What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Blockstorm Early Access version is a work in progress and therefore many things are going to change
and many others will be added.

We believe that we have built a basis on which develop, following the opinions of the community, the most entertaining first-person shooter based on destructible blocks.

To achieve this objective, Steam Early Access Program is the best choice we could do. We want constant confrontation with community, gathering as much feedback as possible, and improve every aspect of the game thanks to those suggestions.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Blockstorm will remain in Early Access development until we feel the community believes Blockstorm is ready for a full release. We don’t have a concrete deadline in mind, but we will get a better sense as the development of the game progresses.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The fully realized Blockstorm will have 5 new online multiplayer game modes in addition to the actual 3, new weapons, new maps, new characters and much more.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently Blockstorm has online multiplayer with classic deathmatch, tema deathmatch and assault modes.
Character Editor and Map editor are also available.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“At this stage of development no one knows how or when. But the price will raise in the future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We welcome all feedback and views on the Steam Community hub.”

A VERY fun game. It's like Counter-Strike and Minecraft had a baby (or rather, it's like Ace of Spades when it was still good). You can make your own skin literally block by block (and the skins in this game are VERY detailed because of it), you can even edit the turret and zombie skins (yes, there are zombies in the game!) You can even customize your weapons so they look whatever you want them to look like (though there are some minor restrictions in that field, it's still cool). To top it off, it even has a MAP EDITOR, so you can make whatever kind of map you want, build your own prefabs (structures that you can later use as assets for other maps or share), and pick what modes and weapons you want on the map! You could have snipers only, make it run for Team Deathmatch or CTF, etc.

All in all, this game will never leave you bored of creativity, and it's a really solid game (aside from some minor bugs, but again, MINOR bugs). I fully recommend this game to anyone who wants a nice Minecraft-style shooter with good weapons balance, and a wide variety of creative tools at your disposal. (And if you are wanting to scratch that itch that Ace of Spades used to give you before Jagex screwed it up, this is the game you should get).

I remember years ago I used various Gun Mods in Minecraft... Well, this is the definitive version of it.
Also I love customization. I had fun playing Robocraft and I love FPS games. Good thing I stop playing after for a while since this game has few people in the servers...Yet. This could be easily consume another day of my life.
I will probably this game again if I have enough free-time. Nevertheless, It's a good game concept done right.

thank you indigala for such a nice next-gen gaming experience.
Game ran smoothly at 8 fps with medium resolution and low settings with my intel intergrated gpu (because my old video card = dead, no sarcasm intended.) and I was suprised how well optimized game was. (well, it's not a heavy graphic game released by AAA publishers like u-buysoft and such.) So far, being able to customize and choosing your own arsenal was the keypoint during the gameplay and it was fun enough for an early access game.

you might say, there are other games like ace of spade, guncraft and blah blah but 10 times better. (but seriously who cares, it is still in early access and might be better on full release), you get workshop support that gives you guns, characters and maps or make your own stuff. overall it's nice game to try out/buy and play it whenever you are bored. 9/10

This game is pretty fun!

Imagine Ace of Spades, except actually improved upon and not turned into a Call of Duty-like game. It features a variety of weapons and interesting mechanics. I think one of the big sellers of the game is its custom weapon and playerskin makers, as well as map making system. The combat is fairly good, though it has room for improvement. I found that matches tend to be rather... Quiet. It felt somewhat isolated when playing with other players. Hopefully the community grows to circumvent this issue.
The loadout system is very interesting. There's a weight (In KG) system that dictates how fast you move. If it's 6 KG, you move pretty fast. If you weigh 10 KG, you'll be slower.
There's weapons like a rifle, a sniper rifle, an assault rifle, an SMG, a shotgun, and a heavy machine gun. They all tend to synergize well with a certain side-arm. Yes, there's more than just your pistol. You're given the choice between choosing a regular pistol, uzi, and a small shotgun with two shells loaded in. Ontop of that, you can also pick your grenade type. It can be a frag grenade, a C4 that can be detonated on command, a claymore that detonates when a player touches its laser, or a freakin' RPG... With only one rocket.
You can also use a block placing tool and a shovel to manipulate the terrain.

A few issues I have encountered is that the game does NOT autosave your custom skins, maps, characters, etc. This means if you accidentally quit, it's gone. Yes, it happened to me when I was least expecting it. Another issue that I feel like only I get annoyed by is making weapon skins. Whenever you make a weapon skin, there's certain blocks that cannot be broken. This is so that you don't make an SMG look like a shotgun. I tend to get a little annoyed with it, but I can understand why it's there. I would like if there was some system that lets you delete those blocks, but on the offset that only you can see the skin. The only other issue is that the community is small. Hopefully by the end of the two week free-to-play event, the community would had grown by then.

Other than that, it's pretty good. Get it if you liked the original Ace of Spades. Cheers for monthly updates!

A good mix up of Minecraft and First Person Shooter. Plenty of gamemodes to choose (DM, TDM, CTF, Castle Wars, Hunted, Assault) that mostly require you to shoot and kill enemies, tho some like CTF or CW require you to build defenses or be smart and sneak around capturing the flag or "looting" the chests.

Some primary weps (AK-47, Rifle, Sniper Rifle, LMG, Shotgun) and secondary weps (Uzi, Handgun, short barreled shotgun) and the explosives (RPG, Grenades, ClayMore) + a shovel, knife and a stack of 100blocks to use, amongst other things i have forgotten. These guns feel realistic when shooting against enemies, tho the sniper rifle has a lot of sway and most of the weapons haven't got a lot of recoil.

There is a lot of character models to choose from + character and map editing.

I don't have anything to say about the community other that there are some well mannered, for the most part they are quit in in-game matches.

