What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Blockstorm Early Access version is a work in progress and therefore many things are going to change
and many others will be added.

We believe that we have built a basis on which develop, following the opinions of the community, the most entertaining first-person shooter based on destructible blocks.

To achieve this objective, Steam Early Access Program is the best choice we could do. We want constant confrontation with community, gathering as much feedback as possible, and improve every aspect of the game thanks to those suggestions.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Blockstorm will remain in Early Access development until we feel the community believes Blockstorm is ready for a full release. We don’t have a concrete deadline in mind, but we will get a better sense as the development of the game progresses.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The fully realized Blockstorm will have 5 new online multiplayer game modes in addition to the actual 3, new weapons, new maps, new characters and much more.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently Blockstorm has online multiplayer with classic deathmatch, tema deathmatch and assault modes.
Character Editor and Map editor are also available.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“At this stage of development no one knows how or when. But the price will raise in the future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We welcome all feedback and views on the Steam Community hub.”

So many 'block' styled games have come out on steam. Some have been bad, and some have been meh. THIS game is very well done! I recieved a coupon for it so I thought, meh why not. I had a really fun time! Suprisingly, I haven't seen any chat saying "lel 1v1 me ♥♥♥ ill qwickscope ur cat 420 yolo" yet. One con is that NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE PLAY THIS GAME! I've had a struggle to get into a populated game! I feel that this would be really fun with alot of people or with your friends at a LAN party, etc. I litterally rate this game 10/10, I can see no major faults on the developers part, no in game microtransactions, and great editing assets! This game is a gem in it's genre!

This review is for the early access Blockstorm. Sit down and listen to me carry on and allow me bore you to death. :)

Brief Summary

Don't get me wrong, there are many games out there that allow you to build your own maps out of blocks and then allow you and some friends, or some random people to completely lay waste on your map. Although most of them are unfortunately terrible, sometimes due to pay to win with the free to plays, or some just are out there in Early Access floating around trying to grab your money with a game that is only 20% complete. No, this game is not like this. I can easily say that I had fun with this game with the many shenanigans that have happened to both me and my mates. Despite the lack of servers, as the only official servers that aren't empty are demo servers meaning the player will need to host their premium servers to play their maps with other premium members.

Now I'm going to go back for a moment, and trust me I won't take long. This game is fairly limited content wise, there are very little prefabs, however I have noticed that more and more prefab packs are being released in the workshop, which is very good. The weapons are lacking in numbers and the gameplay mechanics can be refined. Again however this game has only been out for a short while, and in my time from when I bought it, I have noticed quite a few interesting changes and additions such as turret editors, new developer made maps (which I really don't care much for as the buzzing workshop community has made.) I really do see much potential for this little, but as this is only gameplay wise, as again the weapons are lacking, some of the animations can be cleaned up and multiple other implementations would be nice.

I actually urge you to buy this then to play the demo as that means the community grows and the developers get more money to kickstart this game from where it is now to a full complete game in no time.

Pros

- It's fun editing and creating maps... then completely annihilating them with friends.
- The workshop community is always at it creating new refreshing and unique maps.
- This game is fairly good for what it's potential may become.
- It's got some pretty fun maps, despite them being on the demo servers.
- Endless creativity, building tunnels, to making massive defense towers it's almost endless with the map maker.

Cons

- It does need a bit more content, however it is still in very early access.
- Unfortunately this game is overrun with demo users... again I urge you to buy this to support the developers.
- It is fairly basic, some new mechanics would go a long way.

Because I'm lazy and don't want to make an endless looking tome, I'm just going to structurally give you the pros and cons with sometimes a small explanation.

Pros
✓ A regular amount of guns and other weapons for a, more or less, balanced gameplay (More guns is always better).
✓ The overall gameplay isn't quite boring, there is plenty of action, unless you're playing on a map only available to paid players, because these maps are usually quite big (I'll talk more about this in the Cons section).
✓ Plenty of maps to play on (This also has a negative side).
✓ 4 different game modes (This also has a negative side).
✓ The possibility to create your own characters and maps is a huge plus. Both editors are (in my opinion) very easy to use and have lots of features to work with.
✓ Steam Workshop.
✓ Achievements and statistics.
✓ ... (More will follow)

