The concept for this game is sound. A fantasy RPG/exploration game where you manage a crew of pirates sailing the seas in search of treasure and adventure. Unforunately, I can't recommend this game because it has several game breaking bugs that make it not worth playing. Two major issues I had were that the pirates, on occasion, just decided to stop cleaning the poop on the ship and that made it nearly impossible to upkeep huge pirate groups. Another game breaking bug I encountered was that occasionally pirates would just get stuck and not respond to directions. On some occasions, they would even get stuck on the edges of islands or boats and end up falling in the water and drowing.

All in all, this would be a good game it these bugs were fixed.

I bought this game back in it's "Early Access" stage and it looked freaking amazing back then. After playing it again after about a year of not touching it, I saw it was finally released as an actual game with frequent updates. The game is one of the better games out there.

There was so much TLC put into this game and it shows.

You should buy it without questing.

Devs seemed to have abandoned it, however the below is my review of the game before I was disappointed.

I haven't played too much but it is fun. It does get really hard to manage late game with a big crew and all of them pooping and eating and costing you money while you still have to manage their weapons and consumables and abilities individually. Early on though, that's where the real fun is. Set off with yer manageable crew and kill manageable pirates whith crewmembers you actually value because you've invested so much in them, only to have them drown because they were stabbed while ziplining over to the enemy ship. Very sad times... but very fun times too. It's like an RPG but also a real time strategy but also a sandbox but also a cry your eyes out when your captain doesn't know how to swim and gets knocked into the water.

Development was going good, promises were made, and the game looked great. Then the developers seemed to have fallen off the face of the Earth. They seem to have a sudden burst of activity and then just leave. Moving on, the game gets old extremely fast and there's bugs everywhere. I also really hate the graphics. The old graphics were perfectly fine and then the developers came out of nowhere and threw this ugly filter on it. Might be able to turn it off but I haven't found an option for it yet.

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent idea but the devs completely left us hanging. I would have loved this game if the devs would update it.

PROS
  • Fun game, for a while
  • Interesting ship-building and exploration system.

NEUTRAL
  • Graphics settings are a bit odd.

CONS
  • Very, very buggy.
  • Progressively becomes laggier and laggier the longer you play.
  • Repetetive, no real replay value.
  • Combat is lame.
  • Inventory management is horrible.
  • Devs seem to have abandoned the game.

In short, don't buy this unless it's on sale, and even then you might want to find something better to spend your dinero on.

The development team basically does nothing.

No updates for months and months at a team, no cummunication at all with the consumers.

Do not buy this game until it's eventual abandonment and reduction in price to a dollar or two.

Like many of the more recent reviewers, I have to say that this game gets old fast. It's fun and interesting for about an hour or two, but after that you realise there isn't a whole lot to this game and it just becomes a slog. Buy it only on sale if you want to waste an hour or two.

Pixell Piracy is a mixed box for me.

I\'ll start off by saying that yes, I did sink over 4 hours into the game first session, so the game is certainly enjoyable and rewarding to some degree. However, lack of UI clarity and a vague item description hold this one back. Here\'s a basic list of pros and cons in my opinion.

PROS:

-Lots of islands to visit.
-Fun but simple combat.
-Killing pirates and getting loot is satisfying.
-Neat pixel graphics.
-Expanding and building your own ship/crew is enjoyable and motivating.

CONS:

-UI is vague and difficult to navigate.
-Weapons stores tell very little of what the weapons actually do.
-When buying crew members, it\'s basically a box of chocolates; you never know what you\'re gonna get (again, thanks to the crummy, nondescript UI).
-A constant loot stream in the side of the screen makes it difficult to keep track of any particularly good loot you\'ve gained without checking your inventory periodically.

I got this game on sale for roughly $2.50. I figured I could supplement one cup of coffee this week for a full fledged indie game, and I think it was worth it. I look forward to continuing my adventures in the open seas with my crew, Captain Trevor, Mickey, and Vidali, but not before the interface gets a substantial overhaul.

7/10

I think game has a lot of potential, but it really needs an update to make it better. However, it is overall a fun experience and I would still recommend it.

Overall rating: 7/10

Pros:
+Fun, easy combat with rogue-like traveling system
+Completely Customize your ship (or capture another)
+Interesting resource managent, e.g. food, morale/pay
+Train groups of monkeys, crabs, wild dogs, and giant spiders to defend your ship

Cons:
-Occassionally suffers from significant frame rate drops
-Crashes every few hours
-Rare, weird combat bugs like allies loading enemy cannons while boarding their ship and shooting themselves

The game clearly needs some patching so its not worth full price, but its a fun game, so I recommend it if you can find it on sale.

Game feels incomplete.

Lots of info are missing, sometimes I can`t see the X from the Treasure Map inside an island. Later I was able to see, but I don`t understand exactly why. Maybe it`s Intelligence?

Pets are useless.

You wouldn`t know that Int gives Discount when buying things.

Travelling takes a huge time and is annoying.

When you have a huge crew the constant noise of them chewing food makes me insane.

Game becomes way laggier on late game to the point my cannoners are able to shoot 8 cannonballs at once each.

Having to wait 50 seconds to start a battle because of the bordering time limit is annoying as ♥♥♥♥.

I really liked when I put one of my crew to use the cannon, the enemy thought it would be a good idea to enter my ship then he killed all my pets, feels awesome.

Seriously, just ignore pets, they are useless.

Somehow Ranged Weapons can`t be leveled through use. Only through grindstones.

Also the tutorial says that you need TP to learn Skill Books, but I think they changed it so you don`t need TP to use skillbooks anymore.

If you have someone fishing, he ignores the fact that he has Skurvy and dies if you don`t do anything.

Fishing sucks, they are useful in a certain part of the game, but then you start getting huge amounts of money, so you buy Soup / Melons / Sea Biscuit which are thousand times more effective than fishing.

Fisher can`t repair Ship.

Chicken can't make eggs somehow.

Pets are useless.

One time when I was doing a bounty quest when I killed the guy, his corpse didn't get thrown out of my ship and the quest bugged. So the island was empty but I wasn't able to get the quest reward.

You should really have at least one character going full int, the price discount is very nice.

Agility is overpowered, having a character with 40-60 agility is better than any other stat.

Somehow when playing on legendary, high leveled Islands are really tough. Animals not only have lots of evasion but sometimes the massive amount of enemies over there keeps knocking you back. I guess when you get 12+ crew + cannons it becomes a lot easier.
