Development

Our development team is comprised of people who deeply cherish the RPGs of our childhoods.

We began developing Last Dream to be the central element of our decades-running annual RPG Tournament among physics graduates. That is, we started with the sole desire to craft an enduring game that we would personally enjoy.

As Last Dream progressed and over 50 creative individuals became involved, we realized that other people might enjoy our game as well. Now, after investing thousands of collective hours in game development and testing, and after receiving such generous support from the Kickstarter and Steam communities (thank you!!), we present you with Last Dream - the first in a trilogy.

The Last Dream Expansion and Last Dream II are currently in development. Our progress can be viewed here: Last Dream Expansion and here: Last Dream II

I have to admit that I really hate RPG Maker games. The engine puts too many restraints on the developers, e.g. not being able to change the movement key bindings. The RPG Maker graphics are appealing, but lack uniqueness. But they convey a feeling similar to classic SNES games, which probably is the main goal of the engine.
That said, I really love Last Dream!
It is the only RPG Maker game which feels like it offers enough content for the price. The possibility to individualize each character is a great idea, but I would have preferred if they had taken it to the next level and left out character classes entirely. The story is simple, but decent enough and there is enough content to provide many hours of entertainment.
Even the price is reasonable.
If you like classic SNES RPGs, try Last Dream! Chances are you will enjoy it.

The Good:

Tons of content, with more to come (devs are currently producing an expansion). Scratches that ol' SNES Final Fantasy itch. Non linear to a degree, if that's your thing. Great stat allocation.

The Not-So-Good:

The map is monumentally awful. Balance could be better, as if you're a grinder you can quite easily become so powerful that nothing but the Superbosses (and navigating the ludicrous map) present any real challenge. Ending left me wanting, but that's likely down to taste.

Worth the purchase if you dig JRPGs, though, for sure. I've spent almost a hundred hours interacting with this thing, and only now am I finding myself bored. Looking forward to the new expansion.

if you enjoy turn based combat, rpg's, good soundtrack and a sense of adventure, and options in your video game, then this is one you don't want to miss. this game is the definition of "classic rpg" taking the best elements from old-school rpgs, mixing them with a good soundtrack, simple and polished animations and a variation of options, from the very start of the game you can choose dificulty up from simple mob spawns, save points and even dungeon save points, this also includes you being able to change your party members from the start of the game setting it to your liking. The price is also very good and definetly worth it, and if you catch it on an offert, you won't regret it ever.

People still use 8bit style games and make master pieces like this one. Glad to know not every game producers are lazy programmers, designers and writers. Amazing game, you should try it... lotsa references of other turn based RPGs. You'll have a good time.

end-game content was little bit awful, but good game nontheless. One thing that I didn´t like was the lack of mana potions, and any vendors won´t sell any of it, at least I did not find any of such vendors, if they even exist at all?
however, I did like the story, character advacement, music, etc etc... good game. Quest journal would be nice, but on the other hand, the story is quite linear, so I guess journal won´t make any difference anyhow.......

Music 4/5
Story 5/5
Player Characters 5/5
Vendors 3/5
Loot 2/5
Non-player Characters 4/5
Side Quests 3/5
Areas/Explorer 4/5
Boss Fights 4/5
End-Game Content 1/5

In overal, I will give this game 4 points out of 5, and my recommendation.
even with some flaws on it, this is one the best RPG games I ever played, period.

This game is a love letter to final fantasy 1 through 6. If you like any of those than you have to play this game. I have played for about 8 hours so far and I am really liking this and it is somewhat of a departure from Final Fantasy because it allows you to apply increases to all your stats when you level up which allows for some freedom. You have to be somewhat intelligent on how you apply the increases depending on your party and the variety is there since you can pick any combination of classes just like in Final Fantasy 1. If you want all black mages you can do that. But balance is also important. You even get an upgraded version of each class just like in Final Fantasy 1.

The references to Final Fantasy are also everywhere in this game. This game also does not reinvent the wheel or do anything all that fancy but if you yearn for the old days of Final Fantasy when things were a little more simple and grinding was the order of the day then this is the game for you.

Combat is the same as FF too. Random Encounters that go to a different "battle screen". Using strategy is sometimes important and buffing abilities are extremely important especially in boss battles. The combat is not too challenging and as long as you understand the way each class works and there strengths it is pretty easy.

This game definitly caters to a niche fan base and as such may not be the best for people that are not fond of old school JRPGs.

Most RPG maker games suck, this is a true gem! If you enjoyed final fantasy one this is a beautiful rendition of that type of game, The story is ok at best but the gameplay and party customization along with all of the great systems in this game are what keep me playing. There is a 700 page pdf file that comes with the game. You can tell that this is a labor of love and the guys who made this game really have my respect. This is a must have for anyone who enjoys rpg maker type games and/or the final fantasy series.

