Varför Early Access?


Imagine how sausage is made. Now imagine the early stages of that, and you are given some unseasoned, probably gross tasting, bits of a prototype of the sausage. Upon eating the proto-sausage, you find it is bland, flavorless, and makes your tummy feel funny. You relay this info to the Sausage Engineers and they come up with a new version of the sausage that no longer makes your tummy feel funny, but still doesn’t taste that great. After repeating this process over and over and over, you are presented with an absolutely decadent piece of sausage that simply tastes amazing AND has zero calories! Guess what, that’s all thanks to you, buddy. You were instrumental in helping those Sausage Engineers make that sausage amazing. You get free sausage for life or something cool like that.

If that sounds like a fun ordeal to you, then my friend, you are ready to participate in Early Access! If this does not sound appealing to you and you’re expecting a finished, fun, and polished game, please come back later when the game is finished. Please please PLEASE do not play this if you are not prepared for lots of bugs, things being completely not fun or broken, and constant patches.

If you are prepared for that, I have some neato news. You will have a front row seat during this game’s creation, and play a crucial role in helping us figure out stuff. We’re a small team, and could really use your help making this game. Seriously, not joking here. Making games is REALLY DIFFICULT and larger companies can throw a crapload of money at focus testing to get feedback and see what works. This is why we need your help! Patch Notes - Beta1: 0.5.5 - 9/9/2015
New Stuff
  • Player skills are in! You can now gain skills doing various things. Right now it’s mostly gathering stuff. Mining nodes, fabric nodes, and mineral nodes (for glass) have been placed around Griffin’s Roost and Rivets Aisle.
  • First phase of resource refining added to harvester buildings. This will be a work in progress over a few patches. More details on the full plan will be in the forums!
  • You can now store buildings and move them to your other islands. To store a building, start moving it and click on the Storage button (looks like a backpack next to the other movement buttons). You can place buildings from storage by accessing your main inventory.
  • Added click-and-hold controls. Hold your mouse down and watch your character move!
  • Free-cam mode has been added back in when you’re on your island. To unlock the camera, click on the camera icon next to the Movement Mode button :-)
  • Upgraded the engine to Unity 5. Expect some weird bugs possibly.

Coming Soon
  • More frequent updates!
  • Crop harvesting.
  • Crop trade missions.
  • Cooking.
  • And once those last Beta2 features are done, we’ll launch Beta2 and start working on Beta3 (the combat/adventuring beta)

Update 0.5.1 is out!

Patch Notes - Beta1: - 5/27/2015
New Stuff
  • The new face style has been applied. Let us know what you think!
  • First phase of the desktop UI is in! You should notice smaller buttons for stuff based on your screen size.
  • You can now reset your character manually in the Options panel. No more waiting for Jason to get around to it in the forums :-)
  • A new vendor has been added to Runner’s Rest! Milly will sell contracts for followers you haven’t yet recruited. Her list is short, but will grow with future patches.
  • An Announcements window has been added to the main menu. This will help us keep you up to date with the latest news.
  • A stubbed out version of the intro is in. Right now it can only be accessed from the main menu. In future patches, there will be some better visuals and voice over for it.

Stuff that will be in a future patch
  • Crop farming/harvesting.
  • Proper crafting items. Right now they’re mostly temp.
  • Cleaner UI for follower tasks.
  • Desktop version of the UI with smaller buttons and tooltips.
  • WASD, click-and-hold, and gamepad controls
  • Berry farming.
  • LOTTTS more story stuff
  • Cutscenes before every act.
  • The Salon (to change your appearance)
  • Elemental damage types and states
  • Player shops

Q: Is this a Facebook game?
A: Nope! We’re using a cartoony art-style, but that’s it for the Facebook similarities. The game is closer compared to old-school SNES rpg's.

Q: Is this pay-to-win? What’s up with the free-to-play thing?
A: That’s two questions, but I’ll let it slide this time. This game has ABSOLUTELY NO pay-to-win elements. We despise those mechanics and we’ll never go there. We were initially calling ourselves free-to-play, but a lot of people got the wrong idea. Now we have a Free Version (coming later) which will include all of the townbuilding/vanity stuff, but will not include Acts 1 - 3 of the RPG side of the game. The full version includes everything.

Q: I remember the Kickstarter for this and you guys didn’t mention it was an RPG. Is it really an RPG?
A: Absolutely! A few things happened after the Kickstarter and we felt adding more RPG and story stuff to the game would make it better.

Q: Is this a mobile game ported to desktop? Because I heard…
A: You heard wrong, my friend :-) We have designed the game to work on any device, including desktops. In the past, the UI was very mobile friendly since that was easier for testing. Now that we’re in beta, we’re splitting the UI and working on one specifically for desktop computers.

Q: Speaking of that, the controls are pretty stiff and limited.
A: That wasn’t a question, but yeah, we had a single control scheme during alpha. Now that things are a bit more solid, we’re going to be adding WASD and gamepad movement support soon.