There is a rank (?) system that i have yet to figure out how it works.

There migth be some bad things like the grenade throwing (tho it is only my opinion) or some map limits they had put up :/

Overall, a nice experience for free, can get ya hooked up for a lot of hours, and i encourage you to buy it ;).

Fantastic little game, and quite flexible in terms of battles. The game allows you to literally craft your surroundings in order to make your own little battlefield, straight from your own demented mind. Because of this sandbox feature, you are able to create whatever you wish; your imagination is the only limit. This game is also a very good timewaster, and I highly recommend purchasing for the support of the developers.

I am honestly too lazy to write reviews, but this game actually deserves some attention and a larger population.

To begin, I am not a fan of minecraft or any blocky looking games. However, the graphics do not affect the gaming experience whatsoever. Blockstorm feels like a proper FPS game, and the map destruction, and ability to build structures/barriers using blocks provided to all players, result in often unique gameplay every time.

The guns, although a small number, have their own feel and characteristics. Unlike other FPS', Blockstorm is successful at delivering a different combat experience with each weapon. The sniping mechanics were a little difficult to master, but the skill necessary to one-shot kill your enemies is cleverly nerfed with the scope sway.

The maps and game modes seem very appropriate for the price tag, and the map/character editor give you an even bigger bang for your buck.

The player mobility is affected by gear type and weight. This feature encourages the player to think about the weapons and gadgets to carry to be effective in the current combat situation, or to match their playing style.

Blockstorm does have its issues. One of those is the spawn system; the enemy team can overpower your team and spawn kill quite easily. There is a few seconds of invincibility right after spawning, but a skilled spawn killer can ruin your game regardless of this feature.

Overall the game is worth every penny, and a must have indie FPS.

Fun Except That A Majority Of The Players Ive Met So Far Have Been Either Campers, Spawn Campers, Or People WHO ACTUALLY HAVE SKILL.

Now The Main Reason For Campers/SpawnCampers Is Probaly That The Game Is Free Once Its Out Of Open Beta I TOTALLY RECOMMEND

But.....

Only On Sale Since This AT THE MOMENT Is Just Another Fps WITH THE EXCEPTION OF This Game Has A EPIC Skin (Gun and Playermodel) Maker That Is Easy To Use Hard To Master. (Its Only Cosmetic)

So I Say Buy It On Sale Or If You Got A Coupon But Other Than That Wait For Sale (The Wait Will Be Worth It)

It's a cautious recommendation since I can't say I really enjoyed playing, but that's due to my dislike of competitive multiplayer games. It is a very interesting take on the genre, and everything from joining a match to playing with a controller went smoothly, so if you're into competitive multiplayer, definitely check it out. Especially if it's still free to try in the open beta.

This review is outdated! I may change it at some point.

This review is posted on the 16th of december, 2014. Last edited on the 18th of december, 2014.

Because I'm lazy and don't want to make an endless looking tome, I'm just going to structurally give you the pros and cons with sometimes a small explanation.

Pros
✓ A regular amount of guns and other weapons for a, more or less, balanced gameplay (More guns is always better).
✓ The overall gameplay isn't quite boring, there is plenty of action, unless you're playing on a map only available to paid players, because these maps are usually quite big (I'll talk more about this in the Cons section).
✓ Plenty of maps to play on (This also has a negative side).
✓ 4 different game modes (This also has a negative side).
✓ The possibility to create your own characters and maps is a huge plus. Both editors are (in my opinion) very easy to use and have lots of features to work with.
✓ Steam Workshop.
✓ Achievements and statistics.
✓ ... (More will follow)

Cons
✖ Low amount of paid (non-demo) players.
✖ Not being able to play on different maps and gamemodes than the one provided for demo users.
✖ Too many demo users. This is a huge downside for paid players. Demo users can only play on certain demo servers, but these servers are also available for paid players. Because of the low amount of paid players and the high amount of demo players and the fact that demo players can only play on a couple of maps and on 2 out of the 4 gamemodes, what means that the demo servers only provide those maps and just 2 gamemodes, means you'll almost never play on other maps and different gamemodes as a paid player and because of that will not get a full view of the game.
✖ Some maps available for paid players are just too big to play on. You'll hardly get a full lobby when hosting a map that isn't available for demo users, so with a lower amount of players, certain maps are just too big.
✖ People who try to ruin the experience for other players by griefing, with for example, C4, are frequent.
✖ ... (More will follow)

Mixed
✓/✖ This game has a lot to offer for early access. But when buying the game for the scandalous price of 11,99€, the developers don't tell you, you get a game with broken gameplay. The gameplay may not always be boring and have a high amount of action, but that doesn't mean you can properly play. The developers seem to not have learnt anything out of other games: griefing, spawn killing/destroying, panic knifing, too big maps, using a demo, not to introduce new players to the game, but by letting them dominate it, etc.

Is what you get really worth the full price? In my opinion, absolutely not. There are plenty of other games that provide way more for the same or even a lower price than this game.

And yet I recommend it... All the opinions I have brings me on the edge of good and bad.

5.5/10.

So many 'block' styled games have come out on steam. Some have been bad, and some have been meh. THIS game is very well done! I recieved a coupon for it so I thought, meh why not. I had a really fun time! Suprisingly, I haven't seen any chat saying "lel 1v1 me ♥♥♥ ill qwickscope ur cat 420 yolo" yet. One con is that NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE PLAY THIS GAME! I've had a struggle to get into a populated game! I feel that this would be really fun with alot of people or with your friends at a LAN party, etc. I litterally rate this game 10/10, I can see no major faults on the developers part, no in game microtransactions, and great editing assets! This game is a gem in it's genre!
