What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Since previewing Secret Ponchos on the show floor at PAX East, we've received an overwhelming amount of requests to bring Secret Ponchos to the PC in addition to the PS4. We promised we would do our best and find a way to take on the additional platform and to make a long story short - here it is! Early Access makes it all possible, and has 2 major benefits:

1) It helps us fund development of a PC version so we can bring it to PC gamers

2) Early Access gives us access to a strong Beta community of actual gamers – ideal for finding that extra bit of quality in a multi-player combat game. It will help us observe how player strategy can evolve beyond our internal testing, allowing us to refine and polish. It's truly great that the resulting quality will benefit all platforms, making a stronger experience for everyone, PC and PS4 gamers alike.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Secret Ponchos will be in Early Access until the full PC version is ready. As Early Access progresses the content will resemble it's final version more and more. We are aiming to release on PC within the range of FALL 2014, or Q1 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We aim to test and polish as many of our characters, levels and modes as possible during Early Access - no holding back! Some content will be released at different stages of the Early Access program (i.e. the Matador character, Ranch Map, and a few game modes) but the plan is that during the course of Early Access, most content will be available.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Secret Ponchos is currently in a solid Alpha state. We've completed a content pass on the majority of the outlaws abilities, animations, and maps to a point where people can play the game against each other the way its intended.

One area we want to be upfront with our community that may be challenging during Early Access, is Matchmaking. The population will start out small, and ramp up. During this time the developers will support the community, and host suggested play sessions at 12pm and 8pm PST everyday. Players can play Secret Ponchos whenever they like, but if they ever have trouble with matchmaking, they can rely on those times for more community saturation.

We are very interested in using Early Access to see how players form strategies to compete and cooperate online, and then continuing to balance based on what we learn.

A few things to take note of :
  • The game is still in development, there will be bugs, and content like animations/FX will be changing as they are being polished as we push to finalization

  • Please be aware that Match History and created outlaws will be wiped at certain points during early access, as we make changes to the underlying sysetms

  • Matchmaking the first little while may be a bit bumpy until the population starts growing and building momentum. Along with the Devs, Our Early access Community are going to be the first players on Secret Ponchos! Just a heads-up and that we might have to ask for your patience as we go through the initial growing pains!

So taking those notes into consideration that the game is still in development, we hope its going to be a great experience to get your hands on it early, and it will help us identify the quirks of the game!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If you get on Secret Ponchos soon on Early Access, you'll end up getting it at a lower price then those who wait for the full version. Even if you miss one of our Early Access discounts, for a limited time we are offering our Early Stage Early access supporters a free gift key for a friend, as a thank you from our team! Early Access offers savings on Secret Ponchos, because we appreciate that you will be putting up with our growing pains as we test and learn. This will not only give you a chance to get your hands on the game a little early but also give you a gift for a friend.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We believe Early Access should be about direct interaction with the Dev Team, so we've created an environment with no barriers between you and the Devs.

-Everyday any player on Secret Ponchos can enter our "Secret Ponchos Group Chat" and have access to chat with members of the Dev team there, to discuss the game, or just chill. We always enter during the 8 pm PST Playsession, but also pop in randomly throughout the day to checkin with the community.

- Every day our devs play Secret Ponchos with the community at the designated play times, our player names have _SBM at the end!

This has been so much fun for us, and we've learned a ton interacting with the community. Please join us! If you're not sure about the game, try joining the Secret Ponchos chat Group at 8 pm PST any day and see for your self!”

SUGGESTED PLAYTIMES : 3pm & 8pm PST: Secret Ponchos is a newly released Early Access multi-player title, with a small population that is currently ramping up. To provide everyone opportunities for solid play sessions, we have created suggested play-times to saturate the community population. You are welcome to play Secret Ponchos whenever you like, but these times are there for you if you encounter any troubles as we ramp up our population. The Dev team will also join in at these hours, and we've been having a great time playing with the community :)

Secret Ponchos creates a new compelling format of combat. It's quick-twitch action gaming, that is fast paced, fun and competitively addictive. Presenting combat from an overhead isometric view dramatically changes the feel of the Fighting Game and Team Shooter genres. You have a 360 degree view of the action unfolding around you, and gameplay is driven by both what you choose to do, and how well you can control timing and spacing for quick-twitch battles. Compete to survive in 1 vs 1 duels, free-for-all mode, or get your friends together for gang combat against rivals (up to 8 players).

