At this time - anno domini 2014 - my Shmup collection is starting to be pretty much complete.

So which game shines the brightest? Well that would have to be this old runt of a shooter game.

This game is the closest equivalent of giving a shotgun to a hobo with crooked teeth and thinking it's a great idea. It stinks, it's ugly but damn it's awesome at the same time.

What to expect when you fire this game up: Weird practice area where you can test gun setups. then a crappy looking shop that got a TV-Shop like selection of guns.

So grab some guns, test them if you like and go do some missions. Early missions will be hard as hell and the difficulty level will be kept quite high for quite some time - until you either read from guides what you should concentrate on - or buy and test guns until you find the ones that match your style. Difficulty actualy goes down as go further into the game and kit your new ships better and learn the ropes. New challenging bosses come to yank the difficulty up but you are prepared. Or should be. Did i mention this game is quite hard - but fair if you do your testing/homework on the testing arena.

Still have not completed the game but i do seem to be 2/3 trough at this time and it's been an awesome ride. I also expect to re-play this game at some point with different approach to loadouts.

Best things last: this game is dirt cheap, is often discounted or found in the bundles. If you like shumps you really do MUST have this game in your library. It really is that good that i will from now on use this game as a reference when comparing games.

Not insanely difficult but your skills will be tested. I like the customizable weapons. 2D graphics are great, there are some serious explosions going on and the music rocks!

One of the most addictive retro styled sideways schmup you can hope to play. Hours will simply vanish as you shoot waves after waves, tens of hundreds of thousands of beautifully and sometimes hilariously designed enemies. Chuckle at helpless infantry on ground levels as you rain death upon their helpless sprite corpses... chuckle even more at the silly comic book 'plot' that really has no bearing on the shooting, but is a funny chuckle nonetheless (USF Impotent, hah...).

This isn't a 'danmaku' ie bullet hell game where you're expected to dodge every bullet, this is just a straightforward 'tank and spank' style of shooter where common sense tells you to avoid anything big looking, but small shots can simply be ignored as dodging takes too much time and takes away from the business of Blowing ♥♥♥♥ Up(tm).

Well worth the price for the entertainment it provides.

This is a game of my hearth. Where do i begin?

Soundtrack by Machinae Supremacy is absolutely a "must hear". Game is hard in beginnings (gets even harder in GOLD edition), but gets much easier and fur more rewarding later when you get access to top weapons (S.T.Y.X, Omnigun NT2, Tsunami generator...). Sometimes i catch myself just holding the fire button, randomly crashing in everything that is on the screen knowing it won't hurt me anyway and feasting upon an image of ultimate destruction and chaos - this is how i imagine apocalypse.

Nevertheless, I personally like the original version more, as it was a bit easier (didn't have to buy Mig and got it on the third level + get access to top weapons before finishing the game was nice). New levels in GOLD edition are not bad, they are just not as much fun. There are exceptions, of course, but mostly - it just prolongs the game time. I love new weapons, which, sadly, appear after you finish the game at least once, however their pricing is way - WAY - too high. You will find out, that in order to fully equip your ship with, for example hydra machinegun, you are going to have to finish the game like four times, which is absurd, since the power of that weapon doesn't get anywhere close to Tsunami beta, which is much cheaper. That said - there are some ubalanced things that need to be corrected.

Jets'n'Guns is a love story about two star-crossed lovers hoping that fate will bring them together.

Honestly, the game is called Jets'n'Guns. You get a jet, put guns on it, and blow up a bunch of dudes for money. You then take said money, buy bigger jets and bigger guns (or upgrade your existing guns) so that you can blow up dudes faster to get bigger jets and guns.

Oh, and you can pick up galactic hitchhikers.

Do you like shumps? Then buy this. Do you hate shumps? Buy this anyway and you might change your mind.

Probably one of the finest shoot 'em ups ever made!!!! I remember playing this back on an old Mac and having a great time, just as good today!!! I seem to remember being able to replay levels to earn money, maybe removing this was part of the re-balancing. Anyway, incredible game, highly recommended!

