“Saturday Morning RPG is a steal for anyone who grew up with 80′s cartoons. The references will keep you smiling and the interesting combat will keep you playing. I can’t suggest it enough.”
9/10 – ZTGD

“Nailing those references and that innocently-entertaining atmosphere is precisely what makes Saturday Morning RPG so special. If you merely existed in the eighties, or have experienced things from that time, you’ll likely appreciate most every single bit of this love-letter to the era.”
8/10 – Hardcore Gamer

“I find that I want to play more episodes and can’t get enough.”
9/10 – Root Gamer

About This Game

Saturday Morning RPG is an episodic JRPG set in world heavily inspired by 1980s Saturday morning cartoons and pop culture. Players take the role of Martin "Marty" Michael Hall, an average high-school student who has just been granted an incredible power - a power that ultimately leads him to attract the ire of the world's most notorious villain, Commander Hood! Saturday Morning RPG features a full soundtrack by legendary composer Vince DiCola (Transformers: The Animated Movie, Rocky IV) and his composing partner, Kenny Meriedeth (contributor for DuckTales, Power Rangers, X-Men, and others).

TECH SPECS:

  • Episodic Gameplay: The story and gameplay of Saturday Morning RPG takes place across several episodes, each of which tells a complete self-contained story. Players can play any episode in any order, at any time! All of your stats and items carry between episodes. It’s a unique spin on the tried and true New Game Plus mode. On top of that, small decisions made in some episodes will carry forth into others – adding a layer of replay to each episode. Five episodes are included!

  • Active Turn-Based Combat: Saturday Morning RPG draws quite a bit of inspiration from games like Nintendo’s Paper Mario series. Battles in the game are turn-based, but the player is always participating by actively defending against attacks and completing reflex tests to power up their own assaults.

  • Defeat Enemies With Regular Stuff: Marty fights all his battles in the game by channeling magic through everyday objects. Use a pack of striped gum to summon rainbow zebras that trample your foes – or call upon a transforming action figure to morph you into a semi-truck!

  • Nostalgia Fueled Everything: Everything in Saturday Morning RPG centers on nostalgia. Marty receives his magical abilities thanks to a certain kind of garish plastic notebook, he can equip scratch ‘n sniff stickers to get statistical boosts, and he’ll traverse worlds inspired by the entire gamut of Saturday morning cartoons.

  • Endless Battle Mode: Take on wave after wave of enemies in an endless survival mode where resource management becomes everything!

  • Optional Arena Battles: Take on powerful enemies in optional arena battles. Two fights are currently included, with more coming as free updates.

  • Controller Support: Full support for game controllers.

  • Steam Achievements and Trading Cards: Earn over 70 achievements and collect 8 trading cards.

Reminds me a lot about the 80s.
For the record, I wasn't born in the 1980s, this review is a joke.

This is a really fun, lovingly crafted RPG. I delayed buying it because I was afraid it would botch the mid-80s setting or turn out to be an unimaginative parody. That was a mistake. This game is a genuinely creative love-song to the era. The NPC's have personalities, the setting and art is delightful, and the music is perfect. One quibble is that the soundtrack could have been longer. The combat system could be deeper, but it's adequate to make the battles exciting and often challenging.

I was particularly impressed with the writing. The authors managed to combine some of the best storytelling elements of early RPG's with mid-1980s' cartoon serials. Like it's inspirations, the game's stories are funny yet also morally sincere. The snarky irony of 1990-current storytelling is conspicuous by its absence.

Highly recommended. It's not necessary at all to have lived through the mid-1980s to enjoy this game. I hope to see more from this game's developers.

Are you 30+ years old? do you think there are no new good movies/music released nowadays and you think best musics/movies from 80s/90s? Then this game for you.

its retro with fun comments, dialogs, easter eggs for 80s movies.

The game itself challenging aswell, fights are interesting, you can equip your character with various "weapons".

If you see it on sale, buy instantly, however it totally worth the full price, this is a game what worth supporting so we will see more episodes:-)

On occasion I find myself in a "gaming slump" - Thankfully, Saturday Morning RPG was there to pull me from my distressed state and make me feel like a kid again.

Everything I loved about growing up in the 80s is there in one subtle reference or another.

The only thing disheartening about this game is that there aren't more episodes. :`(

A decent RPG that has a nice old school saturday morning feel to it (duh). I love the references, but younger kids probably won't get some of them; that's okay.

Some issues I have with it though:

1. The art styles don't match; you have a 3D world with clearly 2D pixelated characters, and the two don't mix well. Almost need to go high resolution 2D art to work well here.

2. Having to waggle the thumb stick every fight gets annoying very quickly. Just let those stats be static and always on so we don't have to do this.

