Update 1.1.0 coming soon!

Hello sports fans!

We've been hard at work trying to bring STARWHAL to other platforms. But we've got a bunch of features, fixes, and changes we wanted to share with you guys!

The new update will be coming soon, but until then, check out the change log below:

1.1.0
New Stuff!
  • Rounds - They have finally made their triumphant return. It took a bit longer than expected but it is definitely worth the wait! These are also customizable!
  • Music - 7 new tracks, and each world in Versus now has specific songs for that world.
  • Ghosts - You now can set the visibility of the ghosts in challenge mode in the Options menu. Control those phantasms!
  • Languages - You can now set the game interface language to English, French, Spanish, Italian or German. Salut, Guten tag, and buongiorno, international amigos!
  • New Level - "Giant Growth": There is a new special level designed by our Gigaballer Kickstarter backer. The level is massive so the narwhals will feel really tiny on this stage!

Changes:
  • The STARWHAL logo got a cosmetic update. We've also dropped the subtitle from the game, so the game is now just called STARWHAL. To find out more about why we're doing this, please read our post about it here: http://breakfall.ca/content/starwhal-name-change
  • Player Select - Flow has been changed a bit. When you join up, it now starts in the customize screen where you can change Color and Costumes. After that, you're brought to the menu where you can ready up, check controls, or go back to customization.
  • Versus Results Screen - There's now a little bit of anticipation to see who won since all the podiums will rise together before revealing who came in 1st place!
  • Menu navigation with gamepads is now more responsive.
  • Options Screen - now split into 3 different sections (General/Audio/Visual)
  • Challenge Mode: Leaderboard navigation is now done with only one button (Tab/RB) instead of the having a 2 directional navigation.
  • Medals now have a slight shimmer to them. So shiny!
  • More visual details added to menu interface across the board.
  • Countdown - The timer in versus mode will now flash and play a sound for the final 10 seconds of the match. Now you can tell when the match is about to end even if you can't see the timer!
  • Level rename: "Balls Deep" has been renamed to "Bouncy Ball Brawl"
  • Score-based modes (Score Attack, Zones, Heart Throb) now have an indicator of what the maximum score is for that round. So instead of just showing your score (say 10 points), it now displays 10/30 to show how close you are to winning.

Balances/Fixes:
  • Results screen: Each podium in the versus score screen will show a medal if there is a tie for 1st place
  • Heart Throb - The speed dampening for the leader has been reworked. Instead of dampening all velocity and angular velocity of the starwhal, now the propulsion force is slowly reduced. This makes it harder for the leader to get away from getting hit and feels a lot more natural!
  • Player Select - The riders now have a cute bobble animation for when they're selected!
  • The pause screen can no longer be triggered right after a match is finished.
  • Ambient sounds of worlds will no longer play on the title screen.

Costumes:
  • A new challenger appears! The Toto Temple Deluxe rider from our friends at Juicy Beast!
  • AI Costume: AI players will now all have a Monitor Head costume to show that they're out for blood! Resistance is futile! (This costume is reserved for AI players, so mere humans aren't allowed to use it)
  • Wizard hat and beard - You can never have too many beard costumes, and this will let you say YOU SHALL NOT PASS.
  • Tabard - Lets you get medieval on other players' posteriors! Designed by our Gigaballer as well!

What a glorious age we live in, when games like this exist. If you like playing local multiplayer games with friends (Nidhogg, Gang Beasts, Worms, Towerfall), this is a must. LOLs guaranteed.

As someone who has only played the single player challenge modes (I have no friends, so no local co-op), this game is amazing. The challenges are hard enough that they provide entertainment and a challenge, and trying to get whateverthemedalpastgoldis will provide many more hours, yet the game is easy enough that a n00b like me was able to complete all the challenges (medaled, mostly bronze) in just over an hour. Most people are here for the co-op, which I'm sure is spectacular, but the game is fun for just the single player challenges as well.

Plus I made a narwhal that looked like a cat stuck in sushi, what more could you want?!?!?

I got this game during beta and let me tell you: I can't imagine not having this game in my life.

