"So Hashbrick do you recommend Alpha Kimori Episode 1?"

"Absolutely!" is what I would have said if it didn't have so many things wrong with it. At this point it is nothing more than a "Well if you like RPGs and don't mind a huge let down...be my guest"

Let's go down the list of everything that just makes this a disappointment in any regard.

CONS

Short - 5-7hrs depending on how hard you grind there isn't much going for it. The story has a hard time taking off and when you are done you are still wondering what exactly went on in that short time frame. This is exactly why RPGs were never made in episode form originally, it is hard to tell a meaningful story in a short period of time.

Soundtrack - Get ready to hear the same damn music over and over. One of the songs actually sounds like watching a citcom where it hits the high notes and out comes the actors running down the stairs with their names appearing. It is a very odd taste of music and you will groan everytime you hear it even with the short episode.

Lack of Strategy - The only time you will ever use "skills" is on boss fights to quickly defeat them, other than that the whole game is cruise control of spamming just attack and watching ♥♥♥♥ die. There is no weaknesses or status effects just a minor attack up, attack down system.

Redone & Overused Areas - Get ready to go to the same damn areas you go through in the beginning of the game with the exception of the final area that is new everything is rehashed for every quest and side quest. You litteraly do not venture more than a woods right next to your town and nothing more. There is times where you wish they'd just wipe the enemies clean and just let you run instead of running into lvl 1 ♥♥♥♥ at lvl 32 just cause its the very first area but you need to do quest X here for the 10th time.

Story - Extremely weak story of a love triangle (or lack there of) between a brain dead, can't think for myself female that is obbsessed with the main character to the point it makes you sick. Then this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ likes the chick you could care less about while you hunt for another chick on the other faction to realize that you could care less about your own morals that were forced on you by your crazy ♥♥♥ parents who have no problem to just kill you off if you fail your exam?!?! Oh ya and something about some alpha ship that came from Earth to this planet, with two factions; one that wants to get back to Earth and one that wants to just stay and make the best of it, who then made these Kimori human like things but not considered humans who consider themselves gods, while 7 souls of angels that turn into some kinda gem thing implanted in 7 different characters that can call these angel things in battle, while the other faction can turn into enemies and the reason to kill monsters on the planet is to harness their ki energy for....reasons. Confused yet? Good don't expect anything else when it ends there is nothing if anything explained in this crazy mindless plot. (It is suppose to sound like a run-on because of how short the episode is and how much they jam in your throat)

Items That Don't Matter - Throw your items in the garbage, you will never use them if you are on par with the levels you should be. As for weapons and armor you will get hand outs during the story no point of ever using the stores ever...

Lack of world building - There is no detail in most the areas you will travel through, just plain grass, caves, one town and a small one with little to nothing in it.

Cutscenes - Not only will you see the same cutscene cut up in different places over 10 times in different points in the game as they ram it home that "this is the defining moment of change!" You will also be greeted to ingame cutscenes that require npc movement that takes so long and you can't move until its complete. The graduation ceremony you watch 3 npcs walk up take their document and go back to their place, for what, what point is there making the player wait a long ♥♥♥ time for no gain, no dialog, just movement... Seems like they just did one flash back and cut it up cause it was too much work.

PROS

Graphics - looks good for a 2D RPG, models are nicely detailed.

Battle Engine - While not having to actually use it much, it is overall a well built battle engine turn based menu system.

Character Building - While being short it does a ok job at detailing some of the characters and giving them a background, this is probably the shining moment in the game and the only shining moment. There are some cliched character of course but for the most part the reasons and ambitions are clearly detailed throughout the short episode.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you like a RPG with a meaty story, look elsewhere. If you don't mind grinding mindlessly and go through the same areas over and over again for a little piece of pie (the story or lack thereof) then by all means take the plunge. I can't recommend this game based on the obvious issues with this game there is no meat for the lover of RPGs and in retrospect if I had known it was going to be what it was I probably would have not pushed myself through the entire episode.

2/10 - extremely average run of the mill RPG with little to no reason to actually need to experience it.

I wish I could recommend this game. It's clearly not just another crappy RPGM game: the devs put effort into the art and story, and it shows (I played through the whole thing mainly because the story seemed promising). Unfortunately, it fails at being a game. As other reviewers have noted, the characters' ability sets are all made with the same cookie cutter, and battle is extremely repetitive with no tactical aspect: attack, rinse, and repeat.

Maybe get it on sale if you're an avid JRPG fan; otherwise, avoid.

