STARWHAL v1.1.1

Version 1.1.1

We've been hard at work bringing space narwhal combat to other platforms, and in the process we've made lots of improvements to the game we want to share with our Steam friends! (Yes, YOU!)

Balances/Fixes:
  • Ice Blocks: The calculation to determine if and when an ice block should shatter has been modified. Now the angle of impact has a greater effect, so sliding along a piece of ice won’t break it as easily, especially in levels such as Frostburn and Ice and Fire
  • Fixed an issue where multiple players could select the same color narwhal in the player select screen
  • Fixed an issue in the Challenge levels Escalation and Wave where the player could potentially die on spawn
  • Fixed an issue with team mode where sometimes the players don’t get assigned to the correct team
  • Fixed an issue with the sludge in Challenge levels where the player could continue to die after the first death on a run
  • Results screen: Fixed an issue where the Tag and Capture count were being incremented on a hazard hit
  • Localization: Versus score screen had an error when playing team mode on Score Attack

Optimization:
  • A lot of work has gone into optimizing many parts of the game including level geometry and collision, AI pathfinding, and hazards. Many levels should have significant performance boosts and should be capable of running much more smoothly on older machines!
    • Versus: Mobius, Amoeba, Perch, Tumble Dry, Squall, Giant Growth, Slippery Slope
    • Challenge: Escalation, Spin Cycle, Stream Sailor, Centrifuge, Factory
  • The AI has been significantly improved on several of the Versus levels:
    • Classic, Mobius, Amoeba, Perch, Time Spiral, Pneumatic, Tarkus II, Squall, Giant Growth, Frostburn, Glacial Pass, Slush Puppy

Changes:
  • XInput: Controllers can now use XInput on Windows PCs. Just go into the Options screen and you’ll be able to enable/disable XInput. With it enabled, you’ll be able to reconnect a disconnected controller without having to reboot the game, yay!
  • Controller input is now locked as soon as a match is over

Costumes:
  • Viking Squad Costumes! SKOL!! Check out the game here: Viking Squad

I got this game during beta and let me tell you: I can't imagine not having this game in my life.

I have played this at parties with my friends, where it is a smashing hit and a great ice-breaker and I have played it by myself with one hand pretending to be a random CPU player and one hand actually trying. My girlfriend loves the game, and it's hard not to! You can dress your narwhal as anything you could want (like jedi knights, burritos, and more!!), and as far as entertainment goes, this game is second to none.

My one request is that later on online playing be incorporated (for all of us who lack frequent human contact).

Buy it now!

I'm a little bias but if you are looking for a unique local multiplayer game and a great time with friends I've heard from others that this is an excellent game to have in your library. Give it a try, you might just like its quirky nature.

Upgrade your existence.

What a glorious age we live in, when games like this exist. If you like playing local multiplayer games with friends (Nidhogg, Gang Beasts, Worms, Towerfall), this is a must. LOLs guaranteed.

Fun game if you're playing with friends (especially friends you just wanna pierce in the heart). Controls take a while to get used to but eventually become second nature. Graphics and special effects are brilliant and the music is pretty upbeat. It lacks online multiplayer but does have in-game ghosts to beat in challenge mode.

"Starwhal" is one of the best couch co-op games ever. Not just because it involves narwhals, 80's music, or neon lights. It is one of the best because it is ludicrously simple to pick up. "A" for accelerate, "X" for taunt, and obviously stick to move. It is a great party game because of its simplicity and sheer hilarity. So go ahead, plug in the Xbox 360 controllers, gather round and...

As someone who has only played the single player challenge modes (I have no friends, so no local co-op), this game is amazing. The challenges are hard enough that they provide entertainment and a challenge, and trying to get whateverthemedalpastgoldis will provide many more hours, yet the game is easy enough that a n00b like me was able to complete all the challenges (medaled, mostly bronze) in just over an hour. Most people are here for the co-op, which I'm sure is spectacular, but the game is fun for just the single player challenges as well.

Plus I made a narwhal that looked like a cat stuck in sushi, what more could you want?!?!?

I used to play the original starwhal game, and I was very excited when this came out. The game had lots of neat features added, but I was disappointed that there was no online multiplayer. Even the starwhal's movement had changed. In the original version, they were difficult to control but you could still move them where you wanted, but now it's almost impossible to go anywhere. Not worth 15.00, more like $3-$5.

Early Access Review
This high-quality game is a glorious battle between the majestic fighters of space. To win you need to pierce as much enemys hearts as possible. The Honourous protagonist you play as has his weapon always with him, ready to fight. it can be fought in teams to double the winners. They embrace a fateful battle about the one who holds the strength to lead, to destroy all his enemies.

I have seena few negative review that talk about the impracise controls, i would dispute them by saying that the controls are, if anything, too precise. The twitch of a thumbstick unerringly points the tip of the starwhal horn in a new fabulous direction, but only the horn. New players will need to get used to this. You can't turn the whale, just the tip o fthe horn. Once you understand this conept, the controls are actually fairly simple and precise. The gameplay is like a rainbow that has been crushed into crysaline form and mainlined through your eyeballs, it is fast paced and frantic couch coop in it purinst sense. I often throw this game up on a big projecter and it always draws crowds. People will scream when the horns start getting close to the enemy hearts and the camera zooms in for a slow motion shot.
This game is absolutely amazing when ti works. Luckely it works more often than not, but there are still a few issues, such as frequent lag on levels with moving parts, that keep from being the best game ever.

This is a game you can play with friends, even if they don't game. If you are having people over, this is a great ice-breaker.

I don't think skill plays a massive part in this game. Everyone can enjoy it. It is just plain fun. Get 4 controllers, 3 friends, and go! Would definitely recommend

Starwhal is a very silly local multiplayer fighting game with many interesting gamemodes. This game is the only game that I know of with flying space narwhals. I love this game because of its local multiplayer and pvp functions aswell as the wiered controls and physics. Starwhal will always be my favorite space-narwhal game.

I got the game back at FanExpo 2014 for $10 I had very little knowlage of what I was buying. I saw some people playing so I took a risk and bought it. Best risk I've ever taken. I love it. Its fun, and you can use it with smaller children if you get some controllers. Good single player to, Im exited for it to have its full release. Good luck Breakfall mrmeow2000
