City of Steam Shutdown Bonuses Event

Dear City of Steam fans,

You might have already heard that City of Steam is closing, and that's true – payment service has already been suspended, and game servers will close down for good on JANUARY 31st, 2016. It was a tough decision to make, but the browser game space is changing rapidly, we have to take this step.

We really want to thank the community for your years of support, and there are a few ways we're planning to do that:

1) All City of Steam players will receive 30,000 Electrum per day until server shutdown. There's still time to upgrade your characters to their utmost potential, and to try things you've never thought of before, be sure to enjoy!

2) You may have heard about our new title, Heroes of Skyrealm . All City of Steam players will automatically secure an exclusive in-game bonus pack for Heroes of Skyrealm at release. Just make sure to copy down your character name and server info, then we'll send you a code to help you get started on your new adventure. If you haven't checked out the previews on the Heroes of Skyrealm Facebook page yet, you are welcomed to drop by at any time!

3) Even though Heroes of Skyrealm is an independent project, and Skyrealm is its own world, the influence of the World Machine can still be felt. Meet Servo!

Forged in the heart of the Nexan Republic, this toiler is one of the 30 characters that give Heroes of Skyrealm its name. He's a new take on an old favorite, and a natural addition to any 3-character team.

From all of us at Mechanist, thank you for your loyalty, feedback, and support over the past six years. We couldn't have made Heroes of Skyrealm without you, and we hope you'll find a place in this new world!

We're Closing City of Steam Now

Dear City of Steam players,

It’s been an amazing ride. We can’t believe it’s been over six years – from the first days of early prototypes, to sharing alpha builds with a growing worldwide audience, to opening landmarks like the Refuge, the Founders’ Annex, the Vault, and Arkadia itself.

Support from our fans has guided us from the very beginning. Without you, we might never have made it through the Steam Greenlight process, which led to our widest release in 2014.

But we’re sorry to say that this chapter of The New Epoch is coming to an end. A number of factors went into this decision, the decline of Unity support in the browser is one of them – Google Chrome no longer supports NPAPI plugins like the Unity Webplayer, and Microsoft's next browser, Edge, won't either.

Suspension of payment services for City of Steam on all platforms will start on Wednesday, January 13th, 2016 (00:00AM EST, 06:00AM, CET), and full server shutdown will follow two to three weeks after that. In the meantime, though, the game will continue to run as usual.

But even though City of Steam is closing, Mechanist’s spirit of adventure is alive and well – and we encourage CoS fans to check out our upcoming mobile action RPG, Heroes of Skyrealm ( Set in an all-new world, Heroes of Skyrealm challenges players to build a team of over 25 legendary heroes to fight evil from a fully upgradeable aerial fortress.

How does having your own airship sound? Soon, you’ll be able to do just that – and with single-player missions, real-time online co-op, and a full array of PvP modes, the gameplay possibilities are nearly endless. Previews have already begun on our Facebook page, but there’s so much more to come!

To everyone who has enjoyed City of Steam over the years: thank you. We've learned a lot over the past six years about what makes MMOs work, and the Mechanist community has been a huge part of that.

And as we move on to the next adventure, we’ll always remember where we came from – and we hope you’ll join us.

If you go to the website of the game you will see that the last update to the news was almost 1 YEAR ago. The forums are overrun with spam posts made by spambots and there is no attempt being made to clean them up. Obviously, a bad sign. The sub-reddit for the game is also dead. The last posts were ages ago and no developer presence whatsoever. While the game isn't terrible, there is obviously no one left working on it. It's in the barest form of maintenance mode which is the surest sign of a death spiral for an MMO.

Edit January 22nd - And now it's officially dead. Confirmed that the game is being shutdown on the 31st of January. Pretty damn short notice.

the game will shut down on january 29th 2016

I came back to this game after a while, mainly for nostalgic reasons. My experience is rather mixed.

The environment is wonderful, the story interesting and the in-game universe has a great potential. There's many races to choose from and the way the world works is amazing. Unfortunately, this potential is unfulfilled because so far there's very little difference between the stories of various races and the game itself makes the player focus on other things (mostly PvP). The RPG element is kinda taken away because your dialogue choices don't really matter.

However, every steampunk fan should try this game. It's a great inspiration for costumes and/or steampunk props, some armor sets are kinda cool and there's not only steam guns but steam swords too! (not sure how that works but whatever) Plus the soundtrack is A+ and gives the game a nice touch.

Possibly the worst thing (or two things) is that it's pay-to-win and if something goes wrong the support won't help you because they're gone. No updates for months, no bug fixes, dead forums. Many players experience problems with loading or other things and there's no response from the devs or anyone. Some people are complaining about the auto-combat feature but it's completely optional. Turn it off.

My recommendation would go like this:
Try it. Play the game for a while and see how you like it.
But don't take it too seriously and don't use your real money on it.

+ environment and lore
+ soundtrack
+ skills animations
+ detailed weapons/armor
+ wheelie on a steambike

+/- auto-combat feature (optional)
+/- focused on PvP at higher levels

- non-existent support
- pay-to-win
- bugs, bugs, bugs

It's over. Closed. Ended. Not available. All servers shut down. I had to install the launcher and let it sit at "last known server, in Amsterdam, is not responding" for 5 minutes just to post that.

Hey Valve, why is this still in my Exploration Queue? Yeah, they said they might make a sequel someday, but this doesn't help. Just stop recommending closed MMOs.

Do I suggest this game? Yes and no... I can't say that I don't enjoy this game, Because I do. I've played it hours the past weeks. The steam theme is nice. I'd just like it to be less pay to win. Some upgrades/actions need too many stones or parts and are overpriced in the mall. One more thing.. Sadly the game has log in issues. It seems to be a main problem. Fix it!