Boring, simplistic and tedious.
This game has fights that are constantly the same with no degree of difficulty or even the slightest chance of failure. The storyline can be guessed right from the start. This game consists of walking around in a RPG Maker world (which can be fun, if you like it old-school), but consists of nothing more then 'fetch and retrieve'-quests. No change, no challenge, no story. I am glad I got this game from a Humble bundle, because I would not have forgiven myself the purchase otherwise.

Awesome game. While it was too short, I enjoyed it a lot. Monsters quickly became cannon fodder, which is fine for me, but the bosses were delicious. I like the characters and cannot wait for Episode 2.

In short: This game is boring.
The music is repetitive and there is no challenge in the combat system.

The graphics are nice and i'm curious about the story, but i won't continue to play this game because of how boring the combats are. You can win every fight by repeatedly pressing one button and without looking at the screen.

This was quite an enjoyable little game that sure left me waning to play the next one to see where the story goes. The game starts off really slowly with you basically left utterly confused for some time (main character doesn't want to kill but you have to kill for exp?). But anyways even though the game lacks the comfort for players to play, the story picks up and is actually quite interesting.

CRITICAL HIT
CRITICAL HIT
CRITICAL HIT
The game became too easy the moment you started getting a million critical hits. To be honest, monster grinding would be even more boring without the critical hits. However the critical hits amount surely did astound me as it seems like its 100% critical hit count against monsters. There were a couple of "boss" like fights but really weren't too hard due to your large health and "mana" pools.
One of the most annoying things about the game that I found were the monster walking paths. It literally seemed as if the monsters were spazzing with some spazzing towards you. It was really annoying and unpredictable so I couldn't even avoid those useless low exp giving monsters. They also should have put more teleporters to different regions so I wouldn't have to worry about those pesky spazzers.

Overall nice short game.
Rating: 7.9/10

Also, don't criticize me for my tastes, but I genuinely enjoyed the theme song BiRD by the oh so famous robot singer.

It's a pretty fun RPG with a decent story that's hard to put down.

The good: The combat is fun, the skills are nice to look at. The story is easy to get into, and the characters are interesting.

The bad: Movement is slow. I mean really, really slow. You walk along a long path with no ability to speed it up. You have to wait for the NPC to leave the screen before you can move, and there's no way to skip anything such as cutscenes or fastforward things like battle animations.

The ugly: No matter what you do in battle, if you're scripted to lose, you're going to lose. Even if you one shot the enemy, once the battle is done it'll pretend like you lost the battle, making it feel like there's no point to winning them. The finale brings up an interesting aspect of the story, namely the ability to (DON'T READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS) harvest the gems of enemies and add their strength to your own (DON'T READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS) but there is no mechanic in game to do that. You're also greeted with a strength +100 gem, but it's the only one you get and it's impossible to get more.

All in all, this game is worth $5 or even $10, but for a five hour game it's not really worth $15. Get it on sale if you can, because there's a part 2 that steam needs to add (and a part 3 they need to make supposedly) that will eat your money away if you buy it at full price. It's not worth $45 ($30 for both parts for a 12 hour game) for however many hours, but it's a fun game for a one and done.

Alpha Kimori is a great indie RPG that starts out simply enough, but provides surprising depth in its themes and story. The character interaction is mostly great, and while there are a few minor complaints, the game will keep you hooked until the end. It’s worth it to finish the game as well, because the final battle and cutscene afterward are both worth the price of admission alone. The game runs a little on the short side, but each hour is packed with story, and will leave you wanting more. I’m literally on edge to find out what happens next. 10/10

Alpha Kimori is a game with an interesting story. The gameplay itself is that of a simple RPG. The difficulty isn't high and in general you won't find any great challenge in this game. The main point of the game IS the story, resulting in a short game with characters you can still really care about.
If I had to describe it, I'd say it feels the most like a visual novel with RPG elements. All in all, the game is for a somewhat niche group, but it's awesome all the same. If you're looking for a good story, be sure to check this game out!

The story of this game is really awesome and the mapping is well made.
Also you will probably like the soundtrack if you like vocaloid. :)
If you calculate the price for all 3 chapters of the game it would be around 30€. I needed 4.8 hours to finish the first episode, so the full trilogy should take around 15 hours to play through.
People that like RPG Maker games should definitely play it!

This game is a good atempt at making a game. It has problems like all games, moving around is hard, fighting is sorta lame but fun. That aside, this is a pretty decent game. Not really worth 11 bucks CD but if you enjoy japenese poin n click adventures like this is worth it twice over. But hey, best title music of all games i've played.

Took me around 4 and a half hours to beat this episode and thats only cause i rushed thru the final part cause i wanted to know what happened and didn't know i was at the end already.

