From the creator of Chip's Challenge comes the latest update for Chuck’s Challenge 3D, which includes a loads of savoury snacks:

FEATURES

  • Mouse Menu Scrolling GUI - For mouse users, buttons will appear near the side of the screen when you move the mouse close to the edge.
  • 5 Second Penalty - when you undo you'll get a 5 seconds added to your time now instead of 1. Plus there is a little animation.
  • Clone Machine Effect - objects that the clone machine will create now have a GFX.
  • Deep Links - you'll be able to create a web URL that not only opens Chuck's Challenge 3D in Steam, but it will also download & play a particular levelid.

BUGS
  • Hat Notification - this was being over active and so will now actually tell you when you have a new hat.
  • Hat Memory - the interface remembers what hat you were wearing.
  • Local & Server Levels - the game shouldn't get confused by these and local levels will be marked as 'local' in the levelid field.

Things that we are working on but are being more default then we thought:
  • Thumbnails - this one is just being mean as some old versions are over writing the new nice thumbnails, so we need a solution that gets the server and the game working together.
  • Game Logic & Undo - this is work in progress because it is huge.
  • Surprise - other fun stuff but it wouldn't be a surprise if we told you what it was ːcc3dwhoopː

Lite bug bits for Snappy

We've just done a mini Steam update that's fixed a few bits & bobs you helped us find:

  • Create - Hand tool is working again so you can make big maps again
  • Create - Controller second pad now moves the Game Grid
  • Controller - the Logitech F710 is now supported
We know it's been a while since we've done a bigger update but that's because we are plotting ;)

Chuck’s Challenge 3D includes four different game modes:

PLAY – through 125 levels, with your best times published online
CREATE – your own levels with over 70+ Game Elements & share them with the world
SEARCH – download levels created by other players
WEEKLY PUZZLE – play the best user created level of the week

Meet Woop, just your everyday puzzle lovin’ purple alien capable of altering time and space. Woop has summoned all-round puzzle game legend Chuck Sommerville for one purpose - to create a universe of puzzles for him to work his way out of. Take control of Woop and help him navigate his way through level after level of obstacles and challenges that stand between him and reaching the exit portal. Shift blocks, find keys, flip switches, wade through water, hot-foot it through lava and do everything it takes to make it out in one piece and evade an army of hungry creatures who want nothing more than to turn our purple hero into a nice ‘n tasty Woop Sandwich.

After 4 months of development & play testing this new version comes first to Steam.

The follow-up to Chip's Challenge for the Atari Lynx and Windows 3.1. You can tell it was optimized for things like iOS and Android, but this is still a worthwhile follow-up to the original tile-based puzzler.

I must mention: The menus, the characters, and the levels elements are like an oversized dollop of cottage cheese: big and chunky. Plus the navigation of menus is just odd, where you use the mouse like you would a finger on a touchscreen. But PC optimization issues aside, it's your job to solve the puzzles as Woop. And yeah, he's no Chip, but the little bugger does have charm, I'll give him that.

As for the gameplay, well, it's Chip's Challenge 2.0, and that's precisely why I threw my money at the screen in the first place. If you're not familiar with that game, it's a tile-based Sokoban-like game where you have an area filled with locked doors and hazards, and it’s your goal to collect the required items before exiting the level. For the most part, it's the same game with new puzzles and a new look. Like, you're not collecting chips here, but little glowing blue things, and the enemies look totally different. But a lot of the puzzle elements are the same, like water, fire, ice, moving floors, etc. And you still have the same types of power-ups that let you circumvent these hazards where appropriate. There are five sets of levels to complete with 25 levels each, but the first selection more or less follows the rules of the original game. When you move beyond those, the game really starts to open up into its own thing, with a slew of new enemies, hazards, and puzzle components. It never has to give you a dumb tutorial either, since the rules of upcoming levels are clearly laid out for you with an easier level earlier on. But don't let the first set of levels fool you, this game can be just as brutal as its predecessor.

Well sort of. It's a bit easier as well, with the ability to take back any number of moves at any time. This means you don't necessarily have to restart the entire level if you screw up, so no bummers here. Time keeps ticking while you do this, but it's far less rage-inducing to make a stupid mistake now. It even asks you if you want to skip a level if you suck to the point of shaming your ancestors. The levels are also far smaller than many of those in Chip's Challenge, and I assume this is because of the time and screen size constraints of the mobile version. And when you finish off or rage quit the main game, there's a fully-featured, easy-to-use level editor. You can upload your own or download other people's creations right from within the game. Oh and you can apparently get hats, because freaking hats man, why developers haven't shoehorned them into every game already is beyond me.

