What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As a small team, Early Access is a great way for us to... well... get the game into your hands early! We'll be able to get important gameplay feedback to make sure it's as fun as it can be, and at the same time polish any rough edges, add much more content, and get the game ready for final launch!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It will be in Early Access until we're ready to release it. We're anticipating at least a few months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have much more content, more skills, additional missions, new monsters, etc. We also expect to get further feedback during Early Access that will help us determine what you want to see in the final game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Intel HD Graphics - NOT SUPPORTED
Windows XP - NOT SUPPORTED
Single-player mode is not yet available in Early Access, but will be added for the final launch.

Stability and bugs: There are some rough edges and the game may crash on occasion. However, it's already very playable thanks to early alpha testing, and we're absolutely looking for your feedback to make sure it's as good as it can be. We're very passionate and will be online pretty much 24/7 to gather any concerns or bug reports you have, in order to fix the problems and update the game as quickly as possible.

Gameplay content: There are several different game modes available already to keep you entertained. Most of the skills are done, and we're working on adding more throughout Early Access. You can advance through the full 25 ranks in each of the 8 playable classes, though there's still more work to be done on each class. If story is your thing, there are two primary mission storylines with four missions each, along with numerous bosses and lots of enemies. Most of the weapons and powerups have also been implemented. Needless to say, we feel there's already a lot of content to enjoy!

We really love this game and are/will do anything that's necessary for our Early Access and -- eventually -- the full launch to be a success.

If you have any questions, suggestions on bugs, please do report. :)

Currently in early access you can advance your character, play multiplayer game in sessions with all 8 classes and try to survive for 1h in random encounters.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We are offering some great discounts and bundles during Early Access, so by purchasing early you're definitely getting a great deal. The price will be higher at launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're looking for YOU to provide as much feedback and bug reports as you can! We want The Red Solstice to be one of the best co-op/multiplayer games on Steam, and we'll need YOUR help to get it there. Feel free to ask us any questions on the Steam forums, our Facebook page, Twitter or wherever else you want. We'll also schedule frequent play sessions and special events with the development team, so keep your eye out!”

The red solstice 3.02. We got updatez!

There have been complaints about de-sync problems in the game, so we have been digging through netcode a bit again. Few problematic areas have been identified and reworked in a much neater way. Namely, update information regarding marine death, revive and ailment grants have been reworked as separate packages. Code for detonating explosives has also been reworked and optimized. These changes should both prevent the desync issue and reduce the network load.
We are aware of some additional problematic parts of the netcode, most pressing ones being connected with the synchronization of boss monster behavior and damage. We are still working on those and hope to have them fixed in the near future. In the meantime, if you notice any de-syncs please let us know. Any information that would allow us to pinpoint when exactly the problems happen is very valuable.

It has also been noticed that some updates ago, game experienced a drop in a general frame rate. Some time has been spent profiling for bottlenecks in the code and several has been identified and fixed. Users testing the version so far report a considerable improvement in that area. It is worth noting though that few users have been reporting performance drops on the final waves. Again, please let us know if and under what circumstances you experience any problems, so we can better identify and fix them.

While profiling for performance drops, it has been noticed that loading of certain resource files from the disk caused major performance problems, specially noticeable issue was with the boss monsters, where game would noticeably stall waiting for the sound resources to load. Same issue was noticeable at the beginning of the game where certain objects and textures were not loaded in time and were displayed as black or white squares. In order to combat that, a preloaded system was introduced. It will upon game start immediately begin loading certain resources and keep them in the working memory for as long as the game is running. This should make the game run much more smoothly and with much fewer bugs caused by resources not being loaded in time. It could increase the game's memory footprint, so you might choose not to use it (or use it only partially) if you are low on RAM as it is. In the Options menu you can choose which types of files you wish the preloader to load. Please note that it is still an experimental feature, so if you encounter problems, please try playing with different preloader settings (game needs to be restarted for preloader features to be turned off), and let us know about your results.

You should also now be able properly select default HUD options for monster and item names display from the HUD tab of the options menu.

