We’re pleased to announce the Last Dream “Ship Challenge” Competition. Players will be ranked on the fastest game time to acquire the Ship in Last Dream. The competition ends July 31st, 2014. Players may use either the full game or demo versions of Last Dream.

Key Details: No “Reborn” games, Normal difficulty, Saving in Designated Locations.

1st Place Rewards: $75, the Last Dream Expansion, an Expansion NPC with dynamic text, an Expansion Tombstone, and a free steam key to share with a friend.

2nd Place Rewards: $50, the Last Dream Expansion, an Expansion NPC and Tombstone.

Official Contest Rules for the Last Dream “Ship Challenge” Competition

Participants shall submit a save file with the fastest game time acquiring the Ship prior to July 31st at 11:59 pm EDT.

“Acquiring the Ship” Definition:

Players in the full game and demo will be defined to have acquired the Ship when they have either:

1) Traded the two Elven Relics to the Relic Collector of Doria for the Ship.

or

2) Rescued the Ancient Hermit from the Deserted Island Cave and the King has gifted a Ship from the Royal Navy.

Once either of these two objectives has been completed, players MUST save their game via any allowable method (e.g. at a Church, via a Sleeping Bag/Tent/Cottage on the World Map, or at a Designated Portal Save in a Dungeon).

Gameplay Rules:

• Difficulty level MUST be set to “Normal”
• Saving option MUST be set to “Saving in Designated Locations”
Altered “Game Options” (e.g. difficulty, saving options, etc.) are prohibited.
• “Reborn” games are prohibited.
• Any encounter rate is allowable
• The “New Game +” feature may be utilized.
• Any party combination
• All competitors must use the Steam versions of the Last Dream demo or full game.

Competition Judges: Andrew Walker, Josh Mellon, and Mark Cope (the Creators of Last Dream) will use submitted save files to objectively determine the fastest time to acquire the ship.

Selection of a Winner: All Last Dream save files submitted prior to 11:59 EDT on July 31st to info@whitegiantrpg.com will be analyzed for fastest game time to acquire the ship. Any save files that do not meet the criteria above will be disqualified, and the remaining entries will be ordered from fastest to slowest game time to acquire the ship. The five participants with the fastest game times to acquire the ship will be awarded prizes. If multiple participants acquire the ship in the same game time (to the second), then the participant who submitted their save file first will win the tie-breaker.

Competition Prizes:

Prize Details:

Other Rules:

Geographic Area of Competition: Residents of all countries worldwide and of all states in the U.S. are allowed to participate in this competition. This contest is void where prohibited. Contests and promotions are subject to all country, federal, state, and local laws.

Start and End Dates of Competition: The competition begins May 26th, 2014 at 12:01 EDT and ends at 11:59 EDT on July 31st. Save files received after 11:59 EDT on July 31st will not be considered.

Winners Documentation: The Prize Winners for the competition can be obtained from Last Dream Community Hub on Steam on August 3rd by 11:59 EDT.

Excluded Participants: Last Dream Creators (Andrew Walker, Josh Mellon, Mark Cope) and other White Giant RPG Studios, LLC owners (Chris Moore, David Moore) are excluded from participation in the competition, as well as anyone younger than 13 years of age.

General Release of Liability: Contest winners and participants agree to defend, indemnify, release and hold White Giant RPG Studios, LLC and the Last Dream Creators harmless against any and all claims or liability arising directly or indirectly from the prizes or participation in the contest.

Agreement to Rules: By submitting a save file to info@whitegiantrpg.com you acknowledge that you are fully aware of and agree with all the terms and conditions of this competition, per the Official Contest Rules for the Last Dream “Ship Challenge” Competition.

Extra Credits, Yogscast, and Last Dream Update #2

A thoughtful Kickstarter backer (Jeff Szudzik) kindly introduced us to the Extra Credits videogame development series. We carefully study their insightful videos and were thus shocked and thrilled when, today, their Chief Developer published a highly favorable video review! Finally, a second Last Dream update has been made live. Over 20 bug fixes and improvements have been implemented based on your comments.

