Estranged Act II Progress

We haven't talked about Act II with the community for a long time, and our last news post was a postmortem of Act I's release. We feel that now is the right time to talk a bit more about the project's sequel, and about our development process.

Content Progress
Content is the single biggest task that we will undertake for Act II, and the team has been slowly building Act II out from where Act I left off. Our story begins after the fisherman falls through the rotten floor of an old wood shack, and picks up again where he lands in the rocks below the Arque West facility.

As a team, we have many commitments - some of us have jobs, some of us are studying towards final qualifications. Act I garnered no income, so Act II has always been and will always be a hobby project. A few people have asked us what is happening with Act II, and when it will be finished. In the future we hope to do a better job of communicating those ideas with the community, and we are still working hard on continuing where Act I left off.

Technical Progress
For Act II, we have decided to switch away from the Source Engine, towards Unreal Engine 4. Unreal Engine 4 provides a very flexible platform to author content for a range of platforms, and allows us to realise our plans for Act II. It is updated frequently, and has an active community monitored by its developers which provides technical assistance amongst other great things.

Content authoring for Source Engine wasn't easy, and it was difficult to author more advanced features for Act I without access to the engine code from Valve - which unfortunately for us is not something we can get access to as a free game.

Join the Team
We are always looking for people to join us - if you would like to make content with us and be part of the Estranged team, get in touch at volunteer@iamestranged.com

“It’s clear that the creators are striving for atmosphere above all else. The locations themselves all feel grounded and part of the world and optional extras like newspaper cuttings and even usable computers add more pieces to the puzzle”

About This Game

Estranged tells the story of a lone fisherman, whose ship is stranded on a mysterious island during a violent storm.

Explore the rich environments and meet the curious inhabitants of the island as you find a way back to the mainland. Face both danger and intrigue in this perilous adventure, where you will soon find that not everything is as normal as it seems.

Features

Original Gameplay and Story - The game features around an hour of story driven gameplay. It includes a completely original cast, with a carefully crafted script to bring the Estranged world to life.

Amazing Graphics - Estranged is built on the same engine Half-Life 2 runs, with some additional features. We have extended the dynamic lighting system to allow us to illuminate our levels in a realistic manner, and have included effects such as film grain and lens flare to help create the atmosphere for the game.

Original Soundtrack - The soundtrack was written especially for Estranged, and was designed alongside the game's levels. The music matches gameplay, and helps to bring together the atmosphere in Estranged to bring the story to life.

Please note: This game uses some assets from Half-Life: 2. The two worlds are unrelated, and Estranged is not associated with the Half-Life franchise or Valve Corporation.

Kudos to Alan Edwardes for producing a great little mod that’s both polished and enjoyable. The source engine has been used well to create a good-looking game that ran without a glitch except for one problem with an achievement which I managed to fix but was a little annoying. The voice acting is pretty good. The mix of simple problem solving and combat is just right, giving the game a nice balanced feel. Overall this is a fun way to spend a few hours and it’s free, so what more could you want?

A short game, Estranged: Act 1 delivers a compelling performance of a fisherman, who gets stranded on an island during a storm. You meet several people: some good, some very bad, who will help or hurt you as you go along your path. The game is made on the source engine, and uses many of the Half-Life elements and features from it.

Being a free-to-play game, I entered this game not expecting much but a few cheap dialogs and meaningless character development for the sake of it only being the first of the series. Surprisingly, the game delivered more than what it offered, such as an enticing tale of a man's struggle to help those who he encoutered and also kicking a few butts along the way.

The game abruptly ends though, leaving the want for Act 2 to come fairly soon. I was honestly suprised by all of the elements in this game, as well as most of the visuals being such great quality. If you do try this game, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Where's the 2nd act?! Estranged puts the player in a very alien environment with no backstory and lets the player deduce exactly what's going on with this island that you have crash landed at. The game precedes to take you through several situations in which you need to problem solve and find the best way out to survive, while providing some varying locations and an interesting dynamic of storytelling through meeting other characters or even small things like reading the e-mail of an absent Arque employee. All of this enjoyment basically comes to an abrupt halt though with the game's ending. It provides an effective cliffhanger, but the only problem with having a cliffhanger is eventually finishing your story and provide closure for the player. This, sadly, has not been done by the creators of this game. Besides that, the game's visual presentation is done very well and makes the Half Life 2 engine definitely a force to be reckoned with. Great and thrilling experience, this game definitely warrants a sequel. I mean..... I enjoyed what this game had to offer a lot more than the original Half Life and if that doesn't say something, I don't know what does.

If you liked Half Life, and Half Life 2, then Estranged is for you. Story is very vague in the beginning and may take a while to really get into it, but once you do, the story unfolds slowly and you are like: "this all makes sense now."
Playing through Estranged, i was constantly looking behind myself or checking to see how much more battery my trusty Flashlight had left before i was plunged into the eery darkness that Estranged does so well. This game is not perfect by any means, but having toyed with game making many a time myself, all i can say is that there was some major time and effort put into this installment of Estranged. I give Estranged Act 1 a big thumbs up on the originality and replay scale.
