What the developers have to say:

Why Early access?
We're still not satisfied with the improvements with the engine to feel that it is ready for primetime. Therefore we put the game out to Early Access so more people can play and report any bugs. Also we are still doing script work which will occasionally break save files.

What's missing?
Steamworks integration isn't complete so achievements are not recorded.
Waiting on achievement icons
New translation still needs to be inserted”

About This Game

... on that blindingly bright day ...
... on that very day of winter ...

This is a story of disease and suffering; of medication and adverse effects; of thoracotomy scars and cellular poisons; of the living who cannot help but to die and of the dying who cannot help but to live; of a resting place other than "on 7F" or "at home".

This is a story of so many things.

But most of all ...

This is the story
of a girl whose heart was standing still
and a boy whose breath was being stolen away,
both of whom die.

This is my first VN, and on the moment i started reading it, i directly loved it.

The story, it directly started giving me the feels.
It's about a girl, whose heart was standing still
And about a boy whose breath was being stolen away, both of whom die.

The music, is just awesome! It totally fits this VN!
And what do i have to say about the voice acting? It's more then awesome!

When i'll finish this novel, i'll just read it again!
It's just that good.

I really recommend this VN. Read it and i'll promise you, you'll like it :)

First, don't expect this to be a game. There's no interaction, no choices to make, nothing to do except read and press the space bar to progress through the story.

Saying that, this is a really good visual novel. There are two stories. The first takes places after the second. If you want to do them chronologically, start with the second then the first. However, in my opinion, the stories work better if you go through them the other way.

It needs to be said that there's a trigger warning for suicide in these stories. So if that bothers you, you may want to pass this over. If not, I highly recommend downloading and completing both stories.

Note this review is only for Narcissu not Narcissu: Side 2nd

I'm usually not one to write (or rather type) up a review but this time I'll make an exception.
WARNING : This may sound similar to a review to that of an Anime, due to the fact it's a Visual novel.

Plot/Story : 9/10
Animation/Design : 7.5/10
Audio/Soundtrack : 9/10

Plot/Story
Taken from the 'About this Game' section
This is a story of disease and suffering; of medication and adverse effects; of thoracotomy scars and cellular poisons; of the living who cannot help but to die and of the dying who cannot help but to live; of a resting place other than "on 7F" or "at home".

Animation/Design
I believe the animation was quite well done for a 2007 game, although the Visual Novel includes little to none actual movements by the characters.

Audio/Soundtrack
I believe the soundtrack went well with the Visual Novel all together. The soundtrack really goes well with the story, I can't really say anything bad about it.

Review Conclusion
Narcissu is overall a great Visual Novel, I strongly recommend those who are interested in Visual Novels, I greatly enjoyed it, the storyline is amazing and well thought and the fact the main characters have little time left to live only makes it all the more emotional and heart-breaking. The Visual Novel is just a MUST in your library.

I truely love this game! It's one extremely depressing visual novel though! As soon as the game starts it displays suicide statistics! And that soundtrack music, just wow! xD I played for a decent amout of hours and didn't run across any bugs!

10+ Sountrack!
10+ Originality!
10+ Story!
10+ Charater Design!
10+ Visaul Art!
20+ For having a voice cast!
30+ For being free! "Stage Nana is truely worthy of developing Visual Novels, I will deffentaily buy any future releases!

This game is totaly worth it, speacially since it's free! Only thing I would of like to see is trading cards, and I know I am asking for a lot but I would of enjoyed having a English voice cast, I don't know of many visual novels that do, It would be nice though! :D

When I was younger (0 - 11ish) I was terrified of hospitals, I don't have any problems (that I have been told of) but I do remember constantly going in, getting checked and spending many nights there alone, Although this story is based on a young girl with a terminal illness the writing will always seem to find a way to relate with the reader.

This (FREE) story was something I was most deadly afraid of happening to me growing up. / I am now 17

If you don't have this, please just give it a little read.

Thanks. :)

An emotional story, that any fan of VNs should experience.

The music does a fantastic job at setting the mood as the story proggresses. I don't believe there was a single thing that broke the immersive feeling as I read through the title; the characters felt very realistic.

The majority of the game had a very drab feeling. Albeit, not in a way that made me want to stop playing, instead it seemed to pull me closer into the story. Feeling as though the emotions the author intended were being clearly portrayed to me.

Being an early access game I expected to run into a few bugs, but suprisingly I had a clear run through without a single buggy moment. Or at least nothing that I identified as an error. There are improvements to be made, but it's definitely worth a play in it's current state. Achievments aren't currently obtainable but I won't mind replaying the game later on to get them.

The translation was very good. There were a few lines that were slightly off. But not enough that the text lost it's meaning.

Overall a great experience. This is a somewhat long, bittersweet title that should last you 4-10 hours, depending on how you pace yourself. And of course, whether or not you replay in both forms of the LN. Voiced and unvoiced.

Narcissu (1st and 2nd) is a slightly sad, yet somewhat cute story that takes a look at patients of a hospital (hospice) who don't have a long time left to live. I definitely lean more towards the "thumbs up" button than to not recommend it. The game (read: visual novel) have that amateurish feel to it. It doesn't affect the game negatively. Perhaps more the opposite - like comparing a hand-made product to a mass produced one. The story holds up quite well and the background music is solid work that adds to the immersion. I would have liked a bit more depression to it for that extra impact. But that's just my personal love for depressing stories. The ending was quite satisfying.

By all means, give it a go when you are bored or feel like trying out some non-interactive visual novel. It's a free title. You'll only lose time, but hopefully gain something worth it to think about.

EDIT: Oh yeah. The artwork is decent especially in the 2nd title. Scarce in quantity but it leaves more for your imagination. Manga/anime haters though: Don't bother. This is not for you.

I may still be reading this story, but I really enjoy what I have read so far. This story is so far quite a sad story, however, despite what is happening in there lives and such, I really feel immersed in the adventures these two have been going through so far, and will continue to read it until the end.