First off, I do like the artistic side of the game and the story line is a more new one to me so it was good to feel like you are engaging in some new. But the game itself kinda ruined that with the playability of it. There was numerous things that I didn't like:
1st: Event processing. Half the time I wanted to explore the map after an event, but then its like, "nope, teleport back to town".
2nd: The level system & Equipment. Played for 2 hours, am level 20's, and have not gotten any new weapons or armor (I bought the tunic and bandana at the start). The only weapon that is of use costs 15000$ and you will never be able to afford that for quite some time. I had like 6k or so when I stopped. There is no "cool new weapons or armors", your strength is only from leveling up, so you never feel like you are actually becoming powerful. It feels more gringfest then anythhing else.
3rd: Skills. Super unoriginal skills. Each person has their own keyword for their skill (as far as I got there was God, Metal, and Angel). So for example your first couple skills for the main character is "God Sword, God Focus, God Blast". Also with that, everyone has the same skills. Each person has a heal, a KI restore, and a Power attack. Since everyone's health and KI grows at the same rate and everyone basically has the same skills it feels like all the party members are the same. It's like playing with duplicates of the main character.
4th: There were some holes in the story as well. The biggest one for me is the part where you have to go recieve a canister and then you have to go get a special KI crystal to trade (which was a huge pain to walk back and forth with). The leader tells you that he will pass you for the graduation exam for doing it and you don't have to kill any KI creatures. This is where the problem happens with story. It is basically nearly impossible to avoid enemies. They have sporadic pathing and some are really fast. So you know, you kill like 100 KI creatures with the amount of traveling you have to do. I tried avoiding them at first thinking that if you killed one it might affect the story, but nope, apparenlty you can just slaughter them all, and still be crying about how you are trying to be peaceful and not kill them.
5th: Health & Items: Basically you only level up to face the bosses. All enemies once you level up enough you will be able to 2 hit them with normal attacks only. They only deal 20-30 (this is being level 20 range) damage and you have 1106 health. You want to just ignore them all, but then its like, "oh this boss might actually kill me because he deals 200" You basically gring to fight bosses. You also collect KI crystals to use to restore health and what not. They heal by 10% 25% and 100%, (from what I have seen) and you get an abundance of them. I do a long sidequest and he is like here is 3 10% health crystals. With your health pool and how fast you level up, your health will never get low enough to actually start using them. All they do is just sit in your inventory.
So all in all with story and artwork I would give it a 4/10.

It's good, but I believe you have to have an affinity for classic JRPGs from the 16-bit era to really enjoy it, otherwise it'll just feel tedious a lot of the time.

The story isn't bad, the characters have a bit of depth and development to them, and the sprite work and art design looks nice. As an RPG, its battle system is just standard basic attack, magic, and item commands selected from a menu, with an option to defend and recover HP/MP, but doesn't offer anything beyond that. Enemies show up in the field and battles can be avoided for the most part, which is a step up from having to deal with completely random battles.

The game could have stood to have a wider variety of music tracks. You'll be hearing the same upbeat town theme a lot of the time, which will sometimes end up clashing with the tone of the story when things take on a more serious mood. The first episode is also really short. Taking my time with it and walking away from it every so often, I still managed to get through it in under 10 hours, and a good portion of the game has a lot of padding from battling and backtracking.

Overall, it offers enough where I could recommend it if you really like older console RPGs and can get it for cheap during a sale.

I got this game a few weeks ago and I have to say even for an RPG Maker game this one is awesome to play through. I don't know how far I am yet, but to me this is a hard game to put down once you start playing it. I can't wait until Episode 2 comes out on Steam so I can play it.

I don't know why the RPGmaker haters are hating on this game, but for once I'm going to say this: if you don't like RPG Maker games...then why are you here in the first place?

"...a brightly futuristic world with a style all its own."

Alpha Kimori is set 50 years after Earth was invaded by aliens and the Alpha (God's ship) transported the human survivors and seven Angel-class RICA battle mechs to the planet Kimori. There, the humans divided into two warring factions: the Bidarians and the Jinrians. The Bidarians want to forcibly reclaim Earth and exploit the Ki crystals in Kimori's flora and fauna to fuel their civilian and military technology. They've even found a way to infuse humans with these crystals to create superhuman warriors called Kimorians, who pilot battle RICAs. By contrast, the Jinrians believe that Kimori is the promised land and their rightful home now. They've severed their attachments to Earth and prefer to commune with nature. Their elite warriors have developed the ability to transmutate into the apex predators of the natural world.