For those interested, here is the entire list of bugs that were fixed in this update:

1) Possible issue with the Puzzle Master puzzle count.
2) NullDark classified as both Recovery and Assist.
3) Mysterious clouds are unresponsive in "Blue and Yellow" block puzzle of the Dread Woods. Should still be active to allow for another way to reset the puzzle besides L+R.
4) Reservoir Staff incorrectly adds -25% INT state.
5) "Current game" puzzle counter isn't reset in New Game + so Puzzle Master rewards are bugged.
6) Mr. Cope's parents can become stuck and block treasure chests.
7) Experience split is not handled correctly when party members are dead.
8) Can land Airship on Riverdale and not be able to reenter.
9) New Game + bug with Daedalus where he says you've already completed the puzzle despite only having done it in a previous play through.
10) Master Fisherman's End Credits are bugged. He will talk about showing him a Leviathan based on your acquiring one, not showing it to him.
11) Moa Races End Credits are bugged. Talk about defeating the Gray Moa even though you never raced him. Possibly related to New Game +.
12) Game doesn't check if game options are altered when giving Abyss achievements.
13) Can become stuck when talking to Cid after the 3rd Tier of the Hunter's Guild if you haven't talked to Locke at all.
14) Characters can dodge Healing Herbs.
15) Blue Moa passability errors with Snow Slug area and Dvergar Secret Passage.
16) Terran Treasure Hunter achievements are not working correctly in update.
17) Tiling issue with the stairs when going to the Asgard Resistance Hideout.
18) New Game + loads very slowly on some Windows 8 computers.
19) Black Mage portrait changes at some point in the game.
20) Death animation sounds for bosses still play at full volume when muted.

Other improvements:

1) Changed how screen resolution is adjusted. Now use F5 and F6 to switch between windowed mode and full screen mode and the windowed mode resolution, respectively.
2) Z (mapped to D by default) will now act as a Fast Forward in-game.
3) Allow direct opening of the Map menu when on the World Map by holding cancel button (mapped to X by default).

Our development team is comprised of people who deeply cherish the RPGs of our childhoods.

We began developing Last Dream to be the central element of our decades-running annual RPG Tournament among physics graduates. That is, we started with the sole desire to craft an enduring game that we would personally enjoy.

As Last Dream progressed and over 50 creative individuals became involved, we realized that other people might enjoy our game as well. Now, after investing thousands of collective hours in game development and testing, and after receiving such generous support from the Kickstarter and Steam communities (thank you!!), we present you with Last Dream - the first in a trilogy.

Unless you're a JPRG junky and have nothing else to do, this game isn't going to do it for you.

Hours into the game there's no story or purpose for anything you do, the customized leveling and skill unlock systems are an interesting idea but ultimately just turn into tedious micromanagement (the skills themselves are not so unique as to deserve manual unlocking), the recipe system just makes it needlessly complicated to gear yourself (crafting is not available in every town), and doubles to make the rewards for exploration minimal at best.

It's not terrible, but it's not good. While it does have features to offer to make the game a walk in the park, the game lacks a reason to be played, and the customization options are only really useful for people seeking a minmax grind challenge through higher difficulties.

Unlike traditional JRPGs, this game fails to provide both a reason to play (via story), a direction to go in, or even a clear line of difficulty guidance (floors in a dungeon will spontaneously just be harder than others), which will likely result in simply being completely annihilated because how could you have known.

And when you see Game Over, and load up your last save, and realize you didn't save a while ago because it requires multiple steps from the menu (unless you select "save anywhere" option), you wont feel any reason to continue playing.

Disclaimer: If you're not picky about story or you value gameplay over story, then this review isn't really relevant to you.

I played a decent amount of this game, but as a gamer who likes story-driven games, it just wasn't doing it for me. Gameplay is fun, the puzzles are challenging (but not ridiculously difficult), and for a RPG Maker game, a lot of work and detail was put into it. So, there are definitely good points about this game.

The story was just mediocre. It wasn't bad. There were interesting things about it, but it got to the point where I just lost interest. I'm 47 hours in and I realized that I just don't really care about what's happening in the story. That's not a good sign. I was hoping it would get better as I progressed through it, but the story just wasn't enough to keep me going. It probably didn't help that there's ZERO women in game, unless you count a chosen party member, but they don't really have personality or a place in the story.

I'd prefer to just keep this review as "neutral" instead of negative or positive, because I wouldn't say I have negative feelings for the game. I'd just say I was disappointed with the story.

So I gave this game a few hours of my time, and I have to say I'm disappointed. I am fully aware of the possibilities and limitations that come with creating a game using RPGMaker, as I've used the program myself quite a bit, and I can tell you right away that this game isn't much more than stock resources piled onto a bland story.

There are a few interesting features, such as designing your own party, but in the end these features aren't used to their full extent, and the way it's done is very generic. Customizing stats and skills is fine in itself, but the system used here is, once again, very generic and doesn't offer much customization other than "make a good build or make five different bad ones".

