X-mas event + Free game

X-Mas Event for everyone
It is that christmassy time of the year again, as you might know in order to properly celebrate you need to eat lots of turkey and candy while not exploding and also smash lots of snowmen to snowy bits.

Everyone can do that starting now in Last Knight, both the Big X-mas Chow Down mode and the Big X-mas Mow Down mode are unlocked for everyone and that also includes everyone who don't even own the game! Just download the special X-Mas demo on the store page:

Halloween Event and some Making Of

It is Halloween! Already, in Last Knight! In this little Halloween event you will be able to find lots of Pumpkin hats in the Endless modes. The horned bucket heads, skeletons and other rider will wear various pumpkins as well. If you happen to encounter ghosts, don't worry they are just common encounters at Halloween and are pretty harmless. Some of them are likely your dead previous selfs since you likely got wasted a lot since you first set a horse foot in this world.

The update also includes a small fix for a really rare case were some of the levels would not generate properly on start sometimes and the player gets stuck.

Some Making Of

It has been some time since the game released and I'm currently busy with making 2 new games but lets take a minute to reminisce with some bits of the development (hell):
Note: Most of these bits show more or less unintended results which are often of a amusing nature.

Here is something of more substance in terms of making of. This shows how I sculpted most of environment assets as very high resolution Zbrush sculpts which are then baked to models with much lower poly counts.

The grass for instance is actually modeled in various variations and then baked to planes.

Here is the bat as a Zbrush sculpt and as the final model in the engine:

A lot of the characters had been mostly modeled as high poly meshes instead of sculpted which works best for clear defined shapes like the knight's armor:

Here you can see the low poly version. The goal was always to make it as low as possible while remaining most of the silhouette. A lot of the high poly detail and smoothness takes over to the low poly through a baked normal map texture. It basically fakes the low poly model to look like a high poly model. This technique is still a standard in current games. While polygon counts keep rising it won't go away anytime soon.

For the skeleton I did something special in terms of animation. I used motion capture to record my movements using the Kinect. It was a bit tricky to get working:

But later I got it working and with a few tweaks I got this:

So the next time you behead a skeleton keep in mind that really it is a projection of me! (I have more fingers though.) I also motion captured all the other creatures. No just kidding, it was the skeleton exclusively, doing any anything different then humanoid motion capture is rather tricky.

About This Game

Last Knight is a unique genre mix that combines platforming, action-packed riding
and ragdoll physics driven jousting! It is fast-paced action in a never ending randomly generated Unreal Engine powered fantasy world!

The story mode put it's player in control of a squire on its way of becoming a knight. But before he can prove himself, events of epic proportions make him the last hope for the kingdom! On his heroic adventure he will have to fight the horned bucket heads and oversized hungry creatures. He will have to get through a wide range of dangerous environments as well as his own Knightmares. But beside the story there is much more. Various game modes let you adventure through always different never ending generated worlds filled with riches and dangers. Gold can be spent on fancy power ups, while chivalry can unlock world bending mutators and different view modes like the intense first person view. Endless "rider" with tons of modes, challenge levels and a bunch of goofy hats to collect. Also a story mode and an uprade system. Seriously, seriously a fun game, and this is coming from someone who usually despises the endless runner-type genre.

I've got an additional 20+ hours in the original non-Steam release of Last Knight, so the number of hours reflected in my Steam playtime aren't an accurate representation of the total time I've actually put into the game (FYI, the Rogue Rider edition is superior but the two versions are similar in playstyle).

Anyway, I've owned Last Knight for quite a while now and I adore it. This review was a long time coming, but props to the devs for creating such a fantastic little gem.

Highly recommended for people with bad eating habits. I've never been so terrified of donuts and cheeseburgers in my life. Also for those with fat and exploding fetishes.

Oh and the game is pretty damn good too. The raising and lowering of the lance can be a bit wonky at time and aiming it favors the right side just a tad, but otherwise that aspect is pretty cool. I also don't really like that it's possible for enemies to spawn just behind jump only sections and make it very hard to land and lance almost simultaneously. Ragdoll physics can be pretty hilarious too.

Overall yes I recommend it. It's very enjoyable and quite comical.

It is really good at what it does. You have 5 buttons to use, of which you mostly use 4: left, right, attack, jump. That's it and when you get to the harder levels, you will be glad that there is nothing more to worry about. The game does have a cliché medieval atmosphere, but never ever takes itself seriously at all. The humor is fun if you are 6 years old, or if you sometimes long to be a 6 years old again.

Don't expect to much from the campaign: it is just a kind of extended tutorial and hardly contains any content that it not elsewhere in the game too. The endless runner mode however is great. Graphics and controls are very well working together: the graphics give you a sense of motion and chaos, while the controls keep things structured for you. Very well executed.

- The only thing I don't like about the game is that I always have to hear this annoying sound when I die, and always need to press a button to indicate that - no, thank you - I don't need to see myself die in slow-motion AGAIN. But this is just because I die so ofter ;).
