What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Blockstorm Early Access version is a work in progress and therefore many things are going to change
and many others will be added.

We believe that we have built a basis on which develop, following the opinions of the community, the most entertaining first-person shooter based on destructible blocks.

To achieve this objective, Steam Early Access Program is the best choice we could do. We want constant confrontation with community, gathering as much feedback as possible, and improve every aspect of the game thanks to those suggestions.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Blockstorm will remain in Early Access development until we feel the community believes Blockstorm is ready for a full release. We don’t have a concrete deadline in mind, but we will get a better sense as the development of the game progresses.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The fully realized Blockstorm will have 5 new online multiplayer game modes in addition to the actual 3, new weapons, new maps, new characters and much more.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently Blockstorm has online multiplayer with classic deathmatch, tema deathmatch and assault modes.
Character Editor and Map editor are also available.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“At this stage of development no one knows how or when. But the price will raise in the future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We welcome all feedback and views on the Steam Community hub.”

This review is posted on the 16th of december, 2014. Last edited on the 18th of december, 2014.

Because I'm lazy and don't want to make an endless looking tome, I'm just going to structurally give you the pros and cons with sometimes a small explanation.

Pros
✓ A regular amount of guns and other weapons for a, more or less, balanced gameplay (More guns is always better).
✓ The overall gameplay isn't quite boring, there is plenty of action, unless you're playing on a map only available to paid players, because these maps are usually quite big (I'll talk more about this in the Cons section).
✓ Plenty of maps to play on (This also has a negative side).
✓ 4 different game modes (This also has a negative side).
✓ The possibility to create your own characters and maps is a huge plus. Both editors are (in my opinion) very easy to use and have lots of features to work with.
✓ Steam Workshop.
✓ Achievements and statistics.
✓ ... (More will follow)

Cons
✖ Low amount of paid (non-demo) players.
✖ Not being able to play on different maps and gamemodes than the one provided for demo users.
✖ Too many demo users. This is a huge downside for paid players. Demo users can only play on certain demo servers, but these servers are also available for paid players. Because of the low amount of paid players and the high amount of demo players and the fact that demo players can only play on a couple of maps and on 2 out of the 4 gamemodes, what means that the demo servers only provide those maps and just 2 gamemodes, means you'll almost never play on other maps and different gamemodes as a paid player and because of that will not get a full view of the game.
✖ Some maps available for paid players are just too big to play on. You'll hardly get a full lobby when hosting a map that isn't available for demo users, so with a lower amount of players, certain maps are just too big.
✖ People who try to ruin the experience for other players by griefing, with for example, C4, are frequent.
✖ ... (More will follow)

Mixed
✓/✖ This game has a lot to offer for early access. But when buying the game for the scandalous price of 11,99€, the developers don't tell you, you get a game with broken gameplay. The gameplay may not always be boring and have a high amount of action, but that doesn't mean you can properly play. The developers seem to not have learnt anything out of other games: griefing, spawn killing/destroying, panic knifing, too big maps, using a demo, not to introduce new players to the game, but by letting them dominate it, etc.

Is what you get really worth the full price? In my opinion, absolutely not. There are plenty of other games that provide way more for the same or even a lower price than this game.

And yet I recommend it... All the opinions I have brings me on the edge of good and bad.

5.5/10.

Incredibly fun in many ways possible. I even created Markiplier in this game! The editors are great for making yourself into the game, or to make characters from other games and stuff into the world of Blockstorm itself. Modes like Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are so fun it doesn't make me wanna stop.

This game deserves a must-buy, because I love everything about it! So, bring on the blocky soldiers because it's time to 'Storm those Blocks'!

In a nutshell: Minecraft + Counter-Strike = Blockstorm.
Fantastic gameplay, high quality graphics (for pixel graphics, that is), dynamic maps and game modes, lost of fun with friends, customizable characters and maps and a fairly diverse range of weapons added together makes this a gem of a game that won't get old fast.
It's cheap as well, especially for it's quality and the amount of time you can (and probably will) spend playing it.
8/10- Fantastic game that I highly recommend.

I recommend this game because it is very simular to ace of spades, but better. For instance, lots of weapons to chose from, and you can customize your own charater and maps and post them in the workshop! Its kind of like call of duty and Minecraft together to create Blockstorm!