Cons
✖ Low amount of paid (non-demo) players.
✖ Not being able to play on different maps and gamemodes than the one provided for demo users.
✖ Too many demo users. This is a huge downside for paid players. Demo users can only play on certain demo servers, but these servers are also available for paid players. Because of the low amount of paid players and the high amount of demo players and the fact that demo players can only play on a couple of maps and on 2 out of the 4 gamemodes, what means that the demo servers only provide those maps and just 2 gamemodes, means you'll almost never play on other maps and different gamemodes as a paid player and because of that will not get a full view of the game.
✖ Some maps available for paid players are just too big to play on. You'll hardly get a full lobby when hosting a map that isn't available for demo users, so with a lower amount of players, certain maps are just too big.
✖ People who try to ruin the experience for other players by griefing, with for example, C4, are frequent.
✖ ... (More will follow)

Mixed
✓/✖ This game has a lot to offer for early access. But when buying the game for the scandalous price of 11,99€, the developers don't tell you, you get a game with broken gameplay. The gameplay may not always be boring and have a high amount of action, but that doesn't mean you can properly play. The developers seem to not have learnt anything out of other games: griefing, spawn killing/destroying, panic knifing, too big maps, using a demo, not to introduce new players to the game, but by letting them dominate it, etc.

Is what you get really worth the full price? In my opinion, absolutely not. There are plenty of other games that provide way more for the same or even a lower price than this game.

And yet I recommend it... All the opinions I have brings me on the edge of good and bad.

5.5/10.

There is something really special about these block games, cant put my finger on it. I just enjoy them ALOT.. :)

Lets start with the good stuff:
Creating maps with the editor is easy and the editor feels powerfull in the right hands. Multiplayer online is super fun. You can create and share / play with your own created characters.

There is no veichles in this game and i dont really miss them either. Why? The maps created are more like close combat or sniper variations aka old COD UO. The difference is ofcourse the gfx style and that you can destroy almost everything on the maps so never expect to be able to hide for to long. :)

The game is created with the community in mind so start creating some cool or funny maps to share. Fun fun fun...

I would recommend that you buy a 4 pack and share with your friends for some fun gaming. And lets help this community to grow, the game really deserves it.

And sadly a tiny tumbs down:
The characters can feel a bit floaty sometimes. Just jump and you will understand. Also a sprint button for quick getaway would be most welcome. The run speed used in current game can be walk speed and run could be done in bursts with energy bar.

((Please note the game is still in early process so this can change))

And yes the score:
GFx 9-10 (Usefull comparisons Minecraft, Guncraft, Murder Miners, Blockland)
Sfx 7-10 (its okay and fits the game)
Music 6-10 (Not much to say, but it fits where it is)
Gameplay 9-10 (SuperEasy creating maps and fun)

I will gladly recommend this game because its super fun online. And who does not like blowing stuff to bits or creating your own maps to play with your friends. (( Get it on 25-50% SALE ))

The community is not large but this is where we can improve. BUY and PLAY :)

[This is my second review of the game, after playing it much more]

First of all, do not listen to the negative reviews; have you seen their playtime? One hour in and they already give a bad review for the game, anyway...

Blockstorm is a Multiplayer (Soon to have Singleplayer) Voxel-Based FPS, with tons of potential.

Want to know why? Firstly, Blockstorm has progressed so much since I bought it a couple months back. I struggled to find servers with players in, and when I did find a server that is not empty, it was full of spammers and immature player skins. I didn't think much of Blockstorm when it first came out, just another shooter with a crappy community.

But no, as I started taking part with the community itself through the hub and the forums, I realised this game is much better than when you first open it:

The Developers are working all the time, and keeping in-touch with the community, using their ideas and opinions to make their game more accessable and enjoyable! This game only has two programmers, yet they get so much work done! Since I have started playing this game they have released some amasing updates, featuring CTF and Turrets to spice up your maps, and anti-analysing in the player skin editor!

Believe me - I now find it hard to find a server that is not full!
Here are some of the games features:

- High-Tech editors, with great tools that match your skill level.
- Addictive gameplay, that makes you want to come back for more.
- Balanced weapons, to stop people using the same weapon.
- Active community, that are amasing in every way.
- Brilliant Forums, with great staff.
- Hard-working Developers, that get the job done.
- Bugs fixed straight away, after being reported.

Overall, you should buy this game right now - Or if you already have the game but have given it a negative review...

Play it again and realised what you are missing out on.

A very funny building/shooter in minecraftstyle! I like the Map and Charakter Editors - its for everyone to understand and have a good building system! I hope there will be added some more different Blocks. You can use sniper rifles, rifles, grenades, pistols, etc. You can also use a shovel to digg your own ways throw the levels or make yourself a bunker to defense. There are different Gameplays like Deathmatch, Team-DM, CTF, etc.

I like it an recommend that Game!