This is a game i played on my old computer, long before i even had a steam account, and till i found it on steam i thought i had lost it with that old computer. It is an amazing cathartic destructive shmup with reasonably well writting humor and, my favorite part, a vast array of mechanized ways to tear a hole in the universe. including a gun that fires miniature universes! The game is incredibally fun and is damn near perfect in my opinion, however it has one crippling flaw, terrible gimmick levels that limit your gear, make you super weak, or even force you to do a race with absolutely no shooting where missing a single goalpost fails you and to win you have to memorize the pattern which you see for seconds at a time. Luckily those gimmick levels are few and far between and aside from the smirch they leave on the constantly exploding perfection of this game they are otherwise tedious but ignorable. So if you like big guns, bigger explosions, and space-worthy winnebegos this is the game for you!

First thing I noticed when I started this game up: the sound track ♥♥♥♥ing rules. Don't believe me? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6oAcZ93hNY

As a sidescrolling shmup you're gonna see a lot of bullets but it's ok, your ship has tons of hp so being hit isn't instant death.

That's right you can get hit, and it's not that big a deal--as long as it isn't another ship ramming into you, if that happens you die in a frustrating instant.

As you progress you upgrade and swap your ship--you start rockin a little harder with each level. There's always more things to kill than your ship can fire at and to make things worse you end up juggling weapon cooldown. Lame.

The difficulty in this game stems from brief sections where the game floods you with tons of ships and bullets at the same time. You want to dodge the bullets but the only direction you can fly is into another ship, which will kill you faster than the bullets.

Oh and one more thing. There's a delay in pressing any directional button, frustrating imprecision I'd expect from an ice level in a shoddy platformer, not the super precise power genre of shmup games. Fix it or I'm calling a lawyer.

A classic-style shoot-em-up where destroying enemies gives you money to buy new planes, weapons, and upgrades. Anything you buy, you can sell back at full price, so you can experiment with configurations as much as you want. Infinite lives and mid-level checkpoints mean that you're never in danger of losing too much progress. Overall, a fun, intense game that rewards persistence and eperimentation. My only complaint is that there's a lot of flashes and explosions on the screen at times, making it difficult to tell at a glance where you can and can't safely go - and sometimes, a glance is all you have time for.

JETS’N’GUNS! It delivers what it promises, but the ship doesn’t look like a jet, BUT THAT’S ALRIGHT CAUSE YOU GET TO SHOOT THE HELL OUT OF EVERYTHING! I’m sad that I found this game so late. I should be shot into the sun for that.

This has become one of my all time favorite games. Its a horizontal shooter with the ability to “pimp your ship”. Choose a body, load it up with guns and fly out. ALSO, the game allows you to sell your stuff for the same price you bought it for, so go nuts and play around with the loadout to your hearts content. That alone made it a standout game and something to recommend to anyone new to shoot-em-ups.

If you’re a beginner, or just aren’t good at these types of games, start on “Too fat to die” so you can build currency. Every time you beat the game the game goes up a difficulty level and a good deal of them you can only access on beating the game through additional playthroughs and certain guns you can only get by playing on higher difficulties. ALSO your currency carries over in each playthrough.

A word to the wise. Their are several segments where you’ll be asked to leave your ride for another one. While some can be annoying, others can be enjoyable and help break up the monotony. Also, aftr going through one that drove you nuts makes getting back to shooting everything in your own ship of choice that much sweeter.

The only complaint I have with the game is that once these segments are over, you need to retweak your ship and the fact that you cannot save loadouts. Its annoying, but not enough for me to turn people away from it.

Its an old game, but its an old game that hold up VERY WELL. If you call yourself a fan of the shoot-em-up genre you are doing yourself a disservices by passing this up.

It's the way a sidescrolling shooter should be: the old school of creating tons of fun with simple game mechanic, customization that makes gives you hundreds of ways to lay waste on your enemies and a soundtrack that fits the blasting firework on your screen!
I love it! I was looking years for a game that is a worthy successor to my beloved "raptor: call of the shadows" I found it last decade in Jets n Guns and I bought it again on steam. Despite graphics have come to age, Gameplay, and this twisted sense of humour (greetings to Douglas Adams) make this game worth your while.

I can't even explain to you how much I like this game.
I remember playing the heck out of this back in the days.
If you've never played this before, get this when it's cheap and thank me later.