The way game calculates damage has been a bit problematic in the past, so it has been changed, with percentage modifiers now being applied last, after the value modifiers. This new, in our opinion more logical way of calculating might have an impact on some skills and weapons. There might be adjustments in the future to keep the gameplay balanced.

There is a problem with game lobbies we have hoped we managed to solve with this update, but turns out it is still present. It has to do with the workarounds we were forced to apply in order to make full 8 man lobbies visible from the "games in progress" list. It manifests with some users entering a lobby but not being to connect or see other players. It has been noted that re-creating a lobby fixes the issue. We apologies for leaving this issue and will handle it as soon as we can.

On a more positive note, I can report that much work has been done on the singleplayer mode, with some new features being implemented, and first missions being made. Some of our users who have made special contribution, either by contributing financially or by promoting and testing the game will quite soon be given the opportunity to participate in early singleplayer testing.

Have fun!

The red solstice 2.99 update. Now with integrated voice chat, new GUI, statistics and more bugfixes

This is our first singleplayer screenshot!

It took us a bit longer then usual to get this official patch ready as a lot of our time goes into working on singleplayer campaign, but finally it's here.

New GUI is now in a stage where where it can finally be called an official new feature. It will probably go through some additional improvements as we gather your feedback, but it should be more intuitive and functional then the old one.

After successfully running the evil santa holiday leaderboard, we decided to make some more. Statistics panel in your multiplayer menu will no longer show "work in progress" but will be loaded with actual data. First column will show your own personal best score and second column will show best score any player has achieved.
You can go through leaderboards in more detail by opening the following link
Please note that leaderboards could at some point prior to release get reset.

With this update we also introduce the integrated voice chat. It works in a "push to talk" style, You will need to bind a new key for push to talk in options menu. You might also need to set voice volume also in the options menu. On the game setup menu, in game and on the end game menu you will now find icons next to player names allowing you to mute their voice chat. They will also indicate when a person is talking.

As requested a while ago, you will now also be able to automatically mute music by clicking mute music icon. It will be displayed in the left upper corner of most menus. It can also be found in game in the upper right corner after pressing escape.

Explosive items (barrels, fillers) will now explode after a random timer (about 0.8 seconds or so) if they take instant 100 or more points of damage.

All monsters of same type will no longer all be born equal. They will now have size variation of up to 20%.

Notable tweaks and bugfixes with this update include:

  • ailment prevention/resistance should now work properly
  • VIP will not be able to get any ailments any longer, health regeneration also increased from 2 to 3
  • MERCSarmor regeneration reduced from 3 to 1
  • 2 Kers should no longer spawn on wave 9 mission
  • sniper will no longer revert from hollow to piercing on normal mode
  • insurgents 3 will spawn evac mission
  • energizer buff description changed
  • you can select gender now in server lobby
  • you cannot change your loadout if you are ready
  • added circle for safety beacon showing the safety radius when mouse is over

Be warned marines! It's February and snatchers are very... frisky.

Game IS Like a more Polished Starcraft Survive Mod and If you enjoy thoese you would be well pleased with the game. The Largest draw back is FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THERES NEVER ANYONE ON!!! Thus making it unplayable. Also the learning curve is rathar brutal but that while intimadating that can be overcome with preservernce but one questions if it is worth the effort not to mention 20$ to do so.

Excellent game.

One of the best squad/co-op, isometric shooters I've played. In it's current early access form, it offers several large maps with randomized mission pools and initial spawn locations; there's a huge amount of replayability. Players are offered an array of different marine classes to choose from--ranging from heavy weapons and armor, medics, squad support and demolition specializations--each class type has a very distinct play style and role. Higher difficulties in-game absolutely stress teamwork and good communication, along with requiring a healthy range of different marine classes.

The intensity, atmosphere and sound design of the game create an unforgiving environment that only a marine of the future would deserve. A simple mistake can take a great game session from "winning" to KIA in the blink of an eye--this is something I don't see often in other games--and The Red Solstice does it beautifully.

If you enjoyed games like Fallout Tactics, the Dawn of War II series or any of the other isometric/tactical classics--I would highly recommend checking out The Red Solstice!