Before you read this review, might I say that the demo is worth trying out to get a sense of the actual gameplay, as the only thing it limits you from is building things in the editors and locks you to only a few weapons.
Anyway, Blockstorm is a strange FPS to describe. Unlike most other voxel manshooters / "Minecraft with GUNZ" games that I've tried, the customization and building aspect mostly takes a background role to the combat mechanics inside actual matches, making the FULLY destructible maps feel more like Battlefield than Minecraft, while having the scale of neither. While you can dig your way underground to an enemy spawn and build fortifications, the building side is pretty limited to just doing that, which I sorta like. It makes the game feel more focused and more like an FPS with sandbox elements rather than Minecraft with guns and multiplayer, which doesn't really work well.
The combat is pretty dull at the current stage. The weapons handle like CoD and shoot like Battlefield, but the movement takes heavy influence from Counter-Strike, in that you have no sprint and movement exploits are incredibly difficult to pull off and end up feeling unimpressive. All in all, it's slow. Not clunky, but slow. Respawning back at your base and making your way all the way back to the battlefield can be frustrating at times in a game where the strategy side is a bit underdeveloped, so most players possess the inclination to just look for guys to shoot.
---
While that hardly sounds like a recommendation, this game still has a few things going for it; the sheer amount of potential and strong creative tools are huge counterweights to an otherwise average shooter, and given that the game gets updates fairly regularly, Blockstorm could turn into a fantastic large scale FPS to the likes of Star Wars: Battlefront.
When in huge battles, the game really opens up. Fully destructible environments that can be rebuilt as resources permit means that the search for cover is always tense, especially in the thick of battle. A well placed grenade can demolish enemy cover, opening them up to hellfire, and collapsing buildings can be pretty painful. The health regen is slow enough that being shot can have an actual impact on your play instead of hiding behind an indestructible wall for 10 seconds. Building trenches and repairing walls with makeshift patches of blocks is a great experiance when you actually get around to doing it, as the gameplay doesn't really encourage you to at the current stage unless your enemy is smart and whittles away at the map default cover at key points. They need to revamp the gun mechanics to suit this slower style of gameplay, since it feels good when it actually comes together.
The two editors, the map editor and character editor, are very strong, and can push the game to even greater levels if a few creative users get their hands on it. I haven't really used the map editor much, but from the levels I played that were designed in them (that being all of them, as the devs use the tool to create their maps) I can tell it's competent. The character editor is really good and quite a bit of fun. It breaks everything into manageable chunks, and you can start from scratch or edit a skin you already have. You can even import and export parts individually and paste them in at any time, as well as select sections and copy them to a clipboard for use later. You want a minotaur head on a small anime girl body? Go for it, nothing is stopping you! Granted, this makes the game look like a bit of a cluster♥♥♥♥ in regards to the player models on the field, but it's nothing gamebreaking (maybe a force player / enemy model option á la CPMA, devs?)
---
Overall, I've had a lot of fun with Blockstorm, and I hope you give the demo a try at the very least. If the devs make some adjustments to how the combat feels (and MAYBE up the movement speed) and put more emphasis on the strategy side of building, and if the player base allows bigger, more open ended battles, this can turn into something great. I hope to see you in battle, hypothetical reader. I'll be the chick in a bad Christmas sweater with a bow and a giant CRT monitor for a head.

Blockstorm... after playing the demo,i decided to buy it at the price i wanted to ( 2$ / 1 tf2 key ) and i downloaded and played it . The game is not bad, it is the same thing as the demo, just that you can use workshop and everything that comes with it ( create your own maps, your own characters and stuff like that ) ,and use some more weapons. It also has a very realistic movement factor, where the heavier weapons you equip , the slower you are. The thing that sucks is that there aren't a lot of players, and some people cannot create maps. Like really, what's the effin' point of creating a map where you fall to your death if you move too much,i haven't got enough space to dodge the opponent's bullets this way.. moving on,the game is not bad, it has cards so you get part of what you spent back but it doesn't have much players, recommended if around 2-3$ pricetag.

Want a better version of Ace of Spades and/or Guncraft? Blockstorm is your game. The graphics are a lot more polished and actually look neat, despite the blocky nature, the combat feels great, and my favorite part is the editors. Out of all the Minecraft type games I've played on Steam, the editors feels fluent and easy to use. If you want some good ol' combat shooter fun with a blocky view and some neat editing, this is the game for you!

Do you like block-based games? Do you like FPS games? Then you will like Blockstorm! It has the combination of building and shooting all in one! There is a small variety of weapons, but the large selection of user-created and default skins make up for it.

9/10 Would reccomend to friends/family.
