Acerca deste jogo

Residue is a story-driven 2D platform adventure in which you control three characters with different abilities, exploring an abandoned excavation site in the remains of the Aral Sea in present-day Uzbekistan. Once the fourth largest lake in the world, the Aral Sea is now an arid wasteland, a victim of decades of Soviet cotton irrigation. To some, it is the prime example for humanity to stay out of nature's business. To others, it's a world waiting to be saved.

  • Real-world setting: The vanished Aral Sea in Central Asia, peppered with artifacts of an all too real history.
  • A world imagined: Eerily detailed, vibrant HD art, closely based on photos from the Aral Sea and filled with secrets.
  • Something to say: Experience a non-violent, thought-provoking, fully voiced story concerning the cost of saving worlds, without giving up control.
  • Exploration: Explore an interconnected game world using three characters with very different abilities.
  • Variety, variety, variety: From climbing to exploring to diving to navigating pitch-black corridors, integrating new gameplay elements at every turn.
  • Captivating Soundtrack: With many vocal tracks and an ethnic vibe, composed and produced by Joel Bille

From every disaster, new heroes emerge. This is the story of a suicide mission, an impossible attempt at restoring the Aral Sea. In the late 90's, a disgraced Russian oil tycoon found an underground secret that could save the dry basin. The sea would not be changed. But for the team assembled to work the miracle, life would never be the same again. Ten years later, the survivors' paths begin to converge. Something is pulling them back to the Aral Sea.

See every side of the story
Residue has a story itching to be told. We have done it in the way that only video games can – by putting you in the middle of the action at all times. Resisting the temptation of a clear-cut protagonist, Residue carefully juggles you to let you see every side of the story, alternating between three characters with very different abilities - each one able to reach places the others can't - and very different ambitions. At times they help each other, at times they are in opposition. Sometimes both. Nobody said things weren't complicated.
Did we mention Residue is crazy about the little details? While the main story may take you between two to three hours to complete, you can search for hours for all the little hints and references to real world events, as well as dozens of hidden collectibles and all-round secret content.

Always in control
As seen in our previous, much smaller game They Breathe, The Working Parts are devoted to telling stories in new ways while keeping interactivity at the forefront. That's why Residue isn't a point-and-click, but rather a visceral platform adventure where you're always in control, whether you're monkeying around the ship graveyard or diving through underground tunnels, navigating old Jumagul through dark corridors with a flickering flashlight, or ascending the side of the gigantic stranded drillship with Nikolai's makeshift grappling hook. Around every corner, Residue will show you something new.

Very slow paced 2D platformer. Main feature is the hand drawn artstyle but that's not enough to keep me playing a very basic game.

Very compelling and original story, with an interesting way of telling it, through playing three different characters that explore the bottom of a dried up ocean, each one with their own gameplay style.

It's a bit clunky, tho, and really short, so I'd advise to pick it up on sale if you're not sure. Still, I found it enjoyable.

Wander around an uninteresting side-scrolling environment and randomly trigger checkpoints to advance the constantly-playing cutscenes. I really wanted to like the story, as it's told in a very low-key and off-kilter sort of way, but the platforming is pretty awful (it's generally linear, but it's not always clear which way you can actually go, thus leading to a lot of random jumping and action-button spamming in the hopes you get lucky). Of the three "main" characters you control, one of them is basically the Out of This World guy without a gun, one of them has a grappling hook that's responsible for most of the "welp, time to start guessing randomly" moments, and one is quite likely the single most irritating-to-play-as character in the history of platformers - an old fart who has no run, no jump, and lurches about the screen at a snail's pace, leaving me thoroughly disinclined to explore the maps because the thought of having to backtrack at 5 miles an hour was just THAT off-putting.

Moreover, the voice-acting is simply AWFUL - the actress who plays Ostrovska sounds like the most bored person in the history of ennui, and to actually submit these lines as a "finished product" is utterly contemptuous to the devs (who, in turn, are utterly contemptuous of their paying customers for either not immediately demanding a re-take or finding a new actress who actually knows what she's doing). I've heard some bad, bad voice acting, but at least the vast majority of bad voice actors are TRYING.