Create your outlaw from a dynamic set of western characters, each with its own weapon types and different combat styles. As you gun down other players you will define your legacy as you increase your notoriety with each kill. But watch out – as the price on your head increases, it becomes a more valuable target, and others will be gunning for you in this Wild West setting.

In a nutshell Secret Ponchos is an isometric action-based PvP fighting game, taking place in a stylish Spaghetti Western universe.

Key Features

5 Unique Outlaws: Each outlaw with its own sense of depth and combat strengths. They play as different as they look from one another.

Line of Sight: Take cover behind the environment to break line-of-sight between you and enemies. When breaking line-of-sight you will disappear from your enemies view, allowing you to ambush, flank, or take a moment to reload and regroup.

Combat Modes : Team based, and individual combat modes. 2-8 Players supported. Play 1v1 intense duels, or team shootouts supporting 2v2 , 4v4 and even 8 Player FFA matches. Modes available in early access can be seen in the Early Access Schedule (above).

Local PvP Coop/SplitScreen : Have a friend over, and use split screen to either play against each other or cooperatively against other teams online.
*Splitscreen PC is disabled in the current version of Early Access, but it will be supported as an upcoming feature

Persistent Characters & Upgrades: As you gun down opponents the game tracks your characters match history and bounties you have collected. Unlock perks, skins, and reputation classes as you earn notoriety and the bounty on your own head rises.

Controller & Keyboard/Mouse Now Supported

Secret Ponchos is fundamentally a fighting game at its’ heart, so we recommend a controller for the best experience (PS4 DS4, Xbox 360 windows / XbONE windows controller or equivalent). However, due to popular requests from the Early Access community we have added Keyboard/Mouse support!

Early Access the Way it Should be - Devs Fully Accessible for the Community

To us the real magic and benefit behind purchasing a game on Early Access, is being able to communicate with the development team while things have an opportunity to be shaped. The Secret Ponchos dev team is proud to have eliminated the barriers between the community and themselves - anyone in the Steam community can reach out to the Devs directly. This communication is unique, and it is a big reason to get the game on Early Access instead of the final release.
- The Switchblade Monkeys team plays the game every day at 8 pm PST with the community
- You can chat with the Devs everyday on the steam group chat during daily play sessions, to communicate feedback/experiences, or just hang out
- Dev team responds to discussion and community posts daily, there is no Public Relations barrier

Features Available in Current Version of Early Access Secret Ponchos

(Throughout Early Access we will be rotating testing on game modes)
  • 5 Unique Outlaws : Killer, Kid Red, The Deserter, Phantom Poncho, and the newly added Matador
  • 8 Player Free-For-All Shootout Mode
  • Team Domination Mode : 2 vs 2 / 4 vs 4
  • Friend Invites / team play support
  • persistent Character, Reputation system, bounty Points, Level ups, and perk assignment
  • Match history & stat tracking
  • 4 Maps : Saloon, TrainWreck, Graveyard, and the newly added Ranch

Moving forward in Early Access, Features & Content to come

  • Custom Game Mode – create a custom game with friends, or use unique configurations of players such as 3 vs 1
  • In-game voice chat
  • Leaderboards
  • Steam Achievements
  • Localization for other languages
  • There are other game modes we are experimenting with that we hope to give the Early Access community a glimpse of so as to help us by providing feedback

Could be great, but currently isn't.

I've played the PS4 release and had a blast, but was unable to play the PC version due to a lack of other players online. I'm quite sure this game will be heaps amounts of fun when it's finished. Unfortunately, nobody knows when that'll be.

With the various unexplained delays in development in mind, I'd say: buy it, but not in Early Access.
Or save a couple of bucks by buying it now, knowing you'll need to wait a long time to play it.

Early Access Review
Secret Ponchos is an extremely addicting and fun indie game, don't let my Steam hours in this game fool you I have been playing this game for hours on end on the PS4 simply because I have more friends who play on that console.

Secret Ponchos is a very unique game, it has an awesome art style, the gameplay is flawless (I sometimes forget that Im playing an Early Access game), the idea is breathtakingly original, and the community is one of the best you'll ever find. You can easily chat with the developers on Steam almost anytime on the Discussion Boards or by simply adding them to your friends list and on Twitch by attending one of their weekly streams, usually held on Saturdays.