Length [very good]: I'm 30 hours in and only 16% done with it. There's tons of sidequests, puzzles, monster hunting, treasure hunting, achievements, crafting and other challenge modes you can take on so there is a ton of more time to put into the game. I forgot to add they've got an expansion and full-on sequel in the works.

Soundtrack [bad]: My only negative is that the music can be a little grating because certain notes are too high or off key. I don't hate it by any means but I can see it being really annoying to people who are sound sensitive. (You can turn off the music at least)

Characters [good]: You get to pick from 8 classes, multiple of the same class can be chosen, and each one has a unique purpose as well as being able to upgrade to a more advanced form. There's custom stat placement, skill trees and of course equipment to choose from.

Story [good]: I can't give a real score for this yet since I'm not too far in, but it's keeping me interested to find out more so that's a plus. As a side note- Depending on your party choices, the results of events in the story change.

Combat [good]: It's exactly like any other turn-based JRPG of old except for the macro option which makes killing trash while traveling somewhere go much faster.

Difficulty [good]: It's entirely up to you how hard or easy you want the game to be and you can change the difficulty at any time from the in-game options.

Graphics [average]: It is what it is, RPG Maker for one thing, but the content and execution is what makes RPGs so charming and the fact this game is trying to be a homage to old school games makes it justifiable.

TL;DR: The game has a lot of features older games it pays homage to didn't have, it's very customizable for beginners or experts and if you like JRPGs and have needed a fix here on Steam, this game fits the bill perfectly. (If it's on sale there's no reason not to get this, if it's not $10 is still a steal)

This game is really good, the controls take a bit of getting used to, but then the game is a blast. It offers so much variety with the combos of classes and abilities, and really grabs the style of an old JRPG like Final Fantasy.

Extreamly well done. Makes me feel like I felt when I was a kid playing JRPG's on the NES and SNES. Story is kinda what you'd expect, but different enough that it feels interesting and fresh thoughout. ALOT of side content. Battle's can be difficult if you're not prepared. Music is awesome, though battle themes can get repetitive (expected). You can screw yourself royally if you dont pay attention to what you're doin on the skillpoint screen. Comes with a HUGE manual/guide in pdf form, really awesome for completionists. take a look at my time spent in this game. I enjoyed and continue to enjoy it thoroughly.

I like this game very much. I dont have many hours but i plan to put many more into this game.
the battles are great and well paced even cooler with the macro options. But on the flip side you can walk way out of your level range without any indication and the other problem i saw fishing why only at docks seems like you should be able to fish anywhere but you cant. Other then that game is great. the fastforward button oh how i love it so

The game respects you enough to allow you to tweak every part of your experience and make it perfect. Must-buy for fans of old-school Final Fantasy games.

Getting the Deluxe Edition is highly recommended as the soundtrack is magnificent.

Exactly what I was looking for: a retro JRPG with all of the modern elements of complexity and individualization that would have made many of my old favorites (e.g. early Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Lufia games) so much more enjoyable and replayable. Cheers!

If you are a Final Fantasy fan you will love this game. it is similar to FF1 in many ways but also very unique! it pulls all the good pieces of the various FF titles and puts them together in one game! you pick your classes and when you lvl up you put the stats where YOU want them! The game offers HUGE replayability and NEW GAME+ and try different class combinations for a different experience.

Did i mention you can setup MACRO's for grinding so you dont have to spam buttons if you're trying to steal a certain item or kill a repeated pack of mobs a certain way.

I LOVE THIS GAME!

It's tough really to find a place to start with this review.

I will start by saying aside from the RTS kit graphics this is by far the best rpg maker made game I have ever played.

It captures a lot of what was good about Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger on the SNES. (It actually has some semi references to those games as well).

The combat system is not too fancy but the mechanics behind it are pretty well done. Status Effects and Conditions are really big in Last Dream you really have to pay attention to what is going on it's not your typical keep spamming attack type jrpg if you do this you will likely die.

Leveling up you choose where to put your points in terms of stats and you choose which skills to unlock as well.
If you are a fan of puzzles you definetely want this game some of them have had me banging my head on the keyboard for 30 minutes or higher.

I do not really want to go in to too much detail because I feel it might spoil some of the best aspects of this game.

I will end this by saying forget the fact it's made with rpg maker, forget that it's rts graphics. If you want to re-live your childhood with some old school jrpg feel this game is where it's at. A LOT of content, TONS of sidequest and cutscenes (which can be disabled). New game plus, reborn mode, Diffuculty level for those who like a challenge (can be changed anytime).