Graphics are mostly, if not completely, stock, which in itself can be fine, but when the game fails to produce any other redeeming qualities I can't help but notice how I've seen the graphics many, many times before. The music feels completely random most of the time. Especially during the flashback cutscenes. It just feels like the creator didn't know what music to put there, and just randomly picked a song from a playlist.

The story... I don't get it. What's my motivation? Why am I bothering with these guys. Just telling me I met some people and trained for some time doesn't really give me much of an emotional attachment to my party. Making them all mutes doesn't help much either. I assume I want back into my own world. It's only been a year, right? Why am I doing random fetch quests for people when I should be trying to get back home? Why do I care about what happened lots and lots of years ago to some pretty funky music?

As the game is a RPGMaker game with very basic battles and graphics, it really only has story to rely on. Unfortunately the story is simply not there, or if it is, presented in a way that makes me not care at all. And this comes from a diehard RPG fan who loved a bunch of the more recent retro-styled RPGs out there.

If you're looking for a retro-RPG with a good story, this is sadly not the game for you.

I like what the makers of Last Drea have done. They have made the game an adventure, RPG while making it almost exactly like the Final Fantasy games, and I am pretty sure that they even used some of the Final Fantasy music. It has a great story line and whenever you get a vision it really brings the story to life. If I could rate this game I would give it 9.5/10. That just shows how much I am into this game. And for those who love a challenge it has an option which you can make it that u can only save in a town and the battles are sure hard sometimes. I hope you get the same enjoyment I got through this game. :D :P

Exceeded Expectations

Professional dialogue, inventive paths, compelling story development, haunting music, and challenging puzzles.

White Giant RPG requested that I share my old RPGMakerVX.net review of Last Dream, which I am happy to do. I played their early demos and bought an older version from WhiteGiantRPG.com a year ago. Now, after 100+ hours in the Last Dream world, here is my updated assessment:

A+ Mapping: You made judicious use of surrounding detail everywhere, with beautiful towns (Alfheim), majestic cities (Doria), and pleasant villages (Oakwood). Dry Gulch also feels like the travelers’ caravan that it is. Overall, very scenic and satisfying to explore.

B Ease of Play: At first, the character building felt overwhelming. It took me until my third game to obtain a full command of attribute development (for example, I didn’t initially realize I could acquire/build skills). But this will not be a stumbling block for more proficient gamers, particularly those that start with your in-game Tutorial. Plus, I see that you have since made this feature easier to command.

A Variability: The initial complexity aside, I enjoyed having the freedom to select among the eight characters, and the freedom to build them per my preference, particularly with repeated playthroughs.

A+ Dialogue: Last Dream shines in the dialogue – it feels professional and is at times quite poignant. I remain interested in the story arcs of the many NPCs, who each seem to have around 7 sets of text that change with the main storyline.

B+ Features: Wow, there is a lot packed into this game. I love the Hunter’s Guild, Fishing, Encounter Options, Cutscenes, Bestiary, Achievements… but as with the initial ease of play, there is so much included in this game (Drill, Recipes, Puzzles, Sonar, Skills, Macros, etc!) that I wasn’t initially sure what to pursue. By my third game (and playing at a higher difficulty setting), I appreciated the value derived from more of these options. Still, there is a learning curve on all these features.

A- Music: Excellent. I would listen to this music while jogging or just hanging out. I gave it an A- because, although each piece is really solid, the collective compositions are not unified, which I understand would be difficult/expensive to do. Still, you made beautiful selections and the music remains a significant part of Last Dream’s greatness.

A Puzzles: Very enjoyable. I read on your website that the Chief Designer has a PhD – it shows. I only recently managed to complete all 50… some are strikingly hard!

A+ Balancing: Last Dream is surprisingly well balanced. At first, I expected that one aspect would be better than all the others (e.g. The Hunter's Guild vs. Fishing vs. Experience Building vs. Recipes vs. Side Quests, etc.), because there are MANY things you can do in this game. Yet, each option has its strengths and place within the game. Essentially, I initially recommended breaking up Last Dream into multiple games, yet I now better appreciate what a finely-tuned experience you crafted within Last Dream.

A OVERALL: Your passion for this game is evident in the careful mapping, professional dialogue, countless features, inventive paths, compelling story development, haunting music, and (very) challenging puzzles. I stumbled upon Last Dream in its early development and still find myself enthralled with this well-designed, polished gem of a game. The later parts of Last Dream particularly exceeded my expectations – well done.