I have played this at parties with my friends, where it is a smashing hit and a great ice-breaker and I have played it by myself with one hand pretending to be a random CPU player and one hand actually trying. My girlfriend loves the game, and it's hard not to! You can dress your narwhal as anything you could want (like jedi knights, burritos, and more!!), and as far as entertainment goes, this game is second to none.

My one request is that later on online playing be incorporated (for all of us who lack frequent human contact).

Buy it now!

I'm a little bias but if you are looking for a unique local multiplayer game and a great time with friends I've heard from others that this is an excellent game to have in your library. Give it a try, you might just like its quirky nature.

Upgrade your existence.

I'm gonna be frank. I want to love this game, but I hate it. Why? No Online Multiplayer.

That's pretty much -the- reason for every one of the negative reviews you read about this game. Sadly most of them focus on curse words and whining rather than pointing out why this is so truly detrimental to what could have been a new favorite for gamers everywhere.

It has SO much potential to be a super fun party game. Really, it does. But it ultimately fails, because it's for local multiplayer only, which means if you want to play you'll need four controllers for your COMPUTER. This is certainly not the world's most unfathomable setup, but it's about as normal as someone having a full blown flight simulator with an Oculus rift in their basement. Possible? Yes. Common? Absolutely not.

Now to be fair, there are spots in the description that call the game 'local multiplayer', and it doesn't mention 'online' anywhere. But to be honest, if you're planning on buying a game about neon colored cetaceans murdering one another in space, you're probably (like me) not going to read the description in enough detail to recognize the reality. Plus, Steam is built around online multiplayer gaming, leading to the natural assumption that games offered via steam have some form of online gameplay. This sadly culminates in a potentially great game turning into a hugely misleading waste of money. Making matters worse, the game is marketed almost solely around the fact that it's fun to play with friends, furthering the confusion as most PC gamers would never think about playing games with friends while sharing a screen.

I hate having to be so harsh on a game due to one limiting factor, but in Starwhal's case that limiting factor really is the end-all-be-all, and the lack of an online multiplayer is huge. If I could, I'd be requesting a refund from Steam for both my copy and the one I bought for my best friend (who lives several states away and CANNOT play local multiplayer with me). My advice is to save your money and see if the developers ever implement an online multiplayer... until they do, this game is a complete waste of $10 (or in my case $20), and easily the Steam purchase I regret the most.

Major, major disappointment.

Fun game if you're playing with friends (especially friends you just wanna pierce in the heart). Controls take a while to get used to but eventually become second nature. Graphics and special effects are brilliant and the music is pretty upbeat. It lacks online multiplayer but does have in-game ghosts to beat in challenge mode.

I got the game back at FanExpo 2014 for $10 I had very little knowlage of what I was buying. I saw some people playing so I took a risk and bought it. Best risk I've ever taken. I love it. Its fun, and you can use it with smaller children if you get some controllers. Good single player to, Im exited for it to have its full release. Good luck Breakfall mrmeow2000

Have you ever wanted to partake in a merciless narwhal space orgy? If the answer is no, you're a lying sack of fetal membranes! This game features all of the chaotic narwhal combat you will ever want and need! Plus it's local multiplayer so you can challenge the whole family to a wonderful round of Starwhal! Then ruin their self esteem by telling them that they're a pathetic disapointment for not being equal to your Flailing Narwhal technique and that they should be ashamed to bear the same last name as you: THE STARWHAL SUPER SAIYAN.

I'd give it 4 stars for now. This is one the most epic games where you can play mulitplayer with just 1 computer and some ps3 or xbox controllers. It has good ps3 controller compatibility but only annoying thing is the controls that you have to do in the menu. X to accept and O to go back. and to open up bots and player controlled characters, you have to use a ps3 combination like ^ + X + R1. For now, it is a game mainly for windows as i am experiencing some troubleshooting on my macbook air. although it still runs smoothly on 1.3 GHz, i cannot open the game on fullscreen as it will get stuck on the loading screen. To fix this, i changed the opening method to windowed mode. But all the more it is still in early access and i am eagerly waiting for the upcoming updates for this game. highly recommended for people who want to have good competitive fun with family and friends.

This is a local multiplayer gem that even your non gaming friends can enjoy. Extremely accessible, great variety in game modes, and gives the feeling that anyone could win. Highly recommended.
