It's a roguelike.
Not the hardest.
Not the easiest.

I have almost a hundred hours and I have 1% of the achievements. That's something.

I have actually had to make myself stop playing this game as every time I start a new character, I get sucked in once again. Best 7$ I have spent in a long time.

Stop reading this review and start buying the game.

Also, anyone who could possibly 100% this game without hacking deserves a hefty reward.

If you're going to take this game because of the achievements, take note that you will need to do the game 9 times in the different levels to get them all. 145 achievements per walkthrough.

Good luck.

Otherwise, it's a good roguelike. Nothing amazing but worth the try.
Tons of classes, unlockables and a huge map to explore, you will need a lot of time to beat it.
You can extend your gameplay by adding mods from the workshop to your game.

It's quite hard to get used with the controls. Also, you have the choice of exploring a map manually with the arrows or automaticly with the "Z" button. Anyway, the automatic explore won't follow the quest you are doing. Some quests will tell you to go somewhere but it won't show on the map, it only tells you some hints like go northwest from the forest.
The progress of the game is also too fast, you will sometimes get to a boss when your level is still too low. Your only way to farm is to go to harder dungeons.
Finally, I hope you like to die because you will die really much in this game. Dark Souls in 2D.

As I said, it's worth the try.

There's so much you can do in this game, it's so enthralling.
All the time I've spent in this game, and I've yet to beat it. And I haven't even spent a lot of time of this game.

If not the best game ever then at the very least it is the best Roguelike I have ever played. And that comes from a person who only subscribed to DCSS for many, many years.

One of the most in-depth roguelikes I've ever played, I couldn't recommend this more highly to any fan of roguelikes and indeed, action RPGs in general.

A very profound and complexe game that has been maintained for years.

If you are interrested in "rogue-likes" games but are affraid of text-based graphics, this can be a very entertaining footstep into this genre.

I've been playing this for hundreds of hours, and have only bought it recently on steam. I keep on playing it from time to time, with no disapointment (except when I die horribly after hours of play, which happens quite often :p)

A pretty good rogue. It's not about graphics but the gameplay obviously. What really works for me personally about the game is that it is effectively one long endurance battle(I've been a long distance runner for many years and it's a similar mentality). It's randomized, progression is inevitable(both in your character, and forced upon you), you can choose a number of ways to fight between the various classes, etc. but again you must always be alert in order to succeed. Or you lose everything.

I enjoy not feeling completely alone in this game.... because it has a chat. Sure, it's most obvious use is for help questions, but it's much more like dark souls in that you see people dying, world events occurring, and what forms is a sense of unity in the community despite everyone being alone on their own journey.

The game is free from the website, but why not buy it for the cheap price anyway?
Fun to play when you need something casual, too.

Tales of Maj'Eyal (ToME4) is a fantastic take on the modern rogue-like. The developer made smart design choices like getting rid of unnessary potions and hunger mechanics . This really helps to streamline the rogue-like genre. Tack on it's intricate class and character progression systems and you've got a unique and fun game that keeps you coming back for more.

Rougelikes have become increasing gameified lately, TOME however, is the real deal. It takes a hardcore rougelike and wraps it in an easy to access package. The depth of gameplay contained within this game is amazing! If you find yourself enjoying the flood of new "rougelike" games that are crowding the steam storefront, then do yourself a favor and try this game.

One of the best roguelikes ever created. Ot successfully blends replayability, unlocks, lore, and a fully featured and challenging campaign together to make a satisfying and murderous whole. If you enjoy roguelikes, you absolutely cannot go wrong with this game.