Personally, I find Chuck's Challenge to be a perfectly adequate successor to Chip's Challenge. It's more of the same kind of logical puzzle-solving with only a few concessions made for mobile platforms and slightly more forgiving gameplay. But even with a few iffy changes, if you enjoyed the original game or just enjoy these types of logic games, I'd give this one a look.

This was hard for me to downvote. I love block puzzles and I think Chuck Sommerville is a master of puzzle design. His genius lies in the simplicity and elegance of the levels. When a level is so small and has so few moving parts, you can only blame yourself for not seeing that one small element you were overlooking the whole time. I love that. I thoroughly completed this game, gaining nearly all the gold medals and single-digit rankings on roughly half of the levels; cracking the code of the simple yet devious puzzle designs brought me hours upon hours of bliss.

Unfortunately, that's where the positive points end. Puzzle design aside, nearly every single aspect of this game is ruined by shoddy interface and fearsome bugs.

The ability to undo moves, while very welcome, is so horribly broken that dozens of user-created levels have been made to illustrate all the different ways it can be abused.

Various timing bugs exist in the game which make hunting for the #1 score on the leaderboard pointless. While it is welcome that the game rewards you for even tying the high score, the high score was usually acquired by someone’s lucky run where the timer skipped, started too late, or a rewind glitch was used.

Menus are clearly optimized for touchscreens and are downright difficult to control with a mouse. You need to use the mouse to "drag" the screen horizontally, and using keys glitch out if you use them too fast.

Thumbnail screenshots for user-designed levels are a disaster, as they frequently change, resize themselves, disappear, and even appear on the incorrect levels. Stats and leaderboards for user-created levels are inconsistent between the official site and the in-game browser; the same level will have different leaderboards and different star-rankings depending on where you look.

While all that is annoying, the number one sin of this game is its in-game control scheme, bringing back terrible memories of slipping and sliding around in the NES version of Boulder Dash. While movement is tile-based like Sokoban, the main character moves smoothly from one tile to the next, which allows for time-based leaderboards to exist. Unfortunately, this means that if you want to make any kind of quick or complex movements, you need to press the keys a half second ahead of time. Hold the key for a millisecond too long and you’ll go sliding off your intended path and into a death trap. Whereas most Sokoban games (Like Chip's Challenge) use the keyboard buffer to delay your movements, or make the character move slow enough that you can mentally queue your movements, the main challenge of Chuck’s Challenge comes from just getting your character to move where you want, rather than the block puzzles themselves. Even though I conquered this game, I never completely got used to it, and it made in-game movements an unpleasant and frustrating experience from beginning to end. That’s just not what I want in a Sokoban game.

I’ll update this review if a patch fixes any bugs, but for now I’ll say that you should only buy this game if you appreciate block puzzles so much that brilliant level design outweighs bad controls and numerous other flaws. Everyone else should pass.

Being a 90's child I never got to experience Chip's Challenge so getting my hands on Chuck's challenge is a breath of fresh air. I am not a huge puzzle game fan but I even found myself entertain by these adorable yet complex puzzles. If you're looking for a relaxing and enjoyable puzzler look no further Chuck's Challenge is great.

Simply put, if you love puzzle games then you will love Chuck's Challenge 3D. The game not only provides plenty of brain teasing puzzles but remains addictive throughout. Don't let the charming visuals and upbeat soundtrack fool you either, this game is not afraid to challenge players. Chuck's Challenge 3D is a game packed with hours of entertainment and is an essential purchase for any self respecting puzzle fan. Whether you're looking for a fix to that hole left inside of you from old memories of playing Chips Challenge as a kid or wanting to try out a nice new puzzle game, you're going to enjoy this game!
I originally felt this modern creation would take away the original feel of Chips Challenge but I was surprised when that wasn't the case. It's just as equally brain teasing as it ever was, just now in an environment more suited to our wants and needs in 2014. The graphics look lovely, and whilst the tilt shift style effect takes a bit of getting used to it all becomes part of it's charm that you will come to love.

It has loads of levels to offer you, plus the opportunity to play maps made by others and the ability to make your own so you won't be short of things to do. Before long I found myself trying to find the quickest ways to finish to get up in the rankings, which becomes an additional challenge even after you've finished everything.

You won't regret getting this game at all, I thoroughly recommend it!