The game offers a variety of characters called "outlaws", each with a different set of skills, characteristics, and weapons, my personal favorite being Kid Red, simply because of his speed and fire rate. Kid Red is a very fast character, he is not extremely strong but he makes up for that lack of strength with his speed and rate of fire, I wouldn't really describe him as a spray and pray character but honestly that is usually my tactic when taking on other Outlaws as Kid Red. Kid Red Carries two pistols and sticks of Dynamite, his pistols are very fast and deal an ok amount of damage while his dynamite sticks, although tricky to use, deal great damage and are extremely usefull in battle. Second up is The Phantom Poncho, The Phantom is that character that all Outlaws have nightmares about at night when they are all snug in their beds of hay. The Phantom is a well balanced character, he is very strong and lethal at certain distances, his quick dash ability makes it easy to jump him in and out of battle quickly so that you can deal as much damage to other players as possible while also evading taking any damage yourself. The Phantom carries a shotgun and a whip, his shotgun deals great damage and his whip causes his foes to stumble around slowly for a short period of time. Next up we have The Deserter. Now this guy is a brute in every sense, he is huge, he has a crazy amount of health, he deals alot of damage, and to top that off he can heal himself! So what's the catch, if he's so great whats the point in playing as the other Outlaws? While The Deserter is pretty much a tank, he is very very slow, it is very easy for all the other outlaws to catch up to him and you'll probably end up dealing with many of them at close quarters because your speed allows for them to quickly catch up to you and for them to quickly run away if you begin to cause them too much damage. The Deserter carries a Rifle and a medkit, the rifle deals a great amount of damage and gives you a good amount of range while the medkit is simply used to patch up your wounds. Now we have a classic character, The Killer. Killer is a character that I feel is based on all those Badasses we see in old school Western films. He is an older outlaw that takes some practice getting used to but can be very lethal if used properly. Killer has an average speed and can make his away around the map just fine. Killer carries a revolver that is very lethal at the right range and a Hunter Knife that isnt exactly very strong but allows for you to finish the job if your foes are able to dodge a few bullets. Finally we have The Matador. Now the Matador is one of the trickiest characters to use, but also one of the most fun to play with, she is very fast and very lethal when used properly. The Matador really only does significant damage at very close quarters, She carries three Banderillas, which are basically like colorful harpoons you can throw at your enemies from a pretty close range, but she is very lethal with her cape and sword. The Matador is a pretty fast character that can quickly appear near you and just go to town using her sword and cape combo and then quickly find her way out of battle to regain stamina. The Matador is able to at times go invisible and sneak her way out of a battle or come up behind you when you least expect it. Although she is very cool and strong she is also very hard to use and would probably take a more experienced player to use her at her full potential. I know that there are two new characters but I am yet to try them out simply because I don't feel like spending 5 dollars on a new character.

All in all the developers have done an amazing job at balancing the game so that no matter what Outlaw you choose to play as you have as much of an opportunity to kill your foes as they do to kill you.

My only complaint about this game would be what I mentioned earlier about the new characters being dropped in as five dollar DLC's.

This game.. Its fricken Amazing. If you want to be the badass, you play this game. Wild Western Themed with Intense gameplay. Your enemies arn't Flies, They're people, you can't just squash them, They go down with a fight. You may think this game is 2ez4u, but trust me, try it, and you will think differently. This game is the one that you come to when there is nothing to play, the MEGA DOWNFALL is that, its community is dead, there is only about 12 people on. I sat on that game, for 20 minutes on computer, and there was not a single player. On PS4 its alive with a community. We just need more players and you will realise that this game is fun, and not some stoopid game that no one plays. We need just 1 thing to push it up to the surface, and reach 100players at the least, so we can show people this game is awesome!
So lets notify our friends, to tell their friends to tell their friends, to get this game..

