Quick Summary: third person hack/slash game similar to Devil May Cry, but with no platforming elements. Gameplay is mostly focused on sword combat and timing your dodge moves. The game’s art style is cel-shaded with mostly modern world environments, kind of looking like you’re in the Sin City world, but with color. A lot of the game seems like interactive anime and it’s kind of hard to understand what the hell is going on in the story, but the game is a lot of fun, and that’s what matters.

You play the character Mondo Zappa, an unassuming looking dude with a cybernetic arm and a big ♥♥♥ katana who works for the government as an “executioner.” The game’s world isn’t fully explained, but apparently there are demons called “wires” all over the globe causing trouble, along with ghosts, vampires, and aliens. Mondo works out of a small office with a few other people but his missions take him all over the world (and to the Moon), accompanied by his spunky sidekick Mika, who’s basically an anime little sister. Ultimately, it seems like most of the world’s evil comes from a bad guy on the dark side of the Moon, and it’s to Mondo deal with it.

The game is broken up into episodes, each one being a self-contained mission with a boss at the end. There are a few collectibles to find, such as life crystals (to increase your max life), blood (to upgrade your secondary weapon ammo limit) and moon crystals (to upgrade combat skills). The other thing to look out for are hidden Scarlett locations, which unlock “challenge levels.” Other than the Scarlett locations, most of what you get drops from defeated enemies, and as you play, your max life and max blood slowly increases a tiny bit at a time. Each mission also awards you cash, which you can use in the game’s store. The missions are almost all linear, and there’s really only one level that you might get lost in (because you’re searching for something). Since Mondo doesn’t jump in the game, there’s no platforming to do and the game is really all about combat.

If you’ve played third person hack / slash games like Devil May Cry or Darksiders, the fighting system in Killer is Dead should be pretty familiar to you. Your sword slashes come out in combos that cause enemies to flinch (unless they’re blocking) so most of the time you’re wiping the floor with the weaker wires. I played with Keyboard + Mouse but a controller might be a better choice. You have a “block” button that doubles as a “dodge” if you happen to be moving when you press it. Both the block and dodge have the potential to open up enemies to brutal counterattacks if you time them properly. However, unlike the Batman Arkham games, there’s much less warning that the enemies are about to strike so you can’t just mash the attack button or you’ll be in the middle of an attack animation when someone behind you whacks you with a mace. I mentioned Mondo’s cyber arm earlier, and the arm contains Mondo’s “guns” which are surprisingly strong. The Devil May Cry and Darksiders guns are infinite ammo peashooters that just give you something to tickle bosses with, but in Killer is Dead, the guns cause significant damage (including instant kill head shots on some weaker enemies).

Another major (but optional) part of the game is the “gigolo missions” where Mondo tries to romance girls between story missions. Some of the most common items that you’ll be buying in the game’s store are gifts for Mondo’s girls, and these gifts can get pretty expensive. In the gigolo missions, you basically need to stare at a woman with your x-ray glasses, trying to get a nice glimpse of their underwear while they aren’t looking. After you’ve gotten a good eyeful, you can give them gifts until you win them over. Completing gigolo missions unlocks guns for you (and lets you see half naked girls) so they’re worth doing. The gifts really drain your bank account though.

Pros:
+Interesting story, despite being hard to follow at times.
+Cool and stylish art design, including some giant bosses.
+After beating the game you can replay missions to your heart’s content and continue to upgrade. This means you can make yourself stronger in order to tackle the harder difficulty modes. Note that no matter how much you upgrade however, Nightmare mode will still kick your ♥♥♥ if you aren’t good at dodge timing.

Cons:
-The game seems to be rather demanding on my computer’s CPU and stutters despite being locked at 30 fps. This fps lock can be modified though.
-The game is obviously a console port, which normally isn’t a problem, but some things such as the menus were clearly not designed with pc users in mind. For example you use the mouse click and the space button to confirm/cancel rather than enter and esc. Additionally, despite unlocking a bunch of “moves” through upgrading, the game doesn’t explain very well how to use these moves.

Overall the game is fun and worth playing if you enjoy psychedelic art style and a weird story. It’s all about the action, so work on timing your blocks/evasions and don’t worry too much about exploring every nook and cranny. Most of the hidden stuff in the game (nurse Scarett) isn’t hidden very well, and you can come back for them when replaying missions.

First of all, the combat in this game is awesome. It has a great artstyle, the game is easy enough to pick up, and its fun over all. I've definitely had my share of fun with this game and on special, its definitely a steal. Only complaint that I do have is that the camera controls can sometimes be clumsy.

Killer is Dead achieves to be a very simple and very complicated game at the same time. The simple part is gameplay. It doesn't even has complicated or different combo moves. All you have to do mash that button and get higher combos and it will go faster and faster. The complicated part is story. Actually it's not that complicated but game doesn't explain the whole story so you gotta do some research to get the full picture. Characters are awesome, level design is OK, side missions... well you have gigolo missions to do so what do you think? Artstyle is very good I really liked it. It fits well with the game. There are some annoying bugs and unbalanced stuff so they're the only bad things about the game for me. Long story short, this is a great hack n slash game in my opinion. A must play!

Interesting enemies and decent variation between them, mixed with an entertaining combat system makes for some good gameplay. Quite good variety of difficulty setting. Although sometimes the game can be a little bit frustrating, mainly due to my own idiocy, haha.

Also you get to kill a scantly clad man who stole the moon.

Killer is Dead is a unique game made by a unique developer. His games have always been strange and this one is just about the same with weird characters, strange story and amazing art style. The story is a bit lost until the final act but its nothing too important. It's all about the game play. If you like DMC and other action titles like that you'll like this one. PLEASE NOTE: The action starts off slow and takes some time to get used to but once you begin upgrading you'll be a regular badass dodging and chopping your way through baddies. The game is not that long unless you do all the extra stuff where it can last you hopefully 10 hours. If you do nothing but story you will probably finish in 5-6 hours but there are loads of unlockables and challenges to keep you going.

What if autism was more than an idea, but a man? Become Mondo Zappa. Become autism. Seduce women with your giant katana. Use your honorable saumari skills to save the world. Rarely does a game have a main character who is this hollow, in such a succulent way, a way that I can only imagine is like walking through a forest fire while on LSD; terrifying but so strange and beautiful that you can not leave it alone as it slowly destroys you and the world around you.

Not sure if it was good back when it was actually released, but this game by today's standards is below subpar. No mouse support in menus, no graphics options to speak of, 30fps and horrible screen tearing even with vsync on. That's just what I noticed in the first 10 seconds. I got about 3 minutes in before being confronted with the worst camera controls I've ever encountered. I got this game in a bundle so it was basically free. Even that was too much to pay for this game.