This has to be the most awesome Early Access game I've ever played. I love the feel of it - I have a few hours playtime for NOTD as a WC3 mod and as a SC2 mod and I have to say I like this "incarnation" of it the most. At over 300+ hours in this game, I don't think I'll be stopping my playtime anytime soon!

I honestly can't compare it to Alien Swarm (way too many hours played) or to NOTD (maybe 30 hrs played) or to any other "type" of game this is. I love that the learning curve is steep and challenging. I love that you have to learn how to move and run and be situationally aware. And I love that I can play with 7 other people. I love that there's no DLC (and hoping there won't ever be any), and I definitely love that the devs are awesome and play games with you and are open to constructive criticism as well.

Anyway, I'm gushing lol...but this really has been the most engaged I've been in a game since Dawn of War I and II.

Thanks Ironward and Green (for getting me the game <3) :D

The playerbase has fallen below the critical level needed to sustain the 8-man game lobbies, and little seems to bring them back.

There's also no single player mode, leaving players nothing to do if they cannot find a lobby.

I can not recommend this game right now.

This game is great, you start out with little to no idea what to do, you die, sometimes you might get saved, sometimes you don't.
You earn EXP and it means something, from new weapons and classes to small increases to damage and movement speed.
You have a lot of fun dying and dying again.

The downfall is for any of this to take place you need to have other people online to play with, And even right after patch, you will be lucky to get 6/8 lobby filled. As it stands I can not recommend picking this game up unless it is on sale or it is fully released, they complete single player, or they add NPC's that do more than follow you, because no one is playing it, and I know this review is kinda self defeating, but it is the truth.

** Early Acess Review as of 12-20-2014**

8 Player Co-OP. If your a fan of the War3 mod or the SC2 where teamwork is key to survive the game then look no futher. The game is fun and addictive but has a moderate learning curve. The grind for skills isn't that bad since most of the major skill a player would use in any classes could be attain in 5-6 games depending on ability to play the game.

*Playing mode* There are as 2 maps playable and a 3rd one in testing. This is all for CO-OP.
There is no single player at this moment but should be added but no time table for it.
To me this game primary focus is the CO-OP aspect to create a growing community and hope for an editor to come out to provide user created content soon!!

You can ask your questions here and I will try to answer them correctly to the best of my ability.

The developers are active and particpate with the community on daily bases and patches come frequent enough with fixes and new content.

The community with is still growing but are open to new people to joining everyday. You will meet people all over the world with one goal in common to kill zombies and spray lead till they stop moving.

*****TLDR*****

Pro-- Good game, Growing community, Responsive Developers, CO-OP fun.

Con-- Growing community, Lack of Single Player for some people atm, Moderate learning curve

*note*
I play this game for about 700hrs so my POV is over the progress from the start of the game till now.

Ask questions if you like.

I found this game by searching for the multi-player co-op tags on steam. If you're looking for that kind of experience, and like challenging games, then this game is for you. They are reportedly working on a single player mode, but cooperative-multiplayer is where the heart of this game is.

The game IS challenging. If you are playing at the correct difficulty for your team, you will lose more often then you will win.

Even though it's early access, the game is very playable. They've had some buggy patches but they tend to fix them pretty quick. The devs are on a fast-release cycle and they listen to the community as to what is and isn't working, what's fun and isn't fun, and they participate in the forums.

Now that the game is more stable, the dev's have been focusing on adding more content (maps, bosses, missions, skills, etc) which is keeping the game fresh and challenging.

If you can get this game on sale, or money isn't a big deal, I'd definitely recommend the early access version. If you are on a tight budget, you may want to wait for release. I have ~500hours on record so far for a $20 game. So I'm very happy with the value I'm getting.

When you're first starting out, the game is really hard even on the easiest difficulty setting. I HIGHLY recommend reading the player guides if you want to get any good at this game. Once you know what you're doing and have a coordinated team, beating the game on easy and normal difficulty is a piece of cake. In that case, you might want to try hard or nightmare difficulty, both of which are extremely brtual.

