Overall a pretty decent game. Feels a bit meh at times, though it's certainly playable and enjoyable.

There is a pretty neat mechanic of pushing off the ground. I wish this were possible multiple times in a row, though it's not.

The final level has a somewhat annoying sequence that you have to get entirely right. You will probably game over a lot there. At least the game starts you back there (rather than making you go through other levels).

The storyline is silly but fits the whimsical aesthetic, so that's a good thing. If anything I think the game might be better served with 2D sprite art because that might have made some things clearer visually.

Overall, the game felt like an interesting experience, despite its flaws, and I was able to get through it to the ending, so it gets a positive recommendation from me.

(Disclosure: I acquired this game as part of the Groupees Build a Greenlight Bundle.)

meh...

don't wanna sound rude or anything but gladly I got this on sale or through bundle sites

10€? meh...

this game ain't all that bad but: you guessed right... meh

maybe it's good that you are allowed to "touch" most enemies unless they do something attack-ish .. but the fighting itself is rather .. meh

I almost thought about quitting.. when the grappling axe ceiling stuff came in .. that swinging momentum might make the game somewhat "faster" .. but if they claim this game was like pow chuu fast .. meh.

the stomp can help in many situations but then again stomping all the time for best results? hmm .. meh

at the end of each level I lacked around 1 bottle or enemy why trying to kill all of them already felt "meh"

I never really used this term before but since I don't wanna be all too cricital because it's not a !§%T§ oh my I spent more than no money on this and some time too .. no, it's not that awful but it's

meh

since the average rating is mixed, and probably wouldn't be affected if I hit no..

I'll say .. go.. for a few euroes .. but on the whole: meh - if you don't have all day for games I guess you might as well play many other platformers first :P and then go "meh" ([for] yourself?) on this one maybe...

The game tries, but it fails to take it home.

The mechanics (short-ranged combat, swinging with rope-axes, bouncing and platforming) are certainly nothing new, but I did enjoy the mix, it felt good. The controls are not very precise in some aspects, but they're bearable. Art direction is nothing to write home about either, but it works.

Then, you start noticing little bugs, like hit detection on enemies or hit detection on your rope swings.
Then, you start noticing little balancing issues, like ranged enemies that have a high enough fire rate to keep you at bay with knockback and kill you unless you glitch it, or rows of 8+ scarcely dangerous enemies inserted as padding right after a checkpoint. They also begin almost every difficult section with an extra life, showing they have no faith in either the audience or their platforming balancing.

And then, the final boss. The final boss made me throw the towel.
Remember all those tactics you learned through the game? Learn how the enemies move and take them out with your axes... Carefully swing around to get that one item so you can get back to 4 health... Explore the environment looking for secret areas... Good, now forget it.
The final boss is nothing like that. The final boss is a runner with no checkpoints and riddled with insta-kill traps. A section like this (which closely resembles Bit Trip Runner with its timing nature) requires tight controls, something that this game doesn't have, and it especially shows in this final stage.
First, you have 10-15 seconds of running, which is padding. Then you have three sawblades on the floor, as wide as your longest jump, so you have to time it perfectly, and I mean 1-2 frame perfect. You can boost-jump through 2 of these but not all 3, because otherwise you'll be too slow before the boss catches up to you.
Then you have some precision jumping (with insta-kill blades in-between), some precision swings (with death void below), and then god knows what because I gave up after the rope didn't hook to the ceiling for the Nth time even though it should've.
What makes it worse is that you have 4 lives and no extra ones can be found in the level (as far as I could manage to last). This means you get a 15 second cutscene after loading the level, then you can die 4 times; when you do (and you will), you're forced to wait about 10 seconds (loading + death screen), then another 15 seconds for the boss cutscene.

Had it been for the early 8 stages I would've suggested this. Nothing exceptional, but it would've worked ok.
The last boss changed the experience from an unremarkable decent one to a memorably annoying waste of time.

Yes, I'll remember you, Wooden Sen'SeY. Good job.

There are 8 levels (+ several small time attack independent levels), each is different, conveniently located checkpoints, good modern cute graphics.
Then comes the 9 levels - final. No checkpoints, small mistake (for example, 0.5 second pause, gap, short rope) and end.
With all my playing time, 1/2-2/3 playtime is only for level 9. Already me, it hurts the fingers (booring).

So the game is beautiful, moderately difficult, fun but short. Trolling is a level 9 - for me insurmountable.

+ generic PC gamepads works
- bug - volume of the music must always be set again (each time you turn on the game is loud).

