Laughing Jackal's Cubxx HD is out Now!

Hi everyone. I’m delighted to be able to tell you that the fantastic, fast paced arcade puzzler Cubixx HD is out now. Priced at $8.99 with an amazing 35% off during the launch period.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/420570

Cubixx HD was one of Laughing Jackal’s 1st non PlayStation mini titles, and we were all very proud of it. Looking back at it now it’s really surprised how well it’s held up beyond the level of simple nostalgia. I’ve really enjoyed my time playing it again, and it really nails that one more go feel.

While I might be a bit biased, it wasn’t just me who thought Cubixx HD was a winner, with Official PlayStation Magazine UK calling it: “One of the most gloriously addictive, knuckle-bitingly frustrating experiences you can have on PSN.” Eurogamer also gave it an 8/10, calling it:
“Murderously addictive.” The Sixthaxis also awarded Cubixx HD with an 8/10, saying it: “Hovers on the cusp of absolute, delightful joy.”

Cubixx HD is a fast paced action puzzle game which sends high scoring, combo chasing game play to the third dimension!

Play through the epic 50 level Arcade mode, test your skills to the limit with 50 Challenges or take on the world in over 150 online leaderboards! If all that isn't enough you can join forces with friends in the 7 player local Co-op or destroy each other in the 7 player Deathmatch.

Apply now to join the Cubixx HD beta

It’s nearly time for another Laughing Jackal beta test, as we’re going to be starting the Cubixx HD closed beta shortly. So, if you’d like to help us out and get a chance to play the game early then please send an email to: beta@ghostlight.uk.com stating your name, date of birth and the technical specifications of your PC.

Applications will close on the 11th December, so please make sure to get them in before then. As with previous closed betas, we will not be picking people on a random or first-come-first-served basis, so please do bear that in mind. What a ‘yes’ decision actually comes down to depends on a number of factors, including how representative we feel the range of PC specs we’ve assembled for the beta is.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Cubixx HD, you can check out the
Cubixx HD website, or see what I had to say about it when we announced the game last week:

“Cubixx HD was Laughing Jackal’s first non-mini and is a particular favourite of mine, with compulsive score chasing in single player and the local multiplayer being incredibly good fun both in co-op and versus. While I might be a bit biased it wasn’t just me who thought so, with Official PlayStation Magazine UK calling it: “One of the most gloriously addictive, knuckle-bitingly frustrating experiences you can have on PSN.” Eurogamer also gave it an 8/10, calling it: “Murderously addictive.” The Sixthaxis also awarded Cubixx HD with an 8/10, saying it: “Hovers on the cusp of absolute, delightful joy.””

All you need to know is that "for cool and unimportant reasons", Redfield City's army of the undead literally explode when shot. Under normal circumstances, this would make clearing the streets of drooling beings rather simple, but this is video gaming we're talking about. Since when is anything straightforward?

With all but one of your team having been wiped out, you arrive at the epicenter of the outbreak inexplicably short of ammunition. What this means, soldier, is that you have three bullets to deal with the undead horde, and have to set off chain reactions to rid the streets of this menace.
Not all zombies are created equal, and some have more explosive energy, while others loose off a few rounds of their firearm in their death throes.

The upshot of a good performance is money, and once you've got enough of the stuff you can set about buying upgrades that, for example, give you more bullets or inflict more damage. Others, meanwhile, grant you more explosive zombies, or increase the radius of their acidic ooze, which generally makes it easier to make a big bloody mess.

All of this adds up to a monstrously addictive quick-fire affair that utterly nails what on-the-go handheld gaming should be about.

I have to admit…. I wasn’t entirely thrilled to feature another apparent mindless zombie game on Steamified. The genre has been done to absolute death – pun semi intended. Then I saw the entire first page of reviews were thumbs down (at least to me) and I thought “Oh, great… Here we go again.” For someone who really tries not to go into any game to be featured on Steamified without too many preconceptions I knew that I was going to be full of them this time around. And yes, I had heard of the game prior to the creation of the site.

The game starts with a comic book style presentation that introduces the game, its story, characters and the setting. It’s actually pretty neat and a very nice touch. It certainly immerses you into the game in a smart manner. The action then gets underway and we discover a game that is easy to learn and pretty difficult to master until you’re very comfortable with how the plethora of different zombie types splatter. The object with each shot is to create the greatest chain reaction. Every zombie that you kill does a different thing upon death. For example, you might have a police zombie that will fire bullet(s) in different directions and for each bullet that hits another zombie will cause that zombie to perform its splatter pattern which may be creating a pool of zombie matter that destroys every other zombie that touches it, etc. In order to advance further into the game you need to kill a certain percentage of zombies on each level.

Thankfully to aide your zombie killing spree there are upgrades. Each level that you successfully complete will give you a reward in the form of cash that you can spend on getting upgrades. You can upgrade your weapons or you can upgrade the different zombies and have their damage increase over total damage, time, distance or even increase their population, Upgrading your weapons allows you to even have more bullets at your disposal. It’s a good upgrade system and one in which you will have to strategically plan for which upgrades will benefit your playstyle the most.

I really enjoyed the time that I spent with OMG Zombies! It’s not the greatest game in the world but it’s certainly one where given it’s level structure you can spend a few minutes just firing away on zombies and have a bit of relaxing fun over a short period. In that respect it’s a pretty solid game. It achieves what it sets out to achieve and on that basis I can recommend it.

This game has no place being on the store for money; it's something you'd find free to play as a flash game in your browser (e.g. newgrounds, miniclip, addicting games, etc.) I'm glad I didn't pay for this game and got it for free!

It's a puzzle game that doesn't have one set solution. That irritates me, as I can't use logic to beat the game with 100% until I've played a bunch, made a lot of money, and upgraded my ability to kill. I disagree with this method. Great game for a much younger audience, I guess.

PS: My recording software couldn't even pick it up as a game and my backup software was reluctant to record it. That raises some red flags for me.