Episode 1 introduces us to a young Bidarian warrior named Rick who questions the Bidarian cause and the life he's been groomed to follow since birth. He doesn't enjoy destroying and exploiting Kimori's ecosystem, but reluctantly follows the dutiful path his high-ranking parents have laid out for him. Rick's best friend Vanessa doesn't quite understand why Rick resists the Bidarian way, and Rick's rival Daygan sees Rick's wavering doubt as cowardice. Further complicating Rick's predicament is the constant memory of the winged Jinrian girl who planted a seed of doubt in his head when he was a child. Of course, people and the status quo are never what they seem, and Rick soon finds himself in a myriad of personal and social conflicts that challenge everything he's ever been taught.

The story presented in Episode 1 may not wow gamers over its 5 or so hour duration, but it does provide a solid setup for future episodes. I became invested in both the playable and non-playable characters in this saga and want to know what happens next to them (e.g., how will the love triangle play out?), as well as what the new characters I'll meet in future episodes will be like. The potential for sideswiping plot twists and red herrings is wide open, and I hope it's realized.

Speaking of potential, Sherman3D's experience at crafting in-game art, particularly sprites, is readily apparent in the aesthetics. The title screen is one of the most striking I've seen in an RPG Maker game, and the Japanese vocal song played over it is pretty sweet, even if it's not mixed as evenly as the in-game music. The in-game music is catchy 16-bit style music, but it has a richer sound format than most. I particularly liked the Bidari town theme, which reminded me a bit of Phantasy Star II's music. My only issue is that I'd prefer a wider variety of tunes.

Speaking of Phantasy Star, the in-game graphics really make me nostalgic for the classic Phantasy Star games, especially the graphics for the town of Bidari. It is like a Phantasy Star II town on steroids. The original sprites are all large and impeccably detailed, especially those of the mechs. I also loved the creativity of the enemy creatures. There is also a good bit of custom tilework, but some dungeons (like the caves) do not completely veil the game's RPG Maker roots. Astute players will also notice a few stock icons peppered throughout the game and the Aveyond II-style menu interface. Another minor complaint is that although character designs are solid, I don't like that some key female characters have midriff-exposing outfits. I'm sorry, but no self-respecting female warrior should have her vital organs unprotected. Also, if you have an older PC, the highly customized graphics could cause some slowdown, particularly the special effects during battles. However, when all is said and done, those are minor complaints in light of the fact that Sherman3D created a brightly futuristic world with a style all its own that stands out from the pack.

Considering how dynamic Alpha Kimori aims to be, the limitations RPG Maker imposes upon it are most apparent in the battle system. Battles are visually impressive, but they're still the basic RPG Maker turn-based fare. During battles is where I really would have liked to see Sherman3D realize their greater vision with a proprietary engine. This game's spiritual predecessors, Phantasy Star IV and Xenogears, had two of the more dynamic, combo-driven, turn-based battle engines out there and I wonder if Alpha Kimori wanted some of that spice in its formula. At the very least, a few multi-person skill combinations like in Lilly and Sasha: Curse of the Immortals would have given more of that Phantasy Star IV feel. Maybe some factor to make the few mech battles feel different from on-foot battles like in Xenogears would have added variety as well.

When push comes to shove, I can live without those bells and whistles; but I cannot live without an escape option during battles. When my characters are low on health and/or I just don't want to fight because even normal battles run long, I want to be able to escape. It would also be nice because hostile areas are overrun by creatures. Sure, they're much easier to avoid than they seem, but there are still too many of them out there. It's fortunate that players can get away with minimal grinding, because fighting every battle in sight would be a tedious nightmare. I definitely think the number of encounters could have been cut in half to keep things more manageable.

It doesn't matters that progression requires a lot of backtracking through previously trawled areas, where getting into scuffles with low level monsters proves a nuisance. I also was unable to procure items to teleport me between dungeons and towns, and my lazy carcass does not want to always have to hoof it back to town, especially since there is no dash button.

I know it sounds like I've bagged on Alpha Kimori here and there, but it's got it where it counts, and every complaint I have can be remedied. I enjoyed the 5 hours I spent with this game and look forward to Episode 2, which should reportedly drop in early 2012. Alpha Kimori could also be a light snack to tide over North American players until Xenoblade for the Wii hits stores. Alpha Kimori may not be Phantasy Star V or Xenogears II, but it may be that fantasy/sci-fi hybrid JRPG you're itching for.

Wonderful JRPG game , instead of the traditional rpgs which force you to grind for useless xp to level up or find nonsense loot etc This one focuses on doing that via a good story. Thank god there are no random encounters you can move about peacefully . Nice anime style graphics suit the game well.
The game has some lovely music as well , looking forward to episode 2

This game just isn't up to par on any of the qualities of a traditional JRPG. It has a poor script, limited skills in battle, exceptionally limited equipment, minimal monster variety, and only a couple of locations. A single play-through takes around four hours, but you'll find yourself tiring of the repetitive battles (you basically just use the same skill on each character every round of every fight) even before that.
