecraft (voxel game) but that is the game everyone knows. It's more or less a battle minecraft with guns and the feeling you are in a mech. It's really fast-pased and looks like it has great promise. Now as I'm sure you know it's an early access so you'll see bugs here and there but they are on track for a great game. Dev gave me(and others) an early copy to help get these bugs out but i've had fun playing it while beta testing it as well.

My Rating 6/10 but this will change as more get added (Again it is in early access and they never to a full rating right away due to lack of features and content.

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT touch this game. While they game had a good concept it has go nowhere extremely fast. The devs don't seem to do much for it, and the main creator seems to love going on vacations more than working on the game.
As an early access game it lacks any real play-ability, I have followed this game since the beginning and nothing of value has been added. the screenshots above on spoofed and none o it was actually what it seems, at first glace it seems like a game with depths, but animation is terrible, gameplay is about a flash game worth of content and nothing is being worked on.

To me it would feel the devs just don't care enough about this game and seem to just avoid it as I would recommend you should.

Spark Rising has made a huge amount of progress since I first got involved in the kickstarter around october. Offering a pair of well refined game modes. One requiring you to take back control of a military base and defend it against an invading Titan with it's hordes of voxel minions. Along with a more parkour target shooting map to challenge your mastery of the games core movement/jumping/aiming mechanics.

Obviously as an early access or alpha game there are several areas that need to be fleshed out yet. Given Wicked Loot's fast iterative development process to date, you can expect to see features added quickly in very refined form. Along with a very direct line to the players. Through active test community, developer livestreams, etc.

You can get a pretty good idea of the gameplay through the development videos in the community hub. Alternatively you can check out the early access preview I put together on youtube:

These review was made at 8/5/2014

At these time i can see the game has a long way to go.. it is fun and i trust the Dev to take it all the way to the end seeing how it was on the Pre-alpha before.. and how its now and how much it moves

If any one will ask me what these is like il say its like Harkawn and Ace Of Spades combine

The game play right now dose have many bugs... but its fair for a game in its stage.. the updates come on a fair time, and give good change to the game
The Dev also seem to be listing to the community and Gamers of the game on what will happen next that is really awesome as you can really feel the work that come with the Dev and the gamers community of these game

If you you looking for a game to play right now il not recommend it just yet...

If you you looking for a game to play some time soon that and to support i do recommend these game

Feel free to ask any thing in the comments

Sometimes just being able to build everything my imagination can create isnt enough, Sometimes I need to destroy. Sometimes I need to find something beautiful someone else has made, and just blow it to smithereens. Sometimes I need to build an army from scratch and lead them in an unquestionable rout of the enemies forces. Sometimes I need all the awesomness that Spark Rising promises. This game is off to a great start so far so here is to hoping it continues to evolve and deliver on the promises it has made.

I will update this Review, when new updates come out and things change!

I played Alpha 4.0 that just came out. So if you have seen the game before (see screenshots in the Shop!), it did change quite a bit (It will change even more in the future). Afaik the art-direction will stay like that (might change a bit).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-xIarvMjTc&noredirect=1 (6 parts of cluesless gameplay)

I did play the older Versions too, but they are not representative anymore, so i cut that out at the end. Sorry, that´s the reason it has no real ending.

I like the graphics and performance was ok. You have slow-downs when you activate Boost or many Enemies are around. Imho the game runs good and playable without bigger issues (AMD X6, 8GB Ram, GTX560Ti Oc). I had absolutely no crashes or really big bugs (Textures are flickering when in window-mode).

TL/DR: Minecraft and "Drunken Robot Po.rnography" made a baby, while playing Super Mario on LSD. A lot of crazy fun and i can´t wait to get more of it and better and bigger Bosses (just saw one yet). There will be Minecraft-like crafting and building (Sandbox/Creative-Mode not integrated in 4.0) and Multiplayer.

So do i recommend it? Absolutely, if you want a crazy shooter (like explained above) and have the money to spare. If you´re not sure, where the journey will bring Spark Rising to, you should maybe wait for another update (the Dev is really quick afaik with integrating user-requested things, if they make sense though!).

Okay, here goes:

First Gamemode: Started playing, got addicted, thought this isn't that bad but not worth $10.

Second Gamemode: After i relised there were more gamemodes and started playing them i though it was pretty cool, you know, after the giant TITAN THAT RAMPAGES THOUGH A CITY (would be better if he had a solid body that could break stuff though)

Third Gamemode: Now this is the only reason i wrote this review, because the third gamemode is basically just a first person megaman game where you run through a world filled with Nintendo based areas (Mario, Kirby, Pokemon, etc) and you shoot at targets and shy guys..... THAT IS ♥♥♥♥ING AWESOME!!! But it would be better if there was a way to turn the timer off!