FINALLY! A decent Minecraft-FPS! What can I say? You can blow all the blocks up in the map and make your own block soldier.
A better shooter than CoD

Before you read this review, might I say that the demo is worth trying out to get a sense of the actual gameplay, as the only thing it limits you from is building things in the editors and locks you to only a few weapons.
Anyway, Blockstorm is a strange FPS to describe. Unlike most other voxel manshooters / "Minecraft with GUNZ" games that I've tried, the customization and building aspect mostly takes a background role to the combat mechanics inside actual matches, making the FULLY destructible maps feel more like Battlefield than Minecraft, while having the scale of neither. While you can dig your way underground to an enemy spawn and build fortifications, the building side is pretty limited to just doing that, which I sorta like. It makes the game feel more focused and more like an FPS with sandbox elements rather than Minecraft with guns and multiplayer, which doesn't really work well.
The combat is pretty dull at the current stage. The weapons handle like CoD and shoot like Battlefield, but the movement takes heavy influence from Counter-Strike, in that you have no sprint and movement exploits are incredibly difficult to pull off and end up feeling unimpressive. All in all, it's slow. Not clunky, but slow. Respawning back at your base and making your way all the way back to the battlefield can be frustrating at times in a game where the strategy side is a bit underdeveloped, so most players possess the inclination to just look for guys to shoot.
---
While that hardly sounds like a recommendation, this game still has a few things going for it; the sheer amount of potential and strong creative tools are huge counterweights to an otherwise average shooter, and given that the game gets updates fairly regularly, Blockstorm could turn into a fantastic large scale FPS to the likes of Star Wars: Battlefront.
When in huge battles, the game really opens up. Fully destructible environments that can be rebuilt as resources permit means that the search for cover is always tense, especially in the thick of battle. A well placed grenade can demolish enemy cover, opening them up to hellfire, and collapsing buildings can be pretty painful. The health regen is slow enough that being shot can have an actual impact on your play instead of hiding behind an indestructible wall for 10 seconds. Building trenches and repairing walls with makeshift patches of blocks is a great experiance when you actually get around to doing it, as the gameplay doesn't really encourage you to at the current stage unless your enemy is smart and whittles away at the map default cover at key points. They need to revamp the gun mechanics to suit this slower style of gameplay, since it feels good when it actually comes together.
The two editors, the map editor and character editor, are very strong, and can push the game to even greater levels if a few creative users get their hands on it. I haven't really used the map editor much, but from the levels I played that were designed in them (that being all of them, as the devs use the tool to create their maps) I can tell it's competent. The character editor is really good and quite a bit of fun. It breaks everything into manageable chunks, and you can start from scratch or edit a skin you already have. You can even import and export parts individually and paste them in at any time, as well as select sections and copy them to a clipboard for use later. You want a minotaur head on a small anime girl body? Go for it, nothing is stopping you! Granted, this makes the game look like a bit of a cluster♥♥♥♥ in regards to the player models on the field, but it's nothing gamebreaking (maybe a force player / enemy model option á la CPMA, devs?)
---
Overall, I've had a lot of fun with Blockstorm, and I hope you give the demo a try at the very least. If the devs make some adjustments to how the combat feels (and MAYBE up the movement speed) and put more emphasis on the strategy side of building, and if the player base allows bigger, more open ended battles, this can turn into something great. I hope to see you in battle, hypothetical reader. I'll be the chick in a bad Christmas sweater with a bow and a giant CRT monitor for a head.

[This is my second review of the game, after playing it much more]

First of all, do not listen to the negative reviews; have you seen their playtime? One hour in and they already give a bad review for the game, anyway...

Blockstorm is a Multiplayer (Soon to have Singleplayer) Voxel-Based FPS, with tons of potential.

Want to know why? Firstly, Blockstorm has progressed so much since I bought it a couple months back. I struggled to find servers with players in, and when I did find a server that is not empty, it was full of spammers and immature player skins. I didn't think much of Blockstorm when it first came out, just another shooter with a crappy community.

But no, as I started taking part with the community itself through the hub and the forums, I realised this game is much better than when you first open it:

The Developers are working all the time, and keeping in-touch with the community, using their ideas and opinions to make their game more accessable and enjoyable! This game only has two programmers, yet they get so much work done! Since I have started playing this game they have released some amasing updates, featuring CTF and Turrets to spice up your maps, and anti-analysing in the player skin editor!

Believe me - I now find it hard to find a server that is not full!
Here are some of the games features:

- High-Tech editors, with great tools that match your skill level.
- Addictive gameplay, that makes you want to come back for more.
- Balanced weapons, to stop people using the same weapon.
- Active community, that are amasing in every way.
- Brilliant Forums, with great staff.
- Hard-working Developers, that get the job done.
- Bugs fixed straight away, after being reported.

Overall, you should buy this game right now - Or if you already have the game but have given it a negative review...

Play it again and realised what you are missing out on.
