Reviews

“It quickly reaches those magnificent moments where you’re working out new rules on the fly, realising that if you apply previously acquired understandings you can make logical leaps and eliminate or highlight in a brand new way. Those are special moments that only very few puzzle games manage.”

Tiny little game, but fun. Finished it in about 80 minutes.
For a dollar or two I'd say it is worth the price.

Interesting puzzler. Finished in a single sitting of about an hour an a half, enjoyed every moment of it.

Not the hardest of puzzlers, but enjoyed it very much. It gently introduces new concepts to make the game more diffucult, and the puzzles grow larger as well. Where the first ones take several seconds, the last few can take up to ten minutes. Not having an undo button is logical, as mistakes are immediately made known, but when your fingers don't follow your brain (i.e. when you want to left-click and you right-click, or the other way around), this is frustrating, as you have to start the puzzle anew entirely to perfect it.

I would recommend to people who enjoy a quick challenge and puzzles in general. Otherwise, I'd steer clear of it - then again, why would you be looking at a puzzler review if you are not interested? ;)

Very fun, light puzzle game. It kept me hooked enough to stay up into the early morning trying to beat it. Well worth the money. The puzzles have a decent variety of mechanics to keep it interesting.

Really wish it had a random puzzle generator to help with replay value, but for the price you still can't go wrong.

A great take on a minesweeper style game. It does feel a bit short, though, as I was able to complete all puzzles with a perfect record in around 2 hours. There's no 'random' or generated puzzle mode. These are all pre-fabbed puzzles, so once you complete it, there's very little reason to pick it up again.

Best puzzle format I think I've ever played. The game does a great job of easing you into the rules and tricks.

Nice and relaxing puzzle game, music is all right and it makes you want to just play one more game and perfect every puzzle.

A very short puzzle game which increases in difficulty the more levels you unlock and play.

Graphics: 10/10
It shows itself in a minimalistic way with almost only 5 colours present at the screen at the same time. With this, it achieves a simple yet deceiving look.

Storyline: 1/10
It has NONE at all. Just do the puzzles and finish the game. No story to be seen here.

Sound: 10/10
The soundtrack is really ambient. You would hardly notice it due to the fact that you are concentrating so hard to complete the puzzle. But if you take the time to listen to it, it sounds very good, even for a £2 puzzle game. I am impressed by this.

Gameplay: 10/10
If you’ve played Minesweeper before, this uses the same concept, but it is a lot more forgiving and a lot more relaxing as it doesn’t put you in pressure. Other than that, it has a smooth gameplay with absolutely no lag whatsoever.

Price: 10/10
At only £1.99, this game is totally worth the price. It even comes in a bundle with 2 other games if you’re interested in getting those as well. (You save money if you get that). If not, you can wait until it goes on sale and get it for a VERY cheap price.

I recommend that you get all 3 Hexcells games: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/50074/ (That's why this review text is identical for all 3 of them.)

It's a *great* puzzle game series that strongly reminds of Microsoft Minesweeper, but not only is the grid hexagonal (meaning 3 axes instead of 2), the games go well beyond mere neighbor-field estimation.

The levels eventually get very hard, and the procedural mode in "Hexcells Infinite" that exists in addition to the hand-crafted levels all three games have is a bit too chaotic (and hard) for my personal taste - well, it's procedural, its levels are not nicely designed and organized like the other levels.

Anyway, since I wanted *more* of the easier puzzles and especially of the numbers at the grid's periphery saying something about the grid's content, I made a (very crappy) puzzler in a few hours after finishing the Hexcells games that pushes those buttons: http://dreamspace-president.com/index_crappyGames.html#StupidLittleMinesweeper

Hey, Matthew Brown, if you ever make a game like this again, I'm very likely to buy it, and I bet there's a bunch of people out there who think alike.

For those who like this kind of puzzle game, I can't recommend the Hexcells games enough.

Very good game which requires only a short time to get used to, however actually playing the game fully immerses you in to almost a new world - one of hexagons (and thank the Lord that they're not super hexagons (other game reference)). Such a simple game but was created in such a beautiful and intelligent way that you thank yourself for spending the little money that it costs to play. As people say it should be worth an hour per pound/dollar that you spend, this game is worth it on those guidelines because although I've only played a few hours, it cost me 69p and I have enjoyed this game a lot more than even some £20 games.
There's beauty in simplicity

This is what Minesweeper should have been. Basically, this game is six-sided Minesweeper, but with the guessing element completely removed. You never have to guess a single time in any of the puzzles, and you will always have enough information available to you to make the next move. It's a game of pure logic and deduction, and one that will truly test your skills in the later levels. My only complaint is that the game is pretty short, but there is also Hexcells Plus and Hexcells Infinite to play.

Highly recommended if you even remotely enjoyed Minesweeper.

Hexcells uses similar logical reasoning skills to Minesweeper, but without the timed aspect. Great puzzle game but way too short.

This is a brilliant puzzle game with a great ambient feel to it. The interface and music would almost lull you to sleep if your mind wasn't working to seek out the next path to completion. Definitely recommended.

This is probably the best puzzle game I have ever played. The music and sound effects are spot-on fantastic, the puzzles are lovingly and painstakingly crafted, and the difficulty progression is just perfect from one puzzle to the next.

The mechanics are similar to Minesweeper and if you find yourself clicking the wrong mouse button (like me), you can change the button configuration from the Input tab of the configuration menu when you first start the game.

I have now bought this game twice at full price (I bought again when released on Steam) and I don't regret it in the slightest. This game is worth well more than the $3 asking price.

Great puzzle game. As others have mentioned, its minesweeper, with some added gameplay elements. Relaxing music, no time limit, and a very zen like vibe going thru-out.

Acheivement hunters, its an easy 100%. Took me 2 hours.

Only drawback is its short, so try to find it on sale.