Developers pulled a Rust and changed everything. GG.

Game has been in dev limbo for 2 years now anyway, highly suggest you pass on this until a later date when progress has been made.

Final update:

This game was sold to me as a voxel conquest style shooter with destructible terrain and dynamic combat. What it is now is a pale version of 3089/Borderlands with no trace of voxel or destructible terrain in sight. Limbo hell, say far away.

First of all, remember that this review is of the game in it's prealpha state, and as such, it obviously has a more restrained outlook on things like bugs and glitches. The game has just been released to early access, and that's so that the devs can get feedback on what feels right and what they can change. Don't expect it to be a fully fleshed out game. It's still in development. There are multiple bugs and little things that could be changed with the engine (the audio is quite odd in the boss fight, there seems to be really bad collision code...), but overall, the engine is fairly well fleshed out. In my thirteen minutes of play (unfortunately enough to see pretty much the whole game), I didn't crash or have any major lag issues.

Now for the actual game design part. See, the game is all about driving your mech warriors in voxel landscapes and shooting stuff in various game modes. There will be a crafting mode in the future, where you can build levels using a voxel engine, however when i opened it I couldn't find how to build anything, so I'm assuming that the crafting mode isn't fully fleshed out yet. The voxel engine does two things mainly. It makes it so that you can destroy the terrain (always great fun, as there are nice particle effects when destroying things and also for the sheer sake of destroying), and the voxel engine also allows the player to craft. ATM, it's mainly destroying.

The main game mode is somewhat obtuse in what to do atm. You have to destroy certain objectives, in order to convert them to your side. I didn't know what these looked like until I realized that they were these small rods that you had to shoot. Once you have converted a few, the boss comes in from the sky. He's massive and certainly quite impressive, but the way he walks on the ground makes it obvious that this is an early alpha game. He somewhat floats to the highest block, and it doesn't really look realistic. Overall, the game mode is just a way for the developers to test out the engine and to demonstrate what the game might feel like when it is done.

Atm, the game doesn't feel like much. It's basically a version of Hawken where the mech handling doesn't feel as nice (If you shoot out a 1 block wide wall you can walk in there. It feels like you're a small person with a mech shooting hand). However, I can see the potential in this game. I especially liked the feeling of verticality in the main level, as I could blow my way through the various obstacles while dodging shots and firing at the boss down below. However, staying on the ground was quite glitchy as I would bounce around the various cubes (Not exactly Minecraft movement so far).

So overall, would I recommend you buy this game? No, absolutely not in the state that it's in, unless you want to help design it. It's not at the level of the Minecraft alpha, where you already have a game. It's basically a tech engine with good potential. However, if you want to help design the game and give feedback on it, I suggest you get it.

Alright I regret buying this game. I have seen any real updates or additions. If you've had the game as long as I have. You would feel as if the devs have completely forgotten about this game. I've seen one patch so far and it didn't add much at all. Perhaps people are having fun with it as it is. But compaired to the idea the video convays. The game doens't come close.Even for early access alpha standards. And with no updates in the longest time. If this game is going to redeem its value. The devs really need to get to work on this game. As of this post.I highly recommend not buying this game ANY TIME SOON. With the rate this game is going. It won't be entertainable for years. And by Entertainable I mean a game you can sink many many hours into. This game you can get bored within 30 minutes.

I have to stress this. Yes I know the game is early access. But that doesn't exccuse that fact that I have seen nearly enough contect. Please do your selfs a favor. If you're going to buy it. put it off for at least 3 years. There is no way (with the rate or progression) the game will be at all ready for a LONG time.

Bought for $1... definatly worth it. Fast pace run and gun. The play control is a little touchy for my likeing but I think thats the style they were going for.

Shooter mechanics are fluid (for its genre, more than most in this genre). Creation mode is fair, and grows easier with practice (could use more GUI).

The game has a great start! Fun. The Creative mode (which can be switched to battle-mode) helps keep this EARLY release replayable for a bit.

The developer is promising the moon on this one... from what I have seen so far... it has that stellar POTENTIAL!

"AT THIS EARLY STAGE", I am divided on whether I recommend it at over $10 (not because it isn't fun, but because there are a lot of finished $10 games). DEFINITELY get it on a great sale deal!