Level 1-8 (graphics, music, sound, level design) 85-90%, playtime 50% (nice but short, no workshop, no new users levels)
Level 9 - 5% for fun, 100% for trolling

It would be great if the authors devote some time to this game. A level editor would have been great!
The game itself still has untapped potential. Neutral evaluation. But, thx for game.

I really feel neutral about this game.

Pros: cute graphics, good music and funny atmosphere. A decent platformer.

Cons: gets a little repetitive, doesn't motivate you to push forward, some parts of the game are really annoying...

Not bad, but not as good as I'd hoped it would be. The main character was cute and the story is basically nothing besides a basic premise established the first level. There is no talking. I liked the japanese setting and the music fit the game. Every level was quite varied in look, and featured some sort of new obstacle. Most of the enemies were the same and were rather repeitive, with only 2 real boss fights. The game is super short being a little over 2 hours. There are collectible barrels and list of how many guys you killed for the level out of a certain number, but neither mattered. Once i realized collecting was worthless, I stopped wasting my time. This is Creavures game have the same problem, don't sprinkle collectibles if they literally don't help your character progress or do anything at all. I liked the slam jumping as a component, and the swinging was fun too. They were mechanics not really used in the game and they worked fine. I don't know why people were complaining about swinging or player control, they must have just been idiots that played a side-scrolling platformer without a gamepad, which is on them, not the game. I do wish they wouldn't have relied on the jump slam for every part and fighting every enemy. They make it the only way to hurt people without getting hurt, because swinging your sword is useless. So that means you spend the entire game jump slamming every enemy, which gets repetitive. Sometimes you throw the axe at birds, but thats it. There are throwing stars, which do no damage, and some bombs, but that's basically it. There was collision detection problems, as I would get hit approaching things or even if I landed over them or jumped before them. It was annoying how the game featured only partial controller support and numpad didn't work, as that would have given even more control. The final boss has this super stupid being chased scene where you have to keep slam jumping and swinging, but its stupid because of the analog stick, which you have to be holding to the right, to then switch and move down when you jump while pressing x, and then move back up. I died so many times because the game didn't register the analog stick down, all which could have been avoided with numpad use as an option. Also some levels are ok, but some parts are super stupid with checkpoints and are spaced wayyyyyyyyyyy too far apart. Also it makes no sense with the lives, how you have to restart, you should just get to restart from the last checkpoint like every other platformer since the year 2000 (this isn't mario anymore). So the final part is super stupid because of lack of checkpoints and analog stick. Also jumping shouldn't always have to be a 3 part movement with x and down and square, it just overcomplicates thing. Gameplay, shortness, and repetition weight this samurai down. 7/10.

I tried giving this game an honest chance, but it wouldn't let me: the controls are plain terrible. :-(

Let's start on the positive side: the visuals and the music is great. Nothing less than AAA-quality there. But you already knew that, as the trailer and pictures already gave that away.

What those trailers don't mention, though, is the sluggish controls you get. Your basic attack barely reaches in front of you, so before you finish the first level you'll be "axe-slamming" into enemies (jump, then down+attack). This is furthered by the notion that most enemies need multiple hits, so directly attacking is stupid even if you time it directly (there is no such thing as stun, so before you button mashed the attack button enough times, you'll more than likely have traded a hit or two).
Then there is the sling attack, which can not only not be aimed but seems to go pretty much everywhere EXCEPT where you want it. Hitting bats with it is more a matter of luck than anything else. And I bet even the most veteran platform player will have died multiple times because grappling to the ceiling required wonky timing.
Sometimes you get bombs or shuriken, but these are a gimmick. They are just as hard to aim and barely do any damage.

Platformers aren't known for their story-telling aspect, but even here it manages to score below-average. There's this dark ship that comes to your village and steals bottles of...what, exactly? No idea. It's your job to get it back. Those bottles (sake, perhaps?) are in the level as coins, but don't provide any bonus. Neither does killing enemies.
And it assumes the suspension of disbelief a bit too fast. Why are most enemies shadow based? Why are you in a submarine for one level? Why are you made out of wood? And most of all: why can't I use the Kratos-like grappling axe to throw it into enemies directly?

The bad part is that this game has quite some potential it throws away (okay, mainly the controls is to blame). The game looks great and the music is fantastic. In that regards, it really should appeal to those who like 2.5D platformers in the vein of Donkey Kong Country or Giana sisters. But those games are great because they have smooth controls, and ramp up the difficulty with harder courses and enemy placement. Here, you're more struggling with the controls than with the level itself.