It's a neat idea, and I think it'd work well as a non-interactive movie. But as a game, this doesn't work.

I enjoyed this game. No, it was not the best game I ever played, but I didn't expect it to be. This game was different, something new. The artwork was very different than any game I have played before. I liked that change. This game is not for everyone. If you can get this game on sale it is worth getting. The game only takes around 3 hours to complete. So in conclusion, if you're up for something new check out this Swedish Indie game!

I'm struggling with how to rate this one. This game has a lot of bad things within, but untapped potential is definitely there.

The art direction is fine. In fact, the backgrounds are much more detailed than they initially let on. Rust, age, damage, the wear of passing time and weather -- the backgrounds show all of these factors and are quite impressive. The story and location are very intriguing. In fact, the story was the only thing that really kept me going.

The gameplay has potential, but its execution is not good at all. Each character has a special ability - flashlight, grapling hook, or acrobatics - but the ways they're used are odd and feel forced. Physics for the grapling hook are horrible. And some areas give you no clue as to where you need to go. One area in particular forced me to look up a YouTube playthrough.

The story, as intriguing as it was, has a very confusing ending. I can't say why without spoiling it; but the inconsistency between the ending, how the ending happens, and how the characters behave all come together to result in a jumbled, confused mess. The voice acting ranges from well done for some characters to abysmal for others. I was thrilled when one doomed character had nothing else to say because the voice acting was so wooden and monotone. Some of the dialog was horrible as well.

Even with those negatives, I don't reget buying this game; so I'm giving this a thumbs up but with a lot of caveats. "Residue" has a ton of potential but it never follows through. I didn't find myself wishing for the game to end as soon as possible like I did with "They Breathe", (I know, I'm in the minority on that one.) The story, minus the incredibly confusing ending, had me hooked throughout the game. If The Working Parts can make another game with a similarly intriguing story and location while cleaning up the gameplay and finding better voice actors, I think that game could do very well. "Residue" let enough potential sneak through that I want to see what The Working Parts gives us next.

Don´t take this as a review and more like a comment with very little review-esque aspects.

I would never believe in my life, that is possible to fall asleep while playing a game. Yes this happened.
After boring half an hour of playing, a just passed out for couple minutes. This is most boring game i ever played. It might be good or even better then good after some time, but i have no willpower to continue. I tried, i really did, but no thanks.

I like games that take storytelling above gameplay, but story have to be compelling to make this work. I had no interest in story, voice acting was annoying, and for moving around places i can play other and better games. Visuals and sound also meh.

This might be harsh from me, and it will be best if you form your own opinion.
So i just milk trading cards out of this and Sayonara!

Confusing story telling, bad translation, tiny blurred reading fonts, terrible gameplay, no options for adjusting sound volume.

You basically just blindly side-scroll characters until they trigger checkpoints.

Also, 2 hours to complete + 7 more hours waiting for all the cards to drop.

Overall, I did not enjoy it.

The only thing that saves this game is perhaps the artwork. Oh, and particularly for me, fact that I bought it in a bundle with 7 other games @ €2.49 (basically €0.35 per game).

The Aral Sea gets a lot less screen time than other industrial disaster areas, probably because it's hard to set a first person shooter there. But it's nonetheless one of the more fascinating/horrifying spots on the planet. And this is the Aral Sea as myth, in a sense. The quest to bring back the lost water that comes to consume the efforts of several people who are driven to try and return what is gone.

And in the sense of storyline and lore, and the immersive quality of its soundtrack and the distinctive voices of the characters, Residue is fantastic. In terms of actual gameplay though, it can be a bit rough... as a platformer some of the areas leave a bit to be desired, and the swimming is odd, but it's well checkpointed and doesn't really punish you for failure unless you miss the chance to torment some seagulls for achievements. Each of the characters moves quite uniquely (don't expect the old man to go bounding around the landscape for example) which makes for varied play. And the game isn't really long enough for any of its faults to get really grating, and it's regularly switching characters and throwing bits of lore at you which keeps things moving.

Don't expect a tight platforming experience. Do expect a good story.

