DEV260515 - Outcome of second meetings

Hi Everyone,

As you may or may not know, we had another meeting with Pavel recently to plan for the next couple of months. This outcome has covered us for the next 2 months and here is the itemized list, less release dates.

The reason for no release dates being set is due to us still awaiting the completion of the Mod support. From what I have been informed it is close to release - but the creases are being ironed out before it is made public. There would be nothing worse than to release a buggy mod support, so we are making sure it is finalized before release.

Mod support will be released before work on updates listed below are initiated.

First Update (Estimated development time: 7 days) - Release date: To be set/confirmed
- Mud physics and too much in places, Inconsistent and too deep in places
- Xbox customize controls
- Default camera will be mirrored for equal viewing around vehicle
- Map cloaking off for easy mode as an option

Second Update (Estimated development time: 17 days) - Release date: To be set/confirmed
- SP saves fixed from loses upon updates.
- MP saves

Free DLC (Estimated Development time: 29 days) - Release date: To be set/confirmed
- 1 - 2 new game modes
- 1 - 2 trucks
- 1 map

Any further information will be posted in due course, but this was the outcome of our meeting to ensure a basic schedule for the following months.

Me: "Are you stuck bro?"
My Friend: "Yea, I'm stuck."
Me: "Hold on I'll try to winch you out."
(hooks winch up)
Me: "Ok, you ready?"
My Friend: Yea, I'm ready."
Me: "Ok lets get you out."
(Turns on winch and accelerates with 4WD and Diff Lock on; Friend has parking brake on... I Instantly sink)
Me: "Sh*t... I think I'm stuck now too..."
My Friend: "What do we do now?"
Me: "Alt F4....."

10/10 would sink again

Spintires is an offroad driving game where you get behind the wheel of a number of Russian vehicles and drive them through all the mud you could possibly hope for. Using only your map and compass you have to navigate the rugged terrain in order to complete objectives such as collecting and delivering lumber.

+Great graphics
+Quite a few different trucks, each with customisation options and they are all quite different to each other, in appearance and performance
+Amazing mud physics, the deformation caused by driving through mud looks realistic and is excellent
+Several maps, all of them are quite different to each other and the vehicles available vary between each one
+The winch system is great and the power of it feels quite realistic
+Multiplayer, particularly with friends, is a lot of fun
+Driving controls are good, as are the crane controls (used for putting lumber in your trailer)
+You have to discover the different parts of the map so even if you don't want to do the main objective there is a lot to do on each map
+They did a very good job in making it difficult to judge water depth

+/-The majority of the gameplay comes from getting yourself out of the mud, personally I think it's fun but it might put some people off

-The camera controls and the camera itself are awful. The controls are very sensitive, when you zoom out it automatically zooms in making it very hard to see when using big trucks, it has a very strange centre, sometimes it pans by itself, you can only move it on the x-axis, it has awkward angles and it's difficult to get it at the angle you want
-The devs still haven't added a first person camera which was promised very early on after its launch
-The relationship between the dev and the community isn't great (see forums)
-Infrequent updates despite being promised regular large content updates
-For what there is (i.e. the number of maps and trucks) it isn't worth the £19.99 price tag
-There's not much difference between the demo and the full game
-It feels very unfinished

Verdict:
6

It's a fun offroad driving game but it has too many issues for me to recommend it at full price, grab it on sale and play it with friends.

I really wanted to get into this. I REALLY did. I have a friend who used to play it all the time and recommended it to me, so of course I gave into temptation and bought it. Now please, before you downvote this simply because you see I don't recommend it, the least you can do is read my review. This is not just my opinion, but the truth, which I believe people should know about.

Spintires is not a *bad* game, per se, but it has some problems, and so do the developers. With every single update comes more bugs and glitches. I've seen it all, from spawning in the ground, to a huge blocky shadow around vehicles, and almost broken multiplayer (which are all fixed, for now.) The devs also said that fixing bugs now has priority over new features, and while that's good in a way, it also just shows you that something is wrong. Now that it is into July (as of my last revision), no new features have been imlemented for a couple months, including the promise of mod support and more vehicles, thus making this game seem much more like a tech demo. A past update also made every single map break entirely, making these poor modders have to reconfigure their maps just to work again, all because of one update. To add to that, usually with every bigger update comes wiped save files, so you can forget trying to "beat" a map.

Also, a while ago, the developers came out and said that they are pushing official mod support by another month. It has now been much longer since I posted this review. They have done this a few times at this point. And modding is what makes this game a lot more enjoyable. Which is unfortunate in itself, because for a game like this you shouldn't have to rely on mods. But right now, modding is a chore, and in the end when I actually get in game to try mods, the fun just does not last for some reason. Not to mention they are already discussing Spintires 2. Why? I don't understand why you can't just keep making this game better. I seriously hope this wasn't some sort of cash grab so you can fund an unnecessary sequel.

I hate to say it, but without mods, this game (in my opinion) is just boring, and slightly frustrating. I do realize that yes, this is basically a logging simulator game, which it is good at! But when you get down to it, it's just a ton of driving through a LOT of thick mud with very slow trucks, and you can't enjoy it if you don't have patience. Sometimes I'll get so far with a truck, but I end up completely stuck in mud or flip over, and I have to start all over, or bring another truck to it and pull it out. In a nutshell, this entire game seems like a chore. The camera is also very annoying. A lot of people say "you'll get used to it", but if you've ever played a game with a good camera, I don't think you'll find it very pleasant. Go ahead and try the demo to see for yourself. It's almost no different in the current version.

Despite me not enjoying it right now, however, I am certainly rooting for this game. There are some good things about the game, such as the great graphics, physics, terrain deformation, and overall realism. It certainly has potential, but to me, something is wrong with the way it's being updated. The game should have, by no means, been removed from Early Access, or even be close to $30 at full price. At it's best, I'd say it's worth only $15. So for now, until official mod support is added, more features, and at least a 50% sale, I advise you to buy this only if tedious logging sounds like your type of thing.

PLAYING IN THE MUD

Stop all this is a great game. Not the usual early access to so much talked about in recent times, but a complete product, although -a however put Complete Complete Complete is not. But you are assured that it will grow.
Spintires is a game for people who like off-road driving simulations extreme and as such should be taken. Definitely not suitable for everyone and does not even want to be. It established its competence fence, touching especially to you to decide if you are ready or not to face it. Who has not experienced similar titles will not leave anyway scare, because it could discover a universe that did not imagine the possible implications playful.
Wandering around the map, you can also unlock new modifications to your mechanical monsters, like new tires (by the way, you can not act on the pressure of the wheels ... in this context is not a detail), lights, container, mechanical arms (You still can do very little, actually). You want to know the best thing? Leveraging the multiplayer mode, you can do all of this together in four different friends!

PRO
Accurate simulation of the ground
Accurate simulation of vehicles
Simulation of vehicles that meet the ground accurate

AGAINST
Not many content
You can save a map at a time
It lacks support for steering wheels and the like
