Did you like the original Ace of Spades? Do you enjoy the idea of a free form kind of multiplayer, with loose rules on how to play, and room for many different styles of play? Do you enjoy FPS with a bit more of a Battlefield Bad Company esque style of "make your own door" kind of gameplay? Do you like the idea of roles being strictly defined by the player, and how they use their kit, instead of hard coding getting in the way?
I can tell you, I like all of those things. I like those things a lot.
And this game has them all.
Now in seriousness, this game is pretty simple. Its a simplistic FPS with a total of 12 different types of weapons, only 6 of which are "primary" It covers a wide variety of weapon types and playstyles. The special part is that its also a voxel game, with explosives, and destroyable terrain. Meaning fortification, siege warfare, being a sapper is a legitimate role. Collapse a bunker on top of the people inside, send a rocket through the window of a house and flatten it. You will be using explosives to do just about everything, and when you are not, you will be playing the game like any other FPS, other than the face that even without explosives you can still make doors.
I just love the dynamic of the combat, especially in my personal favorite mode, Castle Battle. Both sides gets a fortress, with obvious weaknesses, then 6min to fortify said fort, before combat starts. The objective is to break the chests at the enemies base, which are scattered about it, making so protecting the entire fortress is desirable, instead of stacking on one spot. Roles are clearly defined in this game mode, while not explicitly chosen, which is amazing game design. The guy with the Rocket takes out the hard positions and bunkers, the guy with the C4 gets you into the base by making a door. Snipers accurately pick off the rocket guys on the enemy assault force, and LMGs protect the exterior, while shotguns the interior. While those are not the end all be all roles, those are the ones I perform. You get a sort of feeling of true siege warfare, you try to climb walls, break hardened positions, playing the sneaky beaky infiltrator doing dirty things to the enemy base, and trying to keep yours from falling a part. Battles always get into the late game where both sides forts looking like a patchwork mess, with the valiant defenders, and ardent assaulters scrambling over the ruble to get that last chest.
While not the prettiest game out there, comes with the utilitarian voxel style we all know, and have a love hate relationship with, I can appreciate what is done with it, especially in the character model department. Things can get seriously detailed with the way the voxels are handled on the character model, and even the weapon model. Go take a look at the Workshop and see just how cool some of these things look (save for all the ♥♥♥♥♥ and boobs)
Oh yea, you heard that right, there is a workshop for use created content, and a pretty damn good in game editor for making anything your heart desires, if you can learn to use it. I've made some personal stuff with it myself.
All in all, this game is a gem, and I will continue to play it, but it needs you guys, to make it awesome. We need mappers to make cool maps, People to run servers for those maps, and then players to make them look like crap after a good bout over it. We also need to look really cool while we are doing all of this, so make some models in the mean time.