Here is a suggestion. Watch a documentary about the Aral Sea distaster and donate 2 Dollars/Euros to charity instead of getting this mess. You might like the art style, but the simple fact is that the gameplay is slow, annoying and its painful limitations will kill any amount of immersion you might hope to get from this.

The art was pretty good and the story seemed decent, but I got to a certain point where the cluncky controls held me back too much. It's too bad because watching the video the game seemed really promising. I would definately play another game from this developer, unfortunately I just can't recommend this one.

An allright game, with a few perks up its sleeve and a few thing I would have done differently.

But let's get down to what's good and what's not about this title:

PROS

  • Immersive, rich atmosphere.
  • Solid story, altho sometimes it does get a bit confusing about who's who.
  • Loads and loads of in-game lore, about both the location and the characters.
  • Beautiful soundtrack.
  • Gameplay variety (each character has his own, peculiar, set of abilities).
  • Rather in-depth character design, as each of them works for his very own purpose and reasons.

CONS

  • The controls do feel a bit clunky at times.
  • Character sprites are not particularly polished or good looking. (The backgrounds are usually ok, however)
  • You'll likely get stuck figuring out where to go next a few times.
  • Possibly not the most intuitive swiming system ever.

All in all, it's well worth its value and deserving of a play or two. I did manage to finish it twice (as far as I have found out, there are at least two endings and i wanted to see them both), and I can honestly say I wouldn't consider the time as wasted.

It certaintly is a peculiar game, and will feel frustrating at times (damn grappling hook...), but I have no double thoughts on reccomending it.

Residue offers a very compelling story and passable gameplay. If you like story driven games with a genuine human element you should pick this up.

In Residue you mostly play as three different characters with different abilities: an athletic young boy, an old man with a flashlight and a middle-aged man with a grappling hook. All these characters interact and interweave with each other in very interesting ways, in both gameplay and story. I'm being intentionally vague about the story because I think it's good to approach this game with a clean slate - but it all revolves around a real horribly polluted lake in Asia. The story is confusing at times but everything comes together beautifully at the end. The story is what will keep you playing because the gameplay is nothing special, and when you're stuck as the old man it can become boring - the other characters offer some nice platforming. The graphics aren't breathtaking or unique but they fit the atmosphere of the game perfectly. The voice acting is pretty solid throughout and the music is spot on. The game is short but I don't hold that against it, it tells its story concisely and effectively, without any padding or fluff.

Residue offers a truly exotic experience through unique, beautifully drawn graphics, excellent audio composition of the ambiance sounds and music, and, last but not least, a story that makes you ponder upon fundamental aspects of life (though without giving you a headache over it).

You'll be exploring and discovering disturbing bits and pieces of information related to the story of the game. The game doesn't have one of those boring tutorials, but instead relies on simple, intuitive puzzles to get you started. It will also pique your curiosity until you absolutely have to find out what's going on.

Don't be fooled by the apparently slow pace of the game! There are scary things out there and some might make you jump when you bump into them :)

All in all, I definitely recommend this game if you're looking for something fresh and different to try out.

so long as you know you're buying a narrative adventure game and not a platformer, and don't mind your games a little rough around the edges at times, you'll be happy. This game has a unique story and it's told well. The core gameplay mechanics like swimming, climbing, and grappling can be frustrating at times but progression is still pretty smooth and you can finish the game within 2 hours.

I got this game during Steam Auction, and I think it's an overlooked game that deserves more attention.
It's a story driven platformer that has a serious topic. It's very atmospheric, having a nice sound track and a unique art style.

I've read briefly about the environmental disaster at Aral Sea before, and it serves as a lesson that human actions can have catastrophic consequences. It's very admirable that the developer is raising awareness about it. For that reason alone, I would recommend playing this game.

Now just for some nitpicking. While the game has a unique aesthetic, the animation is plain horrible. The art also blends everything together, which makes it sometimes hard to tell where solid walls and ledges are. One of the character you control is an old man, which makes sense that he can only walk slowly, but it's not very fun gameplay-wise. Not to spoil the ending, but I don't think that's how physics and biology work.