The community here is quite small. The veterans are quite welcoming if you're willing to learn, follow directions and get teamspeak. You don't have to talk on TS if you don't want to. As long as you can hear everyone else, then it's okay.

I want to tell you guys this game is a good one, which it is there's no bugs that I've seen yet. It's challenging and it reminds me of Night of the dead from Warcraft 3 custom games, but I wish it would be more like swat aftermath :( anyway I am writing this review mainly to tell you that its dead there's usually around 3 people online now a days.. so buy at your own risk.

Oh jeez where to start? At first this game was very difficult for myself and others to play before steam. The Devs are actually not just active, but even play along with players! Amazing that they do their own testing and are actually willing to listen to players when they have something to say about certain things.

1 - This game has completely topped my list.
2 - I've quit nearly every other game because of this one being so addicting.
3 - If you're looking for a game that gives you reason to come home to play something, THIS IS YOUR GAME.

Best way to get in a group even for newer players - wait around, keep in mind that it is a smaller player base, but there will be a game popping up, or even hop in the Teamspeak 3 server with us! ts.game-com.de - We're always looking to help out newer players and to get the number of people higher!

Wanting to see more people in this game, would be great! Community is awesome!

Steep learning curve, but it can be done!

Keep up the good work guys! :]

The Red Solstice is brutal and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's rare to have a game that gives a real sense of accomplishment for completion these days. For the most part, you will fail and fail often. But having those games where everyone works together to pull it off is supremely rewarding.

All i can say is that this game kicked my ♥♥♥! :) though thats what i hear is its "thing" its meant to be hard.. and they did a good job at that.. I wouldnt play it online with people i dont know, or with a buddy, but if you have 4-8 buddies online you can coordinate with, it would be a great tactical top-down shooter..

Im going to not put it on recommendation for the fact that you do need a pre-set group.. not because its a bad game, but just because it will be hard for a casual player to hop in and out

This game is epic, and only in early access.

Ignore the really bad voice acting at the start, and jump in. At first you'll be thinking what the hecks going on, not enough ammo, getting swarmed by the creeps and dying fast, but stick with it for a couple of rounds multiplayer, and buddy up to a vet and a whole world will open up to you.

It has good progression after the initial steep learning start, and enough different builds of skills, classes and gear to keep you going.

This game is true co-op, you go it alone you die, you need your team mates, and they need you.

As with all multiplayer games there are a group of jerks out there who aren't worth playing with, but just avoid them and find a good squad to run with.

Mechanics are a sci-fi diablo esq, but with much more options in build and pick-upable equipment, including changing fire modes on rifle (single, burst, full auto)

The Red Solstice is a third person real time co-op game. They plan to have a single player campaign but it is not playable yet. I have to say that generally I do not like co-op shoot em up games but this has me hooked. Co-op is where it is at. In RS you play one marine in a squad, you pick the powersuit you want, which offers different powers and abilities, then you go kick butt. There are serious strategy elements and team work is critical to success. So much fun.

Pros: The most engaged player community I have ever seen. Very responsive developers. For early access, this game is polished and feels like it could be on the market already. You get to play a space marine! Replayability is huge as bosses and scenarios change even if you play the same map repeatedly.

Cons: It is early access, so there are still balancing issues that are being worked out, but not many. There are a few bugs here and here but nothing game breaking. The player community is small but seems to be growing. This game does have a learning curve, but most people help out new players which is nice. If you dont use team speak or communicate much it might be hard to fully enjoy a co-op game. If you don't have an issue communicating then that isnt really a con. Also, AdAstra is always hitting basic lockers but what can you do right? I am just kidding on that last one.

I have been following this game for months now and its evolution from its early days on steam has been profound. I love playing it currently and I cant wait to see what it looks like when they finally are ready for market. It's a hidden gem, if you are on the fence, buy it and I bet you will be glad you did.

A very good tactical action coop game, set in a hardcore world where you won't survive without a leader who knows what he's doing (or if you throw grenades on a nuclear warhead).
The early access already features a lot of content, and they're constantly adding more while balancing the game, plus it will feature a solo campaign.
If you liked maps like Night of the Dead in Warcraft 3, get it !
