EBF4: Minor Bug Fixes

Hey guys, I updated EBF4 with some fixes to a few issues:

• Error Logging has been added (ErrorLog file in installation folder records errors)
• Fixed game crashing if the user has no audio devices (hopefully)
• Fixed game crashing if Meow files have been damaged (should use Flash cookies instead, hopefully)
• Fixed Sand Dune's status effect at max level
• Some credits, links, and other bits of text updated

I tried again to add the Steam Overlay. I got it working but it had all sorts of weird side-effects, so I think I'll keep it disabled. Sorry about that.

Awesome sense of humor. Classic early final fantasy battle formula. Endearing characters. Cool Plot. Varied skills, elements, items and battle mechanics. The world map is divided into screens which you navigate sector by sector and then connect shortcuts together once you clear areas. An impressively well designed game. One thing to keep in mind however is that this game is combat heavy, I wish there was more dialogue and plot lines because those are what makes the game memorable. Playing this makes me wish they improve on the plot in the next installment, and I wish they released the previous game in the series on steam for a low cost, but apparently the dev made those available drm free online from what I heard so I might check em out. Great achievements and there is a lot of hours you can sink into here if you play epic mode and go into the hardcore area after you beat the game and do endless waves and whatnot. A great pick for classic jrpg fans.

I've been playing the EBF series since I was a kid, and this one by far is the best

+ Awesome bosses
+ Interesting story
+ Hilarious dialogue
+ Great music (you get the game soundtrack free too :D )
+ References everywhere
+ Great combat system (Good 'ol turn based combat)
+ Tons of equipment, both clothes and weapons
+ Easy to navigate UI

+/- Block Puzzles
+/- Grinding and Backtrack

- May be a little confusing for new players, but you can get used to it (especially the inventory)

Definitely one of my favourite games of all time. ( and its cheap for the hours of gameplay and fun you can get with it)

TL;DR: A well done JRPG styled game, with a focus on adjusting your gear and tactics for each group and boss to hit weaknesses and exploit status effects. Requires a bit of strategy for optional things, but no too deep if you just want to enjoy it.

I've actually played all the EBF's so far, and you don't need to play the others to play this one. Technically, you can play it for free on the website, minus some features, but the creator has done some amazing work on this title, so he deserves the money if you want to purchase it.

Epic Battle Fantasy has always been about adjusting your tactics to your current enemies, and 4 is no different. The game boils down classic turn based combat into a purely fun formula. Each battle, even bosses, you can run from at will, so if you find new enemies you can scan them, then flee to adjust your gear if you like, or just hammer on through if you can. Most enemies can be beaten by using gear with no downsides and the proper elements, but obviously you will get much better results, especially against bosses and larger enemies, if you adjust your gear to hit their weaknesses. Unlike most JRPGs, status effects actually matter alot in the game, and alot of them work well in conjunction. One of the best combos is the darkness status effect decreases stats over time, and increases weakness to holy...and the holy status effect reduces the other stats over time, and increases weakness to dark. This leads to combos, such as having an accessory that gives the darkness-only debuff to your weapons, and using that against dark enemies so they receive even more holy damage. The game is all about finding those neat combos and useful effects, and using them well.

The story is bare bones, but it doesn't need to be too epic (Despite the name), the summary from 3 to 4 as told in the intro is 'the heroes saved the world, so they thought they were entitled to everyones stuff, so they took it...that made people mad, insert new heroine'. The game makes light of typical JRPG tropes, without being too caustic. It also introduces new elements as you run into them, so it avoids any sort of tutorial. Sidequests are nothing more than gather materials, give to NPC.

The game has many things you can do to improve your characters besides levelling, optional skills that you can only give to one character, upgrading weapons/armor (of which there are plenty), accessories, permanent stat boosting items that can be hoarded through numerous NG+s, etc. While you can go through it on easy, the game does reserve the boss achievements only for beating them on the highest difficulty, which is an effort no matter when you do it. The optional area, Battle Mountain, is even tougher for it, as the enemies level up with you, so you have to rely on strategy (and maybe some stat boosting items) to win. Still, every group of enemies is unique in structure, and the difficulty ramps up well, a very well designed curve for the game. There is some backtracking as you gain new items, to collect old stuff, but you don't feel too put upon to do so.

Overall, I highly reccomend this game if you like a good turn based RPG that requires you to think about how to handle each encounter, without getting into a mindless slog through weak enemies.