This game is insane. It's playful and funny and beautiful on one hand, but on the other one it's a hardore platformer that will cause you to lose all your hair and smash your keyboard. So why get it? It has great music and visuals. It's entertaining and funny. It is a challenge to finish it. There's a simple story with which most of us can relate ("They stole our booze!"). If you're a man (or a woman) ready for a frustrating, but rewarding gaming challenge, get it.

Full review: http://www.cublikefoot.com/review/wooden-sensey-game-review/

If I were to use one word to describe this game, it’d be “rage”. I spent a large amount of time replaying and replaying levels due to my constant deaths. The game is difficult, really, but it’s an amazing experience.

The game started with a very simple story. Badguy shows up, badguy steals goods, goodguy must return the goods. It’s primitive, yes, and not really unnecessary, but it lays the foundation for how the hero goes about getting the goods back. The controls are very simple, with new abilities introduced over time, allowing plenty of time to get used to each ability and its corresponding button. I never found myself mixing up the controls. You end up having access to four different attacks, each with its own advantages. Some of the major attacks have other major uses, like jumping higher, or swinging across the level.

There are a variety of enemies scattered throughout the nine levels of the game. I wasn’t sure if each dealt a different amount of damage, but later in the game, it certainly felt like I was taking more damage by the new enemies being introduced, some even killing me in a single hit. The enemies and obstacles both progressed in difficulty over the course of the game and this was a reasonable pace, up until the final level. The final level was excruciating to complete. That level contained the final boss, who I actually defeated on my second try, but the segment leading up to the final boss was just painful. I died many times in an effort to complete that level. It seemed as if they took the difficulty of the rest of the game and squared it.

Wooden Sen’SeY also featured a water level in which the protagonist traversed an underwater cave in a spherical submarine. This added a bit of variety to the gameplay, but I did not find this level as enjoyable as the normal, land-based levels. The level was a bit annoying at times too, especially near the end, when I had to find my way through a maze of wooden crates infested by enemies.

The game’s graphics were simply stunning. When placed on their highest settings, it was just.. amazing. The style chosen for the landscape, characters, and textures blended well with the platforming genre as a whole. The character models reminded me of Double Fine’s “Stacking”, but in a more “cartoon” way. The game’s music was also great, and makes me wonder if there is a soundtrack available?

Wooden Sen’SeY’s primary fault is the length of the game. It took me roughly two hours to beat. That’s nowhere near the amount that I wanted, but it was an enjoyable two hours nonetheless.

Wooden Sen’SeY also has a time attack mode, which consists of 30 small stages that truly test your platforming skills. I still find myself stuck on a single one, because I cannot pass it fast enough, but this mode does add some extra length to the game. It reminded me of Rayman’s time attack modes, on a smaller scale. These stages are surprisingly difficult, and I found myself stuck on certain stages for upwards of ten minutes. I’m still stuck on an early level, but they are fairly entertaining and I recommend playing them after beating the story mode.

Overall, Wooden Sen’SeY was an excellent experience. Fun, challenging gameplay bundled with amazing graphics. I cannot wait to see what Upper Byte Studio brings us next.

Wooden Sen'SeY is a nice little platform/action game that takes place in a crazy Japanese world. Too bad it is so repetitive and sometimes too difficult as well. The keyboard and mouse controls for the game are atrocious, proving incredibly fiddly no matter how you attempt to alter them in the options menu.I did hear that the game works far better with controller though. Wooden Sen'SeY is a fairly average indie platformer : one that you won't regret purchasing, nor will you rave about to your friends. Just keep in mind that if you don't own a controller, you might run into some difficulties.

Wooden Sen'sey is action-platforming game where you play as a Japanese village chief who's sake is stolen by evil, space bandits, and its up to you to get all that wonderful rice-liquor back. The moral of the story is pretty straight-forward, never steal a Japanese-man's sake, but especially if that same man is going to hunt your ♥♥♥ down Kratos-style with his twin, chain-linked axes to boot!

Graphics

For a simple platforming game, I gotta say, I'm impressed. The visual over the top style of the animations mixed with the seren background imagery gives Wooden Sen'sey a real reason to stand out . With a varitey of resolution options and graphic presets the game give you just enough in options to really optimize you game experience, and Even on low settings this game looks pretty good. My littlefavorite touch was simply the reflections on the water. Its subtle touch but nice one that adds a little life to the background.

Audio

All in all the music was pleasant to listen to and didn't feel out of place which I applaud upper byte for, considering that the game is a mix of Japanese tradionism and steampunk. Though the dialogue wasn't much of anything, I found the over the top japanese acent to be rather humorous, much in the same way a funny character in a kaboki theater play would exaggerate his voice. Reminding you that the game is meant to be funny and fun, even though you will probably die. a lot.