3. Sneak attacks don't give any actual sneak bonus; even if you get one, the enemy is likely to attack first.

I'm going to spend some more time with it, but early on it feels good as an RPG.

I really want to enjoy this game. It has great tongue-in-cheek humor, a repetitive combat system that is somewhat less repetitive due to the large amounts of attacks (which are minigame and luck based).

However, on Mac, this game crashes consistently. I have about 20 mins in this game, and I have already had to restart the game 4 times.

Can't recommend based on the bugs encountered.

I find it a shame and astonishing that a game as good as Saturday Morning RPG has not done better commercially. The game has some crazy achievements, such as fighitng 1,000 and even up to 5,000 battles, based on an initial idea of 20 episodes. Since it didn't do well, they had to limit their ambitions to six episodes, hopefully with a fine tuning of the achievements in the future.

But why is all this necessary? The game has everyone a gamer would be looking for. A series of episodes with a simple story, with tons of nostalgic references for one thing. I mean the main character is a guy named Marty, who rides a hoverboard, and gets his powers from a mysterious man known as The Wizard. The retro graphics are a joy to behold, the music is killer, and the gameplay is a very solid Paper Mario/Super Mario RPG type of thing, with button presses for better defense and better attacks.

Not to mention your magic spells use everyday objects, from cookies and paper airplanes, to swords and baseball bats, up to toy aircraft carriers and transformer-like figurines. Hell even your notebook plays a part in the game as depending on the cover and the stickers you can enact various bonuses before each battle.

As it stands at this time there are four episodes, with total time of about 10 hours to get through all of them. There is an arena mode against two semi-tough bosses, and endless battle challenges based around each chapter. You can get the grindy achievements I mentioned earlier legitimately, but my first run through the game got me less then even 100 battles, not counting everything else. Still if you want to, the game is a pleasure to play, and with the huge episode 5 coming early next year, there's no time like the present to get in and get ready for it.

Super totally awesomely retro-nostalgia recommendation.

It's on sale for $0.97 and you haven't bought it yet? Hello, anybody home? Think, McFly!

If you got that reference and you grew up with these graphics then this is your game. I even recommend it at full price. Just take a look at the names of the achievements, the developers get 80's culture in the very best way.

Now power up with a scratch n sniff sticker, paralyze that Badbot with a moonwalk and wang his buddy on the head with your keytar!

This is a really fun old-school style turn-based RPG with a late 80s/early 90s vibe - full of nostalgia moments to SO many things, from Trapper Keepers to sewer surfing. The battles are incredibly easy and there tend to be a lot of them in a row, but that's typical of the genre. A VERY fun game, definitely worth picking up on sale, or if you're into the genre/time period- full price is reasonable.

This is the nostalgic trip down satirical memory lane you need to feel like a kid again. Funny, chocked full of references, and with a story set up as corny and unique as old Saturday morning cartoons you will be entertained for hours. Granted, there are only four episodes right now so you won't be playing real long. However, it looks like the developers might be slowly making more. Overall, if you love RPGs, you'll want this in your collection. It's a definite win.

Pros: Wonderful writting, well developed turn based gameplay, more than just the main story to play, great soundtrack

Cons: not a lot of episodes right now (i assume more are on the way), (if you're using the keyboard) the z,x,c,v buttons are your action buttons for battle at times and you may accidentally hit other buttons (this sceme cannot be changed)

neutral note: It may benifit you if you have a knowledge of 80's pop culture. Not really needed but I feel it may help you get the jokes better.

I am a big fan of RPG games, but even a bigger fan of Parodies. This has a very nice mix of both.

Saturday Moring RPG is the ideal RG for people who are classic gamers as well as classic cartoon lovers from the 1980's to 1990's. The game features well over 100 pop culture items, enemies, comments, even the famous enemy one liners we all know and love since comic books.

Such things that are featured are as follows...

Basket ball = Labeled as (This ball is on fire), which is a reference to the arcade game called NBA JAM
Marty = A character reference to the movie "Back To The Future"
Hover Board = A reference to the movie "Back To The Future II"

and many more that I will let you find out on your own.

The RPG Game is almost played like Super Mario RPG for SNES, and also a cross from Undertale. Many of the RPG concepts are in this game, so many RPG fans will get a kick out of this RPG.

Are you interested in a game that plays and feels like a real love letter to not just 80s cartoons but essentially all of 80s pop culture, from Skeletor to Back to the Future to every high school movie, written by and for children of that era? If so, then this game is for you. If not, then you are sad and I have no desire to speak to you further.

The music by Vince DiCola is worth the price of admission by itself--it felt like a lost happy chapter of Transformers the Movie. The gameplay is simple and a little repetitive but like the tropes and plotlines of all our favorite memories it runs its course before it wears out its welcome.