This wont really be a review more like a comment

the combat is smoothe but can take some time to get used to for some people
the characters are really cool i love the art work on them it makes me think of Gorillaz i think its because they dont really have any eye pupils. now the characters personally i like Kid Red with his dual Pistols and dynamite
and the music and sounds in the game are also very well done. there is some stuff that i dont like one is that if your in a lobby and your waiting for somebody to join you that can take hours to get in a game with someone because almost nobody is playing the game and if your not active in the lobby you will get kicked from the lobby. its crazy that it took me 13h to get to rank Renegade and now when i played it again when people were actually playing the game it only took me about 2-3h to get to rank Drifter one rank away from Renegade if just there were people playing the game more days of the week then just Saturday when the devs play it and stream it on twitch it would be so much more fun and not have to wait for like half a day to get in a game with someone. but its still such a great game so ill give this game an 9/10 it would be a 10/10 if it was not so hard to get in a game with someone. and i know its not the devs fault that almost nobody is playing this awesome game but still :/

great game, and great mechanics. One problem i have with it is that its so hard to get a game. I beleive that it should be released for free atleast for a while to get more people in the community. Im not saying that to be chear either because i already bought the game lol. I just want a larger more thriving community.

Interesting mechanics that focuses on the parts of western movies I always thought was cool. Not the duel at the end, but the drag-out shootouts that often occurred.

A bigger player base

Possibly more progression and unlocks mixed with more characters

As of March 19, 2015, there are no online players. I understand that you can kinda go to some official forums, find some people and maybe schedule the game with them, but if you just want to buy it and play - you can't. Offline mode is just a dummy killing mode. I played for about an hour and dropped it. Absolutely no fun in this at the moment.

Great Cowboy style game!

If you Like good ol' shootouts, this is your game!

I played Secret Ponchos mostly the ps4 version though

This is an intense, frantic, fast and somewhat tactical Western shooter.

Love the art style, western theme and the fluid combat.

Must have with friends.

Highly recommended.

Here's the thing. NOBODY is playing this game, and because there is no bot match options, that means you'll never get to play it either. Wasted money. Looks like it could be fun, but there are no players, hence no game. It's not exactly the creators' fault, but there's nothing here to enjoy because of that.

This is such a piece of gem that hasn't been discovered by steam and PC users. I've only played it a couple times when it wasn't even support mouse in this game. But still, the game experience attracted me to wait for its development and the release of its full potential. The only problem this game is facing is not having too many players at the moment. This doesn't mean that the game is dead since it also runs on consoles. Plus, I've contacted the development team and they told me that the game is about to be fully launched into steam, which means a huge boost of population coming soon.

When the game gets out of early access, this is definitely a worthy buy if the population of the game can maintain at a stable amount. The combat system and the graphics are very good, style of the game is nice and etc. Only one thing I've not that satisfied was there's only 2v2 available. But I believe they will put more modes into the game.

Secret Ponchos is a top-down shooter that looks great, plays great, and has a nice multiplayer. The game has 4 characters in total in the current version of the game with only a few maps to play in, a practice mode, and 2 multiplayer modes. and I'm pretty sure they will add more as time goes on, but this early version (first public version) of the game and it feels great and my purchase is in good hands. From what i can see there will be single-player, split screen gameplay, and maybe coop. But at the moment, if you won't be satisfied with only multiplayer, i'd advise to wait a month or two, but if you don't mind it then go right ahead and get it, it doesn't seem that buggy and fun to play honestly. Plus the art style and the music are really awesome in this game that gives you a feeling of the old west in a cartoon-ish way. Also, these guys are 'good guys devs' , they have PS4 Dual Shock 4 Support for the game on PC. Massive plus.

Will update when the coop mode / split-screen mode is out, and when the KB/M controls are out.

UPDATE: From what the developers are saying, the 'Coop' is team vs. team multiplayer, there is no coop where you and your friend play against AI in a horde mode or single-player. That's really bad and false advertising if that is actually the case.

The developers see 'coop' as a competitive team vs. team multiplayer as the main definition of the term 'coop' , and such, they do not have the coop that we know as player vs. AI, but they also said that they are not rulling that out, at the moment they are focusing on the multiplayer side of things until launch and may add a singleplayer to the game with a probability of adding team vs. AI.

Devs took the advice and feedback, and will hopefully remove the coop tag from the store page, and will update when it's actually removed (It's removed :) ). So when they do actually add coop, first of all that would be great, secondly then they would add the coop tag in the game's store page. Hurray for polite and constructive criticism.