Q: Hold on, why do I need to register an account on your site?!
A: In the future, it will be optional. Right now we need players using accounts since it helps us with testing. And hey, having an account lets you resume your game on any device, so it’s not all that bad.

Q: So I’ve been playing for a bit and I found some things aren’t fun.
A: Again, not a question… So, if something isn’t fun, we’ll fix it. That’s the point of Early Access :-) Please let us know in our forums so we can discuss it with you and come up with a solution.

Q: When will the game be done?
A: We’re hoping to having version 1.0 ready by August, but we’re a small team and things happen. If there are delays, we’ll be sure to communicate them to you guys in our forums and updates.

Q: What about after that. Any expansion plans?
A: We have about 4 expansions planned out so far, with a new one coming out once a year. Each expansion will add new features, increase the level cap, and add a bunch more story content for Act 4 onwards.

When you've had your fill of adventuring, you can build up an outpost to serve as your base of operations for crafting and sending your followers out on missions while you're away.

Your friends can also set up outposts which you can visit and help out. Oh, and did we mention that your account is fully cross-platform and cloud-enabled, so it can be resumed from Android/iOS devices? Yeah, it's pretty slick.

Early Access

The Adventure Pack gets you access to the game on Steam, Android, and iOS. It also will include all 3 acts of the story part of the game when it launches.

Known Issues in This Phase

  • Bugs. Definitely bugs.
  • No pathing for NPC/Monsters except random wandering.
  • PC controls and GUI are in progress.
  • Lack of some sounds.
  • Combat needs improvement.
  • Minimal variety of weapons/ships/monsters.
  • Ability diversity for normal attacks, no buff/debuff spells.
  • GUI for captain missions.
  • GUI systems for crafting.
  • No Encyclopedia (Button still in-game).
  • No Social (Button still in-game).
  • Requires Steam Bandits account to play (no guest mode yet)

Stratos is a world of floating islands, fragmented and strewn across a seemingly-infinite sea of clouds. Steam Bandits is a mix of classic turn based RPG, and townbuilding, set in a steampunk universe. Did I mention everything is on floating islands? There are many ways to play the game and advance your town and characters. In the town you can craft weapons and armor, send other captains on missions, or go on missions yourself!

As a fan of steampunk games, I suggest giving Steam Bandits a try!

I made an island and filled it with cats and other random small animals.
I wish there was an option to romance your team members. I feel this is the only thing missing from the game.

Early Access-recension
This game is honestly more fun than I was expecting for the development stage that it's at. Considering this is an early access build, there's a lot to do! No bugs I'm running into that make the game unplayable or intolerable; mostly just small cosmetic ones. I picked it up and played around for several hours. Still have quests to do but I figured I'd add in my two cents!

-The art is gorgeous. Environments and assets are really pretty, the pets are super cute (I grabbed so many beacons in the hopes I could have a bunch running around my town but alas, need more berries right now).
-OH MY GOD YOU CAN MOVE THE TREES AND PLANTS. I was so freaking happy when I accidentally scooted a tree out of the way while setting up stuff on the starter island. It's like setting up your town in Animal Crossing and not having to build your path around rocks cause you can just MOVE THEM. I love that SO MUCH.
-That said, town building is pretty fun. I've enjoyed the sorta RPG-with-a-developing-storyline-but-you-can-sit-around-and-make-stuff-at-home thing. Personally I enjoy those types of games so I'm having a good time.
-I like the COG system; it's a little bit like being able to change your classes ala Final Fantasy V since it grants you different abilities that let you battle differently. Being able to remove them is awesome for those who want to find the best set ups for their favorite captains.

(I don't think I have real cons at this point, more like things for the devs to consider moving forward)
-I feel like the battle music could be a bit more hype, but that's just my opinion.
-Certain gatherable items like berries seem to have a front face. If that front face is against a wall or stuck behind bushes, you sorta walk around it in circles and can't have it.
-The battle system feels a little bit on the slow side; even an "easy" map seems to have long battles. A "normal" map was difficult to the point that I KOed more frequently than I felt was right.
-The walk speed is also a bit slow for my taste? But again, that may just be for my taste.
-That said, being able to scroll around on your town and click things rather than walk across it from building to building might be nice. Could be offset if you walked faster though I guess.
-An option to repeat a task after it's been completed would be nice.
-There are some weird animations (the main character walk feels a little clunky), but nothing really distracting.

TLDR I'm looking forward to where this game will end up in the future. It's already really promising and I'm gonna go back and do some quests now.

Very charming game with a lot of potential! Since Steam Bandits: Outpost is still in alpha, it's understandably still a bit rough, but even at its current state there's already plenty to do, and the art is great.

Lots of quests and a budding story line, along with a JRPG feel, creature capturing system, town building and exploration. I'm looking forward to seeing where this game goes!
